Sixteen year old Abigail Mitchell wasn’t prepared the day the world ended. Neither was anyone else. But then again, who would be?
While visiting her estranged father, over four hundred miles away from her home in Pineville, Kentucky, Abby learns that the dead is resurrecting and attacking the living. Hell bent to get home to her mother, and boyfriend Conner, Abby is forced to make the journey home alone with her six year old sister Ava in tow.
Zombies are everywhere. Marauders are taking what they want and killing whoever gets in their way. And Abby begins to fear she may never make it home again. Realizing making the trip home alone isn’t going to be as easy as she thought it would be, she decides to join together with another group she comes across to better her chances of survival, and getting her and Ava home safely.
Nothing else matters but getting Ava home safely to their mother, and herself back in Conner’s arms. That is, until she meets Jeremiah.
I had to DNF this book at 15% - too many editorial and grammatical boo-boo's for me to keep going. Although I know that many of the reviews on this site stated the story was great but the editing sucked, I just couldn't do it. Life is too short to read a book with this many errors. If it's not publication-ready, then don't put it out there. Just saying.
Ok so if you've ever read any of my reviews on zombie books you know their not my favorite but I do obviously read them. Picky as I am about them on try to find ones different . This one isn't much different from your apocalyptic books. People on the run to safety daily moving about from town to town or city to city, state to state. Same old same old. This one is well written a few mistakes but not a deal breaker. And definitely too well written as in grammar correct. Too correct. If you no what I mean. It's told from Abbys eyes. A sixteen year old stuck with her sister ava after their father us turned but not before he tells them to go packs up supplies for them and tells them to get to their mothers 4hrs away. They never make it being attacked by a crazy women but getting away then stuck trapped in a bathroom at a gas station about to be eaten when saved by a family group of ex military except Jeremiah the son. He's about 22, 23. Abby and Jeremiah get separated and from the family while out on a supply ringtone awry . They return to the family gone. Ava her little 6year old sister fine with them. All she can think us to get home that's where she is and she needs to. E with her sure her mother is dead too. Boyfriend Conner she assumes is dead after they find out out the Z Virus started. She quickly starts having feeling for Jeremiah and has sex with him, more then once. Then finally upon returning finally to Abbys house and no one being there but his parents vehicle she starts to think their all dead and I'm assuming Jeremiah thinks his parents are. The plan being get to Virginia to a cabin his parents own. But when their quickly over run by zombies then get stuck in a car that won't start they think their done for. When shots ring out and it's guess who ....Conner and Marshall. Abbys boyfriend and Jeramiahs dad.
They get back to connects where they find the family ,all but Abbys mom to find a big not good surprise. No not telling. So I'd say this book Is much the same as most zombie books. Blood, Gore, rotting flesh, stinky people, whacked out people killing each other when not many are left to begin with and the need to survive. Oh and let's not leave out the military safe havens that card never safe. It's just a given.
So it's not a bad book all in all. I mean if your really into them you'll like this book. If you hate cliffhanger ending you'll hate this book unless book two is out cause it's a biggie. But I'd daybreak it. It that long but nit short either so it's a perfect in between. Just kinda gets annoying how the garment is so correct your thinking she's sixteen who talks like that and Jeremiah too. The book mainly focus on those two . Oh but I will be reading the next bookcase if the ending being so abrupt and off the wall annoying . But also cause I can't wait to see how this plays out her telling Conner who's she's been dating forever that she's slept with a dude she's only McKenzie what a month! Yea this should be good. Read on and enjoy.
This is the first of the new wave of zombie novels I’ve read that actually has a believable way a devastating disease could be spread fast throughout America, and it makes the story terrifyingly believable.
Abby, and her much younger sister, say goodbye to Mom. They are off to spend a week with Dad, but will they return on Christmas Eve as planned? Abby hopes so; she’ll miss her boyfriend, Connor, and she’s still cross with Dad for divorcing Mom.
A sad, but very normal, family situation, but Mom’s last words come back to haunt Abby over and over – “keep watch on Ava” – when their world is invaded by the undead and nowhere is safe. Even the military’s efforts fail and it’s kill or be killed for the few isolated survivors.
I enjoyed the story line of the book. The author had the right idea but sadly it was poorly written and needed a good editor. I understand every author has to start somewhere but I do think the author can go through this book and do some rewrites. Or have some beta readers.
I want to start by saying that regardless of some of the issues I had with the writing and grammar in this book, the story itself was amazing. I would call it more New Adult, as opposed to Young Adult, but it was engaging no matter what your age.
Editing is a big issue for me – and apparently many others – so I rate each book on a 1 - 10 scale (1 being the least amount of errors, 10 being, "wtf are they talking about?"). I give this one a 5. There are quite a bit of errors in the beginning, but they do thin out a bit as you go along. There were only a few times I really had to reread a sentence to try to figure out what was being said. But no doubt, it needed editing.
The other issue I have that I find even more annoying than the lack of editing is when the author constantly uses excessively proper speech in their characters conversations. People don’t speak that way in everyday conversation and there is nothing wrong with using contractions. Sometimes it is more effective to use each word individually, but in most cases, it’s not necessary. I kept hoping that particular issue would get better as the story went on, but it didn’t. Even so, this story was interesting enough that I tried to ignore it and just correct those words in my head as I read along.
My last complaint is about the paragraphs and their length. First of all, use them. On average a paragraph can range from one sentence to seven. Though opinions may vary on that, I think that holds mostly true for novel authors. Still, it doesn’t consist of page after page of non-stop sentences. Break them up for crying out loud. It makes it very difficult to follow where you are. And if you look away for a second, forget it. You’ll have to reread half the page to find where you left off. That is one thing I noticed new authors do a lot, but it’s not a deal breaker. And it didn’t stop me from finishing this story.
As for the story itself, I really loved it. I thought Abby’s character was a pretty accurate depiction of how a 16 year old girl might handle herself in the zombie apocalypse. She didn’t go from high school student to zombie slayer over night. In the beginning, she just ran. And really, who wouldn’t. She didn’t do crazy stunts, trying to stop and save everyone she saw in trouble, knowing she just couldn’t. Her sole focus was her little sister and getting her and her sister home to her mother and Connor, her high school sweetheart.
Along the way, she meets up with another group of survivors that consist mostly of a family. I thought that each of those characters was well written and I loved all of them. Especially Jeremiah. He too was written in a realistic manner that made him very endearing. They had a lot of obstacles along the way. Of course, that’s expected. It is the zombie apocalypse. This story did become a bit predictable though. It got to the point that you could tell right before something would happen because the author would basically say, “ok, it’s all clear,” then, “oh wait, now we’re in another predicament.” In some way’s it was too clearly written that there would be a problem or an attack, they went through the motion, fixed the problem then moved on to the next. Sometimes it was just too cut and dry. But over all progressed well.
I think the only reason I’m being so critical of the writing itself is because I really did enjoy the story and would like to see the next one clear up a few of the problems that this one had. If I hadn’t liked the story so much I probably wouldn’t give a crap about these issues.
So the bottom line is that it’s worth the read and I intend to get the next book when it comes out. And for those of you who have issues with cliffhangers, this has one. I may have waited for the next book to release before starting this one if I had known that.
My Devouring Love: The First Weeks by Donna Neville-Theiler is not a bad read. I am more of a romance reader at heart, meaning I prefer reading books where the main characters are faithful to each other to the end. Temptation is one thing, but when you follow through with that temptation that’s where you lose me. There is too much cheating in the real world, which is why I prefer the fictional world to be better. Secondly, the story can benefit from more action, suspense, and gory descriptions. It’s a bit bland.
I enjoyed this book and the writing style. It is sad that there are so many Zombie books out and it is hard to tell one story from another. I did like the writing style and thought the author did a great job telling a story with adventure, suspense a a touch of romance as Abby and her sister Ava are living through the zombie apocalypse and trying to get back home. I hope to read something else by this author that is not a zombie book because I think this was a good read and shows a talented author.
I wasn't for sure what to expect when I started reading this book, I have never read a Zombie book before. I loved the characters, I thought the story was great. If not for so many grammatical errors throughout the whole book this would have been a perfect well written 5 star book! Definitely should have been edited, and if it was edited then I would find someone else to do that job, cause they obviously didn't do their job right. Hope the story continues as well as this book did.
The reason I rate this so high is because I think the characters are relatable and realistic. The main character can be annoying but you have to take her age into consideration. If this situation happened in real life, I believe wholeheartedly that we would cling to someone for support. This was the first Zombie book I ever read, so I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book.
I was going to give this four stars because of how badly edited the book was BUT I just found out Amazon will be releasing a new version soon. The characters were believable and just enough gore and zombie horror to keep me reading all night long. I can't wait for the next book. :)
A zombie apocalypse well written. There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep the reader turning the pages. Better than other similar books. The best one yet.
