Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened - an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers. Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters - and other Awakened - in a deadly battle of survival. What's worse, the divine power he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect...
Shadow Slave Volume 5 Dreads Night runs from chapters 751 to 1060 and features the best arc of the work so far, the famous Antarctica arc. When I started reading, I saw many people saying that this arc and this volume as a whole was one of the best things they had ever read, including books, webnovels, comics, and manga, and I have to agree with them. Seriously, what the author delivered in this volume was a truly epic arc with insane bees and a protagonist who uses some crazy strategies to defeat opponents stronger than him. Sunny really shined in this arc and has certainly matured from the beginning of the work until now. Seriously, everything he's been through has transformed him into the epic character he is today, and I can't wait to see even more of his growth. If you haven't given the work a chance because of the sheer number of chapters, I recommend giving it a try. You won't regret it. You'll freak out every moment, not to mention reading one of the best reads of your life. This work is epic and has definitely become one of my favorites in life.
Having just finished this volume, I’m at a loss for words. It had slow points and issues sure, but a single book or series has not made me experience such a vast array of intense emotions. From joy to despair, to hope, and finally to grief. So as to not give any spoilers, the tragedies of this volumes and the losses within it had me sprawling as I felt the raw emotions of the story’s characters. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
The way Sunny learned to lead and use her powers was nothing short of amazing. This was quite a burdensome volume. I was on the edge of my seat most if the time. It played on my mind and feelings quite a lot. RIP all those amazing people who have sacrificed themselves or simply died trying to survive.
Also, I got so scared about master Jet, like WHAT????
Amazing, truly remarkable volume, can’t wait fir his friends to join too but I also want him to leave this damned place and rest and breathe for a second😭💔
G3 really thinks he’s TurtleMe killing everyone off 🤣🤣 (😭😭)
Antarctica was hyped up to be the peak of Shadow Slave so it’s a little disappointing to find out it’s only fine at best.
I find myself comparing each saga to the Forgotten Shore because that was incredible. Never read world building so interesting. That’s a lie. But it was good!
Especially those last few chapters. G3 is great at cliff hangers but even better at final chapters. But these were definitely some of the best in the series.
[Note for Chapter 1060 from my Kindle:]
Chapter 1060 was a punch to the gut. Sunny really was broken down. He came to Antarctica in search of something more, and went out losing everything. Perhaps he did gain what he was looking for though. Only time will tell.
Possible one of the best ending chapters in the novel so far.
That Jet reveal was a big sigh of relief though ngl 😭
What a strange flaw.
I don’t know if I like the answer that Sunny came to though… I think that conviction does exist. Or maybe it’s just that simple desires are still valid.
Let’s see who wins. The Sovereigns and their ambitions of abandoning Earth, or Sunny’s desire to keep his loved ones safe.
Also listening to “Our Heroes Return” whilst reading this chapter was spectacular.
And that last line? Absolute. Fucking. Chills.

It is a gritty look into LITRPG/Progression stories.
I had thought the forgotten shores arc was gritty, dark, and put Sunny into insanity. This arc was much more than that. We could feel him break, multiple times, only to have to pick himself up and keep going. We broke with him <3
Always looking forward to the next one of Shadow slave I consume. -Listened to the book, so I can't comment on the grammar.
I have to say that up till now the forgotten shore arc stays my favorite arc, *however* this arc right here comes reallyyyy close. Truly some devastating scenes, new and epic monsters and fights, a power-growing Sunny and Saint and lots of cool characters (rip to most of them) And oh gosh the ending- Hello? the author really did have me for a second there?! o: Hyped for the next volume where we hopefully see more of the other part of the main cohort TT
Wow. This was an insane ride. Better than Forgotten Shore Arc even, and I loved that one. Unique, interesting scenarios, great dynamics with Sunny, his new position/allies, great side characters (which this series would go up another level if the author let us spend more down time with the characters, letting us see them develop more of a bond and interact- I love the calm down chapters/other pov chapters - they were great) and even great moments of horror and unease.
At the time of reading this, I was hopeful, full of hype for how the story would go. My expectations would be full of powerups, more allies, and more beasts that the main character would demolish.
My wishes were....granted, in one way or another. But, of course everything came at a cost. A cost that somehow grew and grew as the chapters went by, changing the hope that I once had into pity.
Master Sunless is so fun to read about. The entire Antarctic campaign is one of my favorite arcs in the whole series so far and seeing Sunny's relationship with all of the people in his team grow is great. Also seeing the development of Sunny to care about more then just himself was great to see. Loved this Volume.

Lots of interesting things happened to him, of course. He’s one of the most interesting people in two whole worlds, after all. People go around giving him sandwiches, medals and the like - And that’s how lost from light slowly became more human.
Good to see some character growth, but some of the mechanics are getting stale (e.g. monster is too strong, he doesn't know how he'll beat it, he just barely figures out a way).
