Now I get the whole 'Choice speech' Levi makes from time to time. It makes me love him even more, if that's possible.

Great, just as the first volume.

Since I've seen the anime, I knew how it was going to end, but it was still a very enjoyable read. Anime adaptation of Levi's story was a lot different than this manga, and I can say that I actually enjoyed manga better.

Since I still don't wanna get out of this world, I'm probably gonna read 'Before the Fall' spin off next. I'm really hoping to enjoy that as much as I enjoyed this.

My heart is breaking. It's even sadder knowing the vents that will still happen to these characters.

But this side story really showcases and emphasizes the whole philosophy of Levi and his idea about "choices". Also, what's Levi without his obsession for cleaning, and tea leaves? I just love him.

4.5 stars.

“As you’ve realized, the Survey Corps was built upon countless such sacrifices. There are still too many things we don’t know about the outside world. But if it means taking back the world for humanity, I’m sure none of them regret dedicating their hearts to that cause. Not one.”

Gosh, this is so very painful.

While I'll be remiss to think that anything in the world of Attack on Titan is anything resembling cheerfulness and joy, the fact that there were happier times, filled with camaraderie and relative peace does make everything all the more hard-hitting. And Levi's life is no exception to the rule.

Farlan and Isabella were wonderful additions to the cast. Their personalities bringing different sides to Levi's in a delightful manner. I just wish we could have had more of them.

The resolution of this little plot was nothing that surprised me; certainly not considering what we know about the future, but the fact that it felt perfectly in line with everything else makes it perfection in all its dire, cruel, hopeful glory.

More than anything, however, learning how the relationship between Erwin and Levi came to be what it is in the present storyline was all I wanted from this flashback manga. After completing it, I feel as if I have a true insight into what made them what they are. And there's nothing else I could have hoped for.

Sadly not as good as the OVA. I think I just enjoyed the story more in that.

We get a lot of extra padding here. Secrets upon secrets, that really don't feel heartfelt. I guess I just couldn't get attached to the plot they were trying to pull off here. I get it was trying to go for a deeper story but didn't measure up.

Saying that the fights are still entertaining and the deaths are as fucked up as you expect. It was especially sad to see a certain person get killed. You knew it was coming if you read or watched AoT but man oh man, it was screwed up for sure.

Overall a decent spin-off that gives a deeper look in to Levi but not nearly as good as Attack on Titan.

Story
A satisfying conclusion to a pretty interesting story giving back story on Levi and Erwin.

Mr. Snark's story adds some good depth and a little more intrigue the politics of life behind the walls. I'll be curious to see if the subplots introduced here find their way into the main story at some point.

Artwork
Mr. Suruga's artwork is again good, and I didn't notice much difference from the artwork of Mr. Isayama.

Verily, Levi is the bae-est (triple pun), but I could not like this particular story.
It was quite obviously a filler, and mostly pointless in terms of fleshing out Levi's background or his relationship with Erwin.
The plot was dull and hastily wrapped up. The illustrations were a mixed bag. It was instantly visible that this THE Levi, he was slightly different. Then there were the two 'comrades' of his. Honestly, what extras. The girl was drawn in a way that didn't fit the aesthetic of the original manga. She was extremely cartoonish. The other dude was just okay.
I was hoping to get a really cool backstory and first meeting between Levi and Erwin. I did not get what I hoped. There was a small sequence in the third season's first opening theme where the kiddie Levi and Erwin passed each other by. I thought maybe we would get an explanation about that.
There was no emotion in this story. Levi lost, what apparently were two of his earliest friends, but it was predictable from the start and it didn't hit me when it happened.
Eh. Basically, I did not like it.

We learn that the 3 were hired by nicholas lovof to get some document from erwin but now that they are outside they have to fight the titans and there is a good moment with zoe, running from the titans using smoke signals but then rain comes in and when he goes alone, bt then comes back only to have his friends eaten by the titans, the manga does it so much bette rthan the anime and it will leave emotional scars reading it, just too good and the way Levi then confronts Erwin and their conversation after it is so brilliant. Just impactful and heart wrenching and Levi as a character is given so much depth and proper motivation.

These two books are just too precious :")))
For Levi lovers, Erwin lovers, and even more for EruRi shippers that we are. Besides fangirling, the story gives great insight into both of their characters and also how their exceptional relationship was formed. Seriously, why would you deny yourself such beauty?
Also, I highly recommend reading the manga (even if you've watched the anime), since the story is much more complete and well-structured here. The details help the whole process make more sense.
Overall, I enjoyed myself reviewing this manga today :D Reading about these two is always an experience full of different emotions for me. Had a really great time today as well.

I‘ll always maintain that Levi, Erwin and Hange are considerably more interesting than the entire rest of the Survey Corps

Levi Ackerman

The man. The myth. The legend

This was a fun little prequel/backstory into one of my (and many others) favourite characters. Let's face it the Ackerman's are the best, even Kenny.
