To twelve-year-old Bailey Walker, kin means more than just family. It means being a part of the Animas bond, a harmonious link that connects humans and animals, and guides everything in his world. But Bailey hasn't found his kin yet, and without an Animas, he's destined to be an outsider-or worse, lose his mind entirely. So when he's accepted into the prestigious Fairmount Academy, he's determined to Awaken to his Animas once and for all, even if it's a measly worm.
But once there, Bailey can't resist the pull of the dark mysteries surrounding the kingdom. A bear has been viciously attacked on school grounds, and when he and his friends discover signs of a ferocious predator in the woods surrounding campus, he knows something's out there, something dangerous. And Fairmount isn't the only place where darkness is brewing. In the capital city, a new leader preaches that humans must assert power over their kin, enslave them instead of living as one.
Bailey can't shake the feeling that the root of the unrest, and the key to his Awakening, lies in an old riddle entwined around an even older prophecy-a prophecy that may reveal the truth about the rightful king of Aldermere. And Bailey may be the only one who can unravel them. The capital's dark forces will stop at nothing to prevent the prophecy from coming true. If they succeed, the Animas bond will be in peril. Can Bailey help protect the Animas bond while still trying to awaken to his own? In this first installment of the gripping ANIMAS series, the battle is just beginning.
Made it to about 52% and didn't finish. Not a bad book by any means at all, it's quite good but it just doesn't grab or hold my interest. I'm giving this a 4 star rating not necessarily because I enjoyed it myself but because I know this is a book that others will greatly enjoy.
I love the idea of humans and animals being bonded together. In this world humans have a bond with a single species of animal that usually manifests in their pre teens. No later then 11 years old usually. Many have a single animal whether it be a fox, owl, snake, eat, etc that they have an especially close bond with. They react to each other's instincts, feelings, and share the same pain with them and with all others of the species they are kin to.
The society as a whole is very sympathetic and close to animals. But there are some who view the animas bond as a weakness and believe that animals should be dominated, not respected. Humans and humans alone are on top and there is no room for sympathy. Animals should be controlled not treated as friends.
The main character is a young boy who has yet to discover what animal he is kin to and even thinks that he might be absent. Something that is looked down upon or viewed with pity by most people as it is said that those who are absent eventually go crazy.
The prophecy/a king will rise plot is pretty standard and while I didn't finish the book it's pretty easy to see where things are heading although there will likely be some twists along the way.
I like the message of the main character not wanting to let his absence of any animas abilities hold him back from living and enjoying his life and I think that's a good theme to send across to readers. Minus the getting in trouble at school part.
While this book didn't really grab my attention it is still one that I would recommend to younger readers who love animals or to older ones looking for a good story.
Fantastic! I like this world with humans bonded for life with some creature or other. It's so novel and refreshing... Wait. Ah, yes, there was that strange story with humans and their daemons, which makes much more sense technically, but who cares. And there is that lost king with regrettable memory gaps... Anyway, this story about yet another prophesied chosen one, who behaves stupidly at every turn and destined to save the world, is so interesting. I'm still not sure what role Harry Potter, I mean Bailey Walker with his White Tiger (should be all capital letters probably) must play in this power struggle for the throne, but it will undoubtedly be clear later on. After all, there is not much else in the story, other than the power struggle between an unmistakable evil and a thoughtful good. At least the characters themselves are hinted at, as well as some friendship between them. Overall, it was a marginally enjoyable read, more or less typical for a nothing special middle grade novel.
I don't want to rate this too highly because I know I read this when I was only 10 but the story telling had such a strong pull towards my intricate 10 year old mine and the books fantasy concept genuinely entertained my Pokemon addicted brain
I want to read this particular series because I read The Golden Compass series and I love the idea of animal partners. I think it will be a fun read with mystery and adventure.
This book was absolutely amazing, so many twists and turns and of course PLOT TWISTS! I was amazed at the end and it left me hanging, and now I have to wait for the next book to come out!! Ugh! I love the idea of people being connected to animals and having a magical bond with them. And I read Spirit animals as well, but I found this book to be exceptionally better. In terms of Writing, and Plot. But Besides the point! I really enjoyed the mix of action, fantasy, Political war, and more! I recommend it for everyone!
Tremlo's Fox animas, named Fennel is very elegant and intelligent but every time I read about Fennel I see this GIF in my head

Legacy of the Claw by C. R. Grey is a rousing first book in the Animas series. Adventure, friendship, evil, and family all combine to make this a wonderful tale. This relatively new novel entranced me, and I am now reading the second book of the series. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
It isn't very often that a book manages to keep me in the dark up until the very end and this one succeeded in doing that. Generally I figure out all the secrets and clues early on and am a little disappointed but Animas managed to trick me and for that I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the next one and I can only hope it's put together as well as this one.

Meine Meinung Der Schreibstil gefällt mir sehr gut.

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Twelve-year-old Bailey has been accepted to the prestigious Fairmont Academy in Aldermere where he hopes that he will finally find his animas, a unique bond with an animal that almost everyone has by the time they are his age. The Dark Woods that surround the school seem menacing, but Bailey senses mysterious happenings occurring there and that something or someone is watching him. He and some new friends begin to venture out at night, which leads to some scary and wondrous adventures as well as the threat of expulsion by the school administration. The story has elements reminiscent of the "Harry Potter" series, including a unique school game called Scavage, teachers who are not always what they seem, and encroaching dark forces. This novel about a murdered king, his ambitious and unscrupulous daughter who seeks to overturn the animas bond and make the animals subservient to the humans, her missing brother, and a legendary "child of war" is a fun page-turner with interesting characters and unexpected plot twists. Readers will be propelled toward the next volumes in this entertaining new series.—Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA
Although listed for young adult readers, but I found it an interesting read would with interesting characters. There are unique twist and turns that keep the reader hopping.
My rating of "Legacy of the Claw" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.
My favorite part was when Bailey discovered his Animas was White Tiger, and the last one left, Taleth, was his kin. I liked that Bailey managed to make good friends at Fairmount, because it seemed like he had no friends at all from where he lived before. My least favorite part was when Ms. Sucrette was actuallt Joan, working for Viviana, and tried to kill bailey and Taleth. It reminds be a bit of Midnight for Charlie Bone (the boarding school part) and Spirit Animals (the bonds with the animals). It is a really good book, way better than I expected. It seemed as if all the main characters had nicknames, except for Bailey for some reason.

Bof...
This book reminds me a bit of the Charlie Bone books, a bit of Spirit Animals, and a bit of Harry Potter. I've read the book before, so the plot twists near the end were of no surprise to me, but it took me a little while to remember what they were. I kept getting a few of the teachers mixed up. I just wish that I could read the whole trilogy; I can't because the library doesn't have the third book, and neither do I.
A decent read I guess. I binge read it in one sitting. For a children's book it wasn't too short, although there are some plot holes here and there that bothered me, and I'd like to learn more about the world. Hopefully the next books will dive deeper into its lore and world-building.
This book was very interesting to say the least. I felt like it was a Harry Potter rip-off, it does not have an original feel to it. I had this on my shelf for the longest time, I decided to give it a try since it was a book I was given as a gift a few years back. I just think you would have a better experience reading Harry Potter to be honest.
My kids loved this, so I read it too. Great immersive story, with a good twist that you don't see coming. The idea of the steampunk world and the 'animas' kin is interesting, and the detail is maintained throughout the whole book.
My son really liked this book but I wasn’t as excited. Really, this kid never goes to class, breaks all the rules, gets on the top sport team (even after breaking all the rules) and then turns out to be the hero? Lame. Would love a hero that has integrity and works hard.
I didn't really care for it. I did like the main character and his cadre of friends. It just seemed like it took too long for Bailey to find Taleth. I would like to have had more information about her.
I loved this book as a kid. It was honestly one of the books I can still remember. This book was and still is a big inspiration for my book that I'm writing.
I was pleased to receive Legacy of the Claw - Animas book 1 - in this series by C.R. Grey free for himest review. this book is great for 8-12 year olds, so my son and I read it together. The idea of an Animas bond linking humans to animals was very exciting and opened up my son's imagination. My son also commented that the setting, Fairmount Academy, was similar to Harry Potter. The field the students played was also kind of close with the Harry Potter series for my liking. These similarities seemed to harm originality because I found myself thinking about Potter while I was trying to focus on Bailey.
Bailey Walker was a determined character I couldn't help but admire in his will to find out why he had an Absence, or lack of bond with an animal. Bailey makes some true friends at his new school while also hoping that an instructor there, Tremelo, will help him awaken his Animas bond - or find his kin. Bailey discovers that his kin - the animal he is to bond with- could be extinct.
Bailey and his friends go through many struggles trying to discover their own issues while realizing they may be in the middle of much more serious issues than just an absence, or lack of animal kin. I liked to read about children my own age doing things for themselves and taking on mature, independent roles in their lives when I was 8-12, and I think many kids that age will appreciate the various character's independence and ability to think for themselves in this book.
I enjoyed the suspense and mysterious unfoldings in Legacy of the Claw, but I did find it hard to read this book out loud. The sentences did not have a smooth flow for reading out loud. I'd often have to pause and rethink / reread a sentence to make it make sense, which slowed down the reading out loud of the story.
I very much enjoyed the revelations at the end of the book. I suggest if you get bogged down while reading a slow spot, just know that the pace of the story picks up tremendously.

After reading earlier this year, a book aimed at a YA audience where humans had a close connection with animals in order to survive a race. I was curious about this debut from Grey about a world where humans have a bond with animals and the world is created around this. However there is one problem for this world and story the author is weaving, our protagonist Bailey doesn’t have one and it bit of a sore point with him because at his age he should have one already.
The story is mostly set at an Academy for the talented in the world and Bailey stand outs from the rest as a result as he is the first to be admit without one. The Academy was introduced very early on in the story and it gave me Harry Potter feels because there is bit of a coincidence with the story. First off there is a mysterious teacher Tremelo that the students don’t know what to make off but he has taken an interest in Bailey and vice versa. Another point for the Harry Potter case is the game called Scratch which is loosely based version of Capture the flag which is played in this world. The team have positions and these positions sound similar to ones from a certain game. I was seriously wondering if there would be one of those books where it has been heavily influenced by a particular book that you can’t help draw parallels between them .
As further I delve the story, I couldn’t get rid of the nagging feelings this was heavily influenced by Harry Potter. The ideal behind the story is unique but you get the feeling the characters could be almost Harry Potter versions in the this world. There is Hal is his best friend at the academy who reminds me of Ron but only weaker and smarter. Then there the girls Phi and Tori who make up there little group of First years determined to explore the mysteries with the Academy. The only saving points was the was a secondary story that was told at the same time as Bailey’s that introduced us to other characters that will play important roles and the fact I was enjoying the story being weaved.
Despite being a fantasy middle grade novel, Grey has a subtle message that is perfect for young people at this age. Don’t worry if you are different, it what makes you special and I love how Bailey doesn’t takes his parents wisdom to heart and tries to keep it a secret. He is determined to fit in but doesn’t’ realise that the being different is special and it going to take his new environment to show him what has been missing. This message made this book a little bit more special and made me less judgmental of the fact that I wished it was bit less Harry Potter influenced.
3.5 couples and I look forward to the next book in the series. Despite the Harry Potter feels to this story, I enjoyed this unique take on the relationship humans and animals and the twists towards the end of the novel. It is a great introductory novel for middle grade readers to the wonderful fantasy books out there. It light and not too heavy on the fantast elements and the prose is linear making the book easily to follow. My only other wish it was more upfront like other packaging companies have been with certain books. I had no clue going into this book that this had come from Lantern Lit and I would of like to be more aware that it had been.
I received the second in this series in exchange for a review, I read this one first so I wouldn't miss anything.
I really enjoyed this book and know it's one my daughter will adore. There are a lot of similarities to Harry Potter, even more so if you are looking for them. If you can't stand to make those connections, I wouldn't recommend this one. If you like those connections because it's like rereading a favorite, or if you don't care either way, I suggest this one for animal lovers.
We are introduced to Bailey Walker, an infant found near the woods and adopted by loving parents. Bailey grows up in a world where kin mean everything. Every person is connected and has a special bond with a species of animal, sometimes if the bond is strong enough, a specific animal itself. But poor Bailey feels like an outsider because he still hasn't awakened to his animas. Most kids are awakened before they're 10, Bailey is hoping he's merely a late waker as opposed to what would be worse, an absence. Those who never awake are rumored to go mad, but it's hard to know for sure since it's so rare. Then again, since the king died, there's a lot of questions that no one can answer.
I love the bonding with animals, animal lovers will enjoy seeing how each person shows some characteristics and traits of their animals. I enjoyed seeing how some bonds were stronger than others. I liked how they felt each other's emotions. There are some animal attacks, and descriptions of animals hurting each other and their pain, which might bother some. There was a little steampunk feel with talks of dirigibles and the carrion birds.
The characters are alright. I appreciated how Bailey wasn't willing to let his late waking affect his entire life. He tries to hide it from others, but doesn't let him stop living his life. I like how he has supportive loving parents at home. Phi was probably my favorite of his friends. Tori felt very flat, one dimensional brooding angry girl. Hal was the classic dependable good friend. At first I was somewhat bothered how... medicated Tremelo was most of the time. I get he's supposed to be odd and different, but since this is for middle school, maybe something other than substance abuse? Or maybe kids won't even make that connection. Viviana was harsh. I wish there was a little more to what happened to her. She seemed so angry so fast and went so extreme. She's definitely a good villain, very evil. There was a lot of action and plot in this one. I'm hoping as the series progresses we will get more character development.
This book felt like the type of series that explain lots through action and dialogue in the first book. There might be some more development, but I don't expect to go too deep since the age this is intended for. I'm bummed we don't get to see some of when Viviana lives in the castle and the King is alive, but maybe we will learn more about that time later. The book was fast moving with reasonable chapters. There was a sketch of an animal at the beginning of each chapter, but no pictures throughout the writing. There were some twists and turns, and I had an inkling of what was coming, but there was something I didn't expect. There was no language, or romance. My daughter is now reading the first one and I am continuing on to the second.
