Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened - an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers. Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters - and other Awakened - in a deadly battle of survival. What's worse, the divine power he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect...
This volume had one of the best endings to a book that I have read. The final battle between Nephis and Sunny is amazing and the way that everything boils down to this ending sequence is amazing to me. The introduction of Kai is amazing and the way that he acts with Sunny is amazing. This series is so easy to read and I love it.

It is a gritty look into LITRPG/Progression stories.
Sunny has become even more gritty and maybe has lost what little sanity he might have had before his nightmare began. This is one of the grittiest, emotional, and enjoyable arcs for a story to truly start on.
Always looking forward to the next one of Shadow slave I consume. -Listened to the book, so I can't comment on the grammar.
this turned to be so interesting. i had fun reading all the chapters. and the new characters? they were so fun. the ending got me tho. wasn't expecting that at all. some characters were a bit of annoying.
One of the greatest arc I ever read before the ending of the volume I was speechless and the worldbuilding is just phenomenal I think shadows slave is a must read for everyone loves a good story
This entry steps upwards by introducing a few new interesting and fleshed out characters with intricate details that don’t overwhelm you, as well as pacing that keeps you engaged and doesn’t stray too far away from its main plot, not to mention the Siege on the Crimson Spire. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the pages during c.315 to c.350.
I kid you not my average reading speed is around 200 WPM but my heart was also going at around 200 BPM for those 35 chapters 😭
one of the best arcs in all of fiction. it is a must read. and I definitely can see it having a manhwa adaptation followed by an anime adaptation and it will change the industry.
The decaying and oppressive world-building, soul shard mechanics and cryptic lore fragments in item descriptions reveal an overt Dark Souls inspiration. However, the author refuses to fully embrace the resulting grimdark trajectory.
The Bright Castle exists as a beacon amidst the desolation of the Dark City, providing a stark contrast between the privileged minority living within the walls and the oppressed masses in the outer settlements exposed to harsh elements and nightmare creatures. Gunlaug has established a semblance of order using this vast inequality and the corrupt might-makes-right court system to maintain a rigid hierarchy. After his death, chaos erupts as factions clash in a desperate power struggle, each vying to fill the void left behind.
But it is laughable how sanitised and overly simplified the world is when you peel back the curtains and realise the author does not want to make his audience genuinely uncomfortable. Despite the bleak setting, the narrative glosses over harsh realities, making it seem inauthentic. The cartoonish plot resolution where the Handmaidens—a group of women that cannot just be maids of course—betray and kill all of Tessai's men without complications amplifies this artificiality.
Where are the men who would resort to violence to satisfy their sexual desires? Where are the harlots trading their virtue for soul shards and the security the castle walls provide? Where are the social climbers leveraging their natural assets for a relative life of luxury? Where are the predatory loan sharks trapping desperate individuals in endless cycles of debt? What of black markets and blood sport? Particularly since they had long abandoned hope of escaping the Forgotten Shore, the incentive to curtail such behaviours would be minimal.
It is an improved version of Solo Leveling (very low bar) with a Dark Souls skin. The main characters are never under any real threat. Adversity exists solely to justify an arsepull—oh sorry, a "fated" power-up or miraculous revelation as often is the case with progression fantasy. Shadow Slave should only be considered "peak" by 14-year-olds with limited experience reading speculative fiction.
Possibly on the best endings in ANY novel I have ever read. The final fight was amazing and well-written. The plot twist at the end left a pit in my stomach (in a good way). If the previous volume was slow, this one was perfectly paced.
