The overall message of this book is something that needs to be said, and definitely needs to be put out there. It seems so many people are obsessed with finding the perfect diet or weight-loss program, and Tara simply says we don't need more programs; we need to learn to listen to ourselves and our intuition. It may seem simple, but in this noisy, chaotic world, its often the last thing we turn to.

I gave this book five stars because I feel its such an empowering and important message. Otherwise, it is a very simple book (and that is actually a good thing). Again, we (as a society) gravitate to the complicated and overly-complex because we believe that is how things must be in order for them to work! If so, wouldn't they be working? Wouldn't we have more happy people with fewer weight issues in this country if that were the truth? So maybe the whole idea of listening to ourselves and learning to trust our intuition is something that is worth investigating.

There is quite a bit of yoga in this book, but again, it fits in with Tara's overall approach of ease and gentleness. There is nothing in-your-face about this book. Its like having a chat with a good friend, and she's telling you what works for her, and if you want to try it, great; if you don't, that's great, too. There is no pressure, no guilt, and a major emphasis placed on (you guessed it!) making your own rules!

The recipes are also simple but definitely nutritious. They are all plant-based and contain simple ingredients and a simple prep process. There is nothing overly complicated here, either: just straight up good food, prepared simply and deliciously. There aren't a ton of recipes, but the ones that are included are so versatile that you could have them a million different ways if you wanted to.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this book. Tara's message is desperately needed in this world, and I really gravitated to her gentle, laidback attitude. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a review.

The first thing that struck me when starting this book was this: the author looks like such a laid back, adventurous, awesome lady. I would not mind hanging out with her and learning yoga...and I think that sets a wonderful tone for a book about making your own diet rules. And I like the tone of this book as well, it is casual and friendly with a little quirkiness tossed in as well. This is a book about getting in touch with yourself, that is an idea I can certainly get behind.

The section on food had me enamored, starting off with a reminder of how as children food gave us pleasure. I can't remember the last time I ate for the joy of eating, I am a skinny little thing and have never cared about my caloric intake, but with food intolerance and IBS leaving me afraid that every thing I eat could possibly make me sick, yeah food has not been fun for me for a long time. I would love to return to my childhood love of eating.

I like how it talks about being intuitive and going by feeling and basically just relaxing. These are things I strive towards so reading it can always be a good reminder. Of course the instructional section on yoga was very well put together, no surprise.

Overall I have no complaints about this book, it is well written, friendly, and has a great tone. I suggest giving it a read.

The book gives some good guidelines to eating healthier and starting yoga and meditation practices. It is REALLY important for the reader to remember that this is in Tara Stiles' voice, from her perspective and with her personality. Those that critique her for never having to lose weight or the like seem to forget that she has had her own food issues in the opposite experience. Leave your judgements behind, accept that this isn't a HOW TO book but a how she lives her life and what could help you. If you bought it for a HOW TO, you're looking in the wrong place.

I thought that a book about creating one's own diet - based on what one enjoys eating, or whatever foods one prefers - would be a good premise for any eating plan.

What I found was a book full of pictures of the author (in all sorts of quirky/yoga poses) in what appears to me to be more about the author showcasing herself (and how skinny and flexible she is) than any sensible eating plan. Does the world really need yet another diet book from rail-thin models who have clearly never lost any significant amount of weight? I think not. Pass.

Note: I read this book for free at B&N with my nook - I did not purchase it.

Good philosophy, poor execution. I loved the intuitive living approach and the information about yoga and meditation. The recipes were an example of how a vegan diet can go wrong, however. I would personally add much more protein to most of the meal recipes. However, it did demonstrate how simple preparing fruits and veggies can be. Readers should beware of the orthorexic undertones in the food section.

I have mixed feelings overall.

Yoga, meditation, and healthy eating are the foundation of complete mind and body well-being. Make Your Own Rules Diet by Tara Stiles focuses on these three areas as essential for living a fulfilled and joyful life.

I was lucky to unexpectedly meet Tara Stiles at her book signing after taking her Free Flow Lets Go yoga class sponsored by Goyogaco and W Hotels in Scottsdale, AZ. It was cool to get a hug from her, and then to read in her book how much she values the joy of hugging!

At first, I thought Make Your Own Rules Diet would be primarily about recipes and healthy eating. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it is so much more, offering motivation to cultivate daily at home yoga and meditation practices, and a glimpse into Tara's history with food - the healthy and the unhealthy.

Create Space & Sensitize

The first part of the book spends time convincing us of the importance of getting back to the necessity of feeling. We are so programmed to put what everyone else thinks and what advertising tells us we should want before how we feel. It is too easy to get caught up in doing the things we think we are supposed to do because everyone else is, and to ignore all the signals our bodies send us about what is right and what is not.

Tara Stiles sends a gentle yet powerful wake-up call that there is a better way through her latest book. She calls us to create space in our lives, remembering to breathe and allow our power to know whether something is on the path to our greatest life or not to shine above everything else.

Yoga Practice

Tara Stiles owns Strala Yoga in NYC, started the Strala yoga movement across the globe, and provides yoga videos on YouTube.

Obviously a major yoga advocate, Tara briefly presents the health benefits of yoga. Since we have already heard these before, she spends more time advocating the significance of even just five minutes of yoga in the morning before getting the day started. As with meditation, it is amazing that a simple five minutes in the morning can change the course of the entire day, and so true.

The book contains several yoga routines for different purposes, such as morning energy, body awareness, and strength. This section contains useful tips for doing the poses, along with a picture of every pose and straightforward instructions.

I appreciated this section, because sometimes I don't feel like turning on a video but want to get in five or ten minutes of at home yoga. These customized routines take the guesswork out of whether or not the sequence of poses is optimal.

Meditation Practice

According to Tara, meditation doesn't have to mean sitting cross-legged with your thumbs and index fingers touching for thirty minutes a day, although it can be. Meditation can be doing yoga, going for a walk, or doing the dishes. Meditation can also be a few minutes in Savasana after yoga class or a few yoga poses, which is my favorite way to go!

Whatever meditation practice you choose, the most important thing is that you are creating space and sensitizing, paying attention to what your body is telling you about what you need that day. Similar to the yoga tutorials, Tara also provides several meditation styles accompanied by simple how-to instructions for anyone looking to give meditation a try for the first time or to expand their practice.

Time in the Kitchen

I have been trying out the recipes in Make Your Own Rules Diet, taking the hint from the title that it's okay if I make a few ingredient modifications to fit my personal tastes and preferences. The recipes are simple and easy to follow, not using too many ingredients or requiring over the top cooking techniques. The most important thing is that we are getting into our kitchens, finding joy in the process of preparing healthy meals throughout our lives. Because KFC isn't gonna do it for us.

Tara discusses her history with an eating disorder and long stretches of days consisting of cereal for dinner and a strict diet of processed foods. She admits that the produce section at the grocery store was at first uncharted territory, but has become a staple in her fierce regimen for her most healthy life.

I have been enjoying the smoothie recipes (Healthy Frosty and Thin Mints Girl Scout Cookie are a few of my favorites). On the savory side, I was astounded to discover that cashews are the secret to a great cheese sauce substitute in the Mac n' Cheese recipe.

While not claiming to be vegan, Tara states in the book that she is a vegetarian who avoids dairy (and booze). The recipes appear to be vegan, but this is not a bad thing. Some of the recipes don't necessarily avoid gluten or sugar. In the vein of making my own rules, I simply made substitutions, such as using stevia instead of maple syrup in the smoothies and zucchini squash instead of pasta in the recipe for mac n'cheese.

One of the best pieces of advice in the book is to go with the flow when it comes to a loved one's cooking during a visit, even if it isn't the healthiest dish ever created. Great tip for the holidays!

Get the Book!

Make Your Own Rules Diet is beautiful, packed with images of healthy foods and yoga poses. It wraps up with 7 day and 30 day eating and yoga plans to kick start optimal health. Being easy and creating more space within ourselves and the world around us are what it's all about!

Offering more than recipes, this book has been a reminder to me of how important it is to create the space and time for daily yoga, meditation, and healthy meal prep - even when I don't feel like it. This book is great for anyone looking for a jump start to a healthier life in the new year, and would make a perfect gift!

Quite simple, yet powerful and inspiring message: everything that you want is in you; you don’t have to find “perfect diet”, new fitness trends or another wellness sensation. You make your own rules in every aspect of your life. Thank you.

I really like Tara Stiles' approach in Make Your Own Rules Diet. Like many of the new health and fitness books coming out, this one takes a more realistic approach than the books that came out ten or twenty years ago. The books that suggested you change everything and try to stick to a ridiculously, demanding diet and exercise regime for the rest of your life. Tara does a great job of breaking down the rules of the world, and teaching how you can get to know your own rules, or what you need to do to get where you want to be physically, emotionally, and spiritually. There are plenty of strategies in the book to help you get on track, but ultimately this book is about inspiring you to make your own way. Nobody can walk your path for you, so why not make your own rules. I found the parts of the book where the author opens up about her own struggles to be inspiring. The photos and artwork make it a unique meditative book you'll want to read through many times. If you're on the fence about reading this book, you can find Tara Stiles on youtube. Check out her videos and get a better understanding of one of the coolest yoga and health teachers on the planet today. I received a review copy of this book from Hay House publishing for review purposes. I was not paid for my review, and my opinion is my honest assessment.

I think Tara is one of the best yoga teachers out there and she's very kind. This book is not yoga-only but also includes food and self-help (meditations mostly). I think that's a pity because that's why I couldn't give this book a higher rating. She has some good points about self-help but it was repetitive, especially the first chapters. The meditations are nothing new. The recipes were just ok, nothing special if you are already a vegan with many cookbooks. I've read another book about yoga/food/selfhelp called "Yoga for real life" by Maya Fiennes and honestly I liked Maya's book more, it goes much deeper. Also the chapter pictures look very grainy, as if they are of bad quality. There are a few chapters about yoga but (compared to her other books) she doesn't really tell what they are good for. You just get some series: one for the morning, one to get all sweaty, one for self-control, one before bedtime etc... and some of the poses you will find in the different series. (which is of course, also repetitive) Only looking at the yoga stuff, this book is nothing compared to her other books.

My suggestion? If you want to know all about yoga, buy one of Tara's other books (which I think are great). If you want a book about yoga lifestyle (more about the spirituality, meditation etc), buy Maya's. And if you are interested in food, go buy some vegan (even raw) cookbooks.

Let's be clear...although I only rated this book a 2, I know MANY people will be fully inspired after reading it and I can appreciate that. Tara has an easy writing style that is calming and supportive. Anyone who currently practices meditation, yoga, and healthy organic eating practices (or is looking to start dabbling in any, or all, of these things) would greatly benefit from reading this book. There are some descriptive (picture accompanied) yoga routines, meditation tips, and even a month long healthy-living plan you could follow if you chose to. She also includes quite a large number of recipes, some of which I want to try. Ultimately, this just isn't my type of 5-star book.

I got this book for free by grabbing a Book of the Week card at Starbucks and I was instantly hooked by the author's friendly tone and the idea of making your own rules to get healthy. I've been doing meditation occasionally and it's been awhile since I did yoga, and this inspired me to do both much more regularly. The recipes weren't the best for me since they are vegan/vegetarian but I got a couple good ideas and figure that once I get a bit more in tune with my body, I'll be able to figure out what I want/need to eat.

This book was relaxing and friendly to read so much so that I still open it from time to time. If you feel like reading a cook book that is just as much about why we want to nourish our bodies, this is a great option. I feel like she gets really personal about her body (and trauma to her body) at some point, but doesn’t distract from the beauty of eating healthy.

On the other hand, I’m not necessarily going to grab this book to cook for a dinner party because it’s mostly basics. Still, the added bonus of yoga moves and her personal philosophy are worth their weight in gold. Good stuff!

I really enjoyed the artistic layout of the book and Tara's writing style. I definitely found a lot of things that I think will be really helpful for the path I want to go on. It's all about getting to know yourself and your needs through yoga and meditation so that you can make your own rules to live by. There are some great yoga routines and recipes in here as well that I can't wait to try!

This book gives you tips for your yoga practice, diet, meditation, and attitudes on life. I was a huge Tara Stiles fan when I first tried yoga, but after trying out different styles and teachers, it does not seem like her specific "yogi-life" is that ground-breaking. I also started to read one of her other books, which seemed to be copy pasted in part from this one ...
Regardless, it is still a nice book to read if you feel like adopting a more positive way of thinking.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book. I love yoga, but for a big girl some of the poses are difficult. Truth is that medicine has not solved weight issues and diets don't work. Even your own rules. I like Tara Stiles, but unfortunately this book doesn't change anything for me. Sadly.

Buy this book, and then dedicate yourself to spending time with it. Put all your other books aside for a few months and really give yourself the chance to soak up the wild intelligence this book has to offer. This is perhaps the most forward-thinking, healthy, positive guide to learning how to care for yourself from the inside out that has ever been released.

This book stands light-years apart from other wellness and eating books. There is a part in each one of us on Earth, that wants to thrive and feel the experience of feeling really good and there is another part of us that gives up. This book is the best companion a human being can have to chart the waters of health, wellness, prosperity and feeling totally awesome. Reading this book will squash the part of your mind that wants to give up and give great energy to the part of you that wants you to THRIVE!

When we feel totally awesome on the inside, this becomes our greatness that we share with the rest of the world. From this healthy place all good things will come. More creativity, healthier relationships, more laughter, an easier feeling in life... the list continues as you continue live this healthy adventure - one day at a time.

Just reading a few pages a day will make you feel better about yourself. The greatest and longest relationship we have in our life, is the one we have with our self. When we care and nurture the self first, we discover an ever-deepening wellspring of love and kindness for all those around us. We feed ourselves with love and then all those around us will organically benefit and receive the same gift we have chosen for ourselves.

All of us aspire to feel better, to feel a greater sense of ease and relaxation throughout our hectic, and busy lives, and this book is the great companion, the great champion, the greatest cheerleader because it directly speaks to that place inside of each one of us that wants to live with great vibrancy in the world. This book will empower the part of you that wants to feel AWESOME! - Especially on days when you don't start out feeling so awesome.

You're going to read this book, then love this book ,and then live the love that comes to you from this book to your heart. What a great joy this book has brought to me and it is my hope that it brings you to this same joy and love for yourself.

To us! That we may live a vibrant, exciting, healthy, loving life.

This is perhaps the smallest cost for a book that will deliver life-long practices of inner peace and joy to your mind, body and soul.

May we all be well, happy, peaceful and loved ~

Let me begin by saying 2 things: 1) I like Tara Stiles (to the point of following her on IG and practicing her Strala videos regularly) and 2)I got this book as part of a free download at Starbucks.

The first made me excited to reading this book and the latter made me glad I didn't pay for it.

I'd expected some good writing with tidbits about Tara's life here and there. Instead, the book turned out to be an overtly "woo-woo" type of book with yoga routines and recipes. Although I appreciated the friendly tone she had throughout this book, a lot of what she talked about sounded like filler. Also, some parts that might've grounded the book/made it more accessible to people were glossed over.

Another thing: for a book listed at 300+ pages, this was a v. unsatisfying read. The first third was the "actual" book (with Tara explaining the need to break out of toxic routines, embrace creativity, etc). The middle third is composed of various yoga sequences. The final third is made up of vegan recipes.

My best guess is that this would be a good book for someone who is interested in yoga but prefers Western names for the poses over the original ones as well as almost no discussions about the spiritual aspects of yoga. And, hey, if that's what you're looking for, then you'll find it here.

For me, this book lacked substance, had a beginner's approach that annoyed me, and it might only be worth if you borrow it from the library instead of shelling out money for it. V. disappointing read.

Meh. There isn't much here that you can't find everywhere. The gist: there isn't one diet that will work for everyone; you shouldn't "diet"but instead you should make a life change and do/eat what makes you the best you. It's a pretty simple and ubiquitous sentiment and one that goes by lots of different names - intuitive eating is the one most will recognize.

Also? Don't kill yourself in the gym, just do yoga and meditate.

If you lean towards the hippie end of the spectrum, like to eat healthy and simple foods, enjoy meditation and yoga, and don't want a prescription for super fast weight loss, this is your book. If you do want a prescription to help you make your "life change", there is a 30-day Rx in the end.

A light, happy little book that is mainly about listening to your intuition and treating yourself with compassion. The title is odd because it sounds like it's a lot more about a Diet than is actually the case (maybe for marketing?) But the overall message is really just move more, eat vegetables, breathe, and do what makes your body feel good. Even when some of her more specific suggestions venture a little into la-la land -- I'm not going to throw my scale and my entire pantry in the trash today, sorry, and I also don't buy that lifting heavy weights results in stress and aggression -- it comes back to the rule of making your own rules. I can get behind that.

I got this book as a free download I think from Starbucks a while ago and never got around to it. I like the simple recipes included as she acknowledges how hard it can be to cook healthy while leading a busy lifestyle and the recipes are very quick and easy. I also love the smoothie recipes as that's my go to breakfast most of the time, but the rest of the book is pretty standard "be free and be happy" fluff... As if someone's Instagram account was made into a book. I got nothing new or mind blowing out of it. Very simple yoga and breathing stuff, so for someone who literally never heard of yoga before, this might be helpful.

I really liked this book. I can appreciate her philosophy on wellness and took a lot out of this book. I like the flexibility because it can allow me to adapt what I've learned to my busy schedule once the school year starts again. I personally need slightly easier and cheaper recipes for day to day, but I do plan to try out some of her recipes this summer and I will try to make them every so often during the school year. Most significantly, this book finally inspired me to clean my bedroom! I would recommend this book to other women, especially if they deal with stress, anxiety, depression, or body image issues.

After quickly previewing this title on my PC (the download version is a little difficult to read), I know that I want to purchase an actual copy of my own!

I found the author's style to be easy to follow and enjoyable to read. She does not preach or lecture or look down on others, but clearly and openly offers the guidelines to follow her healthy lifestyle. There are simple Try It Now activities - and yes, I did try a few right away! I look forward to following the morning yoga routine, and also making several of the delicious-sounding smoothies.

I can't wait to get my own copy!!

Reading this book felt like I was actively doing yoga. I was breathing deeper and remembering to take care of myself. I have increased my yoga practice since starting this book and am looking towards healthier meals. I like the idea that practicing yoga will help your body want more natural options, it was a great book and a great resource to have in the house. I am excited about trying some of the recipes.

This is the book that lit my curiousity about a plant-based diet. A month later, I "went vegan" and haven't regretted it a single minute.

My one warning about this is that the author believes that by deciding one has peace, one has it.
Only God gives peace.

I LOVE Tara's yoga approach. Her youtube videos and at-home yoga program videos are fantastic. Her yoga is great, and I look forward to trying her recipes!

I thought this was just ok. I like Tara Stiles but this book just didn't offer anything new for me. But if you're new to yoga, meditation and/or healthy eating, maybe you would feel differently. As far as the re pies go, I wouldn't even call them recipes. More like food suggestions. I would recommend one of Kris Carr's books over this one for some good beginner vegan recipes.
