Villains #11

Kill the Beast

Rate this book
The eleventh book in the New York Times best-selling Villains series follows the downfall of Disney’s slickest, quickest, and smarmiest Gaston.

You may think this tale as old as time has been told before. You may know about the beauty, and the beast, and the curse they broke together. But some stories have more than one ending. Some stories have more than one villain.

Such is the story of Gaston. Growing up, young Gaston lived in the shadow of his friend, the prince. He agreed with the prince’s ideas, went along with the prince's schemes, and hid his own talents so that his best friend could shine.

But the prince paid a price for his wicked ways. As he grew more beastly and the world began to forget him, Gaston was no longer forced to pretend. He was determined, never again, to be second-best to anyone. No one says no to Gaston.

The mysterious Odd Sisters know an opportunity to meddle when they see it. And once they do, it just might lead to the downfall of everyone’s favorite guy.

New York Times best-selling author Serena Valentino brings readers back to the tale of that beauty, her beast, and the man who was truly forgotten all along.

Ok, this one was a mess. In general, I wasn't a fan of Gaston in the movie so I wasn't all that excited about him getting his book, but given that he was supposedly best friends with the prince (nicknamed Kingsley) before he became the Beast I thought this could have some potential. Instead, we got a completely different character that is nothing like the Gaston we know. This Gaston loves books, cares about others, and he & the prince are totally gay for each other. When the prince falls in love with with Circe (a character from previous books) Gaston is a little hurt that the prince will no longer have time for him. Enter the Odd Sisters, and the story becomes a huge mess.

This book is written in two ways. First the majority of the book we get Gaston's story told from his perspective. And then, oddly, around 70% in, the story changes and we're being told everything through the Odd Sisters and Book of Fairytales. Out of nowhere Gaston is cursed and becomes the Gaston that we know from the movie (a complete 180 from the character he was in the first half of the book) and we get to see all of his scenes from the movie. Then the story just ends with Gaston's death and we are set up with some cliffhanger that involves a rather bland character that has been strung along in several of the stories by now. This book was a mess for me and easily ranks as one of the worst in the series (probably right after Ursula's story).

I hope she keeps doing these books! I’ve read all of them and I haven’t been disappointed with a single one! Personally the one all about cruella is my favorite!

I really miss the stand alone villain stories. My favorites in the series are Evil Thing and Never Never- books with very little Odd Sister involvement. The Odd Sisters were fun in the beginning, but now the stories are harder to keep straight as timelines are jumping around and characters are being changed to fit the Odd Sisters’ story.

I was disappointed in Fire & Fate, but I was hoping this book would maybe turn things around and focus on just the villain’s story like some of the previous books did.

Additionally, this book is lacking in the writing style I’ve gotten used to and there are so many typos, some of which mess up the entire sentence structure. I’d love to sit down and edit this book in a word document. Sigh. This was a struggle.

Sadly, I think I’m done with this series.

I think they've officially run out of ideas for this series. I skimmed a lot of the book, but it was a very weak plot. It's time to wrap this series up and let it go.

He said, he had no room in his heart for anyone but him.

_ I so wish you would choose happiness.
_ We cannot choose our fates.

عشق و به فکر بودنِ زیادی، برای طرفین عاقبت خوبی نداره. }

* I would recommend reading the previous books first, as there are some throwbacks.

Wit a tale as old as time, you would expect people to be more interested in Gastons backstory, but somehow it was never truly explored. But in this book, we learn more about Gastons childhood, how he lived with his father on the castle grounds and the prince, his future adversary, was his best friend, his blood brother. Gaston and Kingsly go on a lot of adventures, being a menace to a lot of characters and finding all kinds of hidden passageways in the castle. But then Gaston starts to notice the dark and monstrous side of his friend and with a push from Circe and the Odd sisters, Gaston becomes the obsessive and arrogant hero-to zero we all know and hate.

Pro's:
+ I really liked how we totally got into Gastons and Kingsly's history and how they are actually very connected to each other. And the author managed to twist the story in a way that it made sense in the ending with the Beauty and the Beast movie.
+ The Odd Sisters are starting to break the fourth wall in this book and I found that quite funny and very self-aware of the position the Odd Sisters have in this world. They were hilarious and provided some laughter in this dark story.

Con's:
- This is the second book about 'Beauty and the Beast' as the book The Beast Within was also about this movie. With the amount of Disney Movies in the world, couldn't we get a book about another Villain?

Even though I'm not completely sure why we got another book about Beauty and the Beast, this book was easy to read and quite fun. We learn more about Gaston and Kingsly's relationship and how it in the end all crumbled to dust. It was fun to see little moments from the movie in this prologue and the author really managed to make this prologue fit with the main story. I just hope that the next book will be about a Villain from a movie we have not covered before. No repeats please.

So Disappointing

I have been anxiously awaiting this book as the finale book of the AWESOME Villians series by Serena Valentino….

It was an amazing, intriguing, intense, heartbreaking backstory of Gaston and the Prince growing up together as inseparable close friends, like brothers- until the curse- as told by the Odd Sisters.

I was all set with my 5 stars until the story caught up to the curse. In this version of the curse, Gaston and the Prince do not remember anything of their past relationship. This is where the remainder of the story goes downhill. The rest of the story follows the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast almost word for word. Gaston’s memory returns as he is falling to his death.

That’s where I lost it. No, just no no no!!
Seriously why???!?!!! What a cop out!!! Every book in this series with Circe and the Odd Sisters was so twisty and clever and fantastical and dark and deep… this was a heartbreaking let down unworthy of this exceptional series.. sorry 😞

This was a fun, quick read. I liked learning Gaston’s backstory and relationship with the prince (Kingsley). However, Gaston’s character is so entirely opposite what we saw of him in the movie that it was kind of hard to accept. And did we need another book covering Beauty and the Beast? It would be more fun to hear the backstories of villains from movies not yet included in the series. I am looking forward to the next book.

Ahhhhh! Serena Valentino, you’ve done it again! You’ve created a masterpiece!!!

Belle is my Princess, and The Beast Within was an amazing book! Truly made me hate the Beast 😂 Let me tell y’all, Kill the Beast solidified my hatred for the Beast.
Gaston deserved so much more. His story ended too soon by the hands of others.

I now have my idea who the next book is about, and honestly I hope I’m correct! It’s not what I originally thought the next book would be about, but I need to know more about Princess Tulip!!

My favorite quote is found on page 392: “Sometimes a simple act can cause reverberations throughout your life you don’t expect.”

Me estás diciendo que Gastón y La Bestia eran mejores amigos, casi hermanos?! 🤯

“Remember everyone thinks the villains are born evil. They’re not. they are made evil!”

In this next installment of the villain’s series by Serena Valentino. We follow the story of Gaston and the Prince AKA the beast.

We start by following Gaston from childhood all the way up to adulthood. We see how he grew up and what his life was like. There was so many questions I had about him and they finally got answered.

I have to say I absolutely adore this story because we finally see things through Gaston’s eyes and learn why/ how he became as we see and know him in the movie. All of these books makes you feel so sorry for the villains. The classic odd sisters definitely have their moments and hand in this story.

I love how we even get to see/ read about old villains with the little easter eggs popping up in this book. Over all the ending to me is such a bittersweet feeling. He never gets to see his friend break the curse. The memories flooding through him and finally remembering everything😭! I love how all of these books ties in with the movie. And yes guys I have a huge feeling that the next villain is who I’m thinking of. If it’s not her then I don’t know who it is.

Kill the Beast" is a great addition to the Villains series. Even though Gaston is on the cover, the real villain is the Beast (the prince or Kingsley, a nickname given by Gaston). Gaston did what he did for his love for Kingsley. Over time their brotherly love grew stronger, which brought joy to the King and Queen and concern to Gaston's father. Kingsley was sometimes ruthless but only Gaston could appease his anger. The feeling the boys shared was so intense to the point where Kingsley said no woman could ever take Gaston's place in his heart. But then, Kingsley met Circe on one of his trips, and things went wrong from that point onwards, the Odd Sisters had an active role in their misfortune.

Gaston is the hero not the villain in this story.

"...he saw Kingsley standing there smiling at him, he knew he never wanted to be without him again."

I am looking forward to Serena's next book, which I hope will address the huge cliffhanger at the end. It is going to be epic!

No one can hunt like Gaston,no one is tough like Gaston. No one can forget like Gaston! Wait what?

This book looks into the early life of Gaston and the Beast, or as he's affectionately known here, the prince or Kingsley. This book take the reader into the backstory of Gaston and his father and his family as we learn what happened to his mother. Later on in the book we learn how he and the Beast know each other and consequently forget each other as the wicked curse takes over everyone's lives in the castle and in the town. Once brothers for life, Gaston and the prince had love for each other greater than anybody else only to be ruined by the curse set by Circe and the odd sisters. I have enjoyed every book in this series and can't wait for the next one whenever Serena Valentino writes and publishes it!

Beauty in the Beast is my favorite Disney movie. I was 4 books behind but when I heard that this series was getting a Gaston book, I caught up. It's alright. Not my favorite in the series but with how it ended, the next book should be interesting.

I absolutely loved this book! I've not been disappointed at all with Serena's books! She captures Gaston perfectly, and it's so interesting and heart-wrenching learning his back story and finding out what happened and how he became the villain of the Beauty and the Beast tale. Great writing, she really gets you invested into the characters and making them relatable. I'm so excited to see what else she puts out! Highly recommended!!

It’s not unreadable; but it is a real stretch to tie some of the stuff together, which it tried to do unnecessarily, numerous times. And if you ever question plot holes or irregularities, be content with “they forgot” because that’s the only explanations offered throughout. I think it tried to incorporate too much and tie it too closely to the beauty and the beast disney movie

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales! This story was pretty decent. It wasn't my favorite, however I enjoyed it more than Poor Unfortunate Soul. I feel like this story would've been better off being combined with The Beast Within, maybe as a two or three part book, rather than two separate books. I'm disappointed that Lucy Raynor is no longer narrating the audiobooks, as she was the perfect fit for this series and really embodied the Odd Sisters, however John York did a pretty good job. I'm excited to find out which villain's story we'll be getting next!
