A brand-new series of school stories from the world of Ever After High! Duchess Swan and Lizzie Hearts are roommates at Ever After High. While their personalities are very different, they bond over not quite fitting in with the other Royals. Lizzie, however, has one thing that Duchess doesn't: a happily-ever-after at the end of her story. While Lizzie and the other princesses train for the day when they will rule their kingdoms, Duchess is torn between her role as the perfect, dutiful princess and her rebellious ambition to be a queen. When both girls are selected to attend General Villainy class, Duchess sees an opportunity to be a rebel while following the rules. But can she play a prank on her roomie to ace the class? Find out if Duchess' desire to change her destiny will make her Ever After High's Next Top Villain!
Suzanne Selfors lives on an island near Seattle where it rains all the time, which is why she tends to write about cloudy, moss-covered, green places. She's married, has two kids, and writes full time. Her favorite writers are Kurt Vonnegut, Charles Dickens, and most especially, Roald Dahl.
I loved this book and I wasn't disappointed! I love the Ever After High series because of the different twists and turns. The characters are amazing and I found that Daring Charming is really funny in this. The plot is very different compared to the other Ever After High books. This is another series with the Ever After High characters.
There is a show for this series and I watch it. It's from the creators of Monster High and I loved that too. The plot is so different and I love how all the characters have their destiny written for them. Suzanne Selfors did a good job with the writing because it was short and sweet! Her writing gets right to the point and it is interesting.
When I finished this book, I was shocked at how fast-paced it was. This book is very short but very interesting.
If you haven't heard of Ever After High, it is about the daughters and sons of fairy tale characters. The school is divided into Royals and Rebels. All these people have to go to the school Ever After High so they can learn and prepare for their destiny. Each of their destinies are the ones that their parents were in. For example, Apple White, daughter of Snow White, has the destiny of her mother's story.
But the huge plot twist is the fact that Raven Queen, daughter of the Evil Queen, does not want to follow her destiny. She is nice and she does not want to be the evil girl that everybody is scared about. I really like this because it has fairy tales.
This book is told in third person following the character Duchess Swan, who is one of the side characters in Ever After High. It was really interesting to read from her side of the story because we got to know her more.
I really like this book and I would recommend it to any fairy tale lovers! I rate this five stars and I can't wait to read more in this series!
This is the start of a new trilogy after Shannon Hale’s original one. Hale’s books were really good, and this mostly lives up to them. This volume focuses on Duchess Swan, roommate of Lizzie Hearts. Duchess is destined to be cursed to live as a swan forever, but she has an opportunity to change that destiny by becoming a villain. The way this plays out is creative and unpredictable. The characters are very well developed, and the writing style is fun.

A book that you can relate to very much. Duchess and Lizzie, best friends and roommates, go to the same school and get into the same competition. Duchess has to get an A and a treasure from an old chest, which only one student (the winner) can achieve those. In order to win, they have to make the most evil thing happen in school, the more evil the better. But Duchess has to ruin everyone's plan in order to win, including her friends. Will the two break, or make up?
Another home run for the Ever After High series! This adorable world is just my cup of tea.
Although this spin-off series was penned by a different author, I still enjoyed myself. These school stories focus on the side characters (which I love) rather than the principle characters to offer a different perspective. Once again, whoever is in charge of manufacturing the copies of these books deserves a medal. The hardcover design is impeccable with beautiful fonts, gold lettering, and it even spells out "Ever After High" on the pages.
This was a wonderful installment that we were able to see Ever After High from the lavender eyes of Duchess Swan. She is the daughter of the Swan Princess who has the ability to transform into her namesake and is part of the Royals side. She is portrayed as a semi-antagonist in the prequels and television show, but here she was sweet and conflicted towards her destiny. Her Happy Ever After is not guaranteed and she may end up as a swan permanently. This book changed my opinion towards her and I loved her delicate flirtations towards Sparrow Hood.
Duchess' roommate, Lizzie Hearts, was just as charming as I remember. Lizzie is the daughter of the Red Queen and hails from Wonderland. She is also a Royal who wishes to follow in her mother's footsteps, but wishes to have more control over her temper. Her special talent was being able to create anything using a deck of cards. I loved that she spoke in Riddlish and had an adorable hedgehog named Shuffle. Isn't that the cutest name for a Wonderland pet? She provided a lovely foil to Duchess' anal-retentive nature with a natural disposition towards chaos.
Small shout out to Ginger Breadhouse for being a cute character that proves just because you come from a villainous family doesn't mean you can't make delicious snacks. Her mother may have tried to eat Hansel and Gretel but her daughter can make a mean "cinnamon troll".
Finally, Sparrow Hood is one of the funniest character in the EAH universe. His zingers are hilarious. He is the son of Robin Hood and his band's name is the Merry Men. The amount of puns and clever references in this series are great. He's one of my favorite male characters in this series. I'm happy he was a more prominent role instead of just comic relief.
Of course I have to mention Blondie Lockes whenever I have an Ever After High review. She is my namesake and has the prettiest dress. She was a total gossipmonger in this story and rather annoying. All I can say is that she is determined to get that story. Ever After High is so much fun and the atmosphere is magical. Make a reminder on your MirrorPhone and check out this series today!
The main character (and POV) is Duchess Swan. Before this point Duchess wasn't exactly nice. In fact, I found her to be downright mean.
That's why it is hard to rate this book. Before this point, it was too easy to just think of Duchess as a bully. But now I'm confused. Because the Duchess in Next Top Villain is different than the Duchess from the Shannon Hale books.
Not as prone to gleeful puns as the Shannon Hale set. And-- interestingly-- more serious in tone. You look at the cover and think FLUFFY GIRL BOOK, and then the story is about a character considering whether to betray and hurt her friends in the hope of winning herself a happy ending.
Dude, I have to stop thinking "girl book" means "fluffy". Sexism much?
Overall, I didn't enjoy these as much as the first trilogy, but it's still a really interesting premise and I love all the characters. Duchess, my angry angel, you are queen of MY heart forever.
I never really liked Duchess that much, but this story made me see her in a different light. I completely relate to her wanting to be perfect, and so I understood her a lot more than I was expecting to. I'm excited to read the next book in this series. :)
I loved this book! And the characters are amazing! I mean, you can find the daughter of Goldilocks, Rapunzel and Robin Hood also. And many more. Haha. A very interesting book.
The ever after high series is fun energetic mysterious and many more amazing names that have been used for years. In book 1= the storybook of legends apple white and raven queen go on a mysterious adventure to find out if ravens destiny is truly secure. In book 2= The un - fairest of them all. Apple and raven travel yet again wondering why raven queen hasn't poofed yet. These amazing tales are what inspired me to read. I eventually went on to a wonderlandiful world = book 3. And to Next Top Villain Every book in the harry potter series And many more amazing books that you can get on goodreads and at your local bookstore/library so I highly recommend this amazing book.
there are so many characters we sadly will never see grow because EAH is cancelled, but the books give us a semblance of what the show could have been. it follows duchess (mainly) who struggles to fight her destiny, like who wants to be a swan forever? but by winning 'next top villain' she could change it all. I really liked the raven-lizzie-duchess friendship.
I would have loved this as a kid. this would have been my entire personality.
Ever After High The Next Top Villain 1. Author’s Background The author is Suzanne Selfors. She has made a lot of books and my favorite books are her Ever After High series. She was born in 1963 and a lot of her books are fantasy and some of them are mystery books. 2. Literary Time Period This book is when they have kings and queens but it is mixed in this generation time. 3. Setting The setting is in a school. It's not a normal school because it is like a kingdom. It starts off at their room and then it goes to their classes. Some of the places they have class in is weird but that’s how they will learn to be like their parents. 4. Characters The swan princess ( Duchess Swan ) and the Queen of Hearts princess ( Lizzie Hearts ). They are in this class called General Villainy class. 5. Theme The theme is fairy tell. They go to school to learn how to become their parents so there storybook won’t end but there are some kids that want to make to make their own choices and be different from their parents. 6. Plot Summary Duchess Swan and Lizzie Hearts have a lot in common-- both are princesses, both feel like the lowest girls on the Fairy Day pole, and both have been selected to attend General Villainy class at Ever After High. Lizzie has one thing that Duchess doesn’t have, though-- a Happily Ever After at the end of her story. And Duchess wanted one, too-- more than anyone knows. While Lizzie and the other princesses train for the day when they will rule their kingdoms, Duchess is torn between her role as the perfect, dutiful princess and her rebellious ambition to be a queen. Can this pround ballerina keep her pointe shoes on the right path, or will she show her true feathers and go after the destiny she desires? When she sees an opportunity to be a rebel, will she seize it and become Ever After High’s next top villain?
7. Literary Devices Lizzie Hearts- has to be like her mother and she has to have her mother’s temper Duchess Swan- she wants to be a royal but she is also a rebel because she doesn’t know her whole story that she is living Raven Queen- she doesn’t want anything to do with being evil but everyone expects her to be like her mother and cause trouble 8. Memorable Quotes Lizzie Hearts always says “ Chop off their heads”
It’s a new year at Ever After High the school for the next generation of fairytale characters. Duchess Swan daughter of the swan princess is determined to make her family proudly, even if it means pledging her destiny and becoming a swan forever. She is a royal, but there is one difference for her, she doesn’t have an happily ever after, and often wishes for one just like the other princesses at the school, and also she has the magical ability to turn into a swan. Duchess longs for a happily ever after, her dream to become a ballerina, and Daring Charming. However, something wildly mad has happened, she has been put in GENERAL VILLAINY with her roommate Lizzie Hearts daughter of the queen of hearts. Duchess is shocked, she doesn’t have an ounce of evil in her bloodline! But when she overhears the headmaster talking to the professor of the General Villainy, she discovers she may be able to change her destiny and she would do anything for it, even destroy the only friendship she has, that is Lizzie Hearts. When Mr. Badwolf gives out thronework (homework) to do a rotten and nasty thing by the end of the week, Duchess decides to sabotage the other students. Will she lose her only friend and win the competition? And more importantly will she ever get her happily ever after? I really liked this novel, due to its ever after hexciting (Ever after high language) plot of sabotage, desire, and friendship. Duchess has a lot of things going on for her, she is somehow juggling them really well. The author Suzanne Selfors, incorporates a little sidetrack even, Daring Charming, Princessology classes, and so on, The little things in Duchess’s life still makes the story 20% more interesting. In the end, the way the author leaves at an cliffhanger is an awesome way to end, although I don’t like to when that happens, but hey, it’s like what is going to happen, I have to know! I’ll will only spoil a little, Duchess finds her dark swan side and she sees black feathers in her transformation after a little mishap. So find out what happens and dive into the world of Ever after!
It turned out better than I thought it would. I was nervous starting this book, mainly because I had finished Shannon Hales Ever After High series, and thought I would not enjoy this book in comparison. But I was so surprised, I could not put this down! It was a quick read, and I loved to see this side of Duchess Swan, aside from the main show. One thing I want to nitpick though, Mr. Bad Wolf. I personally like it when characters have both good and bad qualities, to make them a likable character to someone else, even if you don't like them, you know someone else might. There are no redeeming qualities, you know, SHOCKER HES THE BIG BAD WOLF. But I guess it is really no big deal. One other thing, how did Sparrow Hood get Villiany for his father stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, but Goldie didn't, and is considered a Princess, when she really isn't and by that logic should also be in Villiany for breaking and entering? Besides that, great story! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Some extreme silliness I didn't fully expect to read since it was a gift, but I was bored and my mind is so focused on this other show, so this was a welcome distraction. Obviously this was short and simple cause it's meant for young kids, but honestly I still found it enjoyable. Duchess was always my favorite character for some reason, so I liked getting to be in her mind. She's really not the mean girl I thought she was, she's just focused and lost in her own world I guess. Anyways the concept and premise worked, and I liked that the focused on the class. Goldie was making me mad though like girl please be fr, but I liked Duchess and Lizzie they were chill. It did enough to keep my engaged and I think that counts for something. I liked the little twists and turns they did, and I liked how they handled Duchess learning to accept the fact that she wants to be a rebel. It was cute and short and I don't have much else to say. This did make me miss my old ever after high and monster high phase, so iconic when you think about it.
I really enjoyed this one. I haven't finished reading Shannon Hale's trilogy yet but since I got this from the library and Hale's books I own, I figured I better read this one before. I love all the sayings they have in here and all the magical gadgets they use and talk about. I love the world Ever After High presents and I can't help but want to go to school here. I also love all the different characters presented and the different spins Selfors has created for her new characters. If you've read the original Ever After High books or just love a good fairytale retelling read this!
I really liked this one. it wasn't over the top with the fairy tale puns. this was a nice read as a continuation of the original books by Shannon hale. I felt for duchess swan quite a few times and felt like I could relate.
interested in reading the next one which looks like it'll deal with ginger breadhouse and maybe apple white?
also, Blondie locks annoyed the ever loving crap out of me (as the psuedo villain perhaps?) and was saddened to not see her get her just right justice. maybe next time?
I was completely engrossed in this story. I was concerned at first because I fell in love with this series because of Shannon Hale’s writing, but now I have another author I’ll need to follow. So glad they stayed true to the characters I’ve already love to read about.
so obsessed with ever after high and all its characters, who are all so well written and have such intricate stories for a "children's" series. i love you, little world of queer coded princesses. always have.

Duchess Swan, and Lizzie Hearts are put in the class general villainy and don’t know why. They have a homework assignment to do something mean by the end of the week. Dutchess sabotages everyone's homework, even Lizzie’s. They are not friends anymore. Sparrow Hood double crosses Duchess. A theme in this book is that friendship is important. First, Duchess ruines Lizzie’s homework and she is mad. But soon Duchess saves Lizzie’s life and they are friends again. Sparrow makes a deal with Duchess and breaks it. Even though he should have kept it. Overall this book was very good. I liked the storyline. It had a very good theme. I also liked how exciting she writes and how she adds so much detail. I wish that she could have added a little more to the book and make it a tiny bit more detailed.
4th book in the series Ever After High that my granddaughter loves to read. This book was much better than the 3rd one. Duchess Swan did not want her destiny to be a swan forever. She wanted to stay human so she'd have legs. The villain assignment was fun. Duchess Swan changed into just the right character when she was trying to foil the other ones' try. Sparrow double-crossed her so she got a DG for the class (a Do-gooder) and he got Top Villian. But Duchess Swan also found her black feather and decided she could be both black and white and still write her own end of the story. Cute, fun, short read.
