I always appreciate when a talented chef understands that the greatest value in a cookbook is the ability for the reader/home cook to successfully craft the recipe. Often, Michelin-starred chefs forget this and just show off their highest culinary technique (see The French Laundry and any NOMA collection). In Convivir, the chef-author tells the reader from the beginning that they can make these dishes and provides substitutions for some higher end and/or rare ingredients.
The book is a joy to read. The author’s personal stories come across in an engaging and informative manner. The visual presentation is lovely with photos for almost all recipes and easy-to-read ingredients and cooking steps layout.
As expected from a Michelin and Jame Beard Award winner, many recipes will stop the reader to utter a “wow” and hear their own stomach grumbling. My wife and I are eager to test out many of this recipes this upcoming holiday season. Though she did say that I should NOT wait to make the pistachio tortillas!
This is a strikingly beautiful book. I was gifted it by my son who works at the same resort as the author, in the Napa Valley. I can’t wait to recreate some of the recipes and dine at Auro and experience Chef Garcia’s handiwork for myself!
