Shadow Slave Volume 2
5⭐+❤️

Finished reading:

Shadow Slave Vol. 2 - Demon of Change (ch. 96 - 350)

10/10!! I'd give it an 11 if I could. This novel is peak.

This volume covers most of the Forgotten Shore arc, starting from the Dark City all the way to the ending of the arc in the Crimson Spire.

First off, I just wanna say-- this arc is definitely in my top 10, maybe even in my top 5 arcs in anything I've ever watched/read/played. What a god-tier arc.

Let's start with the Pros:

✅ Lore and Worldbuilding
- The arc has some of the best lore and worldbuilding I've ever read, down to its history, mythos, and unique locales/geography.
- The lore is also revealed at such a greatly controlled pace-- the mystery just preserved long enough to keep you hooked and hungry for every new detail. From the history of the Forgotten Shore and its inception (the all-consuming darkness, the seven heroes, the artificial sun, the Spire), to the story of the first Bright Lord and his struggles to make his way back to reality, to Gunlaug and the ins-and-outs of the society he created, the Legacy clans, and even the bits of information we get of Weaver and the Nightmare Spell were all so well-done and unique, I can't think of anything like it.

✅ Characters
- The characters in this volume have shined even more this time, both the main and side cast. Absolutely LOVED Sunny and Nephis' character development in this arc.
- Watching Nephis go from someone who had trouble connecting with others, to a terrifyingly competent manipulator, while still slowly revealing that there's real compassion and vulnerability under the "Changing Star" mask, was legit so well done. That whole sequence with her and Sunny at the end made me shed actual tears. I love her character so much and I hope we get her back soon. She also aura-farmed the most this arc and all of those moments fucking hit, she's just her.
- Sunny's development was equally, if not, even more amazing to read. Coming off of the previous volume where his bonds had changed his worldview for the better, to then seeing him break and fall back down, hiding behind the mask of "insanity" to protect himself from facing the horrifying truths Cassie's visions entailed, to him regaining the courage to face those truths and rise back up again was honestly so well done. I'm really curious and excited to see where his character arc goes after that crazy ass ending to the arc, cus him and Cassie are gonna have to talk.
- Cassie is a really intriguing character. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding her but I love how G3 handles her character whenever there's instances where we as the reader see the massive weight the burden of knowledge can do to a person (whenever she gets those crazy ass visions). I'm really curious to see where her arc goes in the next volume especially with her friendship with Sunny.
- Kai was such a refreshing wave of kindness that shouldn't exist in the Forgotten Shore. Just a solid ass dude. His interactions with Sunny are always hilarious especially considering their Flaws. All the gags about him being a kpop idol were also really funny. I hope we get deeper into his character in the next couple of volumes cus there's a layer there that would be interesting to peel when he opened up about how his Flaw was really more of a curse for him as someone in the entertainment industry.
- Effie was badass what else can I say. She was hilarious too, even though I found her humor to be a bit raunchy at times lol. . Still, she feels like the kind of character who has more depth beneath the surface, and I'm really hoping future arcs peel back those layers and show what shaped her into who she is.
- The antagonists were also great too, Caster, Gunlaug, and Harus especially. They each represent a facet of the main characters thematically but I'm not gonna go into detail cus this review is long enough, but they were honestly great villains.

✅ Plot
- The plot of this arc was nothing short of amazing, especially in its structure. I won't go into detail cus i dont wanna spoil shit, but the twists and turns were fucking insane. That stretch from the Siege of the Crimson Spire all the way to that crazy ass ending was nothing short of PEAK. I could deadass just call the whole volume peak tbh since there legit wasn't a single chapter that didn't hit, but man... that final stretch was something man. Forgotten Shore's definitely a top 10 arc of all time.

✅ Atmosphere & Tension
- As I've mentioned in my review of the previous volume, one of the best things this arc does well is tension. The tension and desperation woven into the atmosphere was chilling-- I genuinely felt fear for the characters' lives at almost every turn. And that is also largely due to the worldbuilding.
- How G3 describes the environments in their unique horrifying detail is so good, they're sometimes even more terrifying and add more tension than the Nightmare Creatures the cohort encounters. The fights against those creatures were also really tense too, with the cohort just surviving these encounters by the skin of their teeth.
- On top of that, G3 is also incredible at dangling hope right in front of you, only to viciously rip it away moments later, which keeps you locked in a constant state of dread. Overall, extremely well-done tension.

✅ Fights
- The fights are all so fun to read. Not only are they written in such a way where the action is easy to follow, there's also a ton of strategy and wits involved. So you're never really lost when you're reading these fights.
- They're also just really tense and brutal too, where you can really feel the desperation in these life/death situations. Some even extremely emotional (Sunny vs Nephis fucked me up).
- Big shoutout to the Siege of the Crimson Spire, Sunny vs Nephis, The Cohort vs Spire Messenger, Sunny vs Harus, Nephis vs Gunlaug, and Sunny vs Caster for being incredibly amazing fights to read.
- I didn't think I'd enjoy reading fights in novels because of the lack of visuals, but the fights here are really easy to visualize.

✅ Power System & Progression
- One of the series greatest strengths is how intricately detailed the power system is, especially with how Soul Core Ranks, Classes, and Aspects are defined and categorized, specifically. Executed extremely well.
- The power progression between the characters have also been really satisfying to read too, especially Sunny's power progression since his path is more unique than others.
- Love the concept and execution of Aspects, Flaws, Memories, and Echoes.
- With how intricately detailed and defined the power system is, the powerscaling almost always made sense.

As for the cons... there are barely any! Well, the prose could be better, and maybe the dialogue can sometimes dip into cringe, but honestly they're fine. The pros outweigh the cons so much they don't even matter.

Either way, Volume 2 Demon of Change was a 10/10. Can't wait to read Volume 3 next!

SS is peak please read it!!

pls keep in mind im not going through this again to make sure it doesn't make me sound stupid, and also i literally just finished the volume a couple minutes ago and started the webnovel like 4 days ago (..for the 7th time)

the first time i read this volume, i was so pissed off at neph, at cassie, and at this whole soul conduit thing, and now, after going on my 7th reread, i am STILL PISSED OFF im actually probably more pissed off now
no matter how many times i reread this book the last like 10 chapters get me every single time. the final fight between neph and sunny, seeing how hard she tried to convince him to leave and how hard he tried to convince her that it would be better for them to be together for better or for worse, the moment she said his true name and seeing his imidiate attempt to kill her, the knowledge that we wont even see her again for another 500 chapters

and fucking cassie bro

the volume itself is one of the best ones imo, the character dynamics (love the introduced characters in this volume, effie, caster, and kai), the character development, the direction the plot took

This volume, I found, wasn't too drawn out (considering it spans only one giant arc) but there were some slower parts for sure. Specifically the time before the siege of the crimson spire, I wasn't really getting the benefits from when authors try and use anticipation to help build the story I really just wanted to get out of the forgotten shore omg.

Speaking of the siege of the crimson spire bro omg so well written!! I loved getting all the POV's (loved effie and kai's tho specifically, sorry aiko) Effie's pov specifically, from the front line, hearing her go from: oh there are lots of sleepers around me fighting, using me as an anchor to motivate and keep themselves going on the battle field. to: huh? nobody is watching my back?? omg they're all dead.
effie has long become one of my favorites in this novel, and i wish we could hear more about her life before meeting neph in the outer settlement, and about the girl who kinda took her under her wing bc obviously and important character to her but we don't even learn her name.

the only thing i really wish this volume didn't do was make me hate nephis. Not even like resenting her because of her goals, motivation, or ruthlessness or anything, like legit just don't like her character. i think i would like her more if i got her pov more. i like her in the later volumes, like the 3rd nightmare era.

the structure of the volume itself was (while kinda cliche) greatly done imo. The whole "expedition/group adventure" thing. it definitely couldn't have been much better.

An outstanding read, just as soon as I'm getting slightly tired of what ever's happening BOOM twist and I'm back in.

chapter after chapter the characters are interesting and developed well and there are enough twists of *fate* to keep me engaged.

Guiltythree has a magical touch that has a grip on me, there are many facets of this series so far that are exactly what I need. It's kinda anime, kinda science fantasy, kinda loot driven RPG video game. It's a whole bunch of things I love turned into an overwhelmingly lengthy webnovel series.

The end of each volume so far has not been what I would consider a cliffhanger, but leaves a few threads hanging which make it near impossible to NOT want to jump immediately into the next arc of the story.

This was.....something.

A roller coaster of emotions, delving deeper into each of the main casts' mind and thought process, while also making progression in terms of worldbuilding. Personally, at the time, was the best part of shadow slave and after reading up to vol 10 this still holds up to my 2nd ever favorite volume of the series.

If I would recommend Shadow Slave to someone, this volume would easily have been the main reason why!

This volume had one of the best endings to a book that I have read. The final battle between Nephis and Sunny is amazing and the way that everything boils down to this ending sequence is amazing to me. The introduction of Kai is amazing and the way that he acts with Sunny is amazing. This series is so easy to read and I love it.

It is a gritty look into LITRPG/Progression stories.

Sunny has become even more gritty and maybe has lost what little sanity he might have had before his nightmare began.
This is one of the grittiest, emotional, and enjoyable arcs for a story to truly start on.

Always looking forward to the next one of Shadow slave I consume.
-Listened to the book, so I can't comment on the grammar.

The ending was fire. Be careful of being spoiled though. I love how it shows the humanity amidst being forced of being in the law of the jungle type of plot. I love how there is also symbolism always maintained. Have not read this type of peak since Lord of the Mysteries.

What an exhilarating experience!

This entry steps upwards by introducing a few new interesting and fleshed out characters with intricate details that don’t overwhelm you, as well as pacing that keeps you engaged and doesn’t stray too far away from its main plot, not to mention the Siege on the Crimson Spire. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the pages during c.315 to c.350.

I kid you not my average reading speed is around 200 WPM but my heart was also going at around 200 BPM for those 35 chapters 😭

it is a must read. and I definitely can see it having a manhwa adaptation followed by an anime adaptation and it will change the industry.

Watching Sunny try to be a functional human being is like watching a carapace demon do taxes. Painful. Confusing. Weirdly impressive

The vibe is 85% horror, 15% trauma bonding.
