This was a reread and it was just as good the second time as it was the first. This book is cheesy, hilarious and action packed. The characters were great. It was just a good time reading this book again. Highly recommend!!!
So fluffy. And there was almost a love square. Plus an MC that does a whole lot of stupid things that put other folks in danger. Lots of kissing and touching before even having any commitment. I’m going to stick to Connealy’s newer works, which have a lot more depth and relevance, in the future.
A determined Shannon Dysart is on a quest to prove her father's research isn't the word of a madman and that he really did find treasure in the Wild West. Then she finds herself stranded, with an aimless wanderer her only way out. When a band of villains threaten to steal Shannon's map, will she be able to see past the gold that colors her ever decision, and will Gabe Lasley, a Wyoming rancher, on his way to visit his brother, accept his surprising need to protect a woman who doesn't seem to have a lick of common sense? Or will they discover that a true treasure rooted in love and faith has been within their reach all along.
I absolutely loved the setting for this book - the depths of the Grand Canyon. Connealy obviously did her research as her descriptions of the canyon and how it looks during the various times of the day were incredibly well written. Filled with a touch of humor, a spunky heroine, a never ceasing caring hero, and a wild bunch of villains, this was definitely an enjoyable historical read. A strong faith thread that helped Shannon learn that all that glitters is not gold and faith in people is more important than the things in life rounded out this delightful read.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "No parent can do better for a child than to let her know she is loved."
"Well, I'm very certain the good Lord doesn't have a different set of rules for men and women."
"What happens after death is between a man and God. And the choices a man makes about faith come before he dies."
This was a great read! I really enjoyed it! It was a cool storyline! The characters were fun, I liked that their were two romance stories and that each of the four characters ended up falling for the person that many people would say was the least suitable for them- but it all worked out as God had planned! I actually thought the villain was really interesting, the motive behind her longing for gold was a very unique one that you don't see very often in stories. This book reminded of the National Treasure movies, except in a historical setting which I loved! But one I didn't like about this book was the physical affection between Gabe and Shannon. Yes this book is clean, but the amount of kissing and cuddling annoyed me, especially because by the end of the book they have only known each other about a week!
I received this book as an ARC from Barbour Publishing. It's being released May 1, 2011.
Haha. I don't know what it was about this book, but it was kinda cheesy! LOL I think the point of it is to be kinda silly, so I guess that's okay. It was quirky for sure.
You've got Shannon who has gone out in search for a city of gold to show the world that her father wasn't crazy, although I think she might be.
You've got Gabe who is on his way to his brother's house, who I think might just be the dorkiest male lead ever.
You've got Lurene who is just freakin' crazy psycho.
You've got Tyra who is out to snag her a husband, which would be Gabe.
You've got Buck who is out to snag Shannon, his intended.
We get the pleasure of following ALL of them along as their stories intersect and they all come together one way or another.
The book overall was decent. Like I mentioned, it was quirky...but I also found it kind of annoying. There's a big to do over propriety in the book. I get it's like historical, so it goes along with the times. A female isn't supposed to be alone with a male, blah blah blah. But I could hardly get through the bits in the book about this. The parson and others got on my last nerve. That was the only truly annoying part for me.
None of the characters were all exceptionally likeable in my opinion. I don't know, this one just didn't hit the spot. BUT, I imagine that loads of people would like it. It's got some action, slight cheese ball romance, and interesting humor. I say, go for it! :)
If you’re looking for a fast-paced romantic cowboy story that will have you laughing one moment and tearing up the next, you have to read a Mary Connealy book.
Deep Trouble follows Shannon Dysart’s quest for the treasure her father claims hend in the southwest. She leaves fou her upper-crust St. Louis life in 1881 with some hired guides and the cryptic map left by her father. What follows is an adventure that takes the reader deep into the history of Grand Canyon and Shannon Dysart’s trouble.
If you’ve ever read one of Mary Connealy’s books, you know that so far I’ve only scratched the surface. In Mary’s books, none of the characters are ever what they appear to be at first glance. Shannon’s hired guides should be honorable, her long time society beau should be a helpless greenhorn, and the cowboy who comes to her rescue, Gabe Lasley, should leave her in a safe spot and go back to his own life. But of course, none of that happens.
And just what is the treasure that Shannon’s father found in the depths of this mysterious and beautiful canyon? Shannon and Gabe discover it, and you might also when you read this book.
Mary’s books are perfect reading for any time. My favorite time to read one of her stories, though, is on a weekend. That’s when I have chunks of time available to devote to one of my favorite authors.
Deep Trouble is available in paperback from Barbour Press or as an e-book from Amazon.
I received a copy of this book as a free download from Netgalley for my review.
I would actually rate this 3.75 stars. I love this author and love her writing style. However, I didn't really like the storyline all that much and the story seemed to drag a little for me. Not my favorite of this author.
Romance, outlaws, and betrayal. A perfect novel of the Wild West. I enjoy reading this novel, especially the quest to find the city of gold.Shannon's map rooted in love and villains.
The story idea was great and the author often threw out some pretty witty one liners. However, this story never topped three stars for me. I have pondered why that might be and here are my thoughts. The first reason is the pacing of the story seemed a bit slow, although it did pick up near the end. As a part of the pacing issue, reason two rears its head--there were at times extraneous bits (observations, recollections, musings, etc.), put in for comic value or mmaayybbee character development but bits that did not actually advance the plot, bits that slowed down the pace of the story. Usually, this causes me to scan-read or skim-read and I realize now that I did read quite causally (rapid, inattentive reading, just shy of scanning the book) probably for this "extraneous bits" reason.
Another second book in a series that doesn't seem to say so anywhere on the cover. Mary Connealy writes stories with far fetched plotlines. Once I took a deep breath and chose to suspend my disbelief, I enjoyed reading this one. A few bits reminded me a little too much of the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, like the whole idea of the heroine/hero following her/his father's treasure map, but since I really LIKED Indiana Jones, that wasn't truly a tragedy.
Bummed about this one! It seems Mary Connealys books are a hit or miss for me. This one was hard to get through.
I felt like the main character was single- minded about finding the “city of gold” in a way that felt so worldly and greedy. Even though the author tried to portray the opposite, it felt very shallow still.
There was hardly any depth to her character that made me want to keep reading, and even when the main characters develop a “romance” it doesnt feel authentic in any way. I wish there was stronger elements of faith and more moments of sacrifice and love, but it felt very cheesy and shallow.
On top of that there were too many different perspectives happening, and I wasn’t invested in any of them. I skimmed the last half of the book.
*deep breath* WHY DO THEY THINK THIS WILL WORK? I hate the city girl and country boy trope. And now, not only do we have that, we also have city boy and country girl. And neither one of them is going to be happy. Their marriages are going to suck. And they act like it’s all fine. It’s not. 5 stories of your grandmas furniture aren’t going to fit in your little ranch house! And riding across Arizona is not equivalent to ranching. They are setting themselves up to be incredibly unhappy and that should not be romanticized.
*steps off soap box* (what the heck even is a soap box??)
Mary did it again. She reeled me in from the beginning and kept me entertained. I really enjoyed this book!
The characters were like friends. I was intrigued to know about the treasure. I had to figure out a f there was going to be a wedding.
I have never been to the Grand Canyon. I never even really thought about it. Having read this book, it is now on my bucket list of things to do! I always know a book is amazing when I google or Wikipedia a place so that I can find out even more about it.
If you've never read one of Mary Connealy's novels, go out and buy one now. She combines romance, cowboys, and humor in a way no other author can match. In Deep Trouble, Gabe and Shannon are not right for each other in every way imaginable, yet they are down to each other as they face the worst trouble of their lives with the backdrop of the Grand Canyon.
This author is an amazing writer! The story is not slow and throughout the story action is all around. I was so intrigued by the story that it was hard to put down. In the story, it felt like you knew what was going to happen and then out of nowhere the story changes. If you love westerns, bad guys, romance, and a desire for action, this book is a must read.
This was a barely four star book for me, simply because I found Shannon incredibly annoying. I loved the rest of the characters and the story was interesting. Shannon was just super whiny the entire story. Like to the point of whining instead of getting away from a kidnapper whiny. So with the exception of not really liking her. I enjoyed the story.
4.5 🌟 Such a cute read. The first chapters were actually really funny!! I did find that it started slowing down in the middle & I kinda of got bored at times, but the ending picks back up. Very cute read & I will definitely read more from the author!
I really think romances are best when they incorporate humor. This book is really funny. Though there is humor, the book really does have a good message. I really enjoyed this rom com.
I really enjoyed this story. It had a lot of humor. The female lead was a bit whiny for my taste but she grew on me. In the end it was a pleasurable read.
I really enjoy this author. Connealy does a superb job of voicing and fleshing out her characters, and her descriptions of action scenes are fantastic. Humor and adventure pepper her stories.
