Thomas Jefferson, a middle school student, can't seem to focus in school. He is told he has ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, a condition that affects his ability to concentrate in class. With his widowed mom, a caring teacher, and his first potential girlfriend, Thomas comes up with a very creative solution to deal with his condition.
The intention behind this play is great, but dialogue summarizes and glosses over experiences. Dialogues between characters are short and cliche. I don’t know that the experience of ADD/ADHD is any clearer to a young audience watching than the generalities they already know and are exposed to.
Also, we don’t see TJ or his mother work through the challenges of ADD. Things are summarized and then we learn about meds. The work and the struggle are where the lessons are, and the audience doesn’t see any of them.
Major issue with Thomas Jefferson’s (main character’s name) crush being a girl named Sally. So careless.
Another problem that goes unexplored is the use of the word ‘normal.’
Potential in the idea, but very dissatisfying and problematic.
