Scouts of the Georgia Frontier #4

A Conflicted Betrothal

Rate this book
A King’s Ranger, a secret patriot, and a love that calls everything into question .

As a King’s Ranger on Georgia's frontier, Ansel Anderson loves his independent life. But he’s also a second son, which means he’ll need the favor of someone influential to secure a land grant to settle his future. What better way to win support than by marrying the daughter of a member of the Governor's Council? Yet Ansel's straightforward plan is complicated by Miss Scott's aloofness and his own growing sympathy for the passionate cause of the Liberty Boys.

As drawn to the enigmatic Ansel Anderson as Temperance Scott might be, he’d be more of a match for her feisty twin sister—who is all too happy to oblige. Not only would timid, nearsighted Temperance make a poor wife for a man trained for life on the frontier, but anyone she allows close to her must share her secret patriot ideals.

When Savannah erupts into riots and intrigue following the passage of the Stamp Act, Ansel is tasked with identifying a spy passing sensitive information to the Liberty Boys and the author of anonymous letters threatening those loyal to the governor. And as suspicions focus on the Scott family, which is he prepared to sacrifice—love or loyalty?

What will freedom cost you?

An excellent historical fiction portrayal of life in the colonies during the decade prior to the Revolution. Imagine your daily life filled with doubts about your family, friends, and neighbors; wondering how you could provide for your family if war actually came; trying to decide what your conscience truly believed and if you had the courage to stand on those convictions at any cost! This novel brings all these into vivid light as you follow the paths that Ansel and Temperance navigate in this troubled time.

I enjoyed the novel and was repeatedly reminded of the cost of freedom won by our forefathers. Stand for what you believe, stand for what is right, and leave the rest in God’s hands!

I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

A Conflicted Betrothal released yesterday, on my birthday! This Pre-Rev War romance set in Savannah, Georgia, is filled with intrigue, secrets, and humorous and heart-warming moments as the Sons and Daughters of Liberty are born. The heroine's refusal to wear her spectacles coupled with her penchant for espionage lands her in more than one awkward or dangerous moment. Here's a sneak peek from chapter 1 in the hero's POV:

Judge Scott had said that Governor Wright did not know whom he could trust among his rangers and militia, but Ansel had not expected to find an officer of the very troop he’d be reporting to in the morning among the Liberty Boys at Machenry’s Tavern.

“Would you like me to introduce you?”

“Er…” Heart thudding, Ansel glanced across the room.

Past the knot of men at the mantel, a pocket door slid open. A young woman peeked out, the hood of her dark cloak accenting the paleness of her oval face. “I’d probably better…find lodgings…” Her gaze seemed to latch onto him, and she gave a frantic little flutter of her hand.

“Is she waving at you?” Incredulity laced Jack’s tone.

“Surely not. I have no idea who she is.” Though never had a distraction proved timelier. Or lovelier. Even from this distance, the pink in the woman’s cheeks and lips was visible, as was the snap of her dark eyes. She must be gesturing to someone past him. Ansel swiveled for his final swallow of cider, releasing a soft sigh of relief.

Playing along with Jack had been one thing. If he met First Lieutenant Jones tonight, Ansel would find himself locked into the role of a Liberty Boy when he needed to build relations and gather intelligence among the rangers without prejudice from either side. How careless he’d been.

“Well, I don’t, either,” Jack told him, “but I’d say she is definitely summoning you.” His throaty tone hinted he wouldn’t mind being the subject of the lady’s attention.

Ansel peeked behind Jack again.

Again, the woman lifted her hand, but this time, she made a clear beckoning gesture.

He pointed at his own chest and mouthed, “Me?”

The dark head crowned with a mob cap under the hood nodded. The door slid closed.

Jack swiveled back from the glance he’d taken over his shoulder and chuckled. “Well, she is quite certain of her powers of persuasion, is she not?”

Ansel pulled coins from his pocket and placed them on the table. “This is an upstanding sort of establishment, correct?”

Jack’s chuckle turned into a full laugh. “She is no tavern doxy, if that is what you mean. Yonder is the door to the ladies’ parlor.”

Of course. Except for barmaids and servants, women would not frequent the taproom. If this tavern made a special accommodation for the ladies, it offered more amenities than most.

His companion rubbed his golden-bristled chin. “Although I’m surprised to see any women here tonight.”

“Me too. Perhaps she is in some sort of distress.”

“And out of a room of men, she picks a perfect stranger to come to her aid?”

It was Ansel’s turn to chuckle. “I own, that sounds fanciful. But I’m prepared to do my best to solve the mystery.”

Jack arched a brow. “Need any help?”

“Will call if I do.” Ansel winked. “Thank you for sharing your table and your insights. I hope to see you around town.” Whatever this woman did or did not require, Ansel risked revealing too much if he continued his current conversation. And he needed to make his exit while Lieutenant Jones faced the fireplace.

Ansel threaded his way through the room on the side nearest the bar, then paused at the rolling door to knock quietly.

A feminine voice answered. “Come.”

He entered, then slid the portal mostly closed behind him—not all the way, for he found himself alone in a small parlor with the lady, who faced the other way at a table with a mostly empty plate before her. She spoke before he could present himself.

“This is insupportable, Frankie. I can’t hear a thing. Could you find me a spot in the corner…” Her voice trailed off as Ansel appeared before her and she looked up from picking chicken off a bone.

“Miss.” Removing his hat, Ansel made a small bow.

Her fingers stilled, her eyes went wide, and her throat worked. “You are not Frankie.”

Temperance Scott is the daughter of a judge in the 1760s in Savannah, Georgia. Compared to her twin sister Tabitha, she is shy and demure. She allows her cousin Archie to court her because she doesn’t think any other suitors will come calling. However, Temperance is a patriot at heart and believes the
colonies should govern themselves. Her ideals may soon cause her trouble.

Ansel Anderson is a second son trying to make his way in the world as a ranger. His father’s friend Judge Scott offers Ansel land and perhaps Temperance’s hand in exchange for spying on the patriots. Ansel is happy to oblige until he discovers Temperance’s patriotic leanings.

Temperance and Ansel must find a way to compromise their ideals if they are to be together, but will it prove to be too much to overcome?

This colonial era book by author Denise Weimer not only had me turning pages but also learning about some less well-known history during the pre-Revolutionary War years, specifically pertaining to the Stamp Act and how those of the patriot cause began to protest the latest imposed tax. Adding to this drama were the conflicting loyalties among members of the Scott family, particularly Temperance who strove to be a dutiful daughter while remaining true to her convictions. Along with subterfuge and danger, the budding relationship between Temperance and a ranger of the king, Ansel Anderson, was fraught with tension, confusion and mistrust. While a number of character names were introduced at the beginning, it became easier to keep them straight as the story moved along. There were some plot twists that added even more interest to the already difficult family dynamics. This author does a great job bringing history to life through her detailed research and has taken what could be an ordinary history lesson and crafted it into a compelling and interesting book.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher via Book Funnel and Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and the opinions expressed here are completely my own.

“…but they could not build a future on secrets and half truths.”

Denise Weimer is another author that I enjoy more with every book I read. A Conflicted Betrothal is such a great title for this novel set in the time just before the Revolutionary War. It’s a story about Star-crossed lovers, Temperence Scott, an ardent supporter of the Sons of Liberty movement in Georgia, and Lt. Ansel Anderson, a Georgia Ranger tasked with sniffing out those very Sons of Liberty. Yet these two find themselves admiring not only the looks of the other, but the true to conscience character each possesses, as well as honest faith. But Cousin Frankie and Temperance’s twin sister cause some interesting, and dangerous love triangles. How can Temperance and Ansel be true to their opposing beliefs, have the honesty that a serious relationship demands, and avoid betraying the other as words become dangerous actions?

An aside here, this strange, opposite political beliefs reminds me of a very well-known political couple of a few years back, each very outspoken in and working for opposite political goals.
Honesty. How can you keep political plans and actions separate from a spouse? How do you remain true to your convictions? This story swept me along, and I couldn’t believe some of the great twists!! Bravo!! Plus another book will follow to tell the story of a couple we met on this story. I want that one today!!

The author’s notes are important as Weimer explains the real-life characters. true events, and then which parts were poetic license. If you love reading historical fiction about the Revolutionary War and how it could tear families apart, don’t miss this book!!

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

A Conflicted Betrothal, the fourth book in this exciting Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series by Denise Weimer clearly shows how the women of the Pre-Revolutionary War days were willing to stand by their beliefs in spite of what the head of the house told them. Off to a slow start, Temperance Scott’s life is much the same. She is sneaking around and not accomplishing as much as she would like as a newly formed Daughter of Liberty member.

About halfway through as Temperance goes with Lt. Ansel Anderson to visit his family the story picks up its pace. Her family is not an easy one as much as Ansel’s family is. However, the more I read, the more surprises concerning Temperance’s family were revealed. An honest look at the way women of the times and the conflicted emotions involved in the pre-war days.

An addition to the series that is both enlightening and enjoyable.

This book takes us back to 1765 Savannah Georgia and the beginning of the revolution that would change the colonial landscape. The Sons of Liberty or Liberty Boys as they called themselves and their female counterparts were beginning their rebellion to King George and his taxes on everything. When the Stamps Act was passed the patriots had had enough. This story is about a rebellious young woman who would risk everything for what she believed and a young man that battles between his commitment to the royal rangers and the women he loves. There are secrets and betrayals and sacrifices. It shows the struggles our forefathers faced and the courage they must have had. It makes me proud of my ancestors, whatever their roles may have been.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

How fortuitous for me that I have read not one, but two books this week that pertain to the July 4th birthday of our nation. The other one dealt with the end of the war, and this one deals with the early rumblings that gain ground in 1765 by the unfair taxes the king imposed on the American colonies. We get to see the secret meetings of the Sons of Liberty, the Liberty Boys, and even a chapter starting up with the Daughters of Liberty in Savannah, Georgia.

Temperance Scott is a young woman who feels the taxes are unfair. Does not like how the king is pushing his weight around. She stands with liberty and all it entails. Unfortunately, not all in her family see things the way she does. She also has a twin sister who can stir up trouble a time or two. Not only that but she finds herself attracted to Ansel Anderson, a King's Ranger, sent to root out the spy or spies who is giving pertinent information to the rebellion.

The author brought to life the lives of the colonists and the stirrings of rebellion ten plus years before it was too late to turn back. She showed how lives and loyalties were divided in families, friendships, and how in the world could a rebellious colonist fall for a king's man? Great historical read of the beginnings of our liberty.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

What I think you should know:
A Conflicted Betrothal, a Christian Historical Fiction by Denise Weimer is the fourth book in The Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. Set in 1765 this book features King’s Ranger Ansel Anderson and Temperance Scott, who calls herself a Daughter of Liberty. While I highly recommend the previous books in the series this book can be read as a standalone.

What you might need to know:
This book is set in Colonial America at a time that slavery was an accepted practice.

What I think about this book:
This series gets better with every book! This book takes us from the backwoods of Georgia to the bustling city of Savannah. Tensions are still on the rise and about to reach a boiling point. This was such an interesting story, Temperance has been raised by a loyalist with strong ties to the crown, however Temperance has a mind of her own. Ansel is a second son who is working to provide for his future. Together they create a story that kept me hooked until the last page. I appreciate how much thought and research the author has put into her stories. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

I truly enjoy Christian Historical Fiction Books. A Conflicted Betrothal by Denise Weimer it is Book 4 in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. I have read the series from the beginning and have been anxiously awaiting the release of this book.

I can honestly say this series gets better with each new book in the series. Book 4 takes us back to 1765 in Savannah, Georgia. Ansel Anderson knows as the second son he must do what he can to secure his future. He feels he can get help from the Governors Council for his future if he married the Temperance Scott. He isn't ready for Temperance to be a total opposite of him. He is a King's Rangers and Temperance was part of the Liberty Boys. nHe must be strong as their relationship grows but things are testing their relationship. I truly learned a lot of history in this book. The Stamp Act was something that I slightly remember from History class, but to read about again really helped me understand that era in history. The author has a wonderful writing style that keeps the reader engaged throughout the entire book. The book is about Faith, Family and LOVE. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. AMAZING BOOK!

This is prior to the Revolutionary War. But it’s already in the works as you can tell from the book description. How they describe themselves as Patriots and what they believe.

Twins! I have always wanted to have twins but haven’t had that privilege yet. My older brothers are twins and I just really love the idea. This book has twin girls. They’re really quite the opposite of each other.

Temperance is the shy twin. The name fits her. She is temperate in her appearance and her attitude. Well, at least her outward attitude. Secretly she’s a Patriot.

When Ansel comes around and Temperance is smitten with him she knows she’s not the right one for him. Because her sister is her opposite. She’s outspoken and feisty and everything Temperance thinks Ansel will need in a wife out on the frontier.

But what happens next? I loved the story of these twins and this suitor. Make sure you grab a copy and read it today.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

A Conflicted Betrothal is written by Denise Weimer. One of the things that I love about this author is her ability to whisk readers back in history. This story is well written and the characters are well developed.

In this story we are transporting back to pre Revolution. We’re seeing the unfair taxes being imposed by King. We see that residents of the colonies starting to push back. Temperance Scott is a young woman who feels the taxes are unfair. She’s the daughter of the Governor’s Counsel. Ansel Anderson is the second born and he’s a ranger for the King. Seeing his position and her thoughts this could be a recipe for disaster.

When riots break out due to the Stamp Act. It becomes apparent that someone has been passing information to the Liberty Boys. Ansel is tasked with trying to figure out who is responsible. Can it be someone in Temperence’s family?

Can you have different views from your significant other? I really liked how the author touched on this. I also love that this is based off real characters.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

A Conflicted Betrothal” takes place in Pre-Revolutionary War days in Savannah, Georgia. As the story progresses, the pacing grows, which kept me turning pages without any lags. I love when a story pulls me, surprises me, and engages me until the end.

Ansel and Temperance are stimulating characters in unique situations. I loved following along with their journeys and how different times were then. It’s hard to imagine being in Temperance’s shoes during this time in history.

I’ve read all the books in this series (so far) and have enjoyed each one—tremendously. The writing is smart, the pacing is perfect, and the characters are so easy to connect with and love. I look forward to reading book 5!

I have enjoyed this whole series. They are all standalone books and don't overlap. It did take me a while to get into this story but once I did, I enjoyed the characters and story line very much. I am a total history buff and love reading about this period of history. The author makes this time come alive and does excellent research. What will your personal beliefs cost you when they don't align with the current laws of the day? Our forefathers had to deal with this constantly and so did the ordinary citizens. We live this through the lives of Temperance and Ansel. They seem to be on opposite sides, but the lines get more blurry as time goes on. Ansel is a King's Ranger and Temperence has a sympathy for the Liberty Boys. However, as they grow closer and tensions mount in Savannah, Georgia, Ansel will be tested in his military duty when Temperence fights for the other side and their love is put to the test.

Opinions were so varied in 1765. Many were staunch supporters of anything the British government suggested, even if it did not make good sense in the colonies. Others were less enthusiastic and inclined to state their dissatisfaction. Ansel Anderson, a lieutenant in the Georgia Rangers, arrived in Savannah to help deal with these conflicting views.

The position of the head of the house was one that was expected to be the only option for that household. This created a problem for Temperance Scott who held very different views than her father. Was she prepared to follow through with her beliefs, regardless of the consequences? This lovely pre-revolutionary war novel gives the reader a better understanding of what the colonists were up against and why revolution was the only choice.

A Conflicted Betrothal, by Denise Weimer, is the forth book in the Scouts of the Georgian Frontier. This story takes place in Savannah, Georgia the just years before the Revolutionary War. This story shows how the characters felt differently about England’s stamp tax on the colonies. The story shows how even members of the same family held differing opinions and how it affected the family relationships. I enjoyed reading of the formation of the Daughters of Liberty and Liberty Boys.

I enjoyed the different characters and the different roles they played in the story. I enjoyed reading of the Scott family and the feeling they have to the situations. I appreciate the struggle Temperance had regarding her relationship with Ansel and how it would affect her and her family. I especially enjoyed how her sister did what was expected of her to help save Temperance.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

I enjoyed this story. I liked learning about a time and place that I didn’t know much about. Although I knew about the Stamp Act, I didn’t know that much about it or how the colonist felt about it. I thought the author did a great job of teaching us something about history that most people may not know much about. I also liked the romance between Ansel and Temperance. I liked how they learned how important it is to stand up for what you believe even when it might be unpopular. I liked how they both had to struggle to know what was most important to them and to find a way to be together. I have enjoyed the books in this series and I look forward to the next one.

Absolutely wonderful characters that tie you in pieces all the way through. This takes place in the earliest time of our country's patriotism, with conflict and in-depth reasoning against the loyalist stance. Tense build up right to the very end. Parlor intrigue and the history behind the Stamp Act riots in Georgia make it quite interesting. The lessons of being true to oneself and one’s own convictions, and determining the point at which it is not only appropriate but imperative that we speak out are carried throughout. You have to love them, even the nasty twin sister.

I received this book free from the author, publisher and CelebrateLit book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

If you love history and standing up for your convictions even in the midst of conflict whether it goes against family and friends beliefs then look no farther for the book for you. This author is so proficient in her historical knowledge that it brings the past to life as you read. I admired Temperance and her inner strength it took to stand up for her beliefs even if it meant losing the one she loved. Ansel is stuck in between being faithful to his position as a King’s Ranger and his loyalty and love for Temperance. Living in Georgia in 1765 would have been difficult as the Patriots grew and stood up against the King and the Stamp Act. I found this book to be very interesting and enlightening. I look forward to reading the next book in the Scouts of the Frontier series.

A wonderful story that is rich in historical facts. I love this author’s writing because she takes her readers to the center of action and gives us a fun journey. I learned many facts as I read the story. It is hard to believe so much happened in this time period. Freedom was at the heart of this story and it was intriguing to follow our main characters.

I usually go into a little detail about the main characters when I do reviews. However I must say that every character had different qualities that enhanced the story. Prudence is awesome and her relationship with Ansel bring readers to engage with them quickly. Danger threatens to harm people as riots are rumored to happen. Don’t miss out on this wonderful story.

This is book 4 in Weimer’s series, Scouts of the Georgia Frontier. I haven’t read the first 3, and as far as I can tell, it’s not necessary to read them first, as any overlaps in characters seem to be minimal. I really enjoyed this book, and pretty much read it all in one sitting. The characters grabbed my attention right away, and I was eager to find out what happens to them. Weimer does a great job on the romance relationship between the two main characters (full of plot twists), plus she describes all the related history of the period in ways that are clear and easy to follow. This is the kind of historical fiction I really like.

This is another great novel by this author. Ansel is a Kings Ranger and unattached. That is, until his chance encounter with Temperance in the midst of the two opposing sides, the Loyalists and Patriots, and their opinion of England’s stamp tax on the colonies. Savannah Georgia is the main setting of this intrigue and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical background of this story. Ansel is a Loyalist and Temperance is a Patriot; both seeing the situation from opposite viewpoints. Yet, as they grow to love one another their viewpoints merge amid the twists and turns of intrigue and both realize that being true to one’s beliefs sets you free. I enjoy historical fiction and this novel did not disappoint.

I have adored the first three books from Denise Weimer's series, Scouts of the Georgia Frontier, and was excited to have the opportunity to read the fourth installment, A Conflicted Betrothal. It may be my new favorite of the series. I loved spending time with the two main characters, Temperance and Ansel. I thought they had great chemistry together and wanted to keep reading until I had the whole book read in one sitting.

I am giving A Conflicted Betrothal a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I look forward to reading the next book from the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series, A Calculated Betrothal.

A Conflicted Betrothal" by Denise Weimer is a book about being true to your beliefs and doing what you feel is the right thing to do. It is about The Stamp Act and The Library Boys during America's past history. But, it is much more than that. It is also a clean love story. It has a little bit of betrayal and forgiveness and then making the wrong done right. If you want a clean read with a little bit of history, then I recommend this series. I don't like to say this, ( because I like to read entire series in order) but, if you haven't read the rest of the series, I believe a reader could enjoy this book as a stand alone. I am eagerly the next book in this series.

In A Conflicted Betrothal, Denise Weimer draws the reader into life in 1765 Savannah, Georgia. The relationship between Georgia Ranger Ansel Anderson and Temperance Scott is caught up in the crosshairs of the controversy surrounding the passing of the Stamp Act passed by the British Parliament, a conflict between duty to the King and being true to one's convictions. The characters are interesting and the plot compelling. Faith and family relationships are also key issues. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to those who love historical fiction set in Colonial America and romance.

You will enjoy this story of King's Ranger Ansel Anderson who is trying to secure his future since he is the second son in his family and his first-born brother will inherit the family farm. When he is assigned to Savannah to enforce the Stamp Act, he begins to question his loyalties. I loved how Temperance Scott was a secret Patriot and worked with the Liberty Boys! I never suspected the person who passed secret letters for the patriots! I recommend this story of early America to others. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Temperance and Tabitha were sisters. Temperance always felt second best. She wasn't as beautiful and she wore glasses! But she was fiesty and determined to fight against the loyalists even if her father and the handsome soldier, Ansel, were members of that exact same party.

How can two people at opposite ends of the spectrum get along? Temperance discovered that it is possible with sacrifice and understanding.

The historical content of this book is absolutely amazing. I really appreciate the research and time that the author put in to write this wonderful story.

I have enjoyed every one of Weimer's "Scouts of the Georgia Frontier" series, and A Conflicted Betrothal is definitely no exception! History is a fascinating subject for me, especially US history.

Weimer certainly does her research, which makes the story even more intriguing. I enjoyed reading about colonial Georgia history, Patriots versus Loyalists, and the Stamp Act.
