Do you ever wonder if the life you are living is the one you were meant to have? Aubrey Gillian has come to a point in her relationship where everything she’s fought for and everything she believes in is turning to ash. The passion needs to be reignited, or it’s time to extinguish the embers. Not an easy task though. Not when you have two small children and a boyfriend whose life is on the line every day. Jace Ryan, her protective firefighter keeps her safe. It’s his job and something he put his heart into. A heart she’s trying to save. A heart he desperately wants her to save. His love is never the question. When everything around them tests their will, faith, and ability to tell right from wrong, sometimes it’s easy to believe their intentions aren’t for the greater good but only evil. Just when Aubrey thinks she’s made some ground, her past comes back like an accelerant to the already engulfed fire that is their relationship. Now her ex-boyfriend and mother are threatening to put out the one fire she knows she needs. One night and one fate leaves them wondering if their something beautiful has turned to something tragic. Just like a fire, you can never predict the path your life is going to take. How do you know when it’s too involved and there’s no chance of survival? How do you know when to back out and run? It wasn’t supposed to be like this. They weren’t the people they had become. The worst part, the one who could put out the flames of doubt Aubrey has now, is the one who started it when he stole her red crayon.
We all talk about our favorite book boyfriends and how we ended the night staying up ridiculously late reading...and are subsequently suffering from book hangovers. Here’s what I’d like to know - what about emotional hangovers? What about books that just grab your heart, squeeze so tight and don’t let go? Books that you connect with on a level that you never have before? For me, that’s what this story did. I felt like Chelsea Landon wrote Aubrey’s character just to speak to me. Let’s see if you think she speaks to you.
Aubrey is handed a shitty start to life - no father figure, and a mother that would rather drink herself into a stupor than be a parent. Growing up feeling like you’re worthless - it takes a toll, and that is what happens to Aubrey. Her insecurities rule her life, complicating personal relationships - impairing her from making decisions out of fear. I think that we can all relate to this on some level, who hasn’t felt insecure about themselves, their choices, their lifestyle? Aubrey learns to function on a certain level of control and denial. Controlling the things she does let in, and denying the problems she refuses to see. The deeper I got into this book, the more her layers were peeled away and we began to see the real woman hiding underneath - the woman that desperately wanted the family she never had.
Chelsea Landon has a phenomenal writing style - now, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, however I for one love the way she writes as though she’s really speaking to her readers. It draws you in, establishes the connection between author, characters, readers. This book reminded me on so many levels of Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens, not the actual story - the feelings, the emotions, the internal struggles.
The book revolves around Aubrey and Jace - and their epic love story. From the time they were small children, they knew they were meant for each other. Circumstances arise, and they are ripped apart for a span of 10 years. Aubrey and her sister endure a lot during those years living with their Mother, and as soon as she can - she moves back to the town she grew up in. A chance meeting (okay, its a fire) has her being rescued by a very, very sexy….and somewhat familiar - firefighter. Their reunion sparks passion and soon their dreams come true - a relationship and two children.
Not every relationship is a fairytale, they are tough to maintain, tough to survive. Love isn’t always enough, no matter how bad you want something, sometimes - it can just drift away. People may say communication is key - and they may be right...but communication doesn’t come easy to everyone, and it certainly doesn’t come easy to these two in this book. Two busy careers, two children and not a lot of time for each other starts to cast doubt on what they know deep down they have together. The doubt catches flame, and before long its a raging fire of hurt feelings, distrust, and pain. Throughout the story, we are left wondering if they will have the strength as a couple to douse the flame and rekindle their lost romance.
What I loved about this book was its intricacies - it had humor, some hot, HOT love scenes (make sure you’ve got your fire extinguishers handy ladies!), despair, heartbreak and firefighters. I mentioned the fire fighters right? Just in case, I’ll repeat - there’s FIREFIGHTERS! Just when you think you have this book figured out - Chelsea hits us out of nowhere with a curveball like no other. Be prepared, you will do the ugly cry...and damn if its not ugly.
This book may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a romance that takes work, relationships that are tough yet rewarding...if you’re looking for a book that will peel away your layers and make you really see what’s inside - then I say, give it a try.
You may just find that Something Worth Saving is Something Worth Reading.

I shelved these as marriage-in-trouble and married-with-kids although the H/h are in a committed relationship but technically H/h are not married. H is not sure h wants marriage and h is insecure because H never asked her to marry him. They have a past history in which both have insecurities although they love each other. The story is written in the context of how precarious firefighting is and how it affects both the firefighter and their loved ones. The insecurities and stress of life and jobs create distance between H/h - I did want to find out how all was resolved between the two and if they would get their HEA.
What didn't work for me? I couldn't connect totally with the characters why there was such an emotional distance that communicating with each other wouldn't solve. Why couldn't they get the other to understand? Why didn't the H ask h to marry him and keep asking until she said yes - if that is what scared him? I didn't see any indication that h would leave him. Even his buddies said he was leaving it too long. So, 3 stars
Came in to this book without any expectations and ended up enjoying this story.
It's no secret that I love romances involving already-married couples. In the case of Jace and Aubrey, living together with two kids. They're very committed to each other and their family but like any family, cracks are showing in their relationship.
For one, Aubrey is now doubting Jace's love and commitment since he never really did ask Aubrey to marry him even though she wants to. Jace on the hand, didn't think Aubrey would want marriage considering her unfortunate childhood. This story is very much about Jace and Aubrey's journey as a couple. Jace is a firefighter and I really liked how this story delved into that and how it mirrors Jace and Aubrey's issues.
I also liked that the issues are not all external, although, there are external factors trying to keep them from each other. But it's also more than that. We also get a glimpse of Jace's relationship with his fellow firefighters and Aubrey's circle of friends.
So why not a solid four?
Well, the writing style didn't work for me. If it hadn't been for the compelling story of Jace and Aubrey, I wouldn't be able to finish this book. But the characters hooked me, so I soldiered on and actually ended up enjoying myself.
Something Worth Saving is a story about feelings, struggles and growth and Chelsea Landon spun it quite well. I was glad when Cassia suggested we do something a little different - a 4 person review for this book.
The author sets the stage with Jace and Aubrey trying to manage their relationship with their busy work life (Jace is a firefighter and Aubrey owns her own candle/accessories business) and their even busier home life with their two small children. They struggle to find time to reconnect. As with any relationship, the “honeymoon phase” ends quickly and then the tough part begins. This is the part of the relationship that requires both parties involved and striving to make it work.
“Why is it that after you have kids, your sex life goes to shit?"
“Look at us. Two people, kind of naked, in bed, arguing about the last time we had sex, but neither of us making the attempt to actually have sex.”
I have to admit, I was laughing pretty freaking hard during that scene.
Of course, they have unexpected visitor(s) from the past that throws fuel into the fire. Who doesn't love more conflicts and drama.
To be honest, I was on the fence for the first quarter of the book. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the book, I enjoyed the humour, I just felt that it was missing something. I didn’t feel that connection right away. They both lacked in communication and if only they had talked things through, half the shit that went down could have been avoided. Also their relationship at times seemed a bit over the top.
Then BAM! The book took a different turn. It transitioned from an "ok" book to a "great" book. The boat scene…OMG, devastating! I was hooked from that point on. I read that part on my break at work, and let me tell you, I was an emotional wreck. I had to stop halfway through the next chapter because I knew that I would have had to leave work to avoid embarrassing myself with ugly tears. Was I wrong, hell no! The author had me on an emotional twister. You felt the pain and heartache as if you were with the characters, going through this experience. The way things were described were painstakingly perfect. Great attention to detail. The ripple effect of one event changed everything.
The characters then developed and grew, in my opinion. I finally felt the connection that was so desperately needed back in the beginning of the book. We were getting to know more about the characters fears and what their underlying issues were.
You hear from both POVs. I found I liked Jace's POV the best. I loved his interaction with his fellow firefighters. The scenes with Jace fighting fire were amazing! I would love to hear more from the other firefighters. I hope Chelsea continues with books involving them.
I don't want to give too much away. Even with a slow beginning this book was definitely worth the read!
I was very excited when I was asked to review this book. I am a huge fan of books that involve really hot, ripped alpha male characters and come on, a book about firefighters, I freaking LOVE books about firefighters. A book about hot, rugged men saving lives and coming home to take care of the women they love, always hot hot hot in my eyes.
This book was a little different than most firefighter books I have read in the past. Usually the couple meet, have incredibly hot sex and lots of it, and eventually fall in love and spend the rest of their lives together in bliss and contentment. This book is not that book. In Something Worth Saving, we meet Jace and Aubrey. This is a couple who were best of friends as children but were ripped apart when Aubrey`s alcoholic and emotionally unstable mother moves them out of state. Over the next few years Aubrey engaged in a very unhappy, abusive relationship with Ridley. They date all throughout high school until Aubrey finally has the strength and courage to leave the cheating, no good loser behind and moves back home to Portland to start fresh.
Aubrey and Jace reunite when Aubrey accidentally sets a fire that Jace and his team have to come and put out. Fast forward a few years, Jace and Aubrey have two kids, an apartment and are just trying to find time to spend even a few minutes together each day before the rest of the world crashes back in on them. This book portrays a real relationship with real issues and fears. The first few chapters are heavy with frustration where I found myself actually yelling and my kindle wanting to smack Aubrey and Jace upside the head and tell them to stop walking away from each other and JUST TALK ALREADY!!! Then…….. in come the firefighters. We meet Jace`s entire team and they are definitely what I have come to expect from a book about a group of incredibly hot and sexy men. I loved, loved, loved these boys and you really come to know each of these characters. I want more, especially Axel, I NEED to know more about Axel.
This book may me laugh hysterically, cry ugly tears (so glad I was at home by myself, as it was not pretty), yell, curse like a drunken pirate and smile. I found it a little hard to get invested in the beginning chapters as all I wanted to do was yell at Jace and Aubrey to pull their heads out of their asses and get their acts together, but as the story progressed I found that I could not put this book down and had to know what was coming next.
Of course you know that the above mentioned no good loser Ridley and Aubrey`s alcoholic mom return to wreck havoc and stir up all sorts of problems. I was hoping for a bit more with the ending of this book, it did feel a bit rushed to me - like everything was being tied in a nice pretty bow very quickly. There was so much emotion and detail in the beginning chapters of the book leading up to the end and then all of a sudden it was over and I looked at my kindle and literally said out loud, that was it? This book was very well written and I fell in love with each and every character.
"We're good at loving. We're good at sex. We're good at being Jace and Aubrey."
"We're not good once conflict arrives. We're not good at talking." --Jace
"You guys have the communication style of monks." --- Brooke
This sums this book up perfectly.

Something Worth Saving in my opinion is MUST read that I have and will continue to recommend to everyone! A book that’s not your “normal” read. It’s out of the box. I’m not talking a dark read but a book about established couple that loves each other but has hit those road bumps we often do in any long term relationship. A book that proves communication is the key to every relationship and shows the reader that just because the butterflies in the stomach have passed the “spark” is still there.
When I started reading I.......
Told from dual POV’s of the main characters Jace & Aubrey we are treated to an inside look of what they were thinking, feeling and worrying about. Surprisingly, what they thought was quite the same but sadly they just didn’t have the words to express things to each other. I connected with both characters right away.
There were times I wanted to.....
and quite a few....
each of them had their moments. Some moments one or the other needed..
They have two small children. They both work. Jace is a firefighter and his schedule often leaves Aubrey home after work at night tending to the kids. You will see a trend with Jace when it comes to working and his buddies. We see the real side of a relationship with children ~ the I’m too tired to have sex or no time to have it cause we all know that you can’t bound and gag two small children. Well, you can but I find that 5 year olds have big mouths and they probably would tell someone.
One of the things I loved about this book is it made me laugh, hard, out loud. There were times that I re-read a passage three or four times because it was THAT funny. I literally had to put down the Kindle while I ran to the bathroom. I don’t think it’s acceptable to pee your pants at 43 years of age. Heck, I was home alone with my two dogs but they’d know I peed.
Oh yes, I was totally.......
When the book reached a certain point I cried and cried and cried. Real tears. Real heart break. Real pain. I felt that! Not every book is capable of making me laugh and cry so I was very happy! It’s also at this point that there’s a real possibility that Jace & Aubrey’s relationship will strengthen or blow to pieces. You will know when you get to this part.
I started doing this.....
and from that point on I was either sobbing or laughing. Sometimes a mixture of both.
The secondary characters (Brooke, Logan, Kari, Kasey, Shanna, Denny, Axe, and Lauren) are tremendous. Each of them could have their own spin-off and be just as entertaining as Aubrey & Jace. I personally feel in love with Lauren, Aubrey’s sister, oh my there are really no words to describe her but I guarantee you will laugh at 95% of the things that come out of her mouth. Denny, poor guy, he’s entertaining and I will leave it at that cause when you read it you will see for yourself.
Overall the book felt like I was sitting down with very good friends and they were telling me a story. A story unlike anything else I’ve read to date. A story that doesn’t have angst just to have it and doesn’t throw tragic situations at you, just to shock you. It’s well balanced with the proper amount of everything. I felt what they were going through. When they were devastated, I was. When they were happy, I was. When they felt like nothing would ever be the same and nothing would fix what they were going through, heck I felt that too.
I have to admit I never skip ahead in a book and this one I had to force myself not to take a quick look-see. I felt when things were going to “happen.” I almost woke up my hubby to tell him I felt something awful was going to happen and I would need to talk to him about it. I don’t think he would appreciate me waking him at 2 a.m. to talk “books.”
This book will have you.....
and I actually like this a couple times......
I despise spoilers so you won’t get anything out of me about what goes down but I have one recommendation for you. Pay attention to the blurb at the start of each Chapter. Those are enlightening if I do say so myself.
and by the end of the book I was....
This was a 5 star read for me. It has made my ALL time favorite list and one of my favorite reads of 2014. I’m so happy I stumbled across this on Amazon! I hope, pray, fingers crossed that the author gives us more and soon. I love her writing style and I have a feeling she will be a top favorite of mine. A whole series about the other characters would be mighty nice!
From page one this book grabbed me. It pulled me in and until I was finished, it didn’t let go. I could go on and on about how I could relate to this but you can read that after this review. What I want to go on about right now is the writing of Chelsea Landon. She knows how to write a freaking book. She knows how to make it relatable. She knows how to pull a reader in, play with their emotions and spit them out on the other side trying to figure out what the heck just happened. At least that’s what she did for me.
Let’s start with Aubrey. She’s every woman. She’s the women you lives next door. She’s your best friend. Chelsea made her real. She’s the mom of 2 kids. She owns her own business. She’s in love with her boyfriend, baby daddy. Jace is more than that but they aren’t married. Not even engaged. They are in the domestic partnership. And they are comfortable. Too comfortable. Other things become more important than making sure everything is ok.
Now let’s talk about Jace. Jace is a firefighter. Jace is hot. Jace is a man who doesn’t like to talk, like most men. Chelsea made him real. He has an ordinary job. He’s not a millionaire. Not a biker. Not what most book boyfriends are. He’s real. He loves Aubrey. He loves their kids. But when something isn’t workings, hes a normal guy, he doesn’t want to talk about it.
Now their relationship. In the beginning, it was passionate. And then they had kids. And like most of us who have had kids, it ends up taking a back burner. I don’t want to say things fall apart but they aren’t the best. They are still madly in love with each other. Just other things take priority.
This is the story of Aubrey and Jace and their relationship. That might not make it sound exciting but the way Chelsea wrote it, it was. They know they are having problems and they want to make things work but they don’t talk about it. They know they love each other but they don’t always show it. They want to be a family and both wanted to be married to each other, but they have never actually talked about it.
This is the story of making a relationship that is on the back burner and bringing it forward and lighting it on fire. Finding that spark again. Through the ups and the downs. Love isn’t always enough. You must work at it.
Just like Come Sundown had drink recipes at the beginning of each chapter, Something Worth Saving had fire and dispatch talk. I like this unique twist Landon adds.
Reading this book, was like sitting down with my girlfriends and listening to their stories. Something Worth Saving does not have the drama and angst just to have it or shock you. This story is more real life with genuine and real characters. This is not your usual read. It is not a dark read, but an established couple that love one another but have hit one of those road bumps that we all seem to hit at one time or another. This book proves that communication is the key to a relationship and that just because you no longer get the "butterflies" in your stomach, the "sparks" can still be there.
Something Worth Saving is told from both Aubrey and Jace's perspective. The reader gets to see what each of them is thinking, feeling, and worrying about. It seems it is the same but neither have the words they need to express.
I related so much to this story! Like I said before, the characters hit a road bump, as have I in my marriage before. Aubrey and Jace have two small children, I have three. Jace is a firefighter, as is my husband, with a crazy schedule and Aubrey works full time, as do I. Landon shows the reader the "real" side of a relationship with children. Just look at the excerpt below! How many of you have never been there?! You can't answer unless you have children!
"Something Worth Saving" by Chelsea Landon is definitely something worth reading.
Aubrey - forced to move away from her boy, Jace, with her mom who has been anything but a good role model. At her first opportunity she moved out of "dysfunction junction" and back to Seattle.
Jace - the boy who took Aubrey's heart when he took her crayon. He has joined the family business as a firefighter in Seattle.
These two have fallen into a rut to say the least. They both feel the distance but just can't bridge the gap. They know they have to find themselves as much as their way back to each other. There is no other outcome.
This story made me laugh - from how they crossed paths after all the years apart and from their misadventures in trying to rekindle their relationship. It made me cry - sorry, not ready to talk about it. It even made me want to "throat punch" them both. Seriously, it is so much harder to keep that crap bottled up.
I had many moments when I knew exactly what they were thinking. It isn't hard to be so used to someone that life makes us forget what brought us together in the first place - even if we know leaving just isn't an option.
Let me introduce you to Aubrey. She's a spunky gal who lives a full life. She loves her kids Jayden and Gracie and her boyfriend Jace. Aubrey had a rough childhood and when she was old enough she left her hometown and started over in Seattle. As luck would have it Jace also relocated to Seattle and they were able to reconnect as adults. Her sister Lauren joined her a few years later. Aubery does her best to be a good person: a good friend, a good Mom even though she didn't have one, she tries to be a good role model for her kids and she really wants to be a good partner for Jace, but her past sometimes makes her doubt herself, and like all of us she is not perfect, some days she feels very far from it. In spite of that she keeps pushing herself forward. There is a growing distance between her and Jace and she isn't sure how to fix it and they can't seem to talk about it. As you might expect life gets between them when her family comes into town which ups the tension between them, but when tragedy strikes to close for Jace's comfort how will they find a way to keep moving forward? The characters are genuine and real and make this an engaging read.

Gosh, where do I even begin on how much I loved this book? I will try not to make the review too long. First and foremost it was refreshing to read something so very different from the normal romance book. This book is not a “he/she falls in love instant with each” fairytale book. I loved that. This is an established couple with kids and real relationship issues they need to work through. Second, I love Firefighter’s and this book was based on a Firefighter’s life and love. And Third, the suspense and twists in this book will rock your socks off.
With that said let’s get into the details. Jace and long-time girlfriend Aubrey have known each other since they were six years old. They knew since they were six they were going to be together. Aubrey is forced by her alcoholic mother to move away when Aubrey is 12. Aubrey has a bad experience with a boyfriend and moves back to Seattle when she is 18. After working a while she and Jace run back into each other and this begins their current relationship and two children. Jace and Aubrey find that life as parents with jobs and busy schedules makes it hard to connect on an intimate level and become frustrated with their situation. They start to drift apart and this is our story.
When I first started to read the story it took me a minute to get into the whole angst of the situation. I am not normally a huge lover of angst but this was a different kind of angst, one of the real kind. (Ie- Can we make our relationship work? Am I still physically attractive to my significant other after birthing two children?) This book was written with fictional characters but I bet most of the problems addressed here we all have encountered in our relationships at one point. A few times I thought the author was writing about my life (minus the crazy ex). It was scary and it felt real. It made me think about how I have handled my relationships.
Something Worth Saving was so emotionally charged I am still buzzing from it. I am going to have a book hangover for quite a while. Be prepared for an ugly cry my heart was torn out and placed carefully back in its place by the end. We also see quite a few laugh-out-loud moments with some of Aubrey’s and her friends/sister antics.
I must say that from real personal experience as a Firefighter and as the wife of a Firefighter the emotions that are dealt with in this book are all valid and so real. My husband has been in the fire service for 25 years and I still have to deal with the same issues as Aubrey had in this book. As the significant other of a Firefighter or other badge-oriented career, you are the single parent, the mom and the dad, the mechanic, handy man, do-it-all person better than 50% of the time. You often feel like you have to fight to keep everything in check. This is what Aubrey had to do. I could sympathize with all of her issues. I could also sympathize with Jace having issues with not wanting to talk about anything it was how he dealt with all of the stress. This book covers how important Communication is in a relationship. If you do not have strong communication it can slowly destroy everything. What these characters went through was real and it happens.
This story is of surviving, love, loss, joy, utter despair, heart-wrenching grief, the commitment to our job vs. our family, and most importantly what it means to save something worth saving.
Chelsea Landon definitely knows how to do research and get the details right. Her characters are believable and her secondary characters are just as wonderful. The flow of the story was precise and beautiful. I think I reached the max amount of allowable highlighted favorite quotes.
I will always look at red crayons differently since reading this book. Jace is on my best book boyfriend list with his swoon worthy moments and sentiments. So is the rest of the fire-house. This book is a stand-alone. Be warned once you start reading it you won’t be able to stop until you’re done.
I would HIGHLY Recommend this book to every single person!!!! I will be checking out more of Chelsea’s work in the immediate future. Ok I am done but there is still so much more to say about how incredible this book was.
My Favorite Quotes:
The first time Jayden saw Jace in his bunker gear ready to go to a fire, you would have thought he’d seen a superhero.
Ever heard of an accelerant? It’s used to increase the intensity of a fire. It’s my theory on jealousy and love. Love is the fire. Jealousy is the accelerant.
I wanted to crawl inside his chest and hold his heart. I wanted to beg him to save this, me, us, and ask him where it had gone wrong.
We used to be one person, one heart and one soul fighting fire together. Now we’re struggling to find our own way, our safety line cut, lost in clouds of smoke with no visibility.
Firefighters aren’t good at anything besides fighting fire. And I say that because it’s true. We can’t act normal if we’re not making frun of someone. Most of us suffer from shift insomnia, have drinking problems and depression. We can’t make relationships work, and we have a hard time co-existing. We’re impatient, we’re angry, we’re annoyed, but we’re good guys.
When you understand fire, and how it gains strength, you can fight it. When you understand love, you can give it.
You don’t choose what happens to you. It finds you.
I don’t know if you can hear a heart breaking, or how quickly it happens. Does it happen instantly or over the years? I know it can happen instantly.
I received this complimentary copy from PR&ATR for an honest review.
I give it 5 fangs/stars.
This book is more true to life, and by that I mean rather than the plot being about a couple meeting & falling in love, it's a real look into a couple who have been together for a few years, have 2 kids under the age of 5 and they are drifting apart. They love each other but somehow during the constant stress and strains of both working full time and dealing with the two kids they have lost touch and hardly communicate to each other any more about how they feel.
For all you readers out there who have kids, partners, jobs... You will find yourself saying " hell yeah, that's so true!" the I’m too tired to have sex or no time to have it cause we all know that feeling don't we!
The scene where they are trying to get intimate with a howling dog, kids screaming outside the locked door, while they try to desperately ignore it and get some "physical relief" if you get what I mean, had me in stitches... YUP I've been in that situation.
The story line felt so true to life that the author has either done some in depth era search into how couples tend to get lost in the daily routine of work and being parents, or she's lived it herself and has written from the heart.
This story is written with two POV Jace, who is a firefighter, and Aubrey who is partners in her own candle making business,There are other characters, in the story who are quite relevant to the story and when it came to the parts where the story is told from Jase's point of view, you really got the impression that the author had either experience in being close to what it must be like to be in the inner circle of a firey's life or again she had really done her research again.
So when reading Aubrey's POV I could relate so well since I've walked in those shoes myself, when reading Jase's I was hooked by the vivid descriptions written about what it was like to be a fire fighter, the brotherhood, the family, because working in that type of job, it's a life, not a job. Jase's POV on how he felt, but how he just couldn't find the words to express these feelings was well done.
I connected with both characters right away.
We see the real side of a relationship with children too ~ the messy house, screaming kids, disastrous meal times?
The book made me laugh in the funny bits, There were times that I highlighted bits because they were such wise words or true statements.
And then there are the times when I literally had to put down the Kindle while I sat sobbing into my hands, at one point half way through I was thankful to god for sunglasses, as I was sat waiting in the car at school leaving time, in hysterics, No tissues, and people milling all around the car! Then I had to get out and try not to look like a mad woman hiccuping and sniffing while I collected my grandson!
Did I say I was highlighting passages left right and centre? This is one part that just had me sobbing. "When I am called to duty, God, wherever flames may rage, grant us the strength to save lives, whatever be their age.
Help us embrace a little child, before it is too late, or save an older person, from the horror of that fate.
Enable us to be alert, and hear the weakest shout, to quickly and efficiently, put the fires out.
We want to fulfil our calling, and be the best we can, in guarding our every neighbour, and protecting their property.
And if it be, while on the job, I should lose my life, please bless with your sustaining hand, all those I’ve loved in life."
I decided I needed to leave it till I was on my own to continue, and there are some really sad parts, but life isn't all a bed of roses this is a real life kind of story, I was so involved, as if I was really living in the story, I cried and cried and cried. Real tears, Real pain. Not every book I've read has done that so well done to Ms Langdon for doing such a brilliant job, and I will be adding this new author to my authors to watch list... Can't wait to see what you will write next.
Mature book for couples who are married, have kids and are struggling in their relationship. I honestly didn't like the writing style and skipped some lines but the rest was good, it just isn't really for me since i'm far from being married and having kids.
You don’t realize it, it happens slowly, but one day you wake up take a look around and think how did my life end up like this? This isn’t how I planned it. We’re supposed to be partners, not roommates. What happened to us?
I really liked the premise of the story. It’s different – we look into Aubrey and Jace’s relationship, and we aren’t brought in right at the beginning either. Audrey and Jace have been together for a while and have two kids under the age of 5. So, how interesting can it be following the lives of two everyday working parents with kids, who have zero time for each other or themselves? Well, pretty darn interesting. I couldn’t put this down. Want to know why? Because I wanted to know how my life was going to turn out…. yes I was reading my life! It’s a look at what happens after the newness of a relationship wears off and kids come along.
It was easy to relate to what happens to Jace and Aubrey’s relationship. It’s about what happens when you become complacent, fall into a routine, and take each other for granted – resentment festers and things are ignored until they can no longer be pushed to the side without tripping over them. A relationship is work, love is work, and marriage is work.
So what’s the one thing a marriage/relationship cannot survive without? You probably said love, right? Ummm….. nope. Communication is the key, and Jace and Aubrey learn that first hand. With the dual POVs we get to see the insecurities that both harbor but are afraid to voice. Knowing how each felt, I couldn’t help myself from yelling “well, you need to say that OUT LOUD to him (or her)!!!!” But honestly, it’s easier said than done, and it’s pretty much how it works in real life, right??? Jace and Aubrey’s inability to talk brought a big plate of doubt to the table which is always followed by questions and what-if’s.
I liked that Jace is a firefighter and that became the backdrop and basis of the story and writing. We also see how Aubrey’s childhood plays a part in the overall story. The comparison of fire to their relationship is very fitting and woven throughout; it’s actually quite interesting. At times though, the fire references were a bit over used – I understand the intent which I wholeheartedly loved, but at some points it became just a touch repetitive. I think the story could have still stood on its own and had the same impact if used a bit less. The overuse affected its impact for me, and sometimes I was tempted to skim parts when that happened.
It’s hard to think that with the way the story is written and the in depth knowledge of firefighting that a bit of reality or personal experience didn’t find its way into the pages. The story feels too real to not have a bit of real life woven in. So if that’s the case, Chelsea Landon, I commend you on putting a very big piece of yourself out there.
I know this is randomly thrown in, but…….I have to mention that I absolutely love how Jace and Aubrey met…. BOTH TIMES. It’s sweet, cute, and absolutely heart melting.
Overall, I’m glad I picked this one up. It was a nice change from what’s out there now.
"After a while you get comfortable, words and motions get familiar, and before you know you assume that they know and feel the same way, and you stop saying what needs to be said"
Something Worth Saving by Chelsea Landon is a story about love and life, how sometimes life gets in the way of actually living. Jace and Aubrey were a couple like most others, they lived together, had two adorable children that they loved with all their hearts and careers that they worked hard at, the only difference between them and other couples that they knew was, even after being together and having children, they still had not committed to each other through marriage, life had gotten in the way. Meeting each other in kindergarten, after arguing over who would get to use the coveted red crayon, they were best friends. Aubrey was then taken from Jace when her mother decided to move away. A chance meeting years later when Aubrey accidentally set her store on fire, Jace had been one of the firemen on the scene to extinguish the blaze. They started dating, and before they knew it, they lived in an apartment with two children and no wedding rings.
Aubrey wanted to get married, and at times questioned why Jace had never asked her to be his wife. His brothers at the firehouse would often tease him, telling him to make an honest woman out of Aubrey but still he never asked the question that she yearned to hear. As time went on and they both became busier and busier, things became a routine for them, and things like saying I love you, or spending alone time together was something that happened less and less often. Aubrey worried that something was coming between them and the longer it festered, the worse it would get. Jace loved Aubrey with all of his heart and he wanted her to be his wife, but he was unsure, with her upbringing and her past history with guys, did she even want to get married. Instead of talking to her about it, Jace did what he always did, kept his thoughts and even his fears of losing Aubrey to himself letting them simmer just under the surface until one day the ignited into a fire that neither of them could stop from spreading.
"We used to be one person, one heart and one soul fighting fire together. Now we're struggling to find our own way, our safety line cut, lost in clouds of smoke with no visibility."
It isn't until Aubrey's ex-boyfriend who broke her heart and forced her to leave her home and return to Seattle Ridley suddenly and unexpectedly appears and a tragedy strikes the firehouse where Jace works, that their world is shaken to its core and they fight through the smoke and blaze to find their way back to the love that they once had for each other. Would they make it through the heartache that plagued them? Only time would tell.
"There's something to be said about our memories of the past. They teach us about ourselves in ways others can't. You can't learn it. You have to live it."
Something Worth Saving was a 3 star read for me and I would recommend it to others who enjoy a story with some hot firemen, feisty girl friends who have no filter when speaking, drama, ex-boyfriends and tragedies that awaken what was long asleep within your soul.
5 FOR REAL STARS This book was filled with such real and raw emotion. I could relate to so much in this story it was unreal for me to be reading. I loved the honesty and the reality of it all. It really made me think about life , it was not the normal escape from reality I normally love but I feel like there was so much more offered in this story if you are in a relationship like this and trying to figure things out. Thank you so much Chelsea this was a real eye opener.
Again my favorite kind of story is one that starts with a couple in childhood. That damn red crayon got to me both times !! How awesome is that !!
We have Jace and Aubrey , met in kindergarten and were basically a couple until she had to move away because of her mom. Years and years later by chance they run into each other again and that is it , they are together forever ! Now we have a dog , 2 kids , an apartment , she runs a candle business and he is a firefighter but NO RING. They are both struggling with the relationship and at the start I assumed he was going to be a cheater , it was Aubrey's POV and I was horrified that she was going to find out he was with someone else. During my worry I found quickly how real this writing was for me. A day in their life was so similar to a day in my life !! Lack of sex , lack of communication and basically just going through the motions of life as roommates. LOL . It really is not funny but refreshing to read such honest and raw emotion. After reading some of Jace's POV I could quickly see that their relationship troubles had nothing to do with a lack of love or other people. Their troubles all stemmed from lack of communication and past issues with self esteem and worth , for Aubrey these came from her mother , for Jace these came from Aubrey's insecurities because of her mother.
In the midst of all their soul searching and day to day life problems we have Jace's job. Not an ideal job for a father/significant other but a very honorable and important one. Every time that fire alarm went off I was on the edge of my seat expecting the worst , lets just say I could never live like that , WOW. Then that 1 night when Aubrey and Brooke were together watching the news I almost lost it , ugly tears and all and I had no clue why , I could not even read the next chapter I was so worried. The events of that night then brought on a new struggle in the relationship. This is where I wanted to slam their heads together. But also knowing from real life experiences it is not as easy as it seems on the outside.
Aubrey's past comes back to haunt them and with it a whole roller coaster of emotions and a HUGE TWIST that I did not expect. Trying not to have spoilers all I will say is HEARTBREAKING. In the end all is well and beautiful and thank goodness ! Goes to show that with a lot of hard work true love does conquer all !
What first drew me to this book was the synopsis. It sounded so completely different than a lot of the books I typically read. To find a story about after the happily ever after, you know once "real" life begins, I couldn't help but be intrigued. I'm happy to report this book did not disappoint in the least. It felt real and was full of raw emotional content. This couple had to fight for themselves, for each other, for the family and life they wanted. Like many times in our own lives their fight wasn't easy, but it made for a beautiful, well thought out and executed story about love, communication and relationships. My time with Aubrey and Jace was an experience I will not soon forget.
The story begins several years after Aubrey and Jace, childhood best friends, who re-connect many years later. They fell in love, had two children and while they aren't married they live together and face many of the same problems married couples with young children do. When work, bills, kids, and responsibilities bog down your days its tough to make time for intimacy, whether it be emotional or physical. Jace and Aubrey find themselves in this exact predicament, neither one knowing how to move forward, how to communicate their needs and desires to the other. Aware they're drifting but afraid and lost as to how to do anything to prevent their relationship from fizzling out completely.
Talk about an emotional roller coaster! The majority of the story was written from Aubrey's perspective and I found her to be a very relatable character. She tells life like it is. She knows her fears just as she knows what she wants. So many times I found myself rooting for her to find the courage and strength to fight, to follow through on her vow to say the things which needed to be said.
While I enjoyed Aburey's telling of this story I am grateful we also got to hear from Jace. It only deepened the story line knowing how he felt, seeing his love for Aubrey, struggling with his fear of losing her and everything he loves. Being inside his head, watching how everything he went through affected him, not only as a man, but as a father and a husband...it was simply perfect. If we hadn't had this opportunity the story wouldn't have worked as well. Jace made things feel more complete and well rounded.
I definitely recommend you reading Something Worth Saving, while it isn't really an escape from reality, it made an impact and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to review.
They never tell you what happens years after the 'happily ever after'. Aubrey thought she had everything she wanted in life; the boy she fell in love with when she was young, her two children, who she cherished, and her own shop. Jace a firefighter is finally reunited with the love of his life after she was taken from him. Two destined soul finally together once again, so what's wrong? Life got in the way of everything and ruined the once happy fairy tale ending. Will they bother to fight for what they both want or will life and doubts suck them under preventing any kind of happiness? Fantastic read! The story was so genuine and the characters so real and heartfelt. It was truly amazing. This book speaks to what happens to most couples married or otherwise after a couple years of being together. Some people get lucky and are happy and have a blissful marriage, while others find that marriage, kids and life changes you and your relationship. There are always trials and tribulations in any relationship and this book speaks to those struggles. I have been married for four years and have a child of my own. I was able to connect with this story on a personal level. During relationship struggles, you can either find that spark again or let it die. With divorce so easy these days, a lot if people choose not to fight anymore or realize that what they had is no more. There comes a point sometimes in life that we have to examine who we are and what we want just as Jace and Aubrey had to do. Jace is too busy saving the world when he might lose the one person he wants to save the most. Life caught up with Aubrey and she's so rundown and beat with the kids she doesn't know if she can fight anymore. Both characters want the same thing but life gets in the way and reality sets in. The lessons that Jace and Aubrey learned are essential to any relationship. This book might not be a fairy tale happily ever after, but it's real, emotional, and inspiration. I recommend this book to any couple out there that is living in the reality after the fairy tale. No one is perfect and no relationship is perfect. I would also recommend this for fans of the inspirational novel FireProof. I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. Something Worth Saving is a standalone contemporary romance and for a mature audience. I would rate this book 5 fangs.
Meet Jace and Aubrey a couple who has it all but marriage. Childhood sweethearts separated and meet once again in another city and fall in love again. Along the way they have a girl and boy whom they love. Jace always knew he was meant to marry her but along the way he keeps putting it off. To him marriage is just a piece of paper.
Aubrey did not have an easy life growing up. Not really knowing her father and a drunken mom raising her and her younger sister. She does not trust men easily as her high school boyfriend cheated on her.
They love each other but they have a difficulty communicate which each other which allows for hurt feelings between along with the day to day raising of their kids take a toll. Aubrey fears for his daily safety being a fireman and the danger he faces while he does not see it as risking his life but saving and helping people.
During a stressful period of daily life where misunderstandings are further heighten. Her estranged mother resurfaces and her ex high school boyfriends pops up on the scene causing further strife. Not knowing the reason why either one are in town and making their presence known. All they know that trouble will occur.
One day tragedy occurs where Jace’s best friend and fellow fireman and childhood best friend is killed on duty while trying to save him. He feels guilt and shuts down further as he tries to cope with the loss. He spends more time with his friend’s wife and young daughter who he feels comfortable as they share their grief. She makes him realize that life is short.
One night while at work they get a call that their apartment is on fire. He reaches it and sees it is up in smoke as he searches frantically for his family and Aubrey. He finds his kids relatively safe locked in their bathroom underneath the shower. Eventually he finds her tied up in a chair barely breathing as he rescues her.
Knowing they lost everything materialistic and only have their memories left. Will they realize what they have is more important and will they be able to move on together?
For many reasons, this is an absolutely stunning and very refreshing read. I wanted to read a book with a main female character I could relate to and this book did just that. Aubrey is a mom who runs her own business and lives with the love of her life, Jace and their two children, ages 2 and 4. But lately, she feels their relationship stuck in rut and Jace very distant but he still flirts with her. They can't find the time to be intimate, and with the struggle of both working full time, caring for two small kids and Jace sometimes taking extra shifts or 24-hour shifts, Aubrey is feeling alone and scared her relationship with the man she fell in love with when she was 6 years old is heading down the drain. So much so that she doesn't dare talk to him about it in fear he'll leave. Never mind that Jace never popped the big question. So if you have small children, in a relationship or not, you WILL relate to Aubrey, I can almost guarantee it. It's touching how they admire and love each other , since the story is told in both POVs. The background to their story and the events leading up to the main events are very well told and organized. There's no back and forth or confusing details. The tension builds gradually and will definitely get you to bite your nails. I will not lie, I cried more than what should have been appropriate all throughout the book. It was a heart-wrenching book, from the struggle in a relationship, the pain of unsolved things, feeling alone, betrayal and losing someone you love. But underneath all that, there was always an undercurrent of un-ignited passion and love that made it breathtaking. There is a lot of action and tension in this book and highly detailed fire scenes that made it feel like an action/drama movie. What stunned me from this book is the writing. At times, it was almost poetic. Every feeling and situation was written so beautifully and eloquently, and so vivid!! That being said, JACE IS HOT!!!! One sexy, brooding firefighter right there. And I loved Aubrey, excellent character and so so so relatable!!
This book is not your typical cookie cutter romance. This book steps outside that box to explore unknown territory.
This book was one of the most heartbreaking books I have ever read. It was also one of the "realest" books I have ever read. I think there will be many readers who will be able to relate to this book one way or another, especially if you have kids, are in a long term relationship (or even married), and/or have ever felt like you are in a rut with no way out. Life can be hard, challenging, and difficult at times.
This book goes through the motions of after your ultimate HEA and when real life kicks in and real life- that bitch is not always pretty.
Aubrey and Jace are in a rut. They have two amazing children ages 2 and 4 and successful and fulfilling careers. Jace is a firefighter (did someone turn up the heat?!!). Aubrey is a business owner. Aubrey feels as though Jace doesn't love/want her and is not committed to their relationship anymore and is slowly slipping away. Jace is working more and more, picking up 24 hour shifts and Aubrey feels alone and is starting to question their relationship and Jace's commitment to her and their family.
As these two navigate unsteady waters, will Jace and Aubrey make it in the end? Will their love and devotion win out in the end? Or will doubts and uncertainty tear them apart?
This book is told in a dual POV so we get in the minds of both Aubrey and Jace. These two seriously were having the same thoughts but were too frustrated or scared to express them to each other!
This book really spoke to me. I could relate to both of the characters. The chemistry between these two was off the charts! Jace seemed insatiable at times. I really loved these two! And their circle of friends- amazing!
WOW…… This book took me on a journey, I honestly wasn’t expecting….. This is Aubrey and Jace’s story… they have been together for some time and have two beautiful children…. But they have lost their way somewhere along the line….. Their judgement is being clouded, un-enabling them to see what is right in front of them. This story is about how sometimes you lose your way and forget the reasons why you’re together which allows doubt to sneak in…. It is painfully clear that Aubrey and Jace love each other but they aren’t communicating what needs to be said…. Because if they did they would realise they both feel the same way…… but instead they are just allowing life to past them by and believing there is no going back… It takes a heart breaking tragedy to occur for them to open their eyes fully and see what they have together is something worth saving. I loved this authors writing style and was able to connect with Aubrey and Jace….. I felt their pain, hope and love as they travelled through this unknown journey…. I laughed, I smiled, I cried ugly tears….. I adored this story, it was not the normal romance story but it is a story which will stay with you as it’s real…. Every single happy couple out there goes through rough patches when there not sure they will make it through together….. ‘I could tell you a story about two people who were so lost in life they weren’t sure what was worth saving and what wasn’t’ Aubrey For me as been one of my top reads so far of 2014, I look forward to more work by this author….. This book is a MUST read!!!!!
3.5 stars Something Worth Saving was a tale the Jace and Aubrey. They have been a couple a while, have 2 kids, but are not married. The have a loving relationship and have been happy in the past, but now it seems that they are at an impasse. Things seem to be changing and neither seems to be 100 percent invested anymore. Maybe it is Aubrey's imagination. She seems something wrong.
Aubrey is getting impatient and wondering why, at this point Jace has not asked her to marry him. They have been together a while and have 2 kids. Still, no ring. This kind of bothered me as well. I get it is 2014, but sometimes it feels like more of a commitment if marriage is involved.
Then there is Jace. Typical man. He doesn't think that Aubrey cares if they are married or not. He sees them as commented and loving. Jace also knows about Aubrey's past and thinks it might jeopardize their future because elf men in the past.
While this book was an emotional journey, there was also many laughs thanks to Aubrey's friend and sister. When they were stalking Jace one night, I was laughing out loud. This story has a a lot of twists and turns. Especially when Aubrey's ex shows up with a hidden agenda.
This book was different from a lot of other's I read. It was refreshing. I enjoyed the dual points of view.
I’m going to say this. I had to stop reading at one point because I was bawling like a baby and I continued to bawl for about 30 minutes. You may not have this issue, but there is something that happens that I’ve personally been through. The fact that she brought out these emotions killed me, but makes me respect her even more as an author because I was on a freaking roller coaster.
Something Worth Saving is not a hearts and fairies book, it’s actually a book about a couple that’s been together for a few years and have a couple of kids together. It’s a story about life and actually what happens on a day to day basis. When do you fit in sex when you have kids on the other side of the door? How do you live when your man is a firefighter and risks his life every time he’s on shift?
This is Jace and Aubrey’s story and it isn’t always pretty. Sometimes you just forget how to show love to each other when there are so many other things going on in life. I’ll say this, it took me a bit to get into the books but once I got hooked I didn’t put it down (until I bawled). Chelsea Landon created a beautifully heartbreaking journey of family, love, friendship, and loss. I still feel the emotions three days after I’ve finished reading.
I will not share any details with you because I want you to take this journey on your own. You should feel the twists and turns as they happen.
Minor spoilers will be discussed here, so please stop reading if you haven't read the book yet.
This one was a tough read for me. At about the 47% mark I started bawling and could hardly stop. This book was a refreshing change from the normal romance genre we see time and time again. This deals with a couple with two young children and what happens when they get too comfortable with their everyday routine and stop trying. I wanted to smack both Jace and Aubrey multiple times throughout this book and make them talk to each other. I did enjoy their group of friends and despite all the serious stuff going on, I did laugh quite a bit at certain scenes. Now for the hard part: I lost someone close to me recently and the emotions all the characters went through in this book after tragedy struck felt so real to me. It's exactly what I went through and felt at times that I couldn't help but cry for almost the whole last half of the book. I loved all the scenes with Jace, Aubrey and their two little ones. Jace was really adorable with them and you could tell how much he loved his family. If you're thinking of reading this one, make sure you have a box of tissues handy!
Let me introduce you to Aubrey. She's a spunky gal who lives a full life. She loves her kids Jayden and Gracie and her boyfriend Jace.Aubrey had a rough childhood and when she was old enough she left her hometown and started over in Seattle.
I loved reading this book, it speaks of doubt in a relationship that has been strong, but then comes the rut. What do you do when you feel yourself slipping away? Do you stay and fight? Jace and Aubrey are in that moment of doubt. You know, things left unsaid, no time for intimacy, but there is still that feeling that you get when each of you walk into a room. There is still that spark, whats the problem? how do you get the spark to last longer, how do you find the time to ignite it when you responsibilities an kids in the mix. As I said in the beginning of this review I love this story because all though it is a story it rings true to what most couples deal with. Love that is left unattended brings about doubt and fear. In order to fight for Something Worth Saving you have to have a base from which to work with... You both have to want to fight for it. Jace and Aubrey have to overcome lots of other obstacles that make this book even more exciting to read. You have tons of suspense and fear to keep you glued to your e-reader. A beautiful story of Love, Family, Passion, and Unity. I loved it!
This book kinda surprised me. I was expecting a rather intense read. But what I got was more like a real life story that I think anyone who has been in a relationship for a long time can relate to.
This is the story of Jace and Aubrey. Two people who have been together for years, but life is getting in the way and they are beginning to drift apart. It can have been about anybody. They weren't billionaires, they aren't rock stars, they are just normal people trying to make a go of it in life.
Chelsea writes this story in such a way that I felt like the characters were talking to their best friends. I felt a connection to them right from the beginning. It's a story that can give hope to anyone who feels like their relationship might be falling apart.
Relationships are work. It's easy to go with the flow and just let life take you were it will. You have to work at keeping that spark alive. This inspirational book will help anyone struggling with their relationship know that they are not alone.
That's the story. The falling in love is easy. Years later is when shit really gets interesting."
This is the second book I've read from Chelsea Landon and I really like her style. Of course, anytime there is a fire fighter in a book, I get excited! The heroine, Aubrey, narrates as she "thinks", so it did take my a few chapters to become in tuned with her. However, the book settles in nicely and I enjoyed the story. The hero, Jace, even gets to narrate for several chapters. I loved the Chapter Titles and brief narrative - it drew me in from the beginning.
While I was frustrated with both Aubrey and Jace at times, I never doubted their love and devotion to one another. I can't imagine having two kids at such a early age. (I tried to keep that in mind.) I only wish they had communicated more. It was a heart warming story of never settling or taking love for granted.
