Racial rivalries, religious hatreds, and a stolen treasury force Eric Bjornson to risk the lives of his beloved companions as a savage Viking horde of his own kinsmen, led by his best friend, chase him across England to settle a drunken blood-feud. Although kept alive only by lies and trickery, Eric's Christian companions turn against his heathen beliefs and betrayal of innocents, but a powerful Druid Seer forces them to reunite and fight together as the future of three universes are gambled upon the doom of one viking warrior.Tensions never cease as the companions vie for leadership of their company and debate their course through religious turmoils that risk both their lives and their souls. Love triangles abound, spurring jealous rivalries and surprisingly-intimate scenes. The viking era was an age of violence, social upheaval, and religious contention; DeathQuest, Book 1 of The VIKINGS! Trilogy, recreates that forgotten world in fantastic detail.
I did enjoy this book and the story kept me quite engaged. I haven’t read so much so quickly in awhile, but I’m normally not just reading strictly for pleasure. With that being said, the story could use a bit of polishing, but that didn’t distract from my overall enjoyment. The one main detractor that kept popping up was the almost unnecessary references to child rape of the female characters. All 3 main characters had their personalities built around some form of sexual assault or prostitution. One being from a mythical creature which really led me to believe the author couldn’t imagine any other way to develop a female lead character. I understand trying to represent the age, but it seemed a bit much. In saying that, it wasn’t graphic, just present. For a more lighthearted read I just thought there could have been better ways to character develop. I do find the story intriguing enough to finish the series, and as a follower of the old ways, I do enjoy that the author has done research into the subject material.
I was at Pacific Lutheran University attending the Norwegian Heritage Festival when I came upon the author Jay Palmer selling his books. He had about 10 books and I asked him to explain each one to me. What struck me most and ultimately persuaded me to purchase DeathQuest was how passionate he was about each of his books. After reading the book, I can understand why. The protagonists take the reader along on a series of adventures where the characters and reader alike must come to grips with what their version of right and wrong is. I really enjoyed how as the story progressed, each character revealed more layers and the others' opinions of them changed accordingly.
Picked up this book at the author's table at a board game swap meet. Saw him again many months later at Comicon and decided it's about time I read it. I have to say I enjoyed it. I liked the characters, the story didn't feel forced, and I felt tension and was anxious to learn what would happen next. Some commented that it needed some polish but I thought it read very well. I'll pick up the next in the series at the next board game swap meet.
Jay Palmer manages to include everything you want in this book. It has action, adventure, mythology, love, revenge, you name it. The attention to detail and accuracy of the Norse mythology is unmatched in mainstream fiction. His characters all have back stories, and are very well written. if you are interested in the least in Norse mythology, or are just a fan of Fantasy, this is a Must Read!!!!
I meet the author at horror con and he spotted me from a distance. The book is fantastic very good quality writing. Good fun a little dread, a little magic, some lust, and some misery in there. A nice balance the characters are easy to understand and follow. The logic is good. Great adventure I will be continuing with the series.
