Between the Sheets

Rate this book
Erotic romance writer Jenna Brooks lives an ordinary life in a quiet Oregon town, putting her sensual heart into her fiction rather than her everyday life. Deeply involved in her latest story about glamorous lovers on the run, she laughs off a carnival gypsy’s prediction that she’ll find everything she desires “between the sheets”—apparently those her DeskJet is printing. Because suddenly, Jenna finds herself drawn into her own stories, literally. When the seductive, mysterious Riley Stone rescues her from an attempted hit and run, she’s plunged into a reckless, wild relationship unlike anything she’s ever experienced—except on paper.

Meanwhile, Riley is feeling pretty upended himself. A specialist consultant with the FBI, he’s on a mission to derail a drug king-pin whose wealth and extensive real estate is managed by Jenna’s neighbor, he’d planned to ingratiate himself with Jenna just enough to gain access to her neighbor’s apartment so he can keep a close eye on his comings and goings. Instead, he finds himself not only drawn to Jenna, but falling for her, hard. On the heels of this realization comes the discovery that her new neighbor didn’t move in next door by chance: her father is the last hold-out against a drug-money fueled billion dollar development scheme and her neighbor plans to take and hold Jenna hostage until the necessary papers are signed.

As Riley struggles to keep Jenna safe, the romance they’ve woven could force them to pay the ultimate price: admitting they’ve fallen in love—for real.

So we have Jenna – she’s an ordinary kind of girl who’s nursing a broken heart from a broken engagement, but she also has a big secret…she has been writing erotic romance novels under a pen name, and no one other than her publisher knows who she is. When she finds herself involved with a man passing through town, she begins to think she might be one of the characters in one of her novels – and what a change it is from her ordinary life!
“Romance was a lot safer, a lot surer, when she wrote it than when she lived it.”

And then we have Riley, who happens to save Jenna one night from being run over by a car and slowly works his way into her life. He’s also hiding a big secret…he’s actually a special consultant with the FBI and is working to bring down a criminal ring he has been tracking for years. His only goal is to bring down these criminals, he has no time for a relationship. Of course the attraction he feels towards Jenna is too much for him to ignore, but he knows that he has to continue keeping the truth about who he is from her to keep her safe – and you know how that is going to turn out!

When things heat up between Riley and Jenna and it becomes clear that Jenna is at risk, Riley will do anything he has to in order to protect her. Unfortunately, when Jenna finds out that Riley has been lying to her about who he is – and that he even knows about her alternate identity and has read her books and maybe has used a line or two on her – it’s going to take a lot more than words from a romance novel to help Riley win Jenna back.

Throw in some nasty criminals, some colorful partners working the case with Riley, a fortune teller at the carnival, and some steamy times at the beach, and you have an action packed read wrapped up in a love story.

I enjoyed this story and felt like it had a lot of potential, but at times it seemed like the transition between scenes was a bit abrupt and it would throw the rhythm of the book off. I loved that Jenna’s character became stronger as the story progressed and I liked the fact that she would often draw from her writing persona as she analyzed situations. Riley was quite a conflict for me – he had such a sense of duty, but when he makes the decision to further his relationship with Jenna I found myself getting so angry with him for not being more truthful with her, especially when that lands her in danger.

Overall this was a good read with a lot of potential, but I just wanted a little more out of this book.

I was given an eARC of this book from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

(This is a short story/novella. This review is not based on story length but story content as length has very little to do with how much I enjoy a book.)

Riley is a consultant for the FBI and needs an in to get close to a man who manages properties for a drug kingpin. Jenna, an erotic author, is his in as she's neighbors with said man. The operation is simple: get close, get the info, and get out.

I liked that Riley did what was necessary for the sake of the operation. His integration into Jenna's life was seamless and thorough. His protective instincts for the green-eyed beauty seem to come from someplace deeper than lust or a need to ensure Jenna's safety. Perhaps it's a combination of the intel he gathered beforehand, his admiration for her work, and his initial meeting with her. Whatever it is, it comes through loud, strong, and undeniable.

Jenna... I couldn't connect with her. On the surface, she was pleasant, smart, and loyal. Under all that though, I wasn't too impressed with her. She seemed to let things happen to her, saying "okay" to things even when she didn't want to. There's an underlying current of strength in her that I wanted to just show, you know? There were times it was right there, just beyond her words, her actions, a contradiction to whatever she was doing or saying at the moment. But she never let it out. It showed up in a big way at the end though and I loved that it finally made an appearance.

The chemistry between Riley and Jenna was lackluster for me. Something...was missing. I wish there'd been more between them, more touches, kisses, embraces, tension.

I can't say I didn't enjoy this story because I did. But for the all excitement the synopsis created, I would've loved for this story to blow me out of the water.

I’ll keep this short and sweet. I thought this was a pretty decent book. Not the most thrilling romantic suspense book I’ve ever read, and I admit to having some “oh, I want to smack Jenna” moments because she was a bit ditzy, but in the end, things worked out all right.

I liked Riley as the FBI consultant and how he was so torn between duty and lust. That happens often in books, but Ms. Davis & Ms. Marr didn’t let that feel contrived or clichéd.

Jenna – wahoo! Erotic romance writer has adventures! I like when authors write about authors because (usually) it gives the author characters a better feeling of realism.

I’m giving this book 3.5 stars and hope you guys check it out. I know I’ll keep my eyes open for more books by this great duo.

I hate short stories cause writers try to weave a great story that lacks grit and without that it leaves the reader like their missing something, so when I read this one I thought here goes a couple of hours of my life. HOT DIGGIDy DANG! I was so WRONG! This short story is definitely a reader. Riley is hot and owns his own security company but the man needs to think up his own romantic lines instead of spewing them to the lady that wrote them in her romance novel(Dahl!) Jenna a romance writer and daughter of board member of a wildlife conservancy in Oregon that is a very wanted commoity by mafia drug dealers Evan and Tanner whom will do anything to get that land. What your wondering will they do? And will Riley come up with his own romantic lines? Too short of a story to give away any tidbits. Buy the book you'll love it. Thanks for the book.

This is fast paced romance, suspense and action all chocked into one. I enjoyed the characters. Jenna a erotic romance author, whose story she is writing becomes her true life. Riley the FBI agent, new neighbor trying to solve a drug ring going on in her building. A hot romance develops between Jenna and Riley. Riley finds himself in a situation that he needs to keep Jenna safe. I received this book from the publisher for an honest review.

Review:

I like the premise of this story, of an erotic romance author who is thrust into an FBI investigation and ends up falling for the agent assigned to the case.

It is the first time I have read either of these authors and I enjoyed reading their suspenseful romance. The story was fast paced and kept me rooting for the hero and heroine. The story has lots of action and suspense, but the romance is more sweet heat than I would have thought with the story being about an erotic romance author. I think Jenna and Riley are great characters, but their love story seemed rushed and forced at points.

I was entertained by the story and would be interested to see what other stories these Authors come up with.

I got an ARC of this book courtesy of Entangled Publishing in exchange of an honest review.

Between the Sheets made for an fast and interesting read. The story was a bit different from your usual romances and I liked it.

Jenna Brooks lives a quite life in Oregon, moonlighting as an erotic romance writer. After a relationship gone bad an year ago, Jenna prefers the romance and excitement of the fiction rather than her everyday life. Currently writing about two lovers on the chase, Jenna never expects anything like that in her real life. But when a car almost runs her over and a hot and sexy guy rescues her, like it was in one of her books, her life changes for ever.

Riley Stone is a consultant with the FBI, trying to nab a major drug kingpin. His target has just bought a house right next to Jenna. His only play is to get close to Jenna, so that he has a chance to catch the criminal. What he never expects is to actually be attracted to Jenna and maybe even fall for her.

As the book progresses we see that Jenna is also in danger from the mob. It's up to Riley to save her. But what will happen when he gets caught in his own web of lies. He is willing to go to any lengths to save Jenna, even if it means telling her the truth and taking the risk of staying away from her.

I am not a big fan of insta-love, and Between the Sheets was pretty much it. I wish the characters were sometime to gradually develop their feelings. I understand their attraction to each other, but I could not get on board with falling in live within days of knowing each other.

Between the Sheets was a good book. And I loved the concept of her books being almost brought alive. It added that hint of magic, I think, along with the gypsy woman Jenna visits, who tells her to look between the sheets. It was fun and exciting to read. It is action packed and fast paced, though a short read. I wish the book was lengthier, so that I could enjoy the roller-coaster ride this book was.

What would you do if you were rescued from certain death by a handsome stranger? Jenna is swept off her feet, literally, and she doesn't want to deny her feelings. Even though she's still hurt from a past love relationship, Jenna wants what she's so good at writing in her novels. True love. Riley seems to be just the kind of man she could fall for. Handsome, charming, and with a penchant for romantic words. All is going well until little things seem a little off, her neighbour starts pestering her and there are two thugs who follow her around non-stop. All hell breaks loose when her hero in disguise and a sinister conspiracy catch Jenna in the middle of a criminal operation.
I was very attracted to the idea of a writer of romance novels who finds herself a hero worthy of her stories. To me, the romance falls a little tepid but cute anyway. What I really enjoyed was two things. First, we are given morsels of the novel Jenna is writing which serves as a stark contrast between fantasy and real life. That's a good point. Throughout the story, we see how things work in traditional book romances, but how different life is and how our perceptions change when we need things for real. Also, Jenna craves for a hero that makes her swoon but when she's in danger and realises he may not come, she rises to the occasion and turns into her own hero. A heroine in her own story. I liked that a lot. On the other hand, Riley is a man with a mission. He doesn't want to deceive Jenna, but he has to pretend to a certain extent in order to bring the bad, really bad guys to justice. I liked how he acts like a hero but is also a good man who fights to do right by Jenna. A good amount of the novel is almost an action thriller which really pumps up the rhythm. So, Between the Sheets is a cute romance that gets really entertaining when the thriller plot kicks in.

Jenna Brooks is an erotic romance writer living an ordinary life in a quiet Oregon town, when she suddenly finds herself drawn into her own stories, literally. She’s rescued from an attempted hit and run by the seductive and mysterious Riley Stone and she plunges into a wild reckless relationship unlike anything she’s ever known. Specialist FBI consultant, Riley is on a mission to derail a drug king-pin whose wealth and extensive real estate is managed by Jenna’s neighbor. He planned to integrate himself with Jenna just enough to get access to her apartment to keep an eye on the neighbor’s comings and goings, but finds himself falling hard for Jenna. He soon realizes that there is more at stake than he thought, the new neighbor didn’t move there by chance, Jenna’s about to become a pawn in a move against her father.

This fast paced plot keeps the reader on their toes with suspense, action and romance. The author captures the reader’s imagination with well written words and vivid details and compelling characters that are easily related to. The tension builds as things become more dangerous for Jenna and the good guys try to determine just what the bad guys are up to before it’s too late.

The attraction between Jenna and Riley sizzles with passion from the moment they meet the sexual tension continues to build through the interruptions the couple have to endure causing the reader to shiver in delight. Jenna is a charming young woman that the reader can certainly empathize with when things start to get confusing for her, but I found Riley to be a little disappointing for me as a hero, maybe just a little too clichéd. Don’t get me wrong he’s certainly likable and makes a good white knight so I still found the story to be an enjoyable and entertaining quick read.

I just couldn't buy into...well, much of anything in this one. The synopsis was good, the cover was great, and I wanted to love it, I really did. However, it ended up being a struggle to make it to the end of this relatively short book.

The romance wasn't believable--it seemed to go beyond insta-love into a whole other dimension. I just didn't feel it at all. Both Riley and Jenna went on and on about how they felt so instantly connected to each other, and they were so surprised by the depth of their emotions, etc...but that was really it. They told us, but it wasn't there for readers to actually see.

The suspense portion of the novel made it a bit more palatable about 2/3 of the way through, but even that was hard to take seriously. You could practically see the villains twirling their mustaches and cackling like true cartoon bad guys as you read.

Overall this one was a disappointment. I was really hoping for more than ended up being there.

Woo this one fit right in with my favorite thing to do read romance so when I read this had a romance writer in it had to read it. First time in reading this author but also know this one has a co-author also. Jenna is secretly writing the romance erotic at that but finds almost getting hit by a car can lead to so much more. Her would be rescuer is quite yummy himself someone who could of stepped out of one of her novels. Riley is there at right time but then again working with FBI he is there to see what the neighbor of hers is up to. To do this he must hook up with Jenna but the hook I would say is exactly what he gets in the heart. There is actually more to this case than what he is led to believe and soon discovers they actually want Jenna thanks to her father and his scruples in holding out on a deal which upsets the bad guys. Run with them in adventure mixed with heat and romance as they try and stay ahead of the bad guys. But the piece of resistance is what the fortune teller tells her when she steps into her tent. Quite ingenious actually the way it is and how it comes out to the true meaning of the phrase and fortune she is told. Adorable characters that give the journey of their adventure color needed to keep a reader interested. Love who the winner is in all of this after the toe curling last part when it all comes to a head. Would certainly read more from this author. Received a arc for a honest review.

The Summary: Jenna Brooks writes grants for her parents' research by day and erotic romances under the name Jade Johnson. Her life is nothing like the hot stories she writes--until someone tries to run her over. Luckily she's saved by Riley Stone. Riley is working as a consultant with the FBI investigating Jenna's new neighbor. He gets himself invited back to her apartment to plant a wire so he can hear what the neighbor's corrupt associates are planning. This was supposed to be the end of his association with Jenna, but when the wire reveals his target, Evan, has an inordinate interest in Jenna, Riley must continue seeing the sexy writer, keeping her safe while he figures out what she has to do with Evan and his boss' plans. The more time they spend together, the more attached they become to one another. But once Riley's real reasons for getting close to her are revealed, can Jenna trust that their relationship means more to Riley than just a cover and a means to solve a case?

Often times, I catch myself being in my head with either crazy design projects or answering the whys to the most absurd questions. My reasoning for this is probably the relatability factor I had with the heroine, Jenna Brook. Jenna is a romance writer that lives quite a seclusive life, were the most interesting thing that happens in her day are the fantastic love stories she churns out. All until she is saved by Riley, the mysterious stranger that saves her from being hit by a car. Call this a case of life imitating art but Jenna is plunged fairly quickly into a hot steamy relationship with her mystery man but like all great stories things always happen for a reason. When suspicious activities surrounding Jenna’s neighbour become more apparent she is left with no option to believe the events in her life are not by some cosmic occurrence. Although, Riley’s involvement is suspect he does find himself falling for the lovely Jenna. Hell he may have quoted a few lines from her books just to win her back. -

This was a nice, quick read. There was a lot of action, some steamy seduction and lots of sparks between the main characters, Riley and Jenna. They meet because of an investigation of Riley's. One thing leads to another and they are spending time together and feelings things that neither of them think they should. Riley's investigation leads him down a path that he had hoped he would and wouldn't have to travel, especially since he can't get Jenna out of his head. However, the same goes for Jenna, she can't stop thinking about Riley and wondering when she'll see him again. Things definitely heat up between Riley and Jenna, and then everything seems to happen at once. Now the question is will Riley and Jenna make it past what was between the sheets? Or is it all too late? Genie did a great job with this, I didn't put it down once I started. Loved Riley and Jenna together, they were passionate and sweet, good for each other I think.

This is a prime example why one should never judge a book by its cover. The cover is amazing even drool worthy but unfortunately the story just didn’t capture my attention and there are a number of reasons for this I believe.

Firstly Jenna Brooks is such a passive woman I couldn’t like her. She allows so many things to “just happen” to her with out taking part and for me this is something that I just don’t like in a romance heroine. I want my “ladies” to be strong, have minds of their own and someone that I can connect to or be at the other end of the spectrum and be more docile but have a truly horrible past that makes them hide in the shadows or blend in. And for me Jenna was none of the above. She was just “meh.” When she finally started playing an active role it was too late in the story for me to get behind her or in truth care whether she even got her Happily Ever After which is not a good thing in a romance novel.

3 Solid Stars!

The book was OK to me. It had a good story line but I felt it lacked in some area's. The romance between Jenna and Riley was lacking. They were obviously attracted to each other but she keep comparing him to the guys in the romance novels she writes. That was cute at the beginning but after awhile it got aggravating. They were moving things way to fast.

Jenna was a very trusting naive girl. I found that in some parts of the book I just wanted to punch her and tell her how big of an idiot she was being. Other times I actually did like her. I liked her most at the end of the book. She was actually willing to fight and I like that she didn't just set on her butt and do nothing.

Riley, was an enjoyable character. I didn't love him, but I also didn't hate him. I liked that he wanted to save Jenna. I also thought that Jenna could cut him some slack about him lying to her. He did save her life.

REVIEW:
This was a fun mystery with enough action to keep you wondering how things would resolve. There was also a nice warm romance between Jenna and Riley. Although I enjoyed the storyline, some of the scenes didn’t seem to flow into the next and was a bit choppy. Also at times it made me think that Jenna and Riley each had their own author when a scene wasn’t about “them” but rather just one with only snippets of the other’s reaction but never really being pulled into the scene. It was a nice quick read where I just had to know how it ended.

Jenna Brooks has become a target. She has no idea why this is happening. After all she is just an author of erotic romances. Her love life is non-existent ever since Ray, her fiancée left her. Her luck changes when she meets Riley Stone. He acts like he cares for her, but why does he ask so many questions? Their attraction is always hot and heavy. These two are made for each other. Their passion is intense but Riley has a secret. He is investigating Vincent Tanner, a crime boss, that he has pursued for years. He uses her so that he could get near Vincent. What will happen when Jenna learns that he lied? Will she become a victim in this dangerous game? This story grabs you from page one. Jenna and Riley are a perfect pair. They are brave and fearless and their romance is very sensual. The plot moves quickly and the story is filled with danger and the unexpected. Between the Sheets is a great romantic suspense. I loved it!

Normally I don't actively pick up novellas unless they are part of a series I'm reading or people I know can't stop talking about one they read. Most times it feels that they are trying to fit a full lenght book into a short story, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I give this book 3.5 stars and just because I rated it around the middle doesn't mean that I didn't like this story, it just means that it wasn't my cup of tea but it might be for someone else.

I had a hard time relating to Jenna and I just wanted to shake her for some of the choices she made. So basically there were some parts I liked and parts I didn't like. But you might feel differently than me so give it a try.

Between the Sheets was an okay read. I felt like it was short and lacking when it came to character development. Jenna and Riley were likable and there was obvious chemistry but I would have liked more interaction between the two to show how the relationship progressed. I felt like their relationship went from meeting to being in love in .2 seconds. I think I would have enjoyed it more if you would have gotten to know them as a couple more. I did enjoy the action in the book though. It is unlike many of the romance novels out there so I appreciated that. The plot had a good basis and the drama that it entailed kept me reading. I think if the book was a little bit longer it would have been much better.

Jenna is just living her life in her apartment when a new stranger moves in. Little does she know he is the bad guy! Jenna also has a chance meeting with a super hot guy who seems to like her, but acts very strange. It seems like he keeps reciting her own written work from her erotica books, but nobody would know her secret alter ego to be able to do that.

Riley is undercover FBI and makes it his duty to check up on his subjects. He doesn't know Jenna but as she is living across the hall from his target he makes a chance meeting happen. Little could he know he would be falling for the girl he just met to keep an eye on her neighbor across the hall.

Riley and Jenna fall in love but as Riley tries to keep Jenna safe will he ultimately lose her?

I should have rounded up to four stars. I enjoyed the characters and the idea of reading a book where the main character writes erotica. I think I would have like to have had a bit more of that in the storyline. The character of Riley hit his occupation and agenda from Jenna (which under the circumstances makes sense). The storyline was average and it was well written. I just would have liked to see just a little more something mixed in. I would like to see what else these two have written and make a comparison to what I feel lacked something so minor it should not make a difference. Overall both characters were interesting and likeable and the storyline was fine.

This was my first Genie Davis book and I don't usually enjoy short (~135 pages) novella's, but I liked this one, its a typical woman with secrets meets guy with secrets, which cause a big explosion.

Riley is a special consultant with the FBI trying to bring down a criminal ring, which should be his sole purpose, but of course he meets Jenna and soon discovers that she needs his protection, so he keeps his secret...big mistake of course especially when Jenna finds out.

There are some colorful characters, some really steamy scenes, some frustrating moments, but I ended up enjoying the book.

I gave this book 4 stars because it was so packed with story action and romance, and Genie Davis and Linda Marr managed to maintain a balance even in the difficult novella format. The premise of a romance about a romance writer was intriguing and fun. The Authors managed to add a hint of magic which I very much enjoyed. The characters came to life quite easily in a detailed setting and a well plotted story. It was a quick, easy, fast paced read with action and romance at every turn. I found myself slowing down my reading towards the final section as I didn't want the roller coaster ride to stop.

Jenna is a writer of romance. Riley is undercover investigating a man named Evan living in Jenna's building. Riley meets Jenna by saving her which I liked but then it all got weird. Riley tries to woo Jenna by using lines from her books on her, no, that's just creepy. Jenna's life is threatened because her father owns land that someone wants to build condos on, I don't think threatening an adult daughters life is the way to show you mean business. The ending seemed very rushed. I don't think there was enough build up in the relationship. I was given a copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.

Between The Sheets is a well written romance/suspense novel. The characters were well developed, but the plot was very predictable and average.

The Hero was working with the FBI to save the heroine and her family from drug lords. The heroine was a quiet, self contained romance writer. During the Hero's investigation he and the heroine fall quickly in love resulting in a HEA.

I knew exactly what was going to happen next and how the characters were going to react because I have read this plot in so many other romance novels over the years. It could have been a much better read if the author had been more original.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the overall story of this book as well as the main characters. It was a very quick good read. While I understand that it is a novella, I just wished there was a little more backstory of the characters.

I did like the instant connection that Riley and Jenna had and their sweet moments. And I liked the manner in which Jenna stayed in Riley's thoughts or things he would say to her that were her words. They just connected on an emotional level and felt so drawn together. Sweet story!

***ARC from NetGalley in Exchange for an honest review***

Unexpected. A romance writer being wooed by her own words. Creepy? Romantic? Jenna couldn’t decide but she is oh so attracted to her mysterious knight in shining armor! But the shenanigans with her next door neighbor is ratcheting up the creepy factor. Turns out her knight is involved, somehow, and Jenna and her family are in danger. Fast paced, with action and mystery thrown in.. Did not get too vested with either Jenna or Riley though because I couldn’t know them. Good book for a snowy winters day.

There were some things about this book that I really liked & some things that I really didn't like. I thought that the storyline was interesting & it held my attention, however I thought that some of the interactions between Jenna and Riley were lacking. Their romance seemed to progress at lightning speed & I HATED her constant comparison to the novel she had written/was in the process of writing. And the fact that he kept using lines from her books? Cheesy. Fortunately, the storyline somewhat saved it for me. I don't think I would buy it tho..

This is the first book that I have read by either Genie Davis or Linda Marr. It contained a very good mixture of romance, and action and suspense that kept me turning the page wanting to know what would happen next. I just wish that it was longer so that there was more storyline and it did not feel so rushed, but if you like a short story that gets right to the point, you will enjoy reading Between the Sheets. I look forward to seeing what else is available from both of these authors.
