The Colleagues

Rate this book
A new psychological thriller from the author of the number one bestseller, The Doctor's Wife

How far would you go to keep a secret at work? Would you kill for it?
I used to enjoy my job. I was good at it and felt fulfilled. I also used to enjoy spending time with the people I worked with. They say you spend more time with your work colleagues than you do with your family members, but that was fine by me because I made two very good friends at the office. I also allowed myself to get a little too close to my boss, but I soon realised that was a mistake.

Unfortunately, it was too late by then, and as my personal and professional lives quickly blurred into one, that was when everything changed.

My workplace became the scene for plotting, revenge and murder, but none of us were cut out for things like that. We were just three colleagues who became friends before things went too far. But there was no going back from what we did. We could only hope that we would get away with it. But not all of us would.

A gripping, page-turning psychological thriller from the author of The Couple's Revenge, The Passenger and the number one bestseller, The Doctor's Wife

“I’m sure you can manage it, Edwin. You’ve had plenty of practice at that in your life. You’re the master of hurting people and moving on.”
― Daniel Hurst, The Colleagues

3.5 stars.

The colleagues is a gripping and extremely dark corporate thriller.

I have been getting into thrillers lately that take place at offices. This is the third one I’ve read this month and probably the best one.

The plot revolves around three women and their names are Liz and Beverly and Natasha.

They have murdered their former boss.

This is not a spoiler at all. You kind of learn it in the first few pages.

The three women had all been abused by their former boss Edwin in different ways. Edwin, I should mention is a prick. 10 stars, 1 million stars to the author for how evil they made this guy.

Still, vigilante justice is not OK. That is what the three of them engaged in and fast forward a year and they’re all terrified of being found out and experiencing other bitter emotions about what they did.

The colleagues is about power. Undoubtedly there are bosses like Edwin out there and there’s probably a lot of them.

It is about the corporate ladder, and the feeling of powerlessness that can often happen to people who just want a good and secure job, just want to climb the corporate ladder in respectable ways, and the book is about what happens when that particular dream is shattered .

Trigger warnings — rape, abuse, suicide and murder.

The colleagues is so readable that I was hooked from about page 5. It is one of the most readable thrillers that I’ve read this year and I can honestly recommend it in a sense even though I really can’t give it a five.

The reason I can’t give it a five has to do with something that I’m going to need to use spoilers with. It has to do with.

SPOILERS

The power dynamic among the women. I really was kind of disappointed in the ending. Besides, not finding it believable, something that I could get over, it was really hard for me to buy Liz, as having gone crazy in jail and become a killer. Nor can I really buy that Beverly would ever betray her.

It’s really hard sometimes when you form attachments to the characters, and they behave in ways that you, the reader don’t find believable at all.

I know with thrillers and mysteries and domestic dramas , and really just about every genre, a shocking ending sometimes goes a long way. But I was bothered by it, and I really didn’t believe that Liz could get out of jail, and in a quick few hours completely frame, her former best friend.

That ending had another affect, and that was to take away any likability of either Liz or Beverly, leaving the reader with very few characters to root, for, except, of course, for Natasha, who committed suicide, so I felt this really was a well written, and utterly fascinating book that just went off the beaten path a bit in ways I didn’t really connect with

That being said, I absolutely would recommend this. What the book also does so successfully is show the other gloominess, the soulless sterility of the corporate environment. I just thought this was so well written, and had it not been for the reshuffling of the women and their characters, I probably be rating this a five because I stayed up half the night to finish it, and it was really really well written book.

My first Daniel Hurst book of 2025!

Since Daniel Hurst pens thrillers faster than the speed of light, this Daniel Hurst thriller will be one of many Daniel Hurst titles appearing on my GR Booklist in 2025.

Nobody bats 100%.

Not even Daniel Hurst.

Sadly, the first 70% unfolded from multiple timelines and was dizzying and repetitious.

Fortunately, Daniel Hurst did not disappoint and the last few chapters significantly elevated my star rating.

Even with that "Needs Improvement" beginning, the book's final chapters confirm that talented author Daniel Hurst has mastered the art and science of penning stellar revenge thrillers.

I listened to the audiobook read by Helen Phillips.

The narration was good but not great.

My performance review on "The Colleagues":
3.5 stars, rounded up.

Funny I was only thinking there hasn’t been a Dan Hurst book for a few weeks and as if by magic one appears 🤗
I may be wrong but don’t remember a book from the author that features a work based story and a situation that arises between colleagues, while it follows the format we love of events taking people by shock and the aftermath this book has more of a history of events surrounding where we join the story at the present day
I enjoyed it, how can you not and felt there was a different depth to the story and characters, you will see what mean when read it, it was an interesting ( and at times horrific ) story with a more than clever ending
Its trademark Daniel Hurst but different if makes any sense but really the most important thing is it is as usual a brilliant read

Daniel Hurst is the KING OF REVENGE! His latest book just came out, The Colleagues. It was gripping from the very first page and it kept me up reading late into the night not wanting to put it down. I just don’t know how Daniel gets better with each new book but he does. If you’re in a book slump, he’ll pull you out and get you hooked on ALL his books. I’ve read 26 of his 37 books and plan to devour them all! This one is on Amazon for only $1.25 US. How can one go wrong?

I am among the first to praise author Daniel Hurst when he deserves it, as he usually does. But I will also be the first to criticize him when he deserves it, as he unfortunately does in this case.

In The Colleagues, the author returns to his familiar themes of betrayal and revenge. Liz, Bev and Natasha are three attractive single women who work for the same company. Their boss Edwin is charming and handsome. He is also a serial womanizer and a tax cheat. After taking sexual advantage of his female employees, he buys their silence with money and non-disclosure agreements before terminating them from his company.

Liz, Bev and Natasha have all been victimized by Edwin and hate him enough to kill him. They devise what they are convinced is a foolproof plan to commit the perfect murder, but it requires Edwin to cooperate in a way that is simply implausible.

Liz and Bev may have been merely careless by exchanging incriminating text messages, but in two key scenes involving Edwin’s son and an investigator he hired, Liz in particular, despite her intelligence, behaved not only naively but stupidly.

Between Edwin and Liz I was shaking my head in frustration and disappointment at the author for writing his characters so poorly.

There is yet another betrayal and revenge that is supposed to provide the book with a shocking ending, but it was also so implausible it had me shaking my head again. I won’t list the implausibilities so as not to ruin the story for you. The author will do that for you himself.

But among so many other absurdities, ask yourself whose fingerprints were not on that knife in the final chapter and who had no motive whatsoever to commit that crime.

I've never read a book by Daniel Hurst before, but I really enjoyed this fast-paced revenge thriller. As the story opens, we discover that three former female colleagues have committed a crime and are dealing with the aftermath. The book then moves into alternating chapters of past and present, and we slowly learn how and why the crime was committed, and how the feelings of guilt, paranoia and fear affect each woman, testing their friendship and loyalties. Does someone know their secret? Will they be able to stick to their stories to avoid getting caught? This is a dark, twisty story with short chapters, making for a quick and addictive read.

Ugh, I'm super bummed. Like really, really bummed. I was excited to see a new book come out when I wasn't expecting it!

The timelines back and forth got to be a little bit confusing at times. I wish there were dates to go along with it. That was the least of my worries though.

My biggest issue was that from the reviews I saw on Facebook and whatnot all said there was a shocking twist. I got to the epilogue and I still was confused on what the big twist was. I guess I just wasn't shocked by it.

I was expecting like maybe Liz being the one who murdered Natasha because she felt that she was going to blow their cover, or that she would do something to Bev early on to keep her quiet. Sigh. I really wanted to like this one.

I really don’t understand all of the good ratings for this one. The author seems to think women are obsessed with: 1) marriage 2) children and 3) how terrible and out of touch young people are.

Misogynistic (all the women in the office screw the boss)!

Silly (just roll a body in a RUG and toss it in a canal a block from your house; apparently it will not bloat and surface EVER)!

Confounding (confess to murder to someone who obviously has motive to record your dumb ass)!

Skip this one, for reals.

The Colleagues is another masterpiece written by Daniel Hurst. Manipulation, abuse and murder surrounds this trio of friends by their boss. It makes you question your work relationships from co-workers on up to your superiors. I highly recommend this amazing thriller.

Oh man, this was just…no.

Story was meh. The twist did not hit, literally no shock value.

The thing I found most annoying about the book was the author’s fascination with the word “whilst”. Like holy shit, he wrote this novel whilst making it a goal to add the word “whilst” to damn near every page. 🙄

I’ve read two books from Hurst and both were weak.

WORK RULE NUMBER 1 - TRUST NO ONE

Another fantastic fast paced thriller by Daniel Hurst. He really knows how to catch your attention and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Liz and her two colleagues Bev and Natasha have a great friendship… well they THOUGHT. They are all excited about meeting up for a drink one night when Natasha doesn’t show up, where is she? The girls wonder if something has happened to her as she has recently not been herself and been very quiet.

Liz ends up getting deeply involved with her Ex boss, Edwin, but he isn’t exactly as he seems.. it takes a turn for the worst and the 3 colleagues are now hating on Edwin for what he has done and Liz wants revenge.

This book is compelling and extremely addicting as normal it’s hard not to finish Daniel Hurst’s books in one sitting as he draws you in, the twists in this book is incredible and the ending was a SHOCK!

Now not to condone murder, even for a person as displaceable as Edwin, but my goodness, if you’re going to go through the trouble of planning a murder, at least be smart about not getting yourself caught! And it definitely felt like these characters were begging to get caught.
Hence why I couldn’t get over the dumb mistakes Liz and her accomplices kept making. From Bev's repeated sending of incriminating texts, to Liz being naive enough to confess almost everything to the murdered victim’s son without being the least bit suspicious that he could’ve been possibly recording them.

Something baffled me about the whole stolen phone situation as well. Let’s overlook for a moment how idiotic it was for Liz to trust the very PI investigating them inside her home. If she had a smartphone — which I would assume she would since she was a businesswoman with considerable income — why wouldn’t she just log in from a computer to find her stolen phone’s location? She also could have remotely deleted its contents if she had been worried about any digital evidence.

Aside from being frustrating at times, this novel did keep me engaged and I especially appreciated its use of multiple timelines. Though readers learn from the book’s start how this seedy tale of workplace drama and revenge ultimately turns out, the novel still retains its suspense by revealing how the plot takes such a drastic turn. Plus it plays with the question of whether or not Liz and her coworkers were truly justified in committing premeditated murder that fateful night. On that note, none of the characters are very likable and you may end up hoping that almost every one of them gets their comeuppance. I know I certainly did.

Not my favorite. There was just one bad decision after another by pretty much everyone. If you love revenge plots at all costs then you’ll enjoy this book.

Still one of my favorite authors, this one just wasn’t for me.

Do you want to read about craziness? Well pick up this book by Daniel Hurst and follow the lives of three friends who work in the same company. And then learn what happens when you have a boss who thinks he can get away with anything.

Revenge is sweet they say....but you havent seen revenge until you read this book, because the sweetness keeps piling on and on. I think I am hooked on this author especially since the mystery begins with his prologues.....if that doesnt drag you into his books, then I dont know what will.

A page turner for sure. You wont be disappointed. Now on to his next book!

I was bored beyond bored. The characters were so lame and helpless. The story D R A G G E D and was just dumb in general. I did audio and the narrators voice was excellent, so that helped round my rating up to 3 stars.
Thriller friends, I would definitely pass on this one. Hurst is awesome, but this book was not.

The Colleagues by Daniel Hurst ⭐️
(Actually… more like a bold 0 if we could!)

Whew. Where do I even start?
This was supposed to be a psychological thriller, but it ended up being a masterclass in frustration. I’ve read and enjoyed Daniel Hurst before, so I went in expecting twists, tension, and tight storytelling. What I got instead? A plot so ridiculous it had me asking, “Is this satire?”

📵 Let’s Talk About the Logic (or lack thereof):

We’re talking about characters who commit murder and then casually text each other about it like they’re coordinating brunch.
Homegirls—- have yall heard of a search warrant?!
The lack of common sense made it impossible to suspend disbelief. And once the plot leaned all the way into “this would never happen in real life” territory, I had no choice but to tap out.

😤 Final Verdict:
• Did I finish? Nope.
• Did I try? Yes, I really did.
• Would I recommend it? Not even to my worst enemy.
• Biggest disappointment? The fact that I know Hurst can write better than this.

Listen, not every book’s gonna be a hit, and that’s okay—but this one felt like a rushed draft that never got the edits it deserved. As for me and my bookshelf? We’re moving on.

Well...where do I begin with this one? Daniel Hurst is one of my favourite authors. I pre-order everything he publishes and I don't even read the description because I know whatever the story, I'm going to be entertained and thrilled. Largely, I'm never disappointed. That is, until now.

What happened here? This is so far removed from the Daniel Hurst I know and love. Where is the fast paced plot? The thrill ride guaranteed to keep us entertained? This one was so slow in places it was like wading through quick sand. And the characters were all, and I do mean all of them, were so unlikeable it was difficult to find any sympathy for them.

Liz, Bev and Natasha were colleagues but remained friends even after the termination of each of their employment with the company for which they worked. But each of them came away with the same tale of woe. Their boss Edwin Van Dekker had either propositioned them or sexually assaulted them, thus resulting in the termination of their employment with a hefty payout and a NDA signed, sealed and delivered.

But this was not enough for the three women. They wanted him to pay for what he did to them. To pay the ultimate price...with his life. And so that's what they set out to do. But how do they do it? And how do they now get away with it?

Regardless of the positions they now find themselves in, Liz and Bev continue to make stupid mistakes over and over. Natasha never has the chance, having decided she can't live with what they've done. But is that what really happened? Or did one of the women silence her before she could go to the police and confess?

But the stupid mistakes didn't end there. They went right through to the end (almost). From incriminating texts to the lost phone to confessing to the boss' son without being the least bit suspicious?

The ending was kind of OK but not the shocking twist that was tagged as having and nothing really earth shattering either. In fact, it was an ending I thought the author would naturally come up with as is his style. But the rest of the book was something of a disappointment. I prefer his domestic thrillers and his other psychological ones.

However, I know that even our favourite authors can publish the odd book or two we aren't endeared to and up until now that had never been the case with Hurst. I will continue to auto-buy and pre-order his books because I know what great things he is capable of. It's just this one wasn't for me.

THIS REVIEW INCLUDES SPOILERS!

This thriller was amazing and suspenseful from start to finish. I loved this book because my heart started beating crazily towards the end. However, I thought it was a little unfair Liz was in prison only for fifteen years for killing her boss. She should have stayed there much longer after brainwashing her friends into helping her kill him. I know her boss assaulted her friend and many other women, but that does not mean he necessarily deserved to die. He should have gone to prison for his heinous crimes like many other criminals do. He should not have been murdered.

Her friend told the police where his body truly was because Liz lied about that at the police station. I am glad her friend turned her in for the crime she committed even though she was there too, but only because Liz manipulated her and Natasha, her other friend, into killing their boss. Poor Natasha committed suicide, overdosing herself from the pressure Liz put on her. For me, the only true villains in this book were Liz and her boss.

Overall, I loved this book so much and I decided to give it a five-star rating. This author can write some fabulous thrillers, I can tell you that. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a great thriller, this one is for you.

Another cracker, a really gripping read.

I never wonder if I am going to like one of Daniel Hurst’s books as I have read all of them!

This one focuses on three ladies who have all suffered at the hands of a colleague and they decide to do something about it! Honestly this book takes you on such a ride you cannot fail to enjoy it.

Got a real god kicker at the end too!

Happy Reading.
