Root and Bone

Rate this book
Leona Monroe and her sister, Jewel Spencer, live in Ames, a sleepy little Appalachian town where nothing much happens. When it does, everyone knows everything—at least they think they do. The Spencer sisters have more insight. They come from a long line of Granny Women—healers, confidence keepers, and powerful magic wielders—able to see into the future, manipulate the natural world around them, and commune with the dead.

When a girl is brutally murdered, it’s clear the local law enforcement has no idea what’s really at play. So it falls on Leona and Jewel to dig deeper into the mystery. In the middle of the investigation, strangers come to Ames who prove powerful and dangerous, setting Leona and Jewel at odds with dark magic, vengeful ghosts, and each other.

With the help of a friendly spirit, the vast knowledge of their mentor, Granny Kay, and their own powerful magic, Leona and Jewel must work together to counter the evil descending upon their town. But their insecurities and fears prevent them from stopping another murder. They need to get it together. If their magic and sister bond isn’t strong enough, their town will fall to darkness along with everything they hold dear.

Set against the backdrop of a rural Appalachian village, 'Root and Bone' immerses readers in a character-driven dark fantasy teeming with paranormal creatures, horror, supernatural mystery, and plenty of magic.

The plot is filled with perilous challenges and mystical events that keep the reader guessing. The lore of the setting is intriguing, and it would be wonderful to see how this is expanded upon in future installments.

This fast-paced, engaging novel employs a dialogue-heavy style, characterized by colloquial phrasing that imparts an informal and accessible tone.

The story follows sisters Leona and Jewel, two very different witches who, despite their opposing personalities, form a formidable magical team. This relationship is a core strength of the book; their complementary skills and contrasting traits create a dynamic, if often challenging, partnership. Granny Kay’s earthy presence adds wisdom and grounding to their journey.

The emotional undercurrent of the romantic storyline has its touching moments, and any spice is minimal. This book contains some truly dark imagery, both in and out of a supernatural context, which some readers may find triggering including violence, prostitution, and domestic abuse.

Though this novel could benefit from more detailed world-building and a deeper exploration of the already intriguing characters, 'Root and Bone' is an enjoyable read for fans of dark fantasy, horror, and supernatural mystery. Overall, a compelling plot and dynamic characters make it a worthwhile experience.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley, for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unexpectedly, this book is quite good. I mostly liked the atmosphere of witches and other dark creatures that surround this little town (I think?). However, there are also a lot of unanswered questions due to the lack of detail provided here. The background of every character feels vague, and the world-building seems almost nonexistent. Overall, many aspects of the story are quite insufficient, but this does not diminish the enjoyment of reading it.

I actually quite enjoyed this book overall, the vibes of this book were great with the story headed by two strong witches working to uncover the murderers within their small town with a range of supernatural elements.

But is no one going to acknowledge the creepy age gap between Leona and Cale when they first met??

While I enjoyed the overall plot and the relationship between Leona and Jewel, I would have liked the story a bit more fleshing out of the overall background of the town, as well as some more around their relationships and some more pauses between keys plot points to build some suspense.

I would still recommend this to those who enjoy a dark paranormal mystery, I really think a lot of people would have a nice time with this book. I also can’t wait to see how Jessica builds on from this story in the future!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

The sleepy town of Ames is shocked awake by a brutal murder. A la True Detective this small town is rocked by the brutal, religiously over toned murder of a young woman. Leona and her sister, Jewel, find themselves the only ones capable of solving this murder. The reason? They’re the only two in town equipped with magic and, in Leona’s case, able to see the dead. As the pair pick their way through the murder case, more mysteries begin to reveal themselves. The sister’s are headed for an unavoidable face off with true evil as they race against time to prevent any further murders. Root and Bone is an examination of sisterhood, class divide, witchcraft, independence, and facing off against abuse.

From what I could discern this book takes place around the 1950s or 60s, the story is packed full of retro details from jukebox tunes to pin-up curls to sassy slang. I do wish there had been a more concrete date given, I felt as if I was missing out on some of the societal implications by questioning which time period this occurred.

This book is very dialogue heavy and characters have unique colloquial styles. While I read I could hear the regional specific accent flowing throughout with ease, giving each character a specific sound and personality. Raney seems to have a never ending source of inspiration for character sound, look, and backstory — keeping her story fully staffed and varied throughout.

While there are pieces in place to create the foundation of a series, I couldn’t quite connect with Root and Bone. The characters, while varied, felt a bit flat. It was like looking at the surface of a pond, I could tell there was more depth beneath but I couldn’t breach the surface to get there. Some of the folklore characters (ghosts, ghouls, etc) felt shoe horned in as well. I was overwhelmed by the amount of different spectral creatures introduced that were then written into a corner. I found myself questioning how magic and society were supposed to be interacting with each other. I wish there had been a bit more of an explanation as to why some people knew Leona was a witch but then were shocked that other witchy things existed as well. The laws of magic felt rubbery and flighty too. There was never a true enumeration on how and why sometimes magic could just decide to not work, other than what feels like a shrugged, “Sometimes that just happens” type of vibe. To me, there are areas throughout this book that could have used a bit more description to buff it up and less round robin dialogue.

I do think if you’re a fan of witchy stories and true crime you’ll probably enjoy this book.

These Witches are bitches! And, I like it!

The Spencer sisters grew up in Ames, a little town in Appalachia, that accepts that Leona and Jewel use a bit of magic to help people out. What no one knows is just how strong the sister's magic really is, that it goes beyond love potions and herbal remedies.

Leona can see and talk to ghosts while Jewel can use location spells. Leona is afraid of her powers and uses her magic for the good only. Jewel, a fiesty rebel has no problem using her knowledge and magic to get what she wants.

When the sisters combine their magic they are mighty forces that no evil ghost, warewolf, vampire or demon can stand up to. Leona finds that using her magic and allowing herself to be fierce is necessary, especially when sending evil back to hell.

I recieved an ARC of this book so I could post my review. This is the second book I've read by Jess Raney. And this one was just as amazing, fabulous, gritty, and hard-core as the first one I've read. This book is non-stop action, full of magic and magical creatures and murder and mystery. This book is full of suspense, the kind that won't let you put this book down until the last page. I am looking forward to more by this author. This book appeals to lovers of mystery, magic, witches, and werewolves among other magical beings. While definitely hard-core on some topics, this book is definitely enjoyable and very page-turning. I highly recommend, and I've picked up all the other books by this author to read because I love her writing style. Definitely an author you need to check out.

Imagine a small Appalachian rural village sometimes post WWII: life is quiet and tranquil, if a little repetitive. Now, imagine this community being shocked by the violent and ritualistic murder of one of its girls. Here come in Leona and Jewel, sisters and witches: they immediately know something supernatural is going on and they set on to find the mysterious killer, while trying to dodge magical and human dangers coming their way.

Let me start by saying what I loved most about this book: Jewel. She was the strongest character, in my opinion. I loved that she was not afraid to get her hands dirty to get what she wanted and protect the people she loved, and I enjoyed her relationship with Leona: it felt very realistic with them constant picking on each other. I also liked Cale and I would’ve loved to know more about him and his special link to Leona.

This book could’ve been a hit for me, if it weren’t for the fact that in the last 20% things started happening extra fast and sometimes without a real explanation; I didn’t completely understand the motives behind the killings and I didn’t agree with most of Leona’s decisions, especially when she let her good nature blur her judgement. I felt like some things were left unresolved voluntarily, to be tied up in the second book, but some other things were just forgotten along the way.

All in all, it was a good book that could’ve used a little more polishing but still grabbed my attention enough to make me add the sequel to my tbr.

I love the cover and description for this book. However, I am sorry to say I did not love the story so much. I saw Granny Women in the description and jumped at the chance to read this. I should've read the whole thing. I wouldn't call this Granny magic. I did not love the characters either. The sisters bicker and pick at each other constantly. While it is in jest, it's so annoying. I could not understand the reason Leona made most of the choices she did in the book, it seemed she wanted to make life harder for herself. I did skip a big section in the middle just so I could find out who was the culprit. I will not be continuing this series, but I would give the author another try.

I received eARC for my honest opinion.

This book follows two sisters, who are witches and they both are completely different with the way that they use and see magic. You will see them with their everyday lives, and how they help out their little Appalachian town. You will go with the sister as they try to figure out a brutal murder, that ends up becoming 3 brutal murders. You will see magic, supernatural creatures, and get to watch the sisters grow and learn more about themselves. It is set in the 1950’s, so you will see a lot of references about the war but while reading the book you will just have a view of how everything was done in the 50’s.

I liked the plot of this book; I found the paranormal aspects of this book to be well done and interesting how the author would introduce new characters that are supernatural to you. I liked the magic system and found it to be what I would expect from herbs and learning to channel magic. I did at times find that there were a few slower parts of the book but once you get past that it does pick up and it does not stop until the end. I found the characters to be interesting.

I don’t know if I can say that I was able to connect with the main characters that well, mainly Jewel I found an instant connection with her, but with Leona I had a harder time with. Leona is from an era that didn’t really treat women that well. She is stuck in a loveless, abusive marriage too and drunk who doesn’t care if he beats her or their child. Leona’s daughter is cute, but at the same time she has some behavioral issues but that is understandable when you see the life that she is living. Leona does everything, she works two jobs to support her family and she does a little magical spell for extra money. Jewel is married to someone who she doesn’t love and wouldn’t mind if he passed away already. She has even thought about helping him along from time to time, but she is doing a little better than her sister. I loved that they had different views on magic and how to use it, I don’t think one of them is right but it’s all about the intent when using it. I found the character development to be well done and it was nice to see Leona at the end of the book.

I want to NetGalley and Cursed Dragon Pub for the opportunity to review this book.

I really wanted to love this book, but it was just an OK read for me. It came across to me as a mix of spooky horror, mystery, romance, paranormal or urban fantasy... but none of them were felt fully fleshed out outside of the two sisters and their witchy powers. The plot felt a bit all over the place.

I finished the book and still had questions, especially about Cale. It felt like every time I thought I understood the world and what was happening, some new element got introduced and the previous one didn't feel finished. More world building would have helped. I wanted to know more about the mysterious creature and voice that wasn't fully named and we never found out more information on. I also didn't fully understand what was going on with the revival priest and his brother and how they got to be the way they were.

The relationships between the two sisters and their husbands just felt icky to me. I have read a lot of books that mention abuse and what it was like for the victims... this was all the actions with only shallow feelings mentioned from the sisters. It was as if the abuse was just an expected part of marriage and that was not my cup of tea. The dialogue was also a little jarring for me. Were the sisters supposed to have an accent? Maybe southern US? That's kind of the feeling I got from the way it was written, but it was a bit distracting for me. The final conflicts also felt a bit rushed.

However, despite the confusion and flaws, I didn't hate it. It was dark and gritty and there were parts I loved. The relationship between the sisters was wonderfully done. The magic in the book was also interesting as were the questions about morality the book brings up.

I picked this book up as an ARC on Net Galley. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. While I received this book for free, my thoughts and opinions on it are my own.

Mystery, murder and the Supernatural in the Deep South. Initially this was giving Sookie Stackhouse vibes, with a few less vampires. Root and Bone follows the misadventures of the Spencer Sisters who are trying to solve the dark and disturbing murders that have befallen their small town.
I was a little hazy on the exact time frame that the story is set in as there wasn't a huge amount of cultural context, from the few clues provided it appears to be set in the 1950s or 60s.
At times, Leona & Jewel, The Spencer Sisters, felt a little flat as main characters.

Given that this is the first in a new series, a little more time could have been spent on developing the characters and giving more texture to their world but, all in all, it was an enjoyable read and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a bit of supernatural sprinkled in with their murder mysteries.

Root and Bone is a story about two sisters in Appalachia who are “Granny Women” (witches/magic wielders). They have a hilarious relationship with each other and a unique relationship with the town folk. Root and Bone has family ties, domestic strife, some action and suspense, and even a little romance. Jessica Raney blended memory flashbacks into a story that had me rooting for the Spencer sisters and hoping for a sequel.

Root and Bone was - above all else - a LOT of fun to read. This is a gritty, humorous, captivating tale that’s perfect for those who love all things Supernatural.
The dynamic between the Spencer sisters is delightfully authentic and instantly gives us two polar-opposite protagonists to root for (pardon the pun). Raney has also masterfully crafted a host of well-developed secondary characters, all of whom play a compelling part of the wider plot.

Root and Bone offers a naturally engaging Appalachian dialect, and firmly grasps the tone of a classic “witchy” tale well. There was a perfectly cohesive blend of mystery, magic, horror, and even a touch of romance that had me excited to read on.

Whilst an entertaining read, I did note one small element of the novel that could use a little more love.

*some light spoilers from here*

The bodies and their tortured ghosts are wonderfully twisted and gory; however, I found the character of Levi was introduced as a mysterious, threatening entity who had the potential for a great deal of chaos and spookiness, but this eventually fell a little flat for me. I felt he was disposed of as a villain a little too quickly. A cult-like following of a monster (in this case, a Vampire in the form of false-prophet-esque preacher) opens up a whole host of opportunities for a villain, but I felt this was left to fizzle out so the other monsters in the book could take centre stage. I’d have liked to see more of the brothers and perhaps explored their motivations behind their following. I’d also like to hear more about the “whispers” and the unnamed character who I hope will feature more heavily in the second book.

Root and Bone is a love letter to magical mystery fans. I most definitely want more of the Spencer Sisters, and hope Raney will treat us to another instalment in the series soon.

(Huge thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book! The above opinions are entirely my own.)

I have mixed feelings about this book.

On the one hand I loved it everything this book offered up. The magic, the paranormal, the light dusting of a forbidden romance.
On the other hand I felt like it could have been more. I wanted more character building, I wanted more suspense, I want to have more time with Granny Kay! I just felt like I wanted more. And that leaves room for a sequel, now don't it?

Overall the writing is excellent. I feel like time jumps, especially the larger ones need to be made a bit more apparent, but I still felt like they worked well in the construction of the story.

I really enjoyed the main characters and all the side characters felt well thought out and carefully crafted. I do wish that the main characters flaws and internal turmoil wad a bit more explored and expanded upon.

My only gripe is that I feel the story moves too quickly. That can be a double edged sword, I know, but it just felt like events were really close together and it didn't leave much room for you to process them before something else was happening. That just leads me back to my feelings of wanting more story.

In the end, I liked this story very much and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a pretty quick, cosy-ish thriller read.

Root and Bone by Jessica Raney

The small town of Ames, a little Appalachian town, is normally a quiet uneventful place. That is until one day a girl is found brutally murdered. The police force of Ames struggle to piece together the mystery and help is needed from the magical Spencer sisters to find out what is going on and confront the darkness that has descended upon their little town.

I loved the premise of this book and really enjoyed the spooky dark parts of this book. It was an easy, fast-paced read that had me eagerly turning the page to find out what happens next.
If you like stories with ghosts, vampires, witches and werewolves then this is for you!
I do think that the book was missing some world-building and could have done with less time on certain characters (ahem Bob needed to go) and more on others (Granny Kay!! i want a book about her) but I enjoyed this cosy fantasy story and would look forward to reading more.

If you plan to read this book just be aware of trigger warnings such as domestic violence.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and read it in 2 days! If you want an action packed book with mystery and magic, this is the book for you. In the beginning of our book, a woman goes missing. Our two main characters Jewel and Leona come from a long line of witches, and each have magical abilities. When it’s clear the police will need extra help, the two sisters step in to find the missing woman. As the story unravels, we meet evil and vengeful ghosts, and with the help of a friendly spirit and their magic, Jewel and Leona help their town.
I absolutely loved Jewel and Leona! Their strong personalities and them being women who aren’t afraid to stand up to a man made them so lovable! I also loved that the topic of abuse in relationships was covered in this story to show that sometimes it isn’t so easy for someone to leave. The magical element of this story was amazing, and the action had my heart racing so fast.
If you like mystery’s, magic and strong female characters, I highly recommend you read this!

I really enjoyed all the witchy aspects of this book. The story is set in around 1960s or 1970s, which isn't specifically mentioned, but there is a retro vibe to the entire book. It is a lot of information to take in as the book reads slowly and is a lot of world building.

There is a bunch of supernatural creatures like ghosts, werewolves, vampires, etc and they make a appearance more frequently after the cemetery scene which makes the book a lot more horror. The sisters learnt witchcraft from their Granny Kay and both have their own vows on how to use this magic when growing up which tests their relationship. There is love in the book. VERY unexpected love but it's sweet and filled with drama since it's with a ghost and Leona is actually married with a child but it was a nice add in.

Overall the book was actually a better read than I expected. I can never be disappointed about a book with witches but adding murder mystery and romance made it a lot easier to get passed the length it took me to get through the 300+pages. This is a book about witches, but also about women and their struggles in a world dominated by men. It’s brutal at times and the majority of the men in this story are horrible people!

Root & Bone takes you deep into the Appalachian hollers, where magic is as much a part of life as moonshine and family secrets...

The Spencer sisters, Jewel and Leona, are witches of very different temperaments—one sharp and calculating, the other quietly powerful—making for a delightful and at times heated dynamic as they attempt to untangle a string of brutal murders while also struggling with their abusive, d***hole husbands.

Set against the rich, moody backdrop of the 1950s, the novel deftly weaves post-war realities with supernatural creatures and a growing sense of unease. It’s the perfect blend of mystery, earthy magic, and gritty Southern Gothic atmosphere, and I was unexpectedly hooked from the get-go!

Root & Bone truly shines in its exploration of sisterhood. Jewel and Leona's complex relationship—filled with love, resentment, and dark humor—keeps you invested even when the pacing stumbles. They've both got hard shells but would each do anything for the other, even though their squabbling rivals the noisiest henhouse (the best part of the story imo).

Some plot elements do feel a tad rushed or underdeveloped, especially with characters like Levi and Galen and their potential as more realistic antagonists, but the story's heart remains strong. If you love witchy mysteries and small-town charm with a sinister twist, this is a spellbinding tale that will leave you wanting more (and I do so hope there's more)!

this book was full of plot and incredibly well written. it follows two sisters, Leona and Jewel.

Personally i think that while the book was well written and the plot was addictive, it felt a bit rushed in some areas. scenes that were meant to invoke anticipation and get you on the edge of your seat, lasted a paragraph or 2 max.

I absolutely adored leona and cale. they were definitely made for each other and i wish them all the best going forward. i would love to have a second instalment in this universe as the book has the option to go there. however if it is in fact a standalone, then the ending was perfect and isnt too much of a cliffhanger that youre left unsatisfied.

all in all, i adored this book and will definitely buy it once it officially comes out. it is a great read for people into the witchy, medieval, wearwolves and ghosts genre.

I would like to thank @netgalley and Cursed Dragon Ship Publishing LLC for the advanced arc.

I was very excited to read this book as I was familiar with Jessica’s others books such as Tooth and Nail series and These Violent Delights. I really loved this story as the prequel Spencer Sisters series. Described as Appalachia Supernatural Noir style it really has all the things I love in a story, ghosts, Ghouls, witches, vampires, werewolves. This is a fast paced, jam packed story that has all the supernatural themes a glorious mix of horror and fantasy. I loved the writing style and world building and felt like I was part of the story the whole time.

If this is the first book the prequel series well I am well and truly hooked! I immediately felt a connection to the main character Leona and really appreciated getting a look into who she is and how she is evolving as a witch and strong women, wife, mother in a time when women where most repressed, the 1950s. Dealing with an abusive husband, learning new abilities, solving murders, and dealing with seeing and controlling ghosts I can feel her exhaustion and eventual growth through the story.
I really enjoyed the sisters connection and would love to hear more about their childhoods with granny. The younger sister Jewel is sassy and powerful and their connection is exciting to read. I can’t wait to see that grow. We follow as the sisters start a journey of solving a murder as other mysterious things start to happen.

I feel this book has really set the stage for further stories and can’t wait for the next instalment and delve more into the story. I read this in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down!

I love mystery novels mixed with genre fiction. Investigating horrific murders with folk magic? Sign me up! Especially these murders, the description of the crime scenes were graphic and absolutely my thing. But the execution was so-so. The culprit was the obvious choice, and we don't really get the details about the dark god they serve, even when hints are dropped all throughout the book. I don't hate Leona and Jewel, but I can't say I loved them. And the relationship between Leona and Cale was cute... until you read about how they met, then its a little creepy. It was a quick read, a decent way to pass the time, but it wasn't the best.

Im always down for witchy reads so this book was right up my street. Sisters leona and jewel are “granny women” better known as witches, each with their own gifts, one of leonas is seeing and being able to talk to ghosts, so when a girl goes missing she uses her gift to reach out and see if she can make contact. This quickly turns from a missing person issue into two brutal murders with more likely to come, worse yet, the ghosts of the brutally murderer are wrong, angry and set on attacking leona. It’s not long until werewolves, ghouls and vampires pop up and leona must fight for her family while resisting the voice inside her baiting her to use dark magic.

This book had some good themes of the strength of a woman, specifically back in the days where women were powerless in society. The sister’s bond was the focal point of this story and it made the book good, especially as more supernatural creatures were introduced throughout the book!

The mystery plot was lacking for me, I struggled to connect to it, the way I was concerting with the sister’s family and marriage drama, along with the Galen drama. However, I did like how it all connected in the end! The ghost romance was new to me, and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it!

While this wasn’t my favorite paranormal book, I am interested in continuing the series in the future!

This book was well paced and had dark and gritty themes. It was extremely dialogue heavy which for me isn’t what I look for in a book, a better balance between description and dialogue could go a long way. The relationship between the sisters was well established but I did feel surrounding characters weren’t fleshed out enough for me to grasp a full picture.

Overall I felt this book was ok, but I didn’t enjoy the abuse that takes place. Although I understand sometimes authors like to delve into abuse to get an emotional understanding. I just didn’t think it was written in enough context and reflection for me. It made me uncomfortable at times and that largely ruined the book for me.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the e-arc of this book.

I'm sad to say I did not enjoy this at all. The description of the book sounded so interesting and fun - a witchy mystery should be perfect for me, right? However, I did not like the execution of it.

In general, there wasn't much I actually liked, to be honest. I enjoyed the ghosts and the descriptions of the ghosts, and… that was it.

The characters felt bland and uninteresting. The only one I kind of liked was Cale, and that might also be because he was a ghost… Both Leona and her sister annoyed me. Everyone in the town annoyed me, actually. Especially the men. Was it necessary? All the violence against women and assault scenes specifically.

The dialogue was… weird. I understand it was supposed to be their regional accent, but why was it missing sometimes? They talked their way and then suddenly normally. Was it on purpose or forgotten?

Overall, I can't say I hated it… I had no strong feelings towards this book except boredom. It literally put me to sleep twice, and I also had to skim most of it to even finish it - it should've been a DNF.

DNF at page 104. I felt like I critiqued this book more than I enjoyed it. I was getting sick of the amount of times everyone said the word ain't. I didn't mind them being southern but every so often southern phrases would be interjected into non dialogue and I felt like it was unnecessary. What did it for me was the word penis being changed to carrot. Out of everything the author could have chosen to use, why carrot???

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book which was just published last week. Root and Bone by Jessica Raney.

The Spencer Sisters both witches with very different powers but work together and help the sheriff to rid their little town of some evil forces. Witches, Ghosts, Vampires and Werewolves what more could you want in a book!
Took me a little while to get into but I preserved and overall was a good book.
