It's just not what I expected. Too much detail and background stories and not enough true tools to help train the mind. Still a positive book, but there are others out there that help me more.

Welcome back to another episode of, "Finally reading my old bookshelf books!"

Mmkay, so I bought this one for 10 smackarooskis in the basement of an Urban Outfitters in college back in like.. 2014. And I think this just goes to show, tastes can change a lot in ten years. As this book collected dust on my shelf amidst move after move across neighborhood, city, & state lines, somehow I kept it on the top shelf thinking, "I can't wait to read this! It's gonna change my thinking, change my life..." and somehow I just never picked it up in those ten years. Maybe I was prolonging my own inner peace?

Nevertheless, I can officially say with confidence: I am no longer the target audience for a book like this. Too much flourished, self-actualizing language. Too much talk of spiritual awareness with very little awareness of how to encourage people to access said awareness. Too much abstraction, too many anecdotes, and not enough cohesion. It felt like spiritually intellectualized brainrot. Is that even a thing? Does this review sound like exactly what I'm talking about? What I'm actively trying to avoid? LOL. I've just retired from the quippy, transcendental self-help lit. It's too exhausting for me to stomach. Forgive my cynicism, but something about these pages made everything blend together like I'd overcooked my macaroni & cheese and by the time I add the milk and the butter and give it all a stir, it's just one big pot of slop (albeit, maybe still mildly appetizing).

My 2014 self was so down to pick up a book like this, finally finish reading 125 pages 2 years later or some shit, and then not shut up to everyone I encounter, "oh my god this book completely changed my brain chemistry WOWOWOWOW." And I think at age 31, I consider myself to be ever so slightly less.. malleable? And hey, I still love the mind expansion of it all! The meditation exercises! The fodder for great wine buzzed conversations with best friends: "hey, what do you think is our purpose on earth?" But for me now, it takes the right book, the right language, the right intentions and approach, to get me there and get me excited.

Sorry dude, 2/5 stars. But a valiant attempt.
