Vision Map: Charting a Step-by-Step Course for Your Biggest Hopes and Dreams

Rate this book
Is there a gap between you and your dream? A few years back, Joël Malm had the idea to lead people on outdoor expeditions with a spiritual, God-centered focus. Following God’s lead, he created a vision map, started his organization, and made it happen. This book is a response to the question he often How do you do something like that? Whether you want to start a business, raise a family, run a marathon, plant a church, restore a relationship, or climb a mountain, you can take practical steps to see your vision come to be. Vision Map is not a formula for overnight success, but it is a template to start anyone on the path to envisioning a God-given dream. God often gives us a difficult problem to solve, and we just need a push in the right direction to find the answer.

Great book for planning the vision that God has given to you! This book was very organized in the vision map process and was effective in emphasizing prayer as the main focus in discovering God’s plan for our lives. I highly recommend if you are interested in following and mapping out the dream that God has implanted upon your life.

Great Read!

Such a great book and a simple concept we sometimes overthink..."just start". I am ready to just start on my God sized dream!

Do you have a dream or vision in your heart?

Joel Malm’s advice, “Just start”.

“Well, how do I start?” you might say.  Joel has that covered.

In his book “Vision Map: Charting a Step-By-Step Course For Your Biggest Hopes And Dreams”, Joel offers a template for you to not only start, but to move ahead and continue on the journey.  He shares his own stories, and stories of others, in a perfect hand-sized, easy-to-read book.  He highlights several things in red, and also highlights with pull quotes, famous quotes, and Bible verses.  This book could be read in a day, or picked up over and over again to continue reading.  I am on my second reading of it now.

“I believe God wants to make the dream in your heart a reality—even it it seems far-fetched.  You aren’t crazy.  You are a visionary.”

Joel’s desire is this:
“I hope this book helps you to navigate the waters of getting something started.  I’ll guide you through the process step-by-step.”

I can emphatically say Joel meets and exceeds his desire of this book.  If you have a dream or vision in your heart, I encourage you to read this book.  And then, just start.

Vision Map by Joel Malm

This book is a step-by-step guide to creating a map to help you achieve your goals, also known as creating a vision map. Malm really does a great job describing how to make that map. He also keeps it pretty interesting throughout the whole book even including red scribbles (underlines, circles, arrows) as if he has personally written in your book.

The introduction states “There are no overnight success stories” and I think that’s great to include right there in the beginning of the book. This book is a guide to making your plan, not a guide to fix all your problems before your morning cup of coffee tomorrow.

So for people like me, self-help books are usually too boring a read. This one is not so. Each chapter starts with a piece of Malm’s journey to success and his story truly is both interesting and inspiring. It follows with the portion explaining the part of the step that the chapter covers. Lastly, it ends with a verse or quote of inspiration.

This is a wonderful faith-based self-help book to create your vision map. It even includes a few samples in the back!

[Book 23]

This one I'm not going to give too much of a review because it's really short and I'm only reading it for class.

Some of his ideas are great, such as writing down your ideas on paper and having advisors. However, some of his ideas are nuts, such as just giving away all of the money he had saved up for his ministry.

Overall, interesting, but not great. 5.0 out of 10.

This book is gold. It’s simple, straight to the point, and makes perfect sense. If you are a visionary already following a path God laid before you, or just beginning, this book is for you. This book isn’t only about achieving the goal but the journey as well, and who you are becoming. This is an encouraging read.

This is a great book! If you are wanting just a book to read, this is not your book. This book helps you to connect what you think is your big idea to what God says is your big idea in His plan. This book is one that you will go back to several times while figuring out God’s big idea for you. I love this book! I actually used it for the first men’s book study at my church. Highly recommended!!!

DNF at Page 50. This is an encouraging guide for innovators, which isn't what I was looking for (at least right now). Definitely recommend for anyone trying to start a new and especially unique business, though.

Why I Choose this Book:

Goals and vision are a very important part of my life. I believe everyone on earth is here for a reason and God wants to use us in unique ways. This book looked like it would be helpful in helping me serve God better. It wasn't until just now that I saw Bob Goff, author of Love Does, endorsed the book. That alone would be enough to make me read it.

What I Thought about the Book:

Yay! This book is quite easy to gulp down, 96 pages of good information, told in a easy-going, easy-to-read way. I've read and listened to a lot of information about setting goals and working on the dream God has given you and living a purposeful life, so not much of the information was new. The information was presented in such a way though that made it feel new.

The book makes us feel like we're learning along with the author as he takes us through the process of what his vision mapping looked like, and explains what he did and didn't do and what he learned from it.

Conclusion:

There were a few sentences I didn't agree with 100% of the way, but they were all minor. A cool connection: I didn't realize it to the end of the book, but I'm pretty sure Joël and Jonathan (http://www.aidylewoh.blogspot.com/201...) are brothers.

Rating:

I'm happy to give Vision Map 4 stars (8 out of 10 stars) and recommend it to pretty much anyone who wants to fulfill the dreams God has given them.

A great little read on how to pursue your wildest hopes and dreams. Some of my favorite thoughts while reading were...

"I believe God wants to make the dream in your heart a reality- even if it seems far-fetched. You aren't crazy. You are a visionary."

"There's nothing more rewarding than watching God accomplish the goals He placed in your heart."

"Nothing kills a dream quicker than setting unrealistic goals"

"If God is ever in any role other than Chief Executive Officer of your vision, then you have a problem."

"If you are going to get where God is taking you, you will need to be dedicated to prayer."

"Impossible things happen every day"

"Never say no for someone else"

"A God idea always involves people"

"God is more concerned about who you become than what you do"

"God will bring the vision to pass. But He's more concerned about who you become in the process."

4-1/2 stars.

A short but powerful book about trusting in God and taking small steps each day towards following God's call on your life. I particularly like the concept of a vision map, where you outline all the steps necessary for reaching the goal, but also including (in red ink) specific asks for God. I wish he could had elaborated further on the vision map, since it's a small part of the book. Much of it is about lessons the author learned along his journey to development a missions-focused adventure travel organization. This book encourages you to dream big and partner with God -- rather than just maintain the status quo in your faith and daily routines. It's hard not to be motivated to get started after reading this book -- regardless of your age.

Vision Map
By Joel Malm
Charting a Step-by-Step Course for Your Biggest Hopes and Dreams

Vision Map weaves narrative along with lessons about dream the dreams, and establishing a path to get where we want to be, to do what we want to do.

It is a great book for anyone who has an idea about starting a business, or establishing a church, or a personal goal like running a marathon. Not only will it motivate, but it will provide direction, not by giving a direct instructions, but by leading along a path.

Malm provides practical steps to allow people to reach their vision, their purpose, their goal for life.

Leaders: buy this book by the case. Leaders are often asked for direction by someone with a grand idea. Every leader should hand this book to everyone looking for such advice. Vision Map gives the leader a way to resource someone in a clear, practical, and helpful way. It is accessible, so it shouldn't overwhelm someone who isn't used to reading leadership books. Well done.
