Check CW's on this one, there are some strong k!nks present.
This was a fun, quick read. Like some of John's other books, it's a very formulaic, rinse-and-repeat plot that you can't help but enjoy as a palette cleanser read. It tackles a tough matter or two within it's pages, but overall is a low angst, spice filled, HEA-guaranteed read.
Ben and Ian meet at a holiday resort where sparks instantly fly, and they agree to not exchange numbers when they part ways. The chemistry is off the charts from the get go, and they fall into a semi-D/s dynamic. It's an eye opening experience for Ben, and I love that it teaches him something that he didn't know about himself.
As with John's other books, there's a large element of telling, not showing, and a lot of awkwardly worded time skips. Some of the dialogue also feels pretty stilted and unnatural, with the characters giving an info dump rather than a natural discussion of what happened.
The sport element in this one I feel is low, and I did wish that the hockey aspect had a little more of an impact on the story. Also, this is marketed as a teacher/student story, but again it's not hugely touched on throughout the book. There is a moment of hesitation from Ian but it then kind of... disappears out of the window.
I loved the wider cast of characters, and I love how we get teased with the next potential couple in the series. Rio, Bronny and Monster definitely feel like a found-family for Ben throughout the book. I'm curious to read Rio's book, and the character of Monster definitely has me intrigued and wanting to know more about him, too.
This is definitely a book about an evolving relationship rather than any outside, un-wanted drama, so if you're looking for a (mostly) light-hearted M/M read, this one is definitely for you.
