Brendan Tierney, a fireman, lives quietly in the outback Australian town of Greenhill. On the eve of his thirtieth birthday, when he and his crew respond to a fire, he is trapped by the flames. Rescued from death by something he cannot—dare not—believe, he returns home, expecting his lonely life to return to normal. He makes a birthday wish, never suspecting that wishes and dreams can come true—with a little help from his sister and grandmother and a wizard…
When Aeric walks into Brendan’s shop, the fireman’s world is turned upside down, because the sexy guy is not what he appears. Ric has spine fur. Bren hopes that the guy is long overdue for a waxing. No such luck. He discovers that his unwelcome guest is a firecat, the rarest of shifters, who can harness fire.
Aeric recognises Brendan as his forever-mate—for him, it’s love at first sight. True love is never easy when a human is involved. Bren knows nothing about cat shifters or magic. But worse—he’s been betrayed by love, and denies his own deep, burning passion for Aeric. How can Ric convince Brendan to open his heart to believe in a cat’s forever promise? Or will the past come between a fireman and his cat?
This is a wonderful story of purrrrrsuit and seduction. Cats of course are the authority on the subject as none compare with the feline species when it comes to love, at least that is how Aeric sees things. Aeric is a firecat, which makes him not only cat shifter but a rarity among his species. His are a people subjugated to the will of the wizards who control the portals of the universe which allow travel between the worlds. Indentured to his wizard who uses Aeric's magic to assist with controlling the mirror portals, Aeric's life is not his own. Even though Aeric's wizard is a good man who treats him well and allows him contact with his family and sees to the needs of his cat, Aeric pines for his forever mate. Aeric escapes from his wizard and is on the run for a year before arriving on the remote world, Earth. The wizard who's mirror portal he arrives through wants to help Aeric. With the aid of a witch and the wizard, they create a picture designed to attract his mate. Only his mate will accept the picture, Aeric only has to wait until the picture is accepted.
It's Brendan's 30th Birthday and he's fighting a fire at his sister's farm. Of all the things to be doing on a birthday, this was about the last thing he had expected. The barn, where his sister has her studio is awash in flames but her cat is in there and Brendan risks his life to save her cat. A flashover is eminent and the fire is moving at a terrifying pace when Brendan spots the cat, not his sister's cat, but a tabby awash in green and gold flames poised over the top of his sisters cat, protecting it from the flames. He didn't know his sister had gotten a tabby but as the poor creature moved away, Brendan could tell it was too late to save the already burning cat. He scoops up his sister's cat and hears "run" in his mind. Making a break for it, Brendan saves his sister's cat but the tabby is lost, along with the barn.
This is a fast paced story and the second in this specific series, but it is part of the Monster's Ink world, taking place prior to that series. I am a fan of the Monster's Ink series and I am enjoying this series as well. Aeric is exactly as I would expect him to be. He is a proud, self-confident and a tease, just like every cat I have ever had in my life. Brendan is sweet, stubborn and doesn't believe in love. He feels abandoned by pretty much everyone he has ever loved, and those who haven't left have secrets he knows nothing about.
Even though this book can be read as a stand alone and enjoyed, I feel the world building lacks definition as a stand alone and much of the nuances of this wonderful universe are lost without prior knowledge of not only this series but the Monster's Ink series as well. The author leaves much of the world building to an inferred understanding of the creatures and gives only cursory explanations of the political system that governs the universe as a whole and why they feel that Earth is such a backwater planet and yet they expect wizards and shifters to want to come to this planet.
This is book is love at first sight, but at the same time it isn't. Aeric knows Brendan is his mate and begins the process of "recognition", which really is never fully explained. Aeric declares he loves his mate to himself almost immediately, but it is unrequited as Brendan does not return those feelings for the majority of the book. There is much angst and relationship building before Brendan reluctantly admits his feelings with a wash of remorse as he is sure he will be left behind.
Despite its lack of world building, this is a really wonderful story of healing and learning to trust. The characters are engaging and the author draws you into the story and keeps you hoping for that happily ever after. It is a great story made greater by a prior knowledge of the world this is set in. So if you have the time, read the Monsters Ink Series first then delve into the Birthday Boy series and the Fireman's Cat. As a stand alone, not quite as rewarding, but still a wonderful read.
I spent more time feeling irritated than anything else. Brendan's family, friends, and Aeric, are all too freaking pushy and know-it-all,while not bothering to clue Brendan in. Aeric is doubly frustrating because the whole conflict here is based on him not telling Brendan what he needs to know. And it isn't even a case of Aeric not realizing, he knows exactly where the issue lies but still says nothing, which was just stupid and annoying and ruined any enjoyment I was feeling. *grumbles*
I thought that this was interesting…a shifter who's also an alien, and I did enjoy Ric and his sass. I felt like I never got Bren though, as I get felt there were just snippets of his past and why he was the way he was towards relationships. Still, a fun story, and will check out the next one in the series too.
Brendan and Aeric make this on Sizzle! Brendan is surrounded by paranormal with his Grandmother and Sister being witches and he refuses to believe there is more in this world than meets the eye. Then he is saved by Aeric who is a fire cat and has rethink his world. Like all of Astrid Cooper's book this one will land in my re-read file as they always make me laugh and smile and cry a little!!!
