The pulse-pounding third novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Lightlark Saga, by acclaimed author and #BookTok sensation Alex Aster
Love kills kingdoms…
Back in Grim’s castle on Nightshade, Isla is reeling in the wake of a brutal battle and the devastating truths it exposed. Her future—and the fate of the world—now hinge on a heart split in two.
Past Isla, who fell in love with the ruler of Nightshade, fights to resist feelings she considers treasonous. The Isla of the present, who has seen the ruin her powers can cause, will do anything to save Lightlark and its king.
As the line between enemy and friend is tested, Isla is more desperate than ever to understand the oracle’s final prophecy and change her heartrending fate. But a storm is coming. And with it, a long-buried evil greater than anything the realms have faced before.
With the clock ticking on her destiny and the survival of two warring kingdoms hinging on her own shattered heart, Isla Crown will either save the world—or destroy it.
Ya know… it was fun while it lasted! Honestly I can’t say I’m surprised that this was disappointing for me, I went in with pretty low expectations and they were met.
It was obvious that this series was originally slated as a trilogy and I think this book would have been so much better if it stayed that way. I can’t say I’ll be reading book 4 at this point.
This is gonna be a long one so buckle up… SPOILERS AHEAD!
Starting out with the good, the first half of this book was FOR THE GRIM GIRLIES!!! There were so many Grim and Isla moments that I adored and I was so happy we got more of them! That being said… still not knowing who’s end game is just annoying at this point. It seems like Oro is still in the mix strictly for marketing purposes.
Grimshaw my sweet deadly sad angel of a man, ALL OF THESE TWO STARS GO TO YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE PERFECT AND THIS BOOKS ONLY REDEEMING QUALITY. Every single tab in my book is for Grim. I swear every time this man opened his mouth my clothes mysteriously disappeared. I feel like this book would have been so much better with his POV! I loved seeing him grovel to win back Islas love (though she doesn’t deserve you). The way this man would burn down the world for her and loves every single part of her flaws and claws and all!!! He’s literally perfect nobody can tell me otherwise.
The overall plot in this was just a disaster, honestly the amount of plot holes was comical. In the first two books I really didn’t care that the plot was all over the place because I was so invested in the drama of the love triangle and the romance but seeing as the love triangle made me want to rip my hair out this time around (more on that in a moment), it was way too hard to ignore the issues with the story as a whole. The ending was extremely rushed and just one huge info dump, it seemed like a last minute set up for book 4. It was almost too low stakes, every single issue was very quickly and easily resolved. The magic system also somehow got worse??? Mainly in regards to Islas power. And listen I know this is a low fantasy series I’m not looking for some in depth complex magic system, I just wanted the most basic baseline explanation of how her power worked!!
Honestly though, the worst part about this book was the drawn out, unnecessary love triangle. This is where all my biggest fears about this book came true. It turned into a weak plot device to add unnecessary drama to a story. Now listen is a love triangle my favorite trope? Absolutely not. But when done right, when it’s actually DIFFICULT to choose between two love interests, they add so much angst and are infuriating in the BEST WAY! However a majority of the time they are infuriating in the absolute worst possible way and this book reminded me why I hate love triangles 99.9% of the time.
I don’t care what team you’re on, it is so abundantly clear this entire series that Grim is set up to be endgame, and if that somehow wasn’t clear in the first two books, it’s even CLEARER in book 3. Yet for some reason the love triangle is still drawn out despite Oro being so insignificant the majority of this book. What really bothered me was how 60% of the book we got Isla and Grim rebuilding their relationship and learning how to trust and love each other again with so much emotion and chemistry for it all to just go to absolute shit by randomly bringing Oro back into the mix in the last 30%. All of a sudden we’re back to Islas back and forth NONSENSE because she’s somehow still in love with Oro and so “torn” even though they’ve spent no time together this whole book and have no chemistry whatsoever. Its just so unbelievable it seems like we’ve entirely lost the plot.
The icing on the cake that made me really want to give this 1 star because it made me feel so icky was Isla having sex dreams about Oro and lusting after him while a few days ago she was getting married to Grim a SECOND time, having spicy time with him in every corner of the castle….. honestly I was hurt for Grim so maybe I’m just defensive but at this point she does not deserve him in my mind. Her and Oro can go live in their own delusional world together, preferably at the bottom of the ocean.
Isla girl, you were simply the ✨worst✨ this book did her so dirty, I genuinely am struggling to find any redeemable qualities in her. Zero depth, zero character development, zero regard for the feelings of literally the only two people in her life that care about her. The way she is playing with Oro and Grims emotions made me want to scream. The back and forth repetitive nonsense of “I love them both” “no I love grim” “but I also love Oro” “grims the enemy” “I can’t be around Oro because I’m the villain” “I love grim again we can be villains together” “Grims the enemy again” “but wait Oro…” OH MY GOD SHUT UP. Don’t even get me started on the way she was ready to kill grim for betraying her and then turned around and did the same thing… this girl expects him to be fully truthful with her yet lies to him left and right???
Oro…. Again. You were there. And pathetic tbh. Truly a waste of space.
ALL of that being said, the first two books in this series were so much fun, I had a silly goofy time and giggled and kicked my feet! Just because I didn’t like book 3 doesn’t mean the same will go for you! I’ve seen a lot of people rave about this book and hopefully you’ll love it more than I did!
UMMM WHY DID I THINK TNIS WAS THE LAST BOOK?! The cliffhanger at the end?! Didn’t want that but wtv. The story was fast paced and I didn’t feel like it was dragging on, BUT the love triangle should’ve been just one line a long time ago, Isla started to piss me off with her indecisiveness. If she doesn’t want grim I’ll gladly take him off her arms
This reviews may contain spoilers we already knew would happen. Read at your own risk ⚠️⚠️‼️
⟢ For the rest of my life, if anyone asks me about my biggest fuck-up, it’s not binge-watching shows instead of studying. Nope. It’s the day I picked up this absolute disaster of a series. The day I let curiosity get me killed, like a damn cat. Every time someone even mentions this book, I swear an angel loses its wings in the most brutal, soul-crushing way possible 🤡. I’m floored—no, fucking floored—that it’s possible to write a book this offensively horrible. I mean, it takes talent to make something this bad.
⟢ Let’s start with the obvious. EVERYONE, their grandmother, their ancestors, and every village idiot from here to eternity knew Isla was going to end up with Grim. So tell me why, in Book THREE, after barely putting in 20% effort for Oro, she’s still dropping lines like, “I love both Grim and Oro,” “Half of my heart belongs to him.” 🤨 EXCUSE ME? I had a damn whiplash every time I read that crap. Is it just shitty writing, or does the author actually think we’re fucking stupid?
⟢ We’re trapped in this girl’s head while she’s with Oro, thinking about Grim, and then with Grim, barely giving a fuck about Oro. Yet we’re supposed to buy this “love them both equally” lie? She’s having a full-on panic attack when she can’t feel Grim but barely bats an eye when Oro is LITERALLY DYING right in front of her. Like…HELLO?! Am I supposed to believe she loves them both? The fuck outta here with that nonsense 🤡.
⟢ Speaking of fuckery, was this book not supposed to be a trilogy? Unless I’m having some kind of brain malfunction, wasn’t this supposed to wrap up? But nooo, we’re getting at least three more of these dumpster fires. Why? To drag out this pointless “love triangle” that’s more predictable than a weather forecast? What’s next? Isla getting god-tier powers…oh wait she fucking did , Grim and Oro still following her like whipped puppies, and some irrelevant plot literally nobody gaf about be fr. I hope all these idiots die and rot. I could not care less 😒.
⟢ And Isla. Holy fuck, Isla. The woman has the personality of an ovulating pig for fucks sake. Bland, boring, and somehow this is the girl they’re all fighting for? Please, for the love of God, STAND UP.
⟢ And Grim. Don’t get me started on this manipulative piece of shit. Every time he does something “cute,” it’s dripping with emotional blackmail. The guy talks about his “nightmares” that only stopped when he met her and how he’s got “no one but her.” I’m sorry, what? This guy is waving red flags like he’s in the goddamn World Cup. It’s giving “my grandma died 15 years ago so I’m a victim” energy. I’m done with this whiny, manipulative fucker 🥰🤡.
⟢ Oh, and the age gap? Jesus Christ. Isla’s dad was Grim’s GENERAL. They had beef back in the day, and now he’s with the man’s daughter? 💀💀 Every time I remember this, I want to puke. The ick is off the charts. YUCK.
⟢ Also Jesus… Grim kills people for even looking at her wrong, and she’s “shocked” that he doesn’t flinch when she says she’s killed people? And then, because he “accepts her darkness,” she likes him even more? DUH, the man’s a murderer himself. This isn’t some cute bonding moment; it’s basic logic. Duhhhhh. 🤡
Reading this reminded me of when I was reading ACOMAF and SJM was shoving Rhysand down our throats like we couldn’t think for ourselves. Somehow this is worseee.
⟢ This whole thing has been a fucking nightmare. I’d go into more detail, but my brain is so fried from this series that I need therapy just to recover.
Grimshaw’s breath stinks, Isla needs to stop begging people to touch her and take a shower , Oro needs to prioritize his sanity and I genuinely from the bottom of my heart hope everyone dies including that stupid fucking dragon, Wraith✌️
Aurevoir, fuck this book, fuck this series, and fuck every bullshit love triangle that drags on for no reason.
*thank you netgalley for this arc—all thoughts are my own.*
➳ 2 ☆
skyshade is the third installment in the lightlark trilogy, and unfortunately this was the worst book thus far. this book picks up immediately after the events of nightbane. we continue to follow isla, grim, and oro, as they navigate this life of love, secrets, and perfidy. while this series has ended on cliffhangers—making the next book a direct continuation of the previous events—this novel emphasizes the cracks and extraneous side quests that are irrelevant to this overall story.
➺ isla : isla is our main character in this series. i was cognizant of what this story entailed especially, pertaining to her character. aster uses a lot of arbitrary plot devices for isla making her a weak lead. in this novel, she continues to explore a way to find a solution to the oracles prophecy, while continuing to lust after both grim & oro. isla was always a very incredulous character, but the jarring nature that was portrayed in this novel was by far the worst aspect of this book. there was not one ounce of inducement for isla's idiosyncrasy. isla has always been a self insert fantasy female lead, however, there was a lot of wasted potential here. she had good qualities to delve into, sadly nothing was explored and she remained the same after three books.
➺ grim : grim is one-half of the love triangle for this series. he was always written as the morally grey + villainous character who kills everyone just for the sake of fulfilling said archetype. while grim is the man i prefer, it does become blaring when the author clearly has favorites. she has always written this series through the scope of ⌞the villain gets the girl⌝ — putting grim on the forefront of this narrative. while there is nothing erroneous about using such facile plot devices, there is no need to market your novels as an “enchanting love triangle”, when the obvious choice has always been exalted. there was a lot of theatrical drama that was redundant and superfluous.
➺ oro : there will always be one character that receives the short end of the stick and this is oro. due to the fact that i am comprehensive that there are a lot of isla + oro shippers, i am unsure why aster did not allow them to go through any real development with each other. if there is a presented trope in which one girl has to choose between killing two of her so called love interests, there needs to be more of an indication and credence to this plot device. while oro is not mundane and futile, he has no genuine reason to be a part of these novels after book one. in addition, he was present in this novel for about ten minutes, and sadly was abrasive and useless the entire duration of his time on page. complete wasted potential on this part.
all in all, there is only so much repetition of comprehensible & stereotypical script that can be displayed. while i am aware this is YA, that does not warrant the novel to be banal and glib. i would recommend checking this out if you have read the first two, but aster herself seems to be unsure of her wants. this book somehow ends with the potential of numerous sequels to follow. there was a decent concept, but average execution.

So... Who told Alex five books are necessary? she's turned what could be an amazing trilogy into a shtty cash-grab SERIES. Whoever you are, mark your days because I am OUT for you 🙂.
I loved Lightlark & Nightbane, and I loved YOU Alex, but I had a gut feeling that I’d end up hating this one, and you know what they say!
Trust your hunches.
Spoilers below kiddos, and it is not pretty.

Her father found this random amazing island and named it after her, Isla, which literally means island in Spanish.
So he named an island Island. Wow. What a genius.
I have so many questions:
I have no idea wtf she does there other than eat fruits and wtf a skyre is and what is the OTHERWORLD 😀
WHAT IS LARK TRYING TO DO AND WHY IS SHE THERE AND WHY IS SHE OUT TO KILL LITERALLY EVERYONE 😫
What is the history between cronan and lark other than the fact that he was her lover and locked her up for centuries once he got bored of her psycho ahh??
Who is this blacksmith and the auger and who are these gods they talk about and where did the power of the rulers come from
Why is Isla still alive and now in the OTHERWORLD when everyone had enough of her being a nuisance in THIS world 🙂

no cuz why did she keep finding out she’s a murderer every 3 chapters 😭

Slut-shaming is not okay but it’s an exception when she actually is one, and a self-aware one at that 😍
She told Grim she wanted to actually try to be his wife, for this to be a REAL marriage, but when he’s not around, she’s over here getting bricked up over her first kiss with Oro and thinking about how she wished she was at his favorite place with him, where he was going to fulfill those promises he made her– WHICH SHE IS A FOOL FOR TURNING DOWN FOR GRIM BECAUSE THAT SCENE WAS SO AGONIZINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND WHO TF SAYS YES AND GETS HIS HOPES UP BUT THEN A COUPLE HOURS LATER CHOOSES HIS ENEMY OVER HIM.
And when she’s with Oro. SHE STRIPS NAKED IN FRONT OF HIM WITH NO SHAME? THEN SHE’S MOANING OVER HIS COOL TOUCH, “It feels so good when you touch me. Don’t stop. Please.” you WHORE.
D-d-d- did you FORGET that you’re MARRIED? TWICE? Did you forget you were BANGING Grim just a few days ago? Did you forget you BROKE Oro’s heart? How DARE she get upset he RIGHTFULLY pulled his hand away.
AND THEN SHE DREAMS OF HER “SURPRISING” ORO IN HIS CHAMBERS AND GETS MAD WHEN HE CALLED HER OUT FOR WHIMPERING HIS NAME IN HER SLEEP.
But then! How was my precious Oro DYING in front of her, dropping the most heart-wrenching lines and this UNGRATEFUL, WRETCHED, UGLY WITCH was freaking out over the fact that she couldn’t FEEL Grim’s BOND?

And I hate to say this guys, but Grim is just a Rhysand from ACOTAR dupe 😓 bro acts EXACTLY like him and the lines and the attitude and all the sex (sorry not sorry)
taking Isla as a wife when there’s never been one in Nightshade = Rhysand marrying Feyre and making her high lady when there’s never been one in the Night court
Am I looking at the same person??

┆ “I don't care what anyone thinks I deserve. I want you. I still want you, even though you're a traitor. I still want you, even though you're my enemy. I still want you, even though you might kill me. I want you, I want you, I want you, and it is the most selfish thing I've ever felt.”┆

╰› so, will u see me again next year whenever the next book comes out? yes, to hate on it because this is not acceptable and I will read so you don’t have to!
So. Wow. the editor was asleep at the wheel for this one, huh? There's a lot of retcons, several errors, and the worst prose yet. I kinda grew numb to the prose in Nightbane quite quickly, and felt the first chapter suggested Aster had TRIED to improve, or allowed an editor to intervene. The first chapter of this book? HOO BOY. The difference is immense.
Fav quote: "THE TUNNEL WAS LIKE A HALL WAY THAT SPLIT OMINOUSLY"
That or the many times she compares things to throwing stars. or the phrase "CLAD IN HER DAGGER FILLED PANTS".
Plot wise, of course, it's.... woof. Cleo has about three lines, azul has one scene, and it's Grim fanservice all the way down. The sidequesting is insane in this series. Isla hops from one place to another with the bullheaded determination of someone incapable of thinking critically (she is a nightmare this book, flipflopping constantly, stuck in this arrested development until she Levels Up and becomes the Most Special Powerful Important Person Of All Time With All The Power Ever. the climax of this book is a looney toons action sequence.)
I continue to fear Aster is somehow psychically picking up on my criticism, because yet again there are several obvious 'clapbacks' to the haters- like the starstick being lampshaded last book, now Lynx being a PANTHER is too. Own up and embrace your silly naming Aster! Waiting until a book later to defend it in canon is just embarrassing.
The lore continues to be so obviously made up as she goes along. Do you remember last book, when it was suddenly introduced that Starlings had been the victims of slavery by the other isles for hundreds of years?? ASTER SURE DOESN'T. Stuff like that is just dressing to her aesthetic idea of fantasy, and honestly. her absolute lack of effort is getting exausting.
Was it good? No. Did I have a good time? No. Will I be continuing the series (that’s right, there’s more)? No. Did we get the answer to the one and only question everyone wants to know? NO!!!
I don’t even know where to start. Tbh, I went into this with low expectations and even those weren’t met. It’s very obvious this series was originally slated as a YA, low level fantasy. I get that. Even so, it’s so poorly done I could barely get through it. The world building? Not great. Magic system? Confusing as hell. Character development? Lol who? Plot? What’s that?
ISLA: (Infuriatingly pronounced “Eyez-luh.”) Our FMC born without powers, surprise! She has all the powers! (God I’m getting sick of this trope). I really hoped Skyshade would build on her background to make her a more likable character. Unfortunately, she had the character development of a wet sponge growing mold - predictable, kinda gross, makes you wanna throw it in the trash by the end. She has zero loyalty to the only two characters who have ever loved her. She does nothing but feel sorry for herself and the fate she’s been given. Infuriating.
Grim: One of two MMC/love interests. Grim honestly carries this entire series on his strong muscly back. All 1.75 stars of it. If you’ve read about one broody, morally grey MMC who is all “touch her and 💀,” you’ve read about Grim. It’s such a stereotype. Don’t get me wrong, it’s one of my favorite stereotypes, but there’s nothing special here. It’s boring and overdone.
Oro: (also infuriatingly pronounced “Are-Oh”) I assume he’s supposed to be the light, morally good opposite to Grim’s dark, morally grey? However his character really has no business in these books past Lightlark. He was on page in Skyshade for like 10 pages and half of that was Isla’s wet dreams of the past. I really wanted to like Oro. I feel like he got the short end of the character development stick.
Speaking of sticks, CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE STUPID “STARSTICK?!” Like Aster, come on, “starstick?!?” That’s the best you can do? My brain pictures something between a fairy godmother’s wand with a little glittery star and streamers at the end and Dr. Who’s Sonic Screwdriver. This thing has such immense power and our girl Isla just forgets where she left it like it’s keys to a 1997 Honda Civic.
Anywho, I really wish this book was more of a prequel and less of a continuation of the first two books. When I say it immediately picks up from Nightbane, it’s IMMEDIATE. There is no introduction to help the reader remember what happened in a book that came out more than a year ago. I would have loved if book 3 was a prequel throwback to when Isla and Grim met/were married before the Centennial. The random flashbacks are not enough for me and it makes the writing so disjointed.
Overall thoughts? A swing and a miss. Three strikes, you’re out, Lightlark. Sorry 🫤.
I'll keep this short-ish (wishing the book was shorter too)
I enjoyed the book, don't get me wrong, BUT you can't just pick up from the second book and then throw in 21245325 NEW subplots, only to untangle them in a way that barely "fits" the story. Like, out of nowhere, we’re hit with a “we need to do 7 things before doing that thing we needed to do first” when the previous book made it clear what their next steps were supposed to be.. or at least that’s how I saw it.
Also, can we talk about Isla? Because the whole “this is all my fault” routine is getting SO old. Please, girl, get over yourself and start focusing on actual solutions. Thanks in advance. 🙃
THANK GOD for Grim and all his shadowy glory. 😍 Honestly, anything he said throughout this book was pure swoon, and I swear he single-handedly saved it. 🔥
Will I continue reading this series OBVIOUSLY! I think I just found this book with too many "wtf this makes no sense" scenes that it made my reading journey very confusing

This series was my first-ever hate read, and wow... what a flaming dumpster fire of chaos 🔥. Normally, I avoid hate reads like I avoid unsolicited spoilers, but this series managed to lure me into its cursed little clutches. Spoiler alert: I read it so you don’t have to. You’re welcome, bookish community. 🙃
Let’s get straight to the point: the love triangle from hell is not just bad—it’s offensively bad. 🤢 Three books deep, and Isla is still doing the emotional hokey-pokey between Grim and Oro? Sweetie, indecision isn’t a personality. PICK. A. STRUGGLE. If I absolutely had to choose (and trust me, I don’t want to), it’d be Grim, simply because he’s memorable in a "toxic ex you keep blocking" kind of way. Oro? Houseplant vibes. And Isla forgiving Grim’s nuclear red-flag behavior? If Grim pulled that nonsense on me, he’d be the main feature in my block list gallery. 🛑
Tropes That Tormented My Soul: ✧ Love Triangle (aka emotional waterboarding) 💔 ✧ Broody, overprotective MMC 🖤 ✧ “I’m Special Because Plot” Chosen One ✨ ✧ Enemies to Lovers (but with gaslighting!) 🔥 ✧ Forbidden Romance (forbidden because it’s TOXIC) 🚫 ✧ Power Struggles (but make them pointless) 👑 ✧ Stuck Between Two Kingdoms (and two brain cells) ⚔️ ✧ Prophecies That Nobody Cares About 🌀
Isla: Girl, if emotional depth were water, you’d be a puddle in the desert. Your self-pity and indecision could fuel a dystopian wasteland for decades. Every chapter had me screaming, “JUST PICK SOMEONE AND MOVE ON.” Instead of character growth, she spirals into Chosen One™ mediocrity.
Grim: Oh, Mr. Emotional Blackmail™ himself. Sure, tragic backstory, blah blah blah. But does it excuse his manipulative, red-flag-packed nonsense? Nope. Every “romantic” moment is basically just trauma bonding with a side of guilt trips. 🚩
Oro: Oro who? This man is the literary equivalent of elevator music. He barely exists, and when he does, he’s about as compelling as a chair. Character development? What’s that?
Plot: Wait, there was a plot? Because this “story” felt like a series of irrelevant side quests, unnecessary flashbacks, and twists so predictable I actually rolled my eyes. The pacing was more chaotic than my sleep schedule, and the climax? Straight-up cartoonish. Honestly, it reads like a bad AI bot spat out rejected fantasy fanfiction.
The Bottom Line: This trilogy was a headache wrapped in a bad decision. Reading it was like voluntarily stepping on Legos—painful and entirely my fault. I hated every second of it, but I guess hate reading has its own masochistic charm. So here’s my official PSA: Save your time, your energy, and your sanity. Don’t be me. 😤
I can no longer defend Alex, I'm sorry but 5 books are not neccesary this could have been 100 pages long 😭 This review is mostly me hating on Isla and simping for Grim so beware... ...WHY THIS SUCKED:
Isla's bipolar disorder:
Girly would sleep with one guy and then be all sappy with the other in the same chapter. Make up your mind hoe. I think slutshaming is wrong but Isla? HOOOOOOOEEE get a life u living sex toy. Can you have a normal conversation without lusting after the guy you’re talking to?
Also she might be the WORST ruler in fantasy history, she’s sooo selfish while her literal population is dying at her feet 😍 “She wanted to back out. Not just because of the danger, but because she wasn’t thrilled about having to be trapped with him for hours on end, in close quarters.” OHHHHH yeah not because of the genocide on your realm but because you’re angrwy 🥺🥺 LITERALLY DIE. DIE DIE DIE
“She didn’t want to be a traitor. She didn’t want to pretend. She didn’t want to be all the things they thought she was.” Then don’t? Who tf is forcing you to be a bitch? GROW UP U R NOT THE VICTIM
“She was poisoning him. She didn’t deserve him, and she was ruining him.”AND YOUR STILL MAD AT HIM?! 🤨🤨
At one point she has this HUGE epiphany because she finds an island in a map and guess what? It’s named Isla 😱😱😱 (fyi “isla” is LITERALLY island in Spanish) and she’s all philosophical “What could this mean?”I don’t fucking know, maybe it means your parents lowk didn’t love you that much 😝“The island is named island? And so am I”GIRL sue your dad. BSFR ALEX WHAT IS THIS PLOT POINT GIRL
And the ONE thing that can fix all the book problems (which is a ring) SHE FUCKING LOSES 😍😍 Watch me start a riot against that bitch 🖕🖕 DIE DIE U USELESS WASTE
Love triangle:
Oro homie, what are you even doing here? I’m so sorry but it’s literally so clear since the beginning who Isla is gonna end up with, and it’s not u girl 😍 GO HOME Why is this a debate when Grim is CLEARLY who she's gonna end up with? I love Oro but he deserves SO MUCH better than island
How are you dragging a love triangle for 5 BOOKS? let it die
AND MY BABY DADDY GRIM? He was so sweet in this book and STILL she was lusting after the sun 😭
“We’re infinite, heart. Never forget that.”
“Kill anyone you want, heart, especially these bastards. Kill me, if it will make you feel better.”
Grim didn’t so much as look at the blade. He only looked at her. Eyes never leaving hers, he reached up and slowly dragged her dagger down his chest, cutting through fabric and skin, until it reached his heart. Then, he patted her hand and said, “Go ahead. It’s yours anyway.”
“I would do it again,” he said, his voice a deep rasp against her ear. “I would do it a thousand times over, heart; you should know that. I will choose you over the world every single time.”
YOU’RE TELLING ME SHE SAW THAT AND STILL WENT AFTER THE GUY THAT WAS SO OLD HE WAS FRIENDS WITH HER DAD? 😍 kys
Too (?) much plot, too badly written:
This book lowkey felt like a weather report, we get told that 1. Lightlark is dying 2. The Moonling land is gone 3. Nightbane is being destroyed by strong storms And Isla still refuses to MOVE? “This is my world”GIRL WHERE its so decrepit it doesn’t even count as a place anymore, y’all are living in hell atp. And she fucking goes somewhere else at the end? WHY
Can we talk about the dumbass writing style? “Somehow, he was able to pour the liquid metal into his hands, without burning them. Somehow, he was able to shape it himself. This was his power.” OKAY BUT HOW?! This is a fantasy book you can’t just be “she suddenly had the power of all the gods” what gods? What powers? WHY NOT EXPLAIN IT?!
“It’s shademade,” he said. “Made from ancient power.”LITERALLY WHAT 🔥🔥 oh yeah I forgot when I use the ANCIENT power, also this dude is like 1000 years old ancient was him as a teenager. WRITE, IT'S QUITE LITERALLY YOUR JOB
Words could never possibly describe how much I dread this book. She ruined the setting by COMPLETELY throwing it out of the window, she ruined the characters by ignoring their personalities and making them one dimensional dummies AND SHE RUINED THE LOML GRIM X ME
2.5 stars ✨️ This book disappointed me so hard im turning into a Karen in search of a manager to complain to. Rtc when i feel like it 🙆♀️😤 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Review? What review? This is a hate rant so bear with my while i extinguish all my anger and put it into this page.
*deep breath* My disappointment to this book is so hard, it makes your Asian Parent's wrath look like a child's tantrum (no offence to anyone) This book? HORRIFYING 😭 IVE NEVER READ A BOOK THAT COULD BE THIS ACTION FILLED YET SUPER FREAKING BORING IN MY LIFE 😭😭 You know how back in the day when we were in school and in English class theyll be like omg go write your own story and mini you would end up killing half of the characters in the book, killing the MC's family, their girlfriend cheats on them, makes their mission a suicidal mission just for the sake of the "plot"?? Yeah this felt like something we would write in English class. There is soooo much going on yet absolutely no progress of book towards the plot. Oh the item that was supposed to save countless of lives? 🤭 ooops, dropped it in the middle of nowhere 🤭 Oh im bored, lemme just go kill bad guys for fun 💅 HOW DO ANY OF THOSE CONTRIBUTE TO THE PLOT IF IT ONLY SETS US BACK??? Yeah too much action for absolutely no reason. Ive been less bored in maths class than ive been bored reading this.
Isla has to be like the dumbest person alive in this book and it just makes me hate her so much cuz GIRLLLLLL youre the one that wants to suffer like tf did we do to suffer with you????? You created your own suffering so stop complaining and pitying yourself every 2 pages cuz im getting sick of it🙄😑 Omg i killed thousands of people *dramatic sob* GIRL WHO CARES, GET ON WITH IT LIKE OH MY GOD😤😒
So she basically only does these 3 things in this book: 1- she starts being an overdramatic queen and sobs hysterically about the fact that "OmG i KilLeD ThOuSAnDs oF PeOplE" and that shes a bad person and blah blah blah 2-After getting over herself she goes ahead and does something stupid asf that has you like🧍♀️ ->🚶♀️➡️Yeah no, the amount of plot holes in this book would create a blackhole in space. 3- THENNNNN when she ruins everything, heheheh, our cutie patootie Mr Grimshaw comes and saves her ahh 😏🙈✨️
Then this is where my misery begins. Since we all read the first 2 books, we know what he did and we "hated" him for it. So he was trying to redeem himself in this book. Trying to win her love back. Yall the things he said in this book convinced me that ill be single for life cuz aint no way???? The things he said have us all giggling. LIKE LOOK AT THIS: 👹 “I won’t pretend I’ll ever be a good man,” he said. “But I’ll be good to you.”
OH MY GODDDDDDD AHHHHH 😭😭😭😭 STOP, IF SHE DOESNT WANT HIM GIVE HIM TO MEEEEE.
Oh yeah sorry, back to my rant. Again, this is where our suffering begins. So we all know that shes in love with both right? *SPOILER* Gorl is married to Grim, and he DEVOTED his life for her, bro bound himself to her so she doesnt die, IF THIS IS NOT LOVE THEN WTF IS THAT 😭😭 *END OF SPOILER* Anywaysssss, she keeps going on and off on Grim EVEN THO HE TREATS HER LIKE A MF QUEEN, HE DOES EVERYTHING FOR HER, FOR GODS SAKE HE WANTED TO HAVE A FAMILY WITH HER AND THEN SHE KEEPS GOING ONE MINUTE LIKE "No iM a BaD GuY" or "BuT hEs ThE eNeMy" or "hE bEtrAyEd aNd LiEd tO mE" GIRL YOU LIED TO HIM THE ENTIRE BOOK TF?? IS SHE FRR??? And then after she does that she goes: " BuT Im StIlL iN lOvE wItH ORO-" and "bUt WaiT hEs ThE enEmY nOw" then "BuT hEs My OtHer HaLF" AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *screams of anguish*
PURE TORTURE ISTG. So grim has been spoiling yoU for the past 75% of the book and then you suddenly see oro and you turn into a highschool girl???? ISLA GET YOUR SHI TOGETHER PUH-LEASEEEE
GRIM IS TREATING YOU LIKE A QUEEN, GIVING YOU EVERYTHING, HE WANTED TO START A FAMILY WITH YOU FOR GODS SAKE. HE TRUSTS YOU WITH HIS LIFE. AND YOURE HERE CHEATING ON HIM WITH ORO??? ORO, GO JUMP OFF A CLIFF AND DONT COME BACK. WE ARE TEAM GRIM OVER HERE
Me with Grim 😏🤭🙈😘😝 Me with Oro 😑🙄🚶♀️➡️😒🤨🙂
GRIM IS THE OBVIOUS GOD DAMN CHOICE- ISLA YOURE PISSING ME OFF SO BAD RN
They were both breathing too quickly, sharing breath, and she looked him right in the eyes as she said, “I love you. I could never not love you.” GAGGGGGGG, EUGHGHHH 🤧 WTF, GRIM HAS SAID THAT TO YOU LIKE 600 TIMES AND YOU DONT SAY IT WITH THE SAME INTENSITY? GIRLLLLLLLLL PICK A SIDE AND STICK TO IT
You know what, ive had enough. ILL BE THE ONE JUMPING CUZ I CANT BELIEVE TS- 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Hehe, cant you see the obvious side im in 🤭? #grimshaw4life
You can name me the number 1 Isla hater cuz aint no way this girl is real (i mean no shi shes not but you know what i mean 💀💀)
The only freaking reason i actually finished this book was for Grim. Hes the only reason this book is getting 2.5 stars in the first place. Alex aster, as much as i loved the first 2 books, i did not want to read a full on 5 book series on this crap. Im only here for Grim and for the drama. Also, Oro barely even made an appearance in this book. Like if it were up to her, shed have him killed rn and make isla end up with grim 💀 Its her obvious choice considering she has edits of isla and grim on her page 💀💀💀💀 SO WHY YOU TORTURING US WITH ORO?????? This book is such a freaking flop and it even made me less keen on wanting to read the next book cuz damn bro. Ive waited for skyshade for 6 months and when i actually got it, you're telling me it's not the final book AND its ass??? Yeah hell naur.
Overall. This book was so ahh compared to the first 2 books that ACTUALLY slayed. Lightlark and Nightbane do not deserve an insult of a book for their 3rd book. If youre wondering whether you should read this series, yessss the first 2 SLAYYYYYY while this one feeds you enough crumbs to keep you crawling till the end.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE IT THIS FAR AND THANK YOU FOR HEARING ME RANT ABOUT THIS BOOK🫶
THIS SERIES IS LIKE, THE BEST LOVE TRIANGLE BOOKS I'VE EVER READ.
🤭Well, I think I'd be content with Isla ending up with either person but, I SWEAR, if Oro gets hurt in ANY way in the process. I will actually die. Figuratively and physically. SO EXCITED EEE
“my wife? You dare threaten my wife? You have no idea how much I’m going to enjoy killing you”
Aaaaand the only stars that this book gets go to 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁GRIM!!!!!
The book could have been good if the writing hadn’t been so damn bad. At @50 percent it became a hate read and I don’t think I will finish the series. The way EVERY SENTENCE starts with he or she, or it is atleast woven into the sentence. Here a snippet for example:
she said “I’m sorry”, meaning it. She knew what it was like the grow up alone. Isla understood now, more than ever, why he had been ready to go through the portal for her. She was all he had.
This one doesn’t seem that bad but it was the only one I underlined so don’t come for me😭😭 there were like a few scenes where 10 sentences all started with she/ he I just couldn’t.
Also the tropes, way overdone. This book had the 3rd and 4th “who did this to you” of the series and like cmon enough is enough🥲😭
Last thing: the choice in the love triangle is so damn obvious. Just stop dragging it out already cuz it’s getting pathetic and annoying
No hate to the writer Alex aster whatsoever she is a sweetheart but this book seriously needed a bit more editing.
This book was amazing. Towards the end, it started to feel rushed, because information was just thrown around. BUT, I WAS APPALLED!
Like when Isla visited the house her father and mother made for them and found out that they both knew they were going to die because Isla’s mom can see the future… I was shocked and wanted to cry a little.
Every moment with Grim had me giggling my feet and shit 🤗
ALSO! I DID NOT EXPECT SO MUCH SMUT IN THIS BOOK! LIKE I WAS BAFFLED! (Definitely wasn’t complaining though… don’t tell 🤫)
When Isla went to Lightlark and Oro had a blade to her throat and still kept it there even after seeing it was her, all I could think was that “Grim wouldn’t do that”. I also thought that when Oro literally threw fucking daggers at Isla because she betrayed him. Grim would just feel so betrayed and think he did something wrong. (If you couldn’t tell, I really love Grim)
As for the plot of the book, I think it was decent. I was very immersed into the story and the twists that happened. However, like I said, the ending felt a bit rushed so it threw me off a little.
And the ending bro… are you fucking kidding me right now?
Isla went to the otherworld, Skyshade, and I’m really wondering how her adventure is going to go in the next book. Is she going to come back on her own or will Grim or Oro (or both), find a way to the otherworld and save her?
