He couldn't save his wife...but he will save Alyssa

When Noah Preston entered witness protection, his only concern was for his daughter. He couldn't save her mother, but he would save Alyssa--no matter what. Now, three years later, he's done his best to make their new lives work. But he can't let go of the fear--and the guilt--that haunts him. And he can't let Alyssa out of his sight.

Noah's convinced that loneliness is part of his penance. So when Billie Landon stumbles into his bike shop, he's determined to keep his distance. He can't risk giving in to his attraction to her. Even though she could be exactly what he and his child really need.

Saving Alyssa (A Child To Love)***** by Loree Lough

Noah Preston owns and operates a bike repair shop in Ellicott City. He and his 8 year old daughter Alyssa have living quarters upstairs over the bike shop, which Noah is very thankful for. Since his wife Jillian Judson was murdered three years ago, Noah Preston (formally Nate Judson) along with his daughter Alyssa, (then 5 year old Melissa) entered the Witness Protection Program.

Nate Judson had been a successful lawyer but had turned state's evidence, testifying against Senator O'Malley. In an attempt to stop Nate's testifying, O'Malley had killed Nate's wife, Jillian and tried to kidnap Melissa. After the trial, as O'Malley was being lead out of the court room in hand cuffs, he threatens to find and kill Nate no matter where the Witness Protection Program sends him.

It has been three years since that threat but Noah cannot stop the fear that somehow O'Malley will find him and kill both he and Alyssa. So, Noah lives everyday in fear and regret, not trusting strangers and has become somewhat reclusive. He keeps a sharp eye on Alyssa, not letting her out of his sight except to attend school. The only “friend” they have is Maxine, or Max, who is part of the Witness Program and is their contact in Ellicott City.

Billie Landon falls while biking and not only injures her foot but damages her bike as well. Groaning, as she has a bike race coming up soon and needs both the bike repaired and her ankle healed before then. She hobbles into Noah's bike shop and asks him to repair her bike as soon as he can. He looks at the bike and informs her it will take much longer than a couple days to repair, which means she will not be riding in the upcoming bike race. It is just as well since it will take longer for her ankle to heal so she can ride.

While at the bike shop Billie notices a little girl in the back of the shop. She is reminded of a painful part of her past seeing this adorable girl. Once Alyssa meets Billie she latches onto to her. Alyssa still misses her mother and is looking for a “mother” even though her dad doesn't seem to mind it being just the two of them. Noah tries to steer clear of Billie, or any woman for that matter, but his daughter has other plans.

Billie and Noah have more in common than they know. Both have suffered in the past and carry those wounds to this day, even so, they find that they are attracted to each other. But can Noah even think of forming an attachment with Billie with his current situation? And can Billie let go of past hurts and betrayals and let her heart love again? What does God have in store for these two hurting souls and one little girl? Will O'Malley's threat forever hold Noah back and will O'Malley actually find them and carry out his threat even from prison? Should he move them now before his heart gets more deeply involved with Billie? Dare he tell her of his past and let her decide? What will she think of him once she knows? So many questions for both Noah and Billie, what will they decide?

I have often heard of people whose lives have been forever changed when they have to go into the Witness Protection Program but never really thought much past that fact. This story, Saving Alyssa, is a glimpse of how their lives have been forever changed and the fear that must follow them wherever they go or whatever names/identity they must take in order to remain safe. Loree certainly did her research on this book, as she does on all her books, and tells a story that will touch your heart. I fell in love with Alyssa, she is a delightful little girl. Her dad and Billie certainly have had their problems but have learned to trust God in their lives. There is much in this story, drama, suspense, fear, past hurts and betrayals; but there is also a bonding with hearts that heal, restoration in God's love for each of them and hope for a future. A wonderful, delightful story. Well done Loree.

Speaking of "Heartwarming," this book definitely is. What do you think of when you think about the witness protection plan? Hardened criminals being given their freedom in a new environment with a new alias? People leaving the country for a few weeks or months of paid vacation while awaiting a trial for someone they are spilling the beans on?

What about a grieving widower with a small child, petrified that, despite tight security, the corrupt senator he already testified against might strike out from behind prison walls to kill his daughter as the villian had killed his wife? Once a prosperous and upward bound attorney working for the senator, Nate Judson-cum-Noah Preston is now the anxiety-bound, over-protective father of Malissa/Alyssa, and owner of a bike shop. He avoids questions about their past like a mouse avoids cats.

Enter Billie Landon, also grieving. Her baby girl had been still-born, and her then husband left her for another woman. Billie is also very private and downright stingy with information about herself.

Neither of them banked on one small girl bound and determined to find herself a mother.

Loved reading Saving Alyssa it was so interesting to read about what it's like to be in the Witness Protection Program. That you are as much a prisoner as a criminal. Noah Preston turns states evidence over and sends Senator O'Malley to jail who had killed Noah's wife and attempted kidnapping of his daughter. Once a lawyer Noah now runs a pretty successful bicycle shop in Ellicot City and that's when Billie Landon enters his and Alyssa's life.
Billie is recovering from her own tragic loss and takes up bicycling to help cope and keep herself busy. After a bad fall she takes her bike to Ike's Bikes not expecting the owner to be named Noah and she reluctantly excepts a ride from him because her ankle is messed up. As they both become more involved in each others lives things start to unravel and Noah fears O'Malley is getting to close and that it's time to move on before Billie learns who he truly is.

I enjoyed this book very much. The main characters were part of the Witness Security Program and had to learn to live with little contact from their family and no pictures taken. I was encouraged by the faith the characters had and built upon. The secondary characters were satisfying. The idea of finding love again after betrayal or loss is an encouragement to others. The outcome was very satisfying and I grew to love these characters. It is a great book.

Better than the average novella, this book is well-written, slightly funny, and has good character building with an okay story. I did not have to roll my eyes more than once.

Saving Alyssa is a story about the struggle of a father to fulfill every wish and dream of his darling daughter. A daughter, who, at a very young age, had had to adapt to a new identity. A little girl who had to remember not to be open about her past and who must remain in home. A life akin to living in a gilded cage.

It is a story of a woman who has lost a baby and is convincing herself that she does not need one in her life. irrespective of her convictions, though misplaced, she falls in love with the baby girl and her father. she dreams of a life with them.

Even knowing the truth, she is ready to uproot her life to bring a constant to all their lives. A constant where they become the support pillars for each other and all the little ones that may come along.

Heartwarming, really.

Unique

This story had an unusual background--the witness protection program made me look at it from a different point of view. That, plus the fact that it was clean and filled with good hearted people made it a good read
