Drawing upon her experiences in Jamesport, the largest Old Order Amish community west of the Mississippi, longtime Missourian Charlotte Hubbard (a.k.a. Naomi King) writes of simpler times and a faith-based lifestyle in her new Seasons of the Heart series. Like her heroine, Miriam Lantz, Charlotte considers it her personal mission to feed people—to share hearth and home. Faith and family, farming and food preservation are hallmarks of her lifestyle, and the foundation of her earlier Angels of Mercy series. She’s a deacon, a dedicated church musician and choir member, and when she’s not writing, she loves to try new recipes, crochet, and sew. Charlotte now lives in Minnesota with her husband and their border collie.

2 stars:
A Willow Ridge Christmas: This one didn't hold my attention. It wasn't a slow story, but I didn't like the characters.

4 stars:
A Christmas on Ice Mountain: This was interesting story. I liked the characters. I also enjoyed the romance and the friendship in this story.

A Perfect Amish Christmas: I was surprised that I ended up liking this story. I liked Gideon from the start, but it took a while for me to warm up to Dottie. The romance was quick but still enjoyable.

In general it's weird practice to read a between-books or collection of novellas when you haven't read the proper series (I am very into reading things in order). So take that into consideration, in my review. This is also definitely not my genre. I will say the writing was pretty good, and the descriptions were colorful and nice to read. These were light and easy reads, and I liked the characters.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review from the publisher.

A huge fan of both holiday romance and inspirational romance, I jumped at the chance to read and review An Amish Christmas Quilt. I especially looked forward to the chance to re-visit the Willow Ridge community built by Charlotte Hubbard, whose previous books in this series I’ve enjoyed immensely. I also looked forward to reading the stories by Jennifer Beckstrand and Kelly Long, since I’ve never read anything by them before. I can easily report that I enjoyed this book so much, that I’ve already read it twice from cover to cover. I’ll be doing mini-reviews for each story below.

A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant by Charlotte Hubbard

Taking us back to the Willow Ridge community, Ms. Hubbard introduces us to young widow Mary Kaffman and her two children as they arrive in town. Nine months pregnant, and actively in labor, Mary and her kids are supposed to be staying with her Aunt Miriam but are lost. Fortunately they receive help from Seth Brenneman, a friend of their aunt, and one of the local carpenter/woodworkers in town.

Ms. Hubbard does a wonderful job developing all of the characters in this short story; while fans of her Willow Ridge series have already met Miriam, her husband Ben, and Seth Brenneman, it was nice to meet Mary and her two children, who are really her deceased husband’s children from his first wife. The attraction and romance between Mary and Seth develops over several months and is sweet and believable. The focus of the story being on family, love and keeping the birth of Christ as the focus of the holiday season was also well done. I also enjoyed getting to catch up with some of the remaining residents of Willow Ridge.

While this is an installment in an established series, this short story can be enjoyed on its own and would be a good introduction to Ms. Hubbard’s style of writing if you have not read her before.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

A Perfect Amish Christmas by Jennifer Beckstrand

A grandmother determined to act as a matchmaker and a Christmas Eve snow storm bring together Dottie Schrock, a young woman determined to give her mother the “perfect” Christmas, and Gideon “Gid” Stutzman, a young man who helps to remind her of the true reason for the holiday season.

Ms. Beckstrand did a wonderful job introducing her characters and developing their romance within the short story. I enjoyed Dottie and “Gid’s” lively conversational style and their teasing banter. I also enjoyed getting to know Gid’s grandparents, Anna and Felty Helmuth, whose conversation is just as lively as their younger counterparts.

Reminding us that a “perfect” holiday celebration is nice but not the reason for the season, Ms. Beckstrand focused on family, love and the birth of Christ while developing the romance between Dottie and Gid. Now that I’ve been introduced to Ms. Beckstrand’s The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series through this story, I plan to get the rest of the books and keep an eye out for what she has coming next. Hopefully we will get to see more of Dottie and Gid in the future.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

A Christmas On Ice Mountain by Kelly Long

A little bit shorter than the other two stories in this holiday anthology, Kelly Long’s A Christmas on Ice Mountain focuses more on forgiveness as a theme. An Amish take on the Hatfield and McCoy saga, Ms. Beckstrand introduces us to John Beider and Luke Lapp, two young men who are best friends at the start of her story. Friends who have a falling out over an antique shotgun and have let their anger become a long standing feud.

When Matthew Beider and Laurel Lapp fall in love they know their fathers will not be happy. Determined to keep their romance a secret, they find themselves in a compromising position during a winter storm that leads to a “shotgun” style wedding. Both young and in love, neither Matthew or Laurel had thought about the practical issues of their future – where they would live – which family they would spend the holidays with or if they could even get their parents to forgive each other and become friends.

Showcasing that God can always find a solution to your problems if you let him. Ms. Long draws both fathers together through the love of their children. While the Amish community in Ms. Long’s story is more secluded than the communities in the other two short stories, and a little more old fashioned and German in nature, I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and look forward to reading more of Ms. Long’s work.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

*****Overall I really enjoyed this anthology and can’t wait to read more of these author’s individual work.

Title: AN AMISH CHRISTMAS QUILT
Authors: Charlotte Hubbard, Kelly Long, and Jennifer Beckstrand
Publisher: Kensington Books
November 2014
ISBN:
Genre: Amish Christmas novellas

A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant by Charlotte Hubbard

Seth Brenneman didn’t expect his holiday would include rescuing pregnant young Mary Kauffman and her two children….or having unexpected feelings for the still-grieving widow. But when they must play the leads in an impromptu live Nativity pageant to help his Amish community, will their roles reveal their hearts—and work a miracle for a lifetime?

My thoughts: This was a cute novella, kind of an Amish play on the birth of Jesus—even the baby has the name Emmanuel, which made me want to sing Christmas carols. I enjoyed reconnecting with some of Ms. Hubbard’s previous characters and the fledgling romance between Seth and Mary. 4 stars.

A Christmas on Ice Mountain by Kelly Long

Matthew Beider and Laurel Lapp’s secret wish to marry is a gift their feuding fathers definitely won’t accept. Can rediscovering the joys and friendships of Christmas past finally turn their families’ futures bright?

My thoughts: Wow. Kelly Long was one of my favorite Amish authors, but this one took the sensuality too far. The story about John and Luke was great and I loved the history and the resolution there, but Matthew and Laurel’s romance went into a bit too much detail in some places. Not up to Ms. Long’s usual standards for sure, but still well written. 4 stars.

A Perfect Amish Christmas by Jennifer Beckstrand

Anna Helmuth knows that Dottie Schrock is the perfect girl for her grandson Gideon. Dottie is an excellent quilter and baker and she’s having a party. There’s just one complication—Gideon is not invited. Dottie has her reasons, but Anna trusts that the spirit of Christmas—and true love—will change her mind, and her future…

My thoughts: Jennifer Beckstrand is a new author to me. I read one of her books this past month, but they intrigue me enough so I probably will look for earlier ones. I enjoyed getting to know Gid and Dottie and revisiting Ana and Felti. This was the best story of the book. So cute. Dottie is a bit high maintenance, but she has her reasons for wanting everything perfect. I love Gid’s sense of humor. Great story.

Over all this was a good Amish novella collection. I love that more publishers are doing them. I enjoyed each of the stories – even around Valentine’s Day, when I read them. The mention of special holiday treats made me think of the ones my own Amish grandparents and Mom made for Christmas every year. 5 stars

If you haven’t read AN AMISH CHRISTMAS QUILT you’ll want to pick up a copy. Great read.

A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant--by Charlotte Hubbard

But when they must play the leads in an impromptu live Nativity pageant to help his Amish community, will their roles reveal their hearts--and work a miracle for a lifetime?
My Review: Charlotte Hubbard has recreated the perfect Nativity scene with Mary and Seth and her two children. How can their hearts help but turn warm with love at the very thought and act of recreating the very first Christmas night? This is a precious novella full of love, forgiveness and plenty of surprises. 5 Stars

A Christmas on Ice Mountain--by Kelly Long
Matthew Beider and Laurel Lapp's secret wish to marry is a gift their feuding fathers definitely won't accept. Can rediscovering the joys and friendships of Christmas past finally turn their families' futures bright?
My Review: This is an Amish version of the Hatfields and McCoys....families or fathers at least feuding and no one even knows the reason for the feud. When their children, Matthew and Laurel, fall in love and seek permission from the bishop to be wed, what will happen? Will the families work things out? A blizzard and a trip to Ice Mountain just might push things along in their natural way. This novella offers hope to those who think love and forgiveness are not possible. 5 Stars

A Perfect Amish Christmas--by Jennifer Beckstrand
Anna Helmuth knows that Dottie Schrock is the perfect girl for her grandson Gideon. Dottie is an excellent quilter and baker and she's having a party. There's just one complication---Gideon is not invited. Dottie has her reasons, but Anna trusts that the spirit of Christmas---and true love---=will change her mind, and her future....
MY REVIEW: Anna Helmuth's favorite activity is matchmaking. She always involves her sweet husband in her matchmaking whether he likes it or not. This Christmas, she has her grandson, Gideon, and Dottie Schrock in mind to be matched. Dottie is planning the perfect Christmas party for her mamm who was very sick with cancer in the previous years and now in remission and in need of the perfect celebration, according to Dottie. But she does not want Gideon to be a part of the wondrous party as she remembers him as a pesky troublemaking teenager. A snowstorm just might help Anna's matchmaking efforts along in this sweet snowfilled novella. 5 Stars

Three Amish novellas with a quilt included in each of the stories. Loved the way the true meaning of the Christmas spirit was shinning through in each of these stories.
All of these authors I have read previous stories by and felt like I was experiencing a home coming with the people that I have come to love and cherish.
The first is A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant By Charlotte Hubbard, and we are back with old friends here. Mary is traveling with her stepchildren and is about to have a baby. Can’t imagine being in labor, and driving a buggy into the rather unknown. She is rescued a carpenter named Seth. I know, his name is not Joseph, but by the time we finish the story, there is a lot more symbolism.
The second story A Christmas on Ice Mountain by Kelly Long. Brought home the power of forgiveness, and the power of love.
Two men previously the best of friends, now not speaking for a number of years, and then their children fall in love. Made me think of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, only this is an Amish community. What happens makes you feel the love Christmas that comes upon these families. Can there be forgiveness after all these years?
The third and final story A Perfect Christmas by Jennifer Beckstrand, brought me back with one of my favorite fictional couples, our famous match making Grandparents Anna and Felty Helmuth. Of course, they are at it again.
This is Grandson Gideon’s turn, and lets hope this one works out like the others. Anna has found whom she feels is the perfect match for him, Dottie Schrock. One never knows who is going to need the most help seeing what is in front of their eyes, but this is all in God’s timing. Of course Anna has been helping with a quilt for Dottie’s Mom, and it sure comes in handy.
Three really great Christmas reads that will warm your heart and fill your mind during this Holy Season.

I received this book through Net Galley and Kensington Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

I recently started reading Charlotte Hubbard novels and upon reading my first one, Summer of Secrets, I fell in love with her characters, I enjoy her style of writing and her character building and the way she brings them to life thru the use of words.
Jennifer Beckstrand has been a favorite author of mine for several years now, I love her Huckleberry Hill series, I was sadden back in 2016 when I thought she had finished that series however you can imagine my elation when I found out she had continued that series! So I'm trying to catch up with her characters, Anna and Felty Helmuth and their grand children.
Kelly Long is new to me, her story is good too even though I've not read any of her other works. I may I'm the future read more of her writings.
I'm sure you will enjoy this book as much as I have.

This review is specifically for the third story in this Amish fiction collection, 'A Perfect Amish Christmas' by Jennifer Beckstrand.

This is a wonderful Amish holiday story full of characters overcoming personal challenges, good humor, and holiday cheer. I loved learning more about the Christmas traditions of the Amish--simple and heartfelt.

The love story between Gideon and Dottie is sweet and authentic. The grandparents in this story, Anna and Felty Helmuth, are the same hilarious couple from another of this author's books I read earlier this autumn, 'Huckleberry Hill'. The antics of these two octogenarians are so entertaining and will keep you in stitches as you read this short story.

I borrowed this story collection from our local public library.

Three tales presented, by three different authors, of young love in an Amish community. Each story presented a budding romance between a young couple (early 20s) and a handmade quilt. And while they were nice, they were just a little too nice (bland) for my taste. And, I felt, they didn’t really tell much about the Amish other than they ride around in buggies or sleds and occasionally speak German. All in all, I won’t be reading any other books by the authors, but do recommend them for someone mildly interested in the Amish and Christian literature.

Christmas stories

This was just what the doctor ordered for preparing for Christmas - three stories of love and hope. I'm a bit envious of the Amish lifestyle described in the stories - that my life might be more simple!

Love the Amish. Getting a look at their language, customs, and oftentimes trials make for a good read. Different than my usual psychology/murder mysteries.

I enjoyed this collection of 3 Amish Christmas novellas, and give the collection 3.5 stars.
A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant (3 stars)
~I've been enjoying reading the Willow Ridge series this year, and was pleased to note that Micah's (from the first novel in the series) little brother Seth would get his turn in the spotlight. I liked the way he and Mary interacted, and the way they grew to be friends before any spark of attraction was acted upon.
A Christmas on Ice Mountain (2.5 stars)
~From the prologue, I figured out what had happened between Luke and John to cause the rift between their families, and knowing what had happened made the rest of the story where they were so angry at each other just frustrating for me, knowing that it could have been easily resolved. I thought the romance between Laurel and Matthew was a bit too steamy, though it wasn't enough for me to stop reading, and I wondered at the use of a Christmas tree in an Amish novel. It is my understanding that no Amish districts would allow for something so 'worldly' as a Christmas tree, but perhaps the district on Ice Mountain was particularly progressive? That said, I did enjoy that the majority of the characters were determined to trust in God no matter what.
A Perfect Amish Christmas (4 stars)
~I really enjoyed this one. Gid was sometimes a little too straightforward and lacked tact (bull in a china shoppe, anyone?), and Dottie needed to learn to let go of her vision of 'perfect' and concentrate on what truly mattered. But, when they each got out of their own ways, Gid and Dottie really shone as a couple. I especially loved how they ministered to Lou, and how they were able to make the absolute best of an unfortunate circumstance on Christmas Eve, relying on their remembrance of why we even celebrate Christmas in the first place. I fully admit to getting a wee bit teary when Gid quoted the Christmas story from Luke.

The stories were very good. The only thing I did not like was the detail that was put into the honeymoon scene in Kelly Long's story. I expect that in regular fiction but not Christian fiction.

All in all, I would say that I enjoyed An Amish Christmas Quilt but, I don't feel like I got very much out of the experience except for a few rides in a buggy and the occasional German. Oh, and the quilting - each of these stories has a quilt inside of them which is significant to the relationships which are being formed. I did like envisioning the quilts and understanding the significance which each of them held within their specific story.

WHAT could be better than three stories in one by three AMAZING Authors!

The answer is NOTHING!

Three terrific authors, three fantastic stories!

I have not read all of the stories in Charlotte Hubbard/Naomi King’s Amish series but this story makes me want to!

WOW!

GREAT writing, interesting characters, intriguing story!

What else could you ask for…

Oh yeah, ROMANCE!

I have to admit, I read some not so Christian romances years and years ago and I never would have expected to be able to truly get caught up in the romance of a book that is so very straight-laced (and if anyone fits that category, it’s the Amish)

But I’m thrilled to discover how wrong I was!

In fact, the best thing about these wonderful stories is that you get to focus entirely on the romantic aspects without getting caught up in all the worldly nonsense.

Charlotte Hubbard does this really well but she also brings in aspects that those of us who are NOT Amish deal with every day – such as step-parents and what they deal with, how a woman who has just lost her husband gets along, and the way a man can get wrapped up in a situation without even fully realizing what he had gotten into.

This will actually be the first story of Kelly Long’s that I’ve ever read.

Who knew the Amish could feud?

Again, Kelly introduces us to situations that are distinctly Amish but that we as English can associate with too!

Kelly pulls us right into the story about two young people in love. It’s not quite Romeo and Juliet because the Amish would never go to such lengths but the story is much the same – feuding fathers, forbidden love, sneaking about – which is actually how most communities go about courting anyway, and the like.

It’s not a story you’ll want to miss and I’m not about to spoil it for you. It’s actually really tricky to review because it’s so easy to go on about how great it is but if I get too much into that, I’m going to end up giving something away and I won’t do that. It’s too good to ruin it for you!

But I will say this, it’s WELL-WORTH reading!

And don’t miss Kelly’s next book: The Amish Bride of Ice Mountain!

Yes, I’ve saved the best (in my own personal opinion) for last…

Jennifer Beckstrand returns once again to Bonduel, Wisconsin, entertaining us with her colorful characters and the ridiculous things they get into!

No one writes about the Amish the way Jennifer does. No other stories makes me laugh out loud the way hers do and not one other book…or family… makes me wish more that I were actually Amish.

Anna and Felty are at it again…

We actually get a look at Anna and Felty’s daughter in this one and her affection for her wild and wacky parents is just as deep as you always imagined it would be.

And it’s not at all a surprise that Gideon’s father doesn’t quite understand his wife’s slightly odd parents and their ideas.

I always say the one I’ve just read is my new favorite and I hold steady to that… except to make one small amendment: Whichever book of Jennifer Beckstrand’s that I am reading at the moment is my absolute favorite! They’re just that good!

I can hardly wait for the next one!

An Amish Christmas Quilt features three of my favorite authors... let's take these three stories in order, shall we?

Charlotte Hubbard: A Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant

This story begins with Mary Kauffman and her two stepchildren arriving in Willow Ridge, looking for her “Aunt Miriam”; but before they find her, Mary goes into labor!

Mary is another wonderful character created by the amazing Charlotte Hubbard. When Seth Brenneman gets a visit from a strange dog, who compels Seth to follow him, he finds Mary and the children.

I love how Charlotte continues to give her readers more stories from the wonderful series we love. She brings in aspects that those of us who are NOT Amish deal with every day – such as step-parenting and how a woman who has just lost her husband faces the future, and the way a man can get wrapped up in a situation without even fully realizing what he had gotten into.

All the other wonderful characters we love are here… and ready to welcome Mary and the children to their community. Charlotte does an awesome job creating – and maintaining – interesting, realistic characters.

Honestly, they are so interesting; most of us would just love to visit them. Story after story, the characters grow and develop, adding life, love, faith and hope to each story.

Charlotte’s books promote love, faith, hope and family – and this novella continues the tradition. Of course, there’s a wonderful Christmas message, too.

Kelly Long: A Christmas on Ice Mountain

Kelly pulls us right into the story about two young people in love. It’s not quite Romeo and Juliet because the Amish would never go to such lengths but the story is much the same – feuding fathers, forbidden love, sneaking about – which is actually how most communities go about courting anyway, and the like.

Jennifer Beckstrand: A Perfect Amish Christmas

Being a perfectionist makes it easy for me to identify with Dottie.

It also makes it easy for me to say that Dottie needs to back off — and let others help more, even if she doesn’t think they can do things as well as she can. This is especially true when she hurts the feelings of others around her, like her younger sister Eva, who only wants to be helpful. Eva most likely really needs to learn how to do things for herself, if Dottie will only give her a chance.

However, it’s just as easy to talk about how wonderful Dottie acted when she and Gid visit a friend, who needs help. She decides helping him is important and she does all she can to make him a delicious meal and do some much-needed cleaning for him.

OK, let me just say this novella is every bit as good as the full length novels in the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series!
