At the end I enjoyed it most when Bobbi stated: remember rules are meant to be broken.

I did enjoy this one, as I always do with Bobbi Brown's books but this one was aimed more for younger teens and there is the last section dedicated to those in their early twenties. I didn't learn that much because I do read a lot of beauty books but I keep up because I do always learn a couple new things. I mean I also picked this up because Hilary Duff wrote the forward in the edition I got and I idolized Hilary when I was younger. As always the photographs are extremely pretty and I will continue to read all of Bobbi Brown's books in the future.

Bobbi Brown is an American makeup artist and entrepreneur with a self-branded cosmetics line (I am particularly a fan of her gel eyeliner). Her 2010 beauty book Beauty Rules is aimed largely at tweens and teens and reads like a magazine aimed at this age group, with general, big sisterly advice on grooming, hygiene, skincare, diet, makeup, etc. There are hundreds of photos of different tween and teen girls in the book (many are the classic before-and-after set seen in teen magazines) and some general advice on makeup technique, but not really a lot of in-depth, step-by-step tutorials. I imagine people buy books like this more for the pictures than for detailed advice.

My statistics:
Book 195 for 2025
Book 2121 cumulatively

I am a huge fan of Bobbi Brown and I believe that anyone really serious about makeup knows who she is and what she does. I was extremely excited to read her new book, Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules: Fabulous Looks, Beauty Essentials, and Life Lessons, especially because it was aimed at teens.

This book was such an inspiration and a big help. Bobbi first talks about her rules for life, recommendations for when to start wearing makeup, and also gives tips on eating and exercising. All of these sections/chapters were very sweet and informative. Sweet because she really encourages being yourself and just being comfortable with yourself. She doesn't push makeup on you, but she wants girls to make the decision for themselves. Bobbi Brown comes off very real and extremely nice in this book.

Of course the makeup section was my favorite. She breaks it down for skin, eyes, lips, cheeks, and overall makeovers. The pictures are so beautiful and it makes it easy to try to replicate the looks. There aren't that many tutorials for looks though. It's more of a look and do type thing. She also has recommendations for certain eye colors, lip colors, ect. Her tips are extremely helpful, even though some are very basic.

I want to also note that while this book is helpful, its hard to not want Bobbi's makeup. Her makeup is not very affordable for the teens and young women that this book is aimed towards though. She doesn't really recommend any affordable makeup either.

Overall this was a great book for tweens, teens, and young women. I definitely recommend it.

A little too many pictures, but otherwise pretty good. I just wish there was more content and tips instead of random photos.

This book did nothing for me and actually offended me.

There was a section in here about tattoos and piercings. I agree, waiting until you're older to get one is usually a good decision, but that was about all I agreed with.

Apparently, she wouldn't hire someone with a tongue piercing. Or if they were TRULY WORTHY, she'd ask them to remove it.
I'm not a fan of tongue piercings either, but I wouldn't consider someone an "automatic no" over something like that.
It's just so unnecessary and judgemental.

Thumbs down for trying to tell anyone not to express themselves because of your personal belief.

To each their own, Bobbi Brown.

By the way, I am also a mother. That excuse is getting a little old, don't you think?

Makeup genius and business woman, Bobbi Brown, is one person we'd love to learn a thing or two from. Bibbi Brown has been through it all from being a makeup artist to creating her own cosmetics company. This is essentially the beauty bible for teens and those in their 20s where Bobbi Brown will share all her tips from actual makeup application to self-esteem boosters and techniques for looking, feeling and being your best. And don't forget: Rules are meant to be broken.

I vaguely remember skimming through this book as a teen. But I was more interested in vampires, soul mates and love stories. I didn't care about makeup cause I thought.. Never-mind what I thought. I wish I did read through it. I know I could have used a lot of the advice that was written here. I love my mum but she wasn't an advice giver. I was the middle child and she had a ton of other things to do. I remember my girlfriends shaving and experimenting with make up. I remember being jealous and then deciding to be a tomboy. I don't hate the person I turned out to be. I did learn everything I needed to eventually. This is a great book to give your teenage niece or nephew. It has good advice and encourages you in a very heart warming way. I love Bobbi's make up. I have eczema prone skin so not all products work for me but I find I can use a lot of hers. Thanks!

This might be a good "beauty" primer for young girls. A lot of the info is basic, but solid nevertheless. I do think a large portion of the book is pictures without a lot of guidance to recreate, and I didn't really like the section about boys. (She includes a section that I guess if for moms, girlfriends, or sisters to help out their guys. That's not such a big deal, but I don't like that she calls everything "gross habits" before giving you a way to adjust it. I just think that's a little derogatory and uncalled for.) Otherwise, an alright book.

I had read two other Bobbi Brown's makeup books: Makeup Manual, and Eveything Eyes. I like the way Bobbi Brown introduces makeup to her readers, offer specific information - easy for beginners (includes me). Beauty Rules is another book either about makeup or healthy lifestyle. Bobbi humbly shared her opinion about beauty, be yourself, be simple and be gorgous at the same time. Embrace everything about your beauty no matter how you look. I love the way Bobbi sent her message thorough the book.

Los libros de Bobbi Brown tienen una diversidad sorprendente de modelos para la época. Me gusta que se acerca a la belleza de manera bastante holística, aunque este en concreto es para un lector más joven que yo.

I think this one is appropriate for younger people interested in general makeup guidelines but Bobbi has better manuals that anyone who wants to learn about makeup should read instead.

If you've got a little bit of beauty knowledge you'll not learn a thing, and even might roll your eyes at some of the rigid advice but sometimes a little girl lost needs the voice of certainty. I wish I had a friend like Bobbi Brown when I was much younger so this book has accomplished it's mission 100% as far as Im concerned. I dont think though that I would have connected with this book enough to hear it's valuable advice partly because of it's black and white perspective and I'm sure there are plenty of girls this book just doesn't speak to out there. The young girls who need this guidance most smell authoritative attitudes a mile away and shut off to them. So basically 3 stars for the effort and caring but 2 lost for maybe coming too much from the mother's voice and not enough of that of a friend.

Well, I want to Thank Bobbi for sharing her secrets with us. Actually this is what I wanted to know a fresh, natural and simple looking make up without looking like a hello-people-i-want-to-get-married look that we have here in Syria ! Bobbi's voice in the book is great and instructing and what i am thankful for is that it is articulated too.
I learned to put a simple Eyeliner that should be put outside the eye not inside to look like a punched woman ,and I have noticed too mom is being impressed by my new interest also, the book gives you great pieces of advice on teen and twenties about being strong and natural.

This book is great for people like me. I love fashion and beauty and this book gave me tons of insite into the world I look at as glamourous. It showed me how to handle makeup and to carry myself confidently. This book also talks about beauty on the inside as well as on the outside. Healthiness and confidence are key to real beauty. "Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules" is a great book and I will gladly keep it on my bookshelf!

Being the queen of natural makeup looks, Bobbi Brown certainly didn't leave that concept out. However, I would have greatly appreciated if she included more night-time, perhaps dramatic makeup looks. Even so, this book was lovely; managing to include not just makeup application tips, but also some beauty and skin care advice in addition to some life lessons as well. Very good read, especially for the teenage girl.

I immediately found the book to be judgmental and rude. Also, too many gender role comments.

Her entry on piercings and tattoos: "anyone who comes to see me for an interview with something in her or his tongue is an instant no... If you have to pierce something, at least do it in a place most people don't see."

Also, quotes like this - "all girls, no matter how old they are, love to play with makeup and to dress up. It's just part of our DNA." No, no it's not.

I LOVED this book. It taught me a ton about makeup (knowing that I need all the help I can get in that category) and made me feel great about myself at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for info about makeup and a feel-good book that will most definitely help girls get through their teens. Awesome. Five stars!

It appeared to be like a life-style manual for teenagers, rather than a beauty rules, tbh :( To make it clear, there are a lot of BB products that I like, their shimmer brick, gel eyeliner etc. - and I do like their beauty manual. But this Beauty Rules? 10 step process mix-up? Yellow foundation - OH MY GOSH!
Really, I cannot explain enough how bad this book is. Sorry :(

Cute, how-to book that also focuses on teaching young girls to embrace what makes them unique and showcase their natural beauty. Geared towards a younger audience than me, but instill enjoyed it and picked up some tips. Also gained respect for Bobbi Brown, the makeup artist, as this is the first book of hers that I've read.

This was, I guess, my quickest read. I was more fascinated by the pictures, as the content sounded all cliched familiar. That's all I have to say about this book. I so wish they had given a few Bobbi Brown cosmetics along with the book (as a reward for successfully sailing through the gyan! :P )

i spent a lot of time looking through this book when i was younger and i’m pretty sure i memorized everything. the information and helpful tips about beauty, skincare, makeup, self-love, and self-confidence played a crucial role in my tween/teen years. maybe i should try reading it again now that i’m a bit older...

I loved this book because it gave begginers like me a chance to see how to take care of ourselves and do a good job of putting on make up! It has a lot deeper meaning than what you would think, and I really enjoyed it.

This book was such a fun read! All of the models in the book were real life teenagers which made the book relatable! It was fun to read and it taught me a lot about the application of makeup. Hilary Diff wrote the introduction and it was fun to hear from her!

Great for tweens/teens/young adults interested in makeup. The book focuses on natural looks that are easily to do. It's especially great that they don't use professional models but real girls and women in the photos. It gives a more realistic expectation of what makeup can do.
