This is the second of the Pamela Prendergast Mysteries. When a tree falls through the roof of Maisie Macdonald’s conservatory, Pamela is at a loss to know where to hold her recently formed art class. A call from a stranger, Emma Blackford, solves the problem. Emma is keen that her daughter Dilly should join the class, and offers the use of her garden office for the class sessions. But it isn’t long before Pamela begins to wonder whether she should have been so quick to accept the offer. She suspects an intruder is lurking in the shrubbery outside the office on one of the dark November evenings, and later her friend is attacked, a body is found and the police get involved. Pamela finds that having DCI Mal Mitchell as a neighbour is also a mixed blessing.
Cecilia Peartree is the mystery writing pen name of a former database manager who lives in Edinburgh. She is a history graduate and as well as writing, she uses her spare time to research family history, serve on a local committee and look after cats. In real life, Cecilia has two sons, one a computer consultant and one a writer, film-maker and social media specialist. Incidentally, there are now 27 books in the Pitkirtly Mystery series, and 6 in the Adventurous Quest series, but who's counting? (Apart from me, of course) Recently published work includes six historical novels (with more in progress) and 3 mysteries in a new series, as well as some random odds and ends.
I was glad to see this second in the new Pamela Prendergast series, with all the charm of her other books. Pamela is trying to run an art course but is cursed in her venues, yielding to falling trees and dead bodies as she tries to teach her students. As is often the case in Peartree’s books, the real world intrudes into the kind of muddled existence many of us live in, but all is well in the end and our circle of Pamela’s acquaintance is nicely expanded, too.
My first reading of a Pamela Prendergast story. Have just realised I am reading the stories back to front but don’t mind that. Looking forward to the first one!
