A retired detective, a haunted mine, and a mystery
When Diana retired from her detective duties, she firmly believed her time spent solving mysteries was over.
She loved to cook, and starting her own B&B seemed like a seamless step into a far more fun and cozier lifestyle.
Did she sometimes miss the adrenaline rush of solving a case? Sure. But those days are behind her now.
That was until mysterious footprints appeared in the middle of the hall.
Though her guests were intrigued by stories about the legend of a ghost that haunted the old mine nearby, she had dismissed them as just stories.
With strange occurrences starting around the house, she was finding that harder and harder to believe, and her sleuthing hat was well and truly back on.
Was she secretly excited to be back in the game? That’s beside the point.
The real question Will she be able to solve The Mystery at Bakers Inn?
This is a cute mystery in a cozy setting. I struggled a little with the “head hopping” (not sure how I got from one POV to another), and I would have liked a little more sensory immersion with the food scenes, but overall, this is a good cozy mystery in a B&B setting.
I didn't know what to expect when buying this book, but it captured my curiosity. I read it quickly and never guessed what would happen at the end. I'm not telling, but I will say that your mouth will water throughout the book while reading about all the delicious meals Diana prepares for her B&B guests. This is a delightful story that I highly recommend.
Nicole Simon’s The Mystery at Bakers Inn has a cozy premise—a retired detective running a bed and breakfast amid whispers of a haunted mine—but it falls flat in execution. Despite being called a seasoned sleuth, Diana often misses obvious clues and reacts with unwarranted panic, making it hard to believe in her expertise.
Supporting characters are equally underwhelming, . The plot grows increasingly implausible,
The many baking scenes clash with the mystery’s pacing, with Diana preparing elaborate meals with unrealistic ease. Ultimately, the book can’t decide whether it’s a mystery or a baking story, and it succeeds at neither. A promising setup that ends up disappointing.
