Who would leave a massive inheritance to someone they've never met?
K-9 Officer Kelly Blithe hasn't seen or heard from her bothers in years. Things get complicated when she discovers her brother Scott has been murdered and her other brother Chris is named as the chief suspect. Kelly is forced to trust a man she barely knows to solve the case.
Detective Harry Miller’s life was changed forever when a suspect attack left him scarred. After another murder case lands on his desk, he’ll have to convince Kelly that her living brother really did commit this murder. Neither wants the attraction that quickly overrides their growing friendship. When they discover a massive inheritance is involved, they’ll have to finish the work of a dead man to find out who killed Scott.
I enjoyed the last story, and had hoped to enjoy this one. And in part, I did. But it also felt a little...unfinished or maybe just not as polished as I could have been? The characters were okay, but flat, and the plot didn't make much sense and was a bit convoluted. The characters also kept saying things, then immediately saying or doing the opposite, which is strange to witness, especially from people who are supposed to be professional adults.
The story was okay, but not my favorite. It does still remind me of Sherri Kukla's Dry Brook series though, this one a bit more like the second book in that series, so if you did want a suggestion and enjoyed this one, I do highly recommend checking out Kukla's series too.
Kelly and Harry were fine characters, their personalities and such were okay and fitting for their story, but as for complexity and characters that read as realistic and 'come to life' I didn't really get that here. Still, as a quick read and a fun romantic suspense read this one would probably be an entertaining weekend read. I'm just a bit pickier about my stories, and know this one could be a delightful read, but just felt like it wasn't quite finished when it was published, and I hate that, since the story had a lot of potential and if it wasn't so confusing and hard to follow it could easily stand next to some of the other popular christian romantic suspense books. As it is, it could still likely stand next to LIS books and other shorter hallmark type stories, but maybe not the bigger romantic suspense titles quite yet.
As with the previous book, I did find this one a bit rushed and that is doubly frustrating here, since this one is much longer (not quite three times as long) and yet felt much the same. I actually think I preferred Kyle and Megan's story after having read them both. The might be in part personal preferences, but having more pages and nearly the same amount of story is a big factor, since the extra pages didn't seem to really add anything overall, or what was added was mostly 'fluff' type unnecessary scenes intended to lengthen a book, but that don't really add value to the overall story or content. I had hoped it would help, and a longer story would improve on what was good about Fatal Perception, and give more depth and growth to the characters, but sadly I didn't find that here. I am aware that this was one of Hemlock's earlier books, and that she has written several since these, so I'd be interesting in possibly reading one of her newer books at some point though. I just didn't connect with this series the way I had hoped I might.
