A major movie studio is making a summer blockbuster about Spider-Man, and the Ultimate wall-crawler swings by the set to give the producers a piece of his mind. But someone else is even hotter about being in the film than Spidey: Doctor Octopus, who just may shut the production down if he doesn't get final edit As the cameras roll, the real wall-crawler and Doc Ock go head-to-head behind the scenes Collects Ultimate Spider-Man #54-59.
A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.
We see a movie on Spidey being made and how thats affecting Pete and once he goes there what happens next, a battle with Dr Octopus and I love the way Bendis writes it, he make sit epic for sure but also shows how dangerous this old foe is and exploring the depths of the characters so well and then that convo between them on the plane just wow and I love the way Tobey and Avi are inserted here lol, makes for an even better read then and its almost perfect because of it and then big revelations with Gwen which will be a game changer going into future volumes! So definitely recommending this one!!
So much fun, and I'm just the right kind of nerd to enjoy all of that inside-baseball stuff with Avi Arad and Sam Raimi's in-universe version of the 2001 Spider-Man film.
Spiderman shows up to complain about a movie being made about him with a nod towards the Raimi/McGuire picture. It just gets worse for him in the usual tradition when Doctor Octopus shows up.
The resolution with Gwen Stacy felt off but the moviemaking inside jokes was amusing. Some good action scenes with Spidey and Octo. Other characters were mostly same old, same old but that's okay if you enjoy the repeat style characters as I do.

Ultimate Spiderman Hollywood was the sort of entertaining and amusing comic Bendis is known for. Set in the Ultimates universe, this Spiderman story has some real world tie-ins.
Spiderman comes under attack from Dr. Octavius. Their conflict literally takes them around the world. But, on top of this, it seems Sam Rami is making a Spiderman movie. The part with Spiderman on set talking to Toby McGuire was rather amusing. In fact, the vast majority of this comic was rather amusing. Bendis's humor works well with the wise cracking Spiderman. We also see Gwen Stacy get in on the big secret.
Good art and a good story make for a funny Spiderman volume. Nothing great, but an entertaining entry into my Spiderman collection.
Another great Comic so this time aunt May goes to see her mum in Florida and Gwen and Peter I left alone in the house the first part of this comic really cracked me up when they were talking about hanky-panky can we have Hanky but not panky can I have panky but not hanky lol that was cracking me the heck up which one is the one that gets us in trouble hanky or panky and then Peter says I think it was Peter he says I think it's hanky well it was just so funny like I said they were left alone and then guenat for her 150 because aunt May left them with 300 but it would not be a Spider-Man comic if there wasn't a bad guy and obviously there was again I'm just really enjoying reading these at the minute

This one was a ton of fun and I really enjoyed the meta humor and parallels to the original Spider-Man movie trilogy in this one. The story progressed in ways that I knew would eventually progress and the relationships with the characters are some of my favorite moments in this story still. Looking forward to what’s next!
Everyone knows! The meta plot here so nearly got annoying but ultimately remained a rather fun aspect of about the best volume of this run I have so far had the pleasure of reading
I like meta narratives but it has to be smart and fun, this one, it just comes off as so much self promotion that I just found it annoying, however wrapped around that terrible idea was a really fun Doc Ock story and some world changing stuff.
World: The art is still not my thing, weird faces. The world building on the other hand is a really mixed bag. As I said, I like meta narratives when they smart and witty, this one is just a huge promo and annoyed me especially with the huge focus on Avi Arad. Seriously it was just not fun at all. However on the flip side the building of Doc Ock and his story with the stuff with Gwen it was absolutely wonderful. Mixed bag.
Story: The meta narrative I did not like so I won't dwell on it. I did like the Doc Ock story it was done well the tension and the drama great, the banter was wonderful and the hatred so very real. It was really a fun action book for what it was. It was well written it's just the story did not lead itself for me to enjoy it. At the same time it was very much world changing with the stuff with Gwen so yeah that was great. Mixed bag.
Characters: I'm gonna skip the meta narrative as I did not enjoy it. I really like the tension and relationship we saw between Doc Ock and Peter, it was wonderfully written and the emotions real and interesting. I also really liked the Gwen stuff as it changes the status quo and I like that. We get a huge chunk of character development and it's great. The MJ house stuff was a bit convenient but oh well what can you do.
A great Doc Ock story and drama along with a terrible Avi Arad promo. Mixed bag.
Compared to the previous volume, this is a really light one. It nods to the Tobey Maguire Spider-man films, which made me laugh, and it resolves a hanging plot thread with Gwen Stacy which is just about the only emotionally significant bit. Loved the scene near the end with them all lying around on the bed talking -- such perfect teenagers.
Dr Octopus' role in this is genuinely sinister, and he seems to be getting less silly and more worrying as a villain each time.
I was introduced to Spiderman through the original movie trilogy so this incredibly meta take on the movie in the comics universe was right up my ally. Plus the fights with Doc Oc were awesome! of course, the amount of times he manages to escape are a little ridiculous, but who's counting? A bonus was the really great Gwen moment. I think she's my favorite character.
Znów to zrobił.
Polecam.
Doctor Otto Octavius has escaped from his imprisonment after revealing the psychic link between him and his metallic arms is unaffected by distance. Meanwhile Peter Parker discovers Hollywood director Sam Raimi is making a movie on the web slinger with Sea Biscuit star, Tobey Maguire playing our favorite hero. Spidey not only has to fight Doctor Octopus, but battle with the fact that he's not getting paid squat for a movie about himself!
This volume was pretty darn silly to me, but that really added to it's whole charm. When I read the initial premise for this volume's story I was honestly a bit skeptical about the whole movie aspect and then I saw the name "Sam Raimi". Not only did he get his own comic book cameo, but Avi Arad, Tobey Maguire, and Bruce Campbell did as well. Normally we kind of expect cameos like this in film but now comics? Now I wonder if we'll get to see Paul in the new Spider-Man movies (all jokes I swear).
I think the whole conflict with Doc Ock was pretty well done but man do I have a hard time believing they locked him in a normal prison after the whole ordeal last issue. This guy slaughtered a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and they just locked him up like a normal guy.
Gwen FINALLY discovering Peter's secret identity was such a nice twist. She's shown herself to be pretty clever and I'm honestly surprised it took her this long. Now all we need is Aunt May to find out...
Great volume though, really renewed my confidence in this series after the mess that was the previous issue. 16 more volumes to go.
A truly fantastic read. The premise of a movie about Spider-Man directed by Sam Raimi being made feels right at home in this run. Doc Ock makes for a fantastic foe and I loved how sour he clearly was about how he was going to be portrayed in the film. The big fight between he and Spidey is one of the best I've read in the whole series with tremendous action expertly drawn by Bagley; there's one double page spread of the two facing off which honestly blew me away a little.
Much much better than any of that however, is Gwen and Peter. I've adored having Gwen living with Peter and Aunt May these last few books and I knew eventually the penny would have to drop and she'd realise he's Spider-Man. Gwens confrontation was brillaintly written, and the reconciliation they have later with MJ was some of my favourite character writing ever. I just love How Peters homelife is written in Ultimate and I love his friends and family around him, and Volume 10 gives some of the very best of that.
To capitalize on the upcoming release of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, the Ultimate Spider-Man team takes a bit of a meta approach by having a film about Spidey being made as one of the core plot devices in the appropriately titled "Hollywood" arc. People like Avi Arad, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire make cameo appearances as the story follows Spidey being a bit salty about a film being made about him and not being paid a cent for his likeness being used. Doc Ock serves as the primary antagonist of this volume and he's none too pleased by the film either. A brutal fight between the pair takes Spidey all the way to Brazil, putting him in the hilarious predicament of having to find his way back to Queens. Meanwhile Gwen Stacy figures out Spidey's identity, causing a bit of a rift between Pete and Gwen. Fun, campy and appropriately dramatic, "Hollywood" is an enjoyable chapter in the ongoing Ultimate Spider-Man saga.
It rarely gets as meta as having Sam Raimi and Avi Arad in 2003 filming the first Spider-Man movie (with "Seabiscuit" star Toney Maguire!) and they end up spur of the moment filming what are in the real world the events of *Spider-Man 2* and this get their 545 million worldwide box office. And hey, they got Sam in his suit and tie as he always is on set!
This is mostly fun stuff, but as usual Bendis gets the emotional meat significantly from once source - Gwen Stacy - and it works out nicely. And of course Otto is such a ridiculous over the top spectacle of a villain here its hard not to find enjoyment from him. (I dont trust the ending though)
This was another fun volume to read with more of an adventure vibe to it, but the story wasn’t all that enticing. I think breaking the 4th wall with the Spider-Man movie being shot and even including the real actors/director was a weird choice, and Doc Oc’s hate for Spider-Man was overblown too.
But the best part was Gwen discovering Peter was Spider-Man. They could’ve easily turned that into a whole annoying storyline where she plotted revenge against him for thinking he killed her dad, which they teased, but I’m glad they didn’t. Her just accepting it was a great choice and made their relationship, along with MJ, so wholesome and fun to read.

Still mildly (very mildly) buggered by the occasionally overwhelming stupidity of teens and their drama, but this volume is a step up from the one prior to the Ultimate Six story. The teenage angst thankfully takes a backseat to an awesome fight between Doc Ock and Spidey, that ends with Spidey kidnapped and taken to Brazil. The fight is fun, the drama with Peter trying to rush back to New York before his Aunt May returns home from vacation is hilarious, and I even enjoy the tension between Peter and Gwen Stacy near the end. Good stuff all around, though I would've preferred to understand Doc Ock's plan better.
Once I started this volume I immediately had low expectations, but the humor shines through, countering what would be serious moments. Being kidnapped to name one. Balance that out with Spider-man stalking the set of the Spider-man movie, and you get the idea. Overall a great read, and for Doc OCS , I think third outing (the last time the volume before), he doesn't feel over used after getting an issue or two in (though you could say so and not be wrong, I hope they gave him a break after this volume)
This is one of my favorite arcs from Ultimate Spider-Man so far. I loved Doc Ock’s depiction and his fight with Spidey. There are some minor inconsistencies as, for example, Peter’s forced trip to Brazil (that was kind of pointless), but that’s just me trying to find reason in a comic book where a 15 year old boy fights a mad scientist with sentient mechanical arms. Overall, it’s such a fun read that you’re able to let any annoying detail pass by. This is certainly Bendis’s golden age. 4.5/5
Really tidy return to form for the series after the lacklustre ultimate six I guess. I don’t like how it took them so long to realise it was a good idea to destroy the arms earlier though.
I did like how this mirrored the movie or ‘the making’ of the movie haha. I thought it was really smart. It was also really nice to see with Spider-Tobes making an appearance.
Even tho doc ock would be my second favourite spidey villain, he’s been used heaps in the ultimate run of late. I hope we get some fresh blood or a more engaging battle next time.
One of my favorite storylines so far in the series. I love Dr. Octopus. He is such a great villain. A bit over the top in how we continues to make people trust him and how he is able to escape time and time again, but I love it.
Each time he returns I feel that he becomes more sinister(I have been waiting to use that word in a review since my Universal Studios trip).
The dynamics of characters of Peter, Mary, and Gwen continue to develop which leads to me to believe that something is about happen in the future. It is how these storylines go. I am getting excited to be caught off guard soon!
This is basically around the time Spider-man 2 the movie was coming out. During that time SPider-man was the BIGGEST thing. So in this story Peter is dealing with the fact Spider-man is being made into a movie. And look who comes along but Doc Ock to go along with the whole movie synergy thing. But it's actually the backstory of gwen and dealing with that storyline that makes this one worth reading anyway.
The Gwen stuff is 5 stars, while the rest is just okay. This was one of the weaker arcs in a otherwise amazing run. A 3 out of 5.
Marvel had this big Raimi movie called Spider-Man 2 coming out, so here's a story arc about Doctor Octopus breaking out of his prison and fighting Spider-Man on the film set of a big in-universe Spider-Man movie starring Toby Maguire! It's fun, lots of little jokes about Hollywood, and Bendis and Bagley use this as a chance to dive deeper into Gwen's character. Spider-Man "killed" her dad, and now he gets a movie made about him? It's a bit rushed, and the Spider-Man fight versus Doctor Octopus plays out like any other supervillain fight, but it's still a good volume.
