Sons of Adam #1

The Beginning

Rate this book
Ronny Parker has always been aware that there was more to life outside of his Harlem apartment. When he goes to work one morning at Starbucks, he finds himself coming face to face with a reality that he was not prepared for. He finds himself the eyewitness to a fight between two shifters, a wolf and a lion, one of which bites Ronny and calls him “mate.” When Ronny wakes up the next morning he finds himself thrust into a world neither his family, nor his teachers ever taught him about and he does the only thing he can do. He starts to investigate.

Cole Tronk has been taught from an early age that he is never to mate a human, never reveal his true nature to a human and that he cannot be gay. But when he gets into a fight with his oldest friend outside of a Starbucks and finds himself smelling the most intoxicating scent ever, he throws all of those rules out of the window. Before long, Cole and his mate, Ronny are on the run from the governing body of the paranormals, humans who have now discovered that paranormals, magicks and supernaturals exist, and someone from Ronny’s past who is determined to kill them both.

Along the way, Cole and Ronny meet up with a group of paranormals, magicks, and supernaturals who are also gay, and who are researching the true history of the world and creation. What they find will not only change their lives, but the entire world and the future. Will Ronny and Cole’s mating survive all of these obstacles and when a millennias old lie comes back to bite them in the ass, will Ronny and Cole be able to deal with the consequences?

Vicktor Alexander “Vic” wrote his first story at the age of 10 about his youngest sister and her destruction of the world…with her breath.  Much to his youngest sister’s dismay the story was a hit and became the first story of a series all dealing with the planets that were destroyed by his siblings and their strange quirks and body odors. Vic now enjoys writing about shifters, humanoids, cowboys, firemen, rent boys, fairies, elves, dancers, doctors, Doms, Subs, and anything else that catches his fancy, all sexy men falling in love with each other and having lots of naughty, dirty, man-on-man sex.  Author of the best-selling series, The Tate Pack, Vic is a huge fan of the “happily-ever-after” ending. But while his characters all ride off into the proverbial sunset, all sexually satisfied and in love, they all bear the scars of fighting for that love, just like in real life. Out and proud, Vic does not believe that love only comes in one form, one race, one gender and that not only is gender fluid, by sexuality as well.  Vic loves to make people laugh and when he’s not writing, or rather, procrastinating in writing, he’s reading, playing the Sims 3, hanging out with his very supportive adopted family, talking to his adopted daughter, whom he affectionately calls "Chipmunk", seeking the man or men who can handle his crazy, stressful, soap opera-esque life and being distracted from his writing by drooling over pictures of John Barrowman, Scott Hoying, Charlie David and Shemar Moore.

I originally got this because the excerpt made me laugh. Actually, this line is what really reeled me in:

Ronny’s eyes widened. He’d read enough romance novels to know what that word meant and he also knew that there was never a black man or woman involved in something like that. Mates seemed to be only for other races, so there was no way that he could be somebody’s mate.

It’s a true statement depending on what romance you’re reading. But it just made me cackle so I said eff it. I was looking for something absurd and I got exactly that.

To be honest, I was looking up ‘mpreg’ on ARe and goodreads and this popped up. Mpreg is the final frontier for me. I’ve read and accepted a lot off-the-wall shit, but mpreg is such a record scratch in my head. Cisgender men getting pregnant and giving birth is just so beyond my comprehension.

So anyway, so when I decided to buy this, I knew I was getting into the height of absurdity. But it turned out to be quite interesting and I got into the story. It starts off like most shifter romances do— mate meets mate and insta-love ensues— but the changing of biblical history got me paying attention.

All the similar sounding/looking “biblical” names made it really hard to follow the world building and in some parts, distracted from the current day timeline part of the story. I found the prologue and flashbacks out of whack with the rest of the story. In that instance, I’d be totally okay with more telling than showing and staying with Cole and Robby. And there was superfluous information that didn’t help do any for the story (eg- shopping for furniture).

As far as the mpreg was concerned, I was expecting more. But no one seemed to know anything in that regard. On the one hand, I would’ve liked more focus on the mpreg, but on the other hand, I’m glad it wasn’t as graphic as I feel it could’ve been. I’m still confused on the hows and the whys, but it’s fantasy, I can look over it.

There were a lot of characters, possibly too many, and the destined mates are supposed to save the world. While the writing could’ve been tighter and the world the book is based in could’ve been explained better, I’m definitely interested in where this series is going.

I couldn't even get through half of this. It just was not my style.

First things first, as a black woman, I did feel that in the beginning the author put too much emphasis on Ronny being black or on the black characters in general. When Cole went as far as to jokingly say the word "homies" to Ronny and Ronny was okay with it, I nearly threw my computer across the room. No one speaks like that anymore and I doubt so even in Harlem.

Also, I understand that a part of the book's plot is to find the real truth on creation but....it was incredibly unbelievable. None of the creation plot that I had been introduced to in the short few pages that I read made any sense. The author even went as far as to say that the first few people on Earth were actually all gay and their names reflected the places where they were from such as "Indio" "Afrise" "Negolas" "Litano"....I'm sorry but just no.

Also, the sex scenes made me kind of want to peel my eyelids off....SPOILER: Cole jokingly calls Ronny his Danish, which I don't understand but assume that it must have something to do with his race since just about every other description of him does. At one point during a particularly "intense" (I suppose) climax, Cole literally shouts, "Danish!"

.......

I'm sorry but this just wasn't for me. Considering the author's influences I wasn't surprised.

I really had higher hopes for this, as I love m-preg and that was to be included in this story. I couldn't even hold out to get to that part, but it would probably make me roll my eyes and hope for better in other books to come.

I'm kind of pissed that I paid six bucks for this also.

Anyways. I have much higher hopes for books with an m-preg plotline. And also for the M/M genre.

I purposely didn’t read the blurb before I started reading the book, so I had no preconceptions about what the book was about. To be honest, while reading the prologue I was thinking to myself, oh bloody hell what have I gotten myself into? There were so many brothers of Adam that I just knew I wouldn’t be able to keep them straight. The prologue did though set the stage for the background of the story and helped start us learning about an alternate history, that we, the Sons of Adam know nothing about.

Thankfully the hard names were only in the prologue! As soon as Chapter One began, we were in the current time, in Harlem. Right away we meet Ronny Parker, a 5’11” young black man who works as a barista at a coffee shop. Ronny takes the bus to work, but when he gets off the bus he hears sounds like arguing and fighting down the alley at the back of his employer’s shop. Imagine his surprise when he finds his co-worker Benjamin fighting with another man. It isn’t the fight that surprises him, but the fact that Benjamin has hands like wolf paws and the other man has hands that look like lion paws. Then they both shifted into animals! Once they see him they approach him, shifting back to human. Ronny is in for a bigger surprise when the lion man sniffs him, says “Mmmmm, Mate”.

The man introduces himself as Cole Tronk and within minutes he has bitten and claimed Ronny. What Cole has done, mating with a human, is against shifter law and he and Benjamin are both now going to be hunted and killed. Ronny, though innocent, will be killed as well.

Things get worse when Cole partially shifts when Ronny is threatened, and someone gets it on video on their camera. Overnight, the world knows about shifters and the hunt is on. Along the way we will learn that our whole concept of Biblical history is half true at best. I really liked the flashbacks as Ronny is reading “The Real Holy Bible: What the Human Christians Don’t Want You to Know.” The image of Noah as a procrastinator was humorous.

This was an entertaining read. I really liked it, so I’m hoping there is a Book Two coming soon! I probably would have rated it a 4.5, but the lack of certainty of a sequel, and the open story lines made me hesitate. I highly recommend the book though. If you’re into shifters, and alternate Biblical history, with a touch of irreverence then this book is for you!

This is book 1 of a new series, so it starts the whole world building scenario. Imagine.... The bible we have, we all know is interpreted to suit the prejudices of many close minded people. So what if it's not the real bible, what if there's another much earlier very different book that would rock the world as we know it?
Ronny meets Cole and his friend Ben and quickly has his world turned upside down by just such a development. They run meeting and joining a pack of So many story possibilities (I'm hoping Ben gets first dibs). The love between these two is scorching hot, and so very affectionate. There are Laughs, fights, running across states, and all with the Knowledge that the war is coming, and Ronny and his group will be in the thick of it. I can't wait.

This book was a blast to read. It was definitely different from my usual fare, and I loved it. Vicktor Alexander managed to combine tongue in cheek humor woven throughout the narrative with sexy scenes, serious topics, and a sense of real peril for the protagonists. The concepts in this novel were very interesting and creative. Great worldbuilding is something I appreciate, and this book has a good bit of it. I enjoyed the characters' distinct personalities. Ronny was the most fun for me, and Cole just cracked me up. I definitely recommend this book for people who have a sense of humor, and who enjoy urban fantasy, alternate creation myths, and/or shifters!

It is always nice to see when people improve and in writing this story mr. Alexander proved he could.
