This is my favorite Joel Osteen book that I have read so far.

Joes Osteen gives some great advice on succeeding in life. This would be an excellent book for college students.

Now, I wish I could get my 18 year old son to read this.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how honest and straight forward Joel Osteen can be. I felt so inspired by reading his advice, which really made sense. I think everyone needs to read this to see how they can become a much better person within themselves and for God.
A Great and Quick Read

You Can You Will is a book. It has a cover, it has pages, it has words on those pages. Sorry, I just have to reassure myself here that I’m reading a book, because when I get to actually processing the words, I stop being so sure. I could fall back on the easy explanation that it’s more a sermon put to paper, which is clearly true, but there must a limit on leeway given.

The Message

If you have a big vision, God will not only do what you're dreaming about, He will do more than you can ask or think.

You Can You Will is a self-help book with suggested principles for bettering yourself (be positive, strive for excellence, visualisations), with a half twist of scripture validating those principles. And look, it is all pretty inoffensive, and if it has been done 100 times before (even by Osteen), why not try your luck the 101st time.

My issue is that Osteen is lazy. This book is so poorly proofread that I actually have to call out his agents Dupree Miller & Associates and his publishers FaithWords, because, wow, you really didn’t require Osteen to do any checking of his sources at all. Or even list them. Or even distinguish between what are factual retellings and what are parables. Here are some examples of the numerous imprecise statements:

I've read there are six thousand stars in the Eastern sky where he was. It's not a coincidence that there are six thousand promises in the scripture.

I read that the wealthiest places on earth are not the oil fields of the Middle East or the diamond mines of South Africa. The wealthiest places are cemeteries.

I heard about this man who fell into a pit.

It's like this country grandfather I heard about who took his grandson to town on a donkey.

Studies show 50 percent of high school graduates never read another entire book.

Studies tell us that the average person only uses 11 percent of the brain.

Some are statements of “fact”. Some are meant to be illustrative stories. Some are combinations of the two. However, you have to work it out which is which from the contextual clues. For the statements of fact, they also suffer from the issue of being uncited. There are no studies about 50 percent non-readers, nor any that show we use only 11 percent of our brains. Osteen didn’t cite the information, his agents didn’t check, his publishers didn’t check and now we have these dubious statements underpinning Osteen’s principles.

As an example where it borders on deceitful, Osteen writes with (apparent) wild eyed amazement about a man who once donated 100 million dollars to a university, even though this happens quite often and is similarly-often tied to specific purposes. Who knows which donation Osteen means because, once again, he provides no detail and actually credits God for the donation. There’s also a story about a nurse that systematically asks people their biggest regrets, which seems unlikely, unethical and uncited, and it’s one that depends on being true to make its point. Yet, Osteen expects us to take the wisdom offered “on faith”.

In terms of the religious aspect, I’m not going to debate Osteen’s Biblical interpretation of the passages he refers to, but his statement that Paul wrote over half the New Testament while in prison isn’t even supported by the traditional view.

The Messenger

Keep honoring God, being your best, thanking Him that it's on the way, God will supersize whatever you're believing for.

Osteen was “born on third.” When you read this self-help book, I would note the author’s big step up was having to take over from his father as leader of a megachurch. His youth was spent on the mean streets… …driving his teammate to practice in a car his grandfather gifted him.

Osteen lets us know about the time he had to chase the rubbish that fell out of his car. The times he had to wipe down the sealed five-gallon water containers he had in his home. Once, he drove home because he didn’t want to be seen in public ungroomed and ill-dressed. For him, a clever allusion is to headwinds when flying from Houston to Los Angeles. He is incredulous as to how clean Disneyland is. It’s an amazing story to Osteen when his billion-dollar friend does work for a $5 tip.

However, if Osteen feels you’re taking him for a ride, like his teammate, then he’ll cut you straight-off. Same with a parishioner asking for rent money every month. Osteen is at pains to let us know of his generosity before he reaches a point where he feels he can do no more. So, he does no more. Cold turkey and all that. Osteen suggests we avoid high maintenance people or those that might be a drag. He even hints at being pro-divorce over it, which is progressive in a somewhat awful way, I guess.

I am sure Osteen works hard, with his sermons, podcasts and video-editing, etc etc, but working hard is not interesting or praiseworthy. We've all done it or are currently doing it. For Osteen, working hard brings him outsize rewards, such as a $US40 million net worth. So, to me, we have his dubious perspective underpinning his principles of "self-help."

The publication of this “book” is evidence of how easy Osteen has it. This is his eleventh go at it, yet no one seems to have pulled him aside and introduced him to the wonders of endnoting.

Anyway, it’s a book, I think.

It's been said by some of my favorite preachers that sometimes you have to "eat the meat and spit out the bones." You Can You Will is meaty enough for my taste for the first few chapters, and then Osteen begins talking about excellence, which is where he lost me. I'm certainly in favor of doing all things to the best of your ability, but the idea that God only uses people who strive for excellence is very off-putting and wrong, especially to this reader who has struggled off and on with depression and bipolar disorder. I don't always strive for excellence because I don't naturally have the motivation at all times. And yet I still find that God is using me, that He's blessing me and the efforts I do contribute, that He's motivating me to rise to the occasion. I think it's at these weakest moments that I can feel Him using me the most. Osteen uses the example of David (among others) to make his point regarding excellence, detailing how David practice and hones his slingshot skills out in the field daily so that when the time came, he would be ready to answer God's call. I have no doubt that David was fine with a slingshot and that he prided himself on his accuracy, but I doubt that his motivation was that he would someday be used by God in his ability. Perhaps God placed the desire to use and develop his slingshot skills in David's heart, but David was not responsible for having that desire. He did what he felt led to do, and I think a better use of this chapter would be to seek the Holy Spirit's power in our lives to achieve excellence in the things we genuinely desire to do. I don't entirely disagree with Osteen's point; it's just way too simplified and comes across as rather legalistic. We must always looks our best, present ourselves perfectly, keep clean homes and workspaces, etc., because "we are representing God, and only the highest standards of excellence are acceptable." Yeah, try ministering to inner-city gang members in a three-piece tailored suit and see where that gets you. Appearance isn't everything, and some of the cleanest, nicest-looking, most attractive people I know are AWFUL people. Osteen even goes so far as recommending ladies take their credit cards to Victoria's Secret and get themselves a new wardrobe. I have problems with a pastor counseling people to go into debt just so their appearance will be pleasing to others. As Suze Orman, Dave Ramsay, and others have said, America has a debt problem because we spend money we don't have to buy things we don't want in order to impress people we don't even like. For this chapter especially, Osteen's priorities are out of order. I recommend just going with the idea of doing your best and skipping this particular chapter entirely. The rest of the book is pretty empowering, and Osteen later represents that his heart is in the right place when one of his tips is to always be looking for ways to bless someone else. Understand, I didn't hate this book. I rather liked it quite a bit. It was great to read a motivating book that's largely free of all the cynical trappings of the modern evangelical approach and message. And Osteen is much maligned by evangelicals, which makes me enjoy him all the more. When people use the term "false prophet" to describe anybody who's preaching good news, I instantly gravitate toward them. I am a recovering cynic/pessimist. I need more optimism like this in my life. I just can't unabashedly stand behind everything Osteen says in this book. Besides, you have to get a little worried about yourself if you blindly agree with EVERYTHING one pastor says. Taken to the extreme, that's how cults are formed.

YOU CAN, YOU WILL by Joel Osteen is a practical guide in eight steps how be the successful person you are meant to be, that God has ordained you to be.

1. Dare to dream big-do not dream something easily attainable. Dream something bigger than even in your wildest dreams you may not conceive of happening right away. Joel provides the example of one of his bigger dreams/vision. From being inside the small Lakewood Community church his father built, to dreaming of a bigger building, one that was already built, that could hold even more members than he could have ever imagined.
2. Focus on your course and your goals. As long as you are following God’s word and are learning and doing the right things on the path to your dreams, with faith God will open doors that were closed to you.
3. Control your thoughts and attitude. Think positive. When you are constantly thinking negatively, negative things surround you. Change your way of thinking, the more you are grateful for and the more positive your attitude is, the right things will start happening for you. Negativity breeds negativity. Wake up in the morning and declare that you woke up to see a Monday morning and although your day is going to be busy, it will be a great one. Count your blessings. The things you are complaining or thinking negatively about, someone else would gladly take your position or place if given the opportunity to appreciate the gifts in your life.
4. Expect nothing but good things to come your way. This is where you need to pray and let it go. Do not second guess or doubt what God can do. Because when you expect good, good things will happen for you.
5. Most importantly we are guilty of losing our passion for things that once made us excited. Like that new job, now it is old, and that excitement you once had is gone. You are just going through the motions. Do not lose your passion. When the passion starts to fizzle in something, find new ways to improve on it or find something else that will spark that passion within you again.
6. Do your best. Set high standards for yourself.
7. Continue to improve. It is part of the growth process. No matter how old you are there is always room for you to improve and learn more.
8. Invest yourself in others. If you see someone that needs to be lifted, be that person to offer a encouraging word. If you see someone in need of help, help them if you are able. When you invest in others, God sees that and will reward you. DO NOT have the attitude that oh if I help this person or that person God is going to reward me. Just know that God is watching the things you do. Do things out of the kindness of your heart and not with any expectations.

You Can, You Will by Joel Osteen is more of a common sense guide that many of us fail to remember when we are on a journey to be more successful. With these eight key principles, you are sure to tap into the YOU, that God expects you to be. God did not put you on this earth to just get through life. He put you here for you to LIVE life to the fullest. Remember You Can, You Will be the best YOU there is.

I was afraid coming into this that it would be the same as the other book of his that I read. I read Every Day a Friday in August, so I was going to wait a long time before I read another one so it wouldn’t seem so fresh. Some of the same ideas and phrases were mentioned so I fear there’s some overlap in his books. How to be happier was a bit like this one about being successful.

I like that he said we have what it takes to win, that too often we listen to negativity and become discouraged by doubts and fears and talk ourselves out of our best.

"Studies show that we move toward what we consistently see." Keep a symbol of what you want in front of you.

Dream big dreams, not things you can accomplish on your own.

If you don't envision something, it won't happen. Don't say "I can't imagine something" because then it won't happen.

I've read one other book of Joel's and I like how he interprets the bible and breaks things down in an easily understood way and applies it to life now. Such as God telling Abraham he'd be the father of many nations and that he would have as many descendants as there were stars in the sky. And that he would have as many relatives as grains of sand on the beach. Joel said God gave him a picture knowing there would be times of doubt and when Abraham looked at the signs he would have faith.

I loved that he said people will try to control you, but they're the ones who breathed life into you; they didn't equip or empower you. That is such a powerful, eye-opening message. Other people don't get to decide who we are or put limitations on us, because it's not their place. I realized people have no authority or right to influence me and that's groundbreaking.

He told us to search our heart every morning, that when we do that we're being true to ourselves and who God wanted us to be. I've never had an issue with doing what people wanted me to do; I always make myself happy and I want to do what I want to do, as far as big life decisions like school and career. But I've always worried about what people think of me, I was always worried about what I wear and what I say and how people will judge it. It's reassuring to hear that God wants us to do our own thing.

I liked the message that we're supposed to be the original, unique person God wants us to be. If you change for other people then you lose your uniqueness and you lessen the favors in your life. Don't listen to the negativity and and don't get upset about negative things said about you. Love the praise of God more than that of people. If you do what other people want you to do, you won't get to where you're supposed to be. Then they'll see for themselves that you made it one day.

When you're going to be around people who drag you down, those you have to be around and can't get away from, you have to lift yourself up beforehand and get encouraged. Don't go with your guard down or stressed out about traffic, etc. Give praise, be encouraged and fill up your spirit.

Expect favor and increase and good breaks every day, and it will happen. If you expect to get little and that things won't get better, that's what will happen. Say something good is going to happen every morning.

Keep a good attitude. Don't wait to be happy when the situation changes; be happy while God is changing the situation. Have a good attitude and don't think about what you don't have. It's how you respond to what happens that determines whether you're happy. You have to decide to be happy no matter what happens before you ever leave the house.

"If your happiness is based on everything going your way and everybody treating you right, you will be frustrated."

It was encouraging to read that a commitment to excellence is a way to success. You show up on time, giving your best and taking pride in your work, even when no one is watching. You do more than you have to and go the extra mile.

Do the right thing even for the small things, like picking up something you knocked over and returning an item you don't want where you got it. "I don't want something small to keep God from releasing something big into my life." Strive for excellence in things like how you treat people, present yourself and develop new skills.

Always keep learning. Winners never stop. Improve your skills. Maybe get mentors and learn from people who know more than you. Have the goal every day to grow and learn something new.

It was a bit odd to have him say robes are ugly and to take a credit card and go shopping at Victoria's Secret. It's weird to have a pastor touch on such a subject and tell us to buy lingerie. It was funny how he incorporated his wife's name, but it was uncomfortable to be told what to wear, especially clothes of that nature.

If you keep bringing up the negativity of your past, whether it's from the day before or years ago, you'll ruin your future. Just because you had a bad past doesn't mean you have to have a bad future.
Don't settle for less, become bitter and pity yourself, or blame others. Know your best days are ahead of you.

Let go of the wrongs done to you, mistakes you've made, or disappointments from the day before. Start each day anew. Don't carry around that baggage.

Focus on the things you can change and don't dwell on those you can't, like people offending and mistreating you. Let things go and move forward.

If you have a victim mentality and hold onto all your wrongs, you'll ruin opportunities you will have.

Tell your heart to dream and believe again.

There was a lot about jobs in the office, especially in the last 2 chapters, like those are the only jobs you can have. I get tired of reading about office jobs in books. Also, everyone assumes you already have a job and that you can get by; no one ever considers my situation.

I noticed that in the chapters there tended be a repeat of the same phrases, to the point that I thought I had already read a passage because it sounded so similar. I would have liked some other phrases and for things to be said differently each time.

There was a lot to learn, things I never would have thought of and I see the ways in which I’ve been doing things wrong, like not doing things enthusiastically, like the dishes and cleaning. It’s honoring God when we take pride in all our work and help others. A big lesson was that when we help others we might not get a thank-you, but we’re not after praise from people. We’ll get God’s praise and we’ll be rewarded for everything we do that goes unpraised and unrecognized.

He always states the right thing to do, but I like how he usually gives an example of where he had gone wrong with that in the past and what he learned, like letting people use him. He knows he isn’t perfect and it’s so relatable that he struggles with the same things we do. It makes him relatable.

"Life is like a car, you have a forward gear and a reverse gear. You decide which way you want to go." (Joel Osteen, You Can You Will)

YOU CAN YOU WILL be victorious, be out of debt, have healthly relationships, be prosperous, be promoted at work, succeed...You Can You Will.

Joel Osteen will get all the cobwebs of negative thinking off your life. Negative thinking will not stick around when you are around Joel Osteen. I listened the audio version of this book and the author is speaking on it. Waves of blessing and refreshing will come over you as you listen to this book. You will be released to become all God created you to be. As Joel Osteen says, "there are seeds of greatness on the inside of you." The author will teach you how to fan the passion that is inside you and to remove the blockages that are hindering your greatness.

Not a bad book, but nothing mind-blowingly new here. Also, about 10% made me want to punch him. Yes I need to strive for excellence, but not always at the expense of comfort. I don't need to throw out my old bathrobe and shimmy into some slinky lingerie in order to be my best and honor God. Sorry if you think it's ugly, but that's on you. Also, I don't need to charge a bunch of stuff to my credit cards so my house can be cleaner or my clothes more stylish. Sorry. I'm working to get out of debt. Out of one side of his mouth he says use what you have to best of your ability and then he tells us to pick up our cards to go buy fancy pjs. Sorry - which is it?

I get all his points - and most of them are good. I just don't feel like there is much depth here.

Which is sad.

Osteen has a solid reputation for feeding one's spirit on empty and getting it back to where it's needed. Appreciating the fact that his latest message was free via audio version, I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson he conveyed. The eight steps and solid advice provided was just what the doctor ordered for anyone trying to make breakthroughs in 2015.

Some of the best highlights in this book are enclosed in chapter three. Infact, I went back and replayed this chapter at least three times. We can always count on this man, as Dr Phil would say, to always assist us with getting excited about our life in general and every good thing it has to offer.

First book I’ve ever read by Joel Osteen. And it will be a book I keep coming back to. One of the best books I’ve read. No fluff here, everything is super practical and will inspire you, motivate you and make you a better person in all areas of your life. It will awaken something deep inside of you that you might have thought you lost; your life, your passion, love, strength, drive, your dreams and so on. Feeling down? Or unhappy? Do things seem to never work out? Have a job you hate? Quick to anger, slow to love? This book will help put things into perspective and allow you to wake up and become truly alive again. It will give you the tools that God has already put inside of you to go after whatever it is you want in life and accomplish it. We’re not perfect, we’ll make mistakes and have setbacks. But a setback is just a set-up for a comeback. The best is yet to come. Choose to live by these principles and increase the quality of your life. It’s up to you. You can, you will.

√ You Have Seeds of Greatness in You!

This book is primarily a book of encouragement, not a book of theology. The author lists 8 specific traits that sincere Christians should exhibit if they want to achieve all that God has in store for them. These benefits come about because God favors his children, and wants them to achieve greatness, even here on Earth.

The winner is exhorted to remember these 8 qualities:

♦ Keep Your Vision in Front of You
♦ Run Your Race
♦ Expect Good Things
♦ Have a Positive Mind Set
♦ Commit to Excellence
♦ Keep Growing
♦ Serve Others
♦ Stay Passionate

YOU CAN YOU WILL is fill of encouraging anecdotes and actual stories from friends of the author. They often relate to having a positive attitude, and not becoming discouraged. This positive mindset is a recurring theme through the book--face problems with a can-do attitude and avoid victim-hood thinking at all costs.

A winner should not give in to negative thoughts, and even not associate with those who are negative influences. Avoid those negative anchors, because they are likely impeding your drive to achieving great things.

The classical puritan work ethic is also a theme of this book, although not called out by name. The Christian winner should do MORE than is necessary--MORE than required by their employer: "When you're a person of excellence, you do more than necessary. You don't just meet the minimum requirements."

The "Spirit of Excellent" can manifest itself in many ways. Pastor Joel makes it a point to keep the church grounds clean. Why send the wrong message, since believers "represent god, and He is not sloppy. God is not run-down. God is not second class."

YOU CAN YOU WILL is bound to be a subject of controversy. The theme of the book focuses mostly on what a Christian can achieve in this world--what wonderful things one can do in this world. The idea of exactly what type of "Success" God wants for believers is assumed by the author. It is the same type of success that everyone wants--job, money, family, position, etc.

The controversial portions of this book may mask the many good ideas that believers should follow. For example, Pastor Joel encourages the reader in stewardship, using your abilities to the maximum, being diligent and hardworking, and not blaming others. Every Christian can agree that these are solid Biblical principles, with roots in the Protestant Reformation.

YOU CAN YOU WILL is an inspirational book aimed at believers who see God's favor in their life. These Christians want to take specific action, and this book will definitely light that fire.

For a contrasting perspective on the Christian life and Success, see Charles Stanley, "Success, God's Way."

Good, uplifting book.

If you are not familiar with Osteen's books they are essentially Christian Motivational books. Osteen is noted for his postitive, up beat persona and his skill for relating biblical principles to motivate people and be more greatful for what they have and what God intends you to have.

While I think Joel Osteen's books are very motivating and Christian friendly, they are not without fault.

The biggest issues I have with this book (and others of his) is there is almost no mention of confessing sins and not enough praise of God. Also, there is some vaildity in the "presperity Gospel" criticism that have been connected to Mr. Osteen. Most of this book focuses on what you can get from God, not what you can do to praise God.

A good point with this book is that it is basically a condensed version of his other books. Most of his other books rehash everything he talked about in the first book. This one takes most of the major concepts of his other books, drills them down to a digestable read that can be done in an afternoon.

I think there is a lot of good content in this book for those who not read any of Mr. Osteen's books but if you have you are likely to be reading all the same stuff from his other boooks. So, I highly recommend this book as a starter book for those who have not read any of the others but can't recommend this to anyone who has read his other books.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
As always Joel writes books that encourage , give us hope and helps us strive for excellence. With this book as his others the theme is always positive and uplifting. He is a great motivator and champion for God.
In the book he gives you eight steps to help you become more focused and grow as you achieve what you are called for.
Keep your vision in front of you
Run your race
Expect good things
Have a positive mind set
Commit to excellence
Keep growing
Serve others
Stay passionate
These steps are great and help you by following a guide to reach your goal. Each one is attainable by prayer and determination. I love his positive attitude which is infectious. Don't we all want to be better people? Isn't it easier to stay positive when you have others to stand beside you?
Thank you Joel for another excellent book in practical everyday language that helps us to be His hands and Feet.

Please read this book today! If you have to order it, start reading it as soon as you receive it. This book won't let you down, and neither will I! You have to realize that with God, You Can, You Will. You!
"You have a responsibility not only to God, not only to your family, but also to yourself to develop what he's put in you. If you're in sales, human resources, auto mechanics, or health care, you can always expand your knowledge and improve your skills. Read books to learn how to communicate, work as a team member, or lead more effectively." (Just one of the passages that came up when I opened the book to include something)
For those of you that just read this review, you were meant to read that quote and you are meant to read this book.
You haven't come by this book by accident.
God has a reason for you in this life and he wants you to become a winner!

Joel Osteen offers his readers a message of hope and determination in "You Can You Will." For anyone who hasn't read - or heard of - Joel Osteen, he is a best-selling author and evangelist known for his uplifting reassurances that you are loved and protected by God. "You Can You Will" is the latest in a long line of written messages. This one, listing eight positive qualities for individuals, focuses on the belief that God created his believers to be successful, to accomplish their goals and to leave a mark on the world. In other words, believe in yourself because God believes in you.

(Say it with an accent)...You can, You will. There's southern joy in Joel's voice. Sometimes I just need to fill my cup, hear some positive affirmations, light-hearted stories, a little something to lift me up. This audiobook did just that. It was short & sweet and had me laughing out loud at its old school "self-help" style. Power of thought, people! Read on.
