Disclaimer 1: I do not claim to possess any expertise or refined taste in this genre of historical fiction/thriller. Hence caveat emptor. My observations are as common, mundane and unpolished as any Bhairavwasi could be.
Disclaimer 2: I am not a book reviewer. That does not hold me to any lofted morals of sincerity or transparency. I review only what I like and almost never give ratings below 3. Authors put in a lot of hard work which must be appreciated even if the output is not really exciting. Ok the disclaimer ends there. The review begins. The Bhairav Putras is really exciting!
I had my doubts before reading this book. I am a notorious 'book dropper' (is there a word for that?). I have abandoned several contemporary bestsellers mid or quarter-way, and that happens when I tread in genres beyond my primary interest area. Nothing wrong with those books or their authors. It is just my damn idiosyncrasy. I am amazed I held on to Bhairav Putras and finished it and liked it. Enough of I ... let me talk of him now. He as in the author.
It is incredible that a young man still at college conceived and executed this book. That to me, is a remarkable achievement. Historical fiction requires a level of maturity which usually comes gratis with age, however Suhail Mathur has proven otherwise. But he has more sparks than maturity. He can plot a novel well. I mean REALLY well. He chose to include a huge cast of characters but has remarkably justified each character's presence in the storyline. That is not easy. Although I still feel a few lesser proper nouns to worry about would have made it more enjoyable read, but well that is where Disclaimer 1 applies:-)
Next the core storyline. It started with a distinct Lagaan feel to it, but the crafty author has done well to include that reference of Champaner in the story itself, steering clear of that potential comparison. With several twists and turns the story is a combination of history and myth. One is able to visualize with graphic morbidity the barbarian misrule of the British. I have often wondered how it would have felt if I were born before 1947. I found my answer reading this book. Superb portrayal of spinning a fictional yarn while keeping authentic historical events in context. Thanks to Bhairav Putras I will now not say a "Who?" when I come across the name of Surjya Sen.
There is one more thing I found truly outstanding in this book - the flawless use of wit and humour. Now I am not talking about inserting some crass jokes to make a character's dialogues appear funny. The use of wit throughout this book was an absolute delight to savour. What is required is the stinging cocktail of the right humour at the right time delivered in teh right context of the unfolding scene. Loved that and it was a really intoxicating cock'tale'
And oh I forgot to mention this is still the debut effort of the author. Surely, he has been blessed by Lord Bhairav himself.
Cover: I am always a big fan of good book covers & must say that The Book Bakers design great ones. The cover of TBP is no exception. The close of full moon on an eerie night emerges the putras which gives a mystic aura. Sure you would glance at the cover twice just to appreciate the art.
Blurb: The minute I read the blurb, I was high for it was a cocktail of two of my favorite genres Historical Fiction and Mythology. The synopsis talks about the long forgotten town of Bhairavgrah and its heroes who plan to usurp the mighty Britishers. Did they succeed or succumb under the mighty rule forms the crux of the story.
Between the pages: Very few authors pick up Historical Fiction as genre for their debut novel, so Suhail has to be applauded for venturing into the road less travelled. I liked the premise that the author chose – Pre Independence era and bring to spotlight those forgotten heroes who had a role in our Independence.
First few pages reminded me of our History text book with lot of names to remember but the story picked up momentum. The language was not pedestrian at the same time not too difficult to comprehend. There were moments of brilliance which makes one turn pages. I enjoyed the court scenes and witty one liners. The author has played well with his strengths. Suhail has deftly portrayed the struggles of the freedom fighters and their mettle which elicit a sense of patriotism.
I would have enjoyed if there was a back story of why the town was named Bhairavgrah, the role of Bhairashokapustaka which was found after heavy ordeals would have been much more than just making appearance in the beginning and the end. Also the final fight was a bit overdone and reminds you of clichéd Bollywood fight.
A good one time read and all I wanted was a pinch more of Mythology. The book ends with a promise of a sequel and looking forward to it.
I purchased a lot of books this February at the world book fair hoping to satisfy my hunger for reading. There were a lot of international authors I purchased and there were a lot of Indian authors as well!!! Bhairav Putras was one of them. At that particular stall all the books had one quote on their cover pages, which was by the author Mr Suhail and it was tagged The Bestselling Author of Bhairav Putras. My mind straight away picked the book and I purchased it hoping for a great read. There are three things you need to know about the book before reading the review.
1. It is a rip off from Amish Tripathi's trend of mythological fiction. Somehow everyone feels that is the only thing that sells.
2. You cannot finish the book in a single go. I literally suffered through the almost 350 pages somehow.
3. With such a weak story line and an average command over the language you will be amazed as to how the author keeps tagging himself as a bestseller.
Then to be doubly sure, I went though all the reviews here and as well as on amazon. Turns out most of the reviews are by his friends only.
So the journey of Bhairav Putras is a journey I am not particularly proud about. There are phases when there is too much over hyped patriotism and there are places where you will bang your head as to why you are reading the book itself. Then interestingly I found a neutral review on amazon, a poor guy like me had purchased and read the book. His views were pretty close to mine. Its an example of the mediocrity of Indian writing of the Present Generation. I really do not know what he was trying to pull of in this so called epic mytho saga but I would like to say. Thanks for wasting my time and money. I just lost whatever faith I had in Indian writers.
Very few time you come across a book that have the ability to stay with you forever. One of this kind of book is The Bhairav Putras by Suhail Mathur. This book takes you to the time of revolution when Indian decided to root off the Britishers from our mother land. The plot of the book is set in the year 1936 on the lands of village called Circa.
This book talks about the belief of Indians, the brutal behavior of Britishers against Indians, the planning and plotting of revolutionists, the bloodshed and the spirit to stand against the evil. There was not a single moment when your interest would lose off from the gripping storyline. The writing style of the author is like the flow of river; smooth and steady. The characterization is brilliantly done and you can actually feel the character around you while reading the book.
I would rate this book as 4.5/5 stars and also would like to congratulate the author for this brilliant masterpiece and would wait for the next bestseller from him.
The Bhairav Putras Finished THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS - A Suhail Mathur Novel... a exciting and good read indeed... worth spending few bucks... but I must admit that you have miles to go... I have come across many authors ... but you are one of them and the language was so impeccable and story was so gripping i finished within 2 days...
Sometimes you have to pick the gun up to put the gun down. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.Revolution only needs good dreamers who remember their dreams.
Keshav raichand , the protagonist and his co-revolutionaries well portrayed... As young Raju stated , " Revolution is a time when both, the young and old, must participate equally to attain independence." The valor of Raju mind boggling... finally a good read...
A brilliant and engrossing piece of fiction that not only blends the historical facts with mythological secrets, but also instill in the reader, a sense of patriotism....The THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS - A Suhail Mathur Novel by my young friend Suhail Mathur is a fast paced tale of Indian freedom struggle that was somehow lost in the mist of time....
There are many characters that come and go in the story but what amazes me is the fact that all these characters stay with you as a reader once you are through with the book...and that for me is a big thing as a reader. Not only the writer has paced the story well but the kind of research he has done also needs to be applauded. It is easy to get off track while setting a period drama but here in this case the tale goes on smoothly and at the end the reader feels as if it should have gon on and on and on...
First thing I want to say is I curse my friend for lending me this garbage. Second thing is I'm grateful that I didn't buy it. Third thing is I curse myself for spending time to read this book. If you want to know how the worst book in the history would look like, please have a look at it. He should go for language training to start with. Poor. Pathetic. Dishonest. I can't find enough adjectives. His book does not even deserve one star. Pieces of junk piled up together. I'm not sure how long it took for the author to compile this junk, but I guess it took longer for me to read this. I would never take such reading challenge. It is injurious to health. I wouldn't even recommend this to my enemy. It's bad to hurt someone like this. He would get it back if he doesn't stop. I wanted to tell the guy - what goes around comes around. I hope he understands.
I just finished reading The Bhairav Putras by author Suhail Mathur and I am simply fascinated. This book is a lot of things and all of it is fresh. The story has thrill, mystery, history, and mythology synced so well with a very attractive style of narration. For most parts, the book is witty, and for the other parts, it’s simply gripping. The more I went into the book the more I found myself amazed with it. The characters are so well drawn and each of them is special. The book is a break from all the monotony of same kinds of stories we read these days. I give two thumbs up to it!
The Bhairav Putras put forward a marvellous storyline. The Author has been successful in presenting an intelligent set of work. The book is a perfect blend of history, mythology and fiction and keeps the reader fully engrossed as the story unfolds. I recommend the book to the readers from all age groups . Don't miss it if you are a history lover or take interest in the tales of chivalrous freedom fighters. Grab your copy now... You gonna love it...!
Suhail, i don't have enough words to praise your masterpiece, but will try it with few i can manage. Your book was a beautiful blend of not only myth and history but also of the rebellious young blood of Indians in pre-Independence period which has made it a page-turner. And at last, the marvelous storyline kept me intrigued!!!..... THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS - A Suhail Mathur Novel truly rocks our souls!!...
The book bharav putras was lovely. The author bought out the story very differently. It kept me tiI loved the book bharav putras. It kept me tied to it. I just kept on reading it day to night. It had a mystery in it which made it so intresting. Loved it. Hope to see more such novals.
Some books are so profound in their style of writing that they leave a deep imprint on your life. If a book is on your mind even after days of reading the book then I would say it is worth every penny. One such book which was on my TBR since long was “The Bhairav Putras”. Thanks to diwali that I had made November a mythic month. This particular book has both the flavors of mythology and pre independence era which I feel are the toughest genres to write because they are directly related to the religious and emotional sentiments of the people.

Indian writing style is slowly getting transformed from a single monotonous genre of Romance and trying to explore the best of other worlds as well and this debut novel of Suhail Mathur can surely be named as an important milestone in the journey of this transformation. THE BHAIRAV PUTRAS is a brilliant debut work and shows the brilliance of it’s author.
Now starting from the first look of the book. It’s title does confuses with Amish Tripathi’s novel ‘The Vayuputras’ and leaves an impression over the reader that it would be a kind of mythological fantasy fiction but thanks to the detailed blurb, confusion gets clarified soon. The story starts with the arrival of the cunning Britisher John Robbins in the town of Bhairavgarh. The first scene itself is so brilliantly written that the reader will get himself attached emotionally with the storyline and this attachment will be maintained by the author till the last page of the novel.
Talking about the characters. They seems to be just apt and vivid in a unique manner. Each character has it’s own set of beliefs and sticks to them till the very end. Author has kept the fact in mind that the characters are of the period of 1940′s while designing their traits and that proves to be the another beauty of it.
Twists and turns are placed at the right place and the writing style itself create the aura of suspense whenever the reader demands for it. The best thing about the book is that the facts are blended within the fiction perfectly and the touch of myth proves to be a kind of Midas touch over the whole storyline.
Now the negatives. Though the overall story seems to be perfect but I felt two things which could be made stronger. Firstly, the myth portion was predictable. Last few pages looked worthless to be read. Another thing which I found weak was the last encounter of Robbins and Keshav. That was way to filmy and being a true reader I would never encourage the filmy non-sense in my book.
One star for the age of the author. Other wise it is a mix of Lagaan, Mythology and freedom struggle with a confused narrative. At one point the protagonist tells a character... take a flight to UK..... this is 1930s we are supposed to be in. Only 50,000 flew Imperial Airways from 1930 until 1939 and paid incredibly high prices. So how does a deserter from British army fly himself and daughter of his commanding officer to UK? No one will ask for documents? Such thoughtless narratives pepper the book. A princess unheard of till last 20-30 pages suddenly wants to marry the protagonist, who has displayed hardly any of the much flaunted character traits. The revolutionaries are either in jail or in hiding, so revolution is restricted to two violent acts and the revered bhairav putra's life motive is to stop the group from getting into disastrous situations whenever they appear. The book that is supposed to provide guidance to revolutionaries is read after the revolution is done with and the worst is the very very clear ambition of the the author that this book would be made into a movie. The author needs to understand that cliff hangers are called so since they are but a few, not every chapter can end with... will it.... time will tell..... why did..... will be revealed soon...... It is a very difficult book to read at one go because of the confused narrative and repetitive use of one liners from the author which increase both in their appearance and irritation value as the book goes on. Maybe the author can try sticking to one genre.
The Bhairav Putras an epic tale set forth in the pre -independence India that revolves around a rebel of Bhairavwasis against British despotism. The central character of the saga Keshav Raichand, the young and dynamic son of the local zamindar and his companions, plot a revolution to overthrow the British imperialist from their soil. What follows is a nerve-racking adventure knit with nail-biting twist. Interestingly the tale holds parallel plot which pivots around a hunt for a long forgotten book written during the rule of Ashoka-The Great. The book is the key to many undisclosed….even the solution to oust the British oppressors. When Keshav and his companions board the journey to discover this long lost book, they come across by four mysterious men of unusual strength and courage, The Vairavars. As the story unfolds, the true identity of these mysterious strangers unfurls. Suhail Mathur, it’s an admirable novel with an amazing narrative that makes this book speak to the readers. It is laudable that you played with so many plots in this one tale yet managed to maintain the essence of all. The tale is a wonderful interweave of history and fiction. A sure shot page turner!!
I took 16 days to finish this book instead of 2, it was just the work pressure and that is it, because The Bhairav Putras is an extremely gripping Novel. I think it is imperative for every Indian to read this book for it will teach the art of patriotism. How Suhail has developed this plot intrigues me beyond my imagination. For a young writer there is maturity in the writing which is very unlikely in today's young writers. Suhail is an ideal role model when it comes to inspiring the youth to connect with our History. Also this book stimulates to love your country in many ways and still believe that Indians never give up. The characters in the book are a great blend of intelligence and devotion which amalgamates and is a great support system for each other. It shows that we should boycott the class system and believe that we all are capable of achieving great things. Great work Suhail, I am waiting for your second novel now. Lord Bhairav has truly blessed you!
Just finished reading the book and to be entirely frank, I usually run far away from historical fictions... But this one was spellbinding! There was something so thrilling about it and even the entire fantasy part where we see the Vairavars, the hunt for the Book of Secrets, etc doesn't seem animated or childish at all (That's a big achievement!). The book has been written in a way that you feel like a part of the story... It was such a fantastic journey and I would most definitely recommend it to every person who is not a big historical fiction fan. A very well thought out piece of work indeed.
Title is apt and so the story of Bharaivwasis. I enjoyed reading every chapter. Kudos to writer 'Suhail'. He has woven words beautifully. As story is set around1940 year, author successfully transported readers into vivid imaginations of pre-independence era. Book is full of mystery and thrill. Each character is well portrayed. Keshav-the real hero, with his satires makes reader engrossed till the end with his bravery and intellectual work. Overall, a good book.
What a book! It has been a real long time since I read a book and found it so difficult to keep that even after putting it aside, kept thinking about it. Characters specifically "Samhara" is brilliant and there is no doubt in how the story has been woven. The histo-mytho representation is simply superb and very rare and gifted people can pull it off; Suhail being one among them! It is one of my best reads. Great Job! Brilliant Work!
An excellent piece of work.A must read for all age groups. An excellent blend of Facts, action, suspense and evocative imagery.Keeps the audience hooked on.A highly recommended Book to read. The Bhairav Putras
A gripping book which will not let your eyes off from the book till you complete the book in the end. A book is written in simple language with a wonderful narration. A must read book for all book lovers.
Truly amazing.....book has written in such good manner where you will get combination of our Independence history and mythology. Tight grip on story and characters put you on ride of Indian Independence movement.

In a single word, the apt description for the book is “brilliant”. I am in awe at the incredible research that has been done to bring out the authenticity of the story amidst the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle.
The story begins in the year 1936 and is majorly based in the lively town of Bhairavgarh famous for its gigantic golden statue of Lord Bhairav that’s stood the test of time despite the plundering invaders of the century. However, the serenity of the hustling town is disturbed when the British set up their cantonment in the area. True to their oppressive and tyrannical nature the British shower ruthless aggression on the innocent residents and even hurt religious and cultural sentiments plunging the town into a state of darkness, and threatening to permanently absolve the area of its heritage.
However, a young group of revolutionaries let by the dynamic Keshav Raichand raise to the occasion and embark on a sojourn filled with adventure, deceit, and divine intervention. Here on the story takes incredible twists and turns involving the heroic fights and escapades of the revolutionaries, helped by mysterious powers they don’t fathom till the end of the successful movement.
Finally, brain and wit lethally combined with valor emerge victorious and the British are driven out of Bhairavgarh for good, returning the town to its past glory that remains even to date.
The book is a must-read particularly if you love historical fiction. Its one unputdownable!!!
