Headlining BlackMag Con as the fantasy author duo Z.J. Grousant should have been the ultimate dream for Zacarias Joaquim and his boyfriend, Jonathon. If only headliner, ex-friend, and fellow indie romance fantasy author Nevaeh Nbada still talked to them. And if only Jonathon wouldn’t find a million ways to remind her of the reasons why she walked away. Will the magic of the convention help mend the hurts of the past?
This series is a spinoff of Wicked Moves. The series can be read on its own, however, it's enhanced by reading A Turn in the Air first.
Each book in the Hidden Desires series is interconnected and I highly recommend you read the series in order.
Joaquim and Jonathan are lovers and the co-authors of a popular fantasy series. They’re the headliners at a convention that will bring them face to face with Neveah, a fellow author and friend who they have a long history with.
I love the author’s exploration of the different facets of polyamorous relationships. Joaquim and Jonathan have so much love and respect between them, but also acknowledge that they both love and want Neveah in a way they weren’t ready for all those years ago. Of course, the chemistry between these three was filthy and I loved it because the author never holds back on the spice and kink.
I do wish the reason behind them falling out years ago was fleshed out a little more, as well as getting to see them be a couple for a few more chapters beyond the end of the convention. Given how long they’d been separated from Neveah, it would’ve added to the story to see how they made it work after therapy and hear them talk about this breeding kink they all had lmao.
TROPES: polyamory; second chance-ish; book convention; author heroes/heroine; lactation kink; breeding kink; mentions of surrogacy
TRIGGER WARNINGS: parental death (briefly mentioned, happens off page)
1st off Cunningham keeps creating these magical clubs, places, and events and making me sad they aren’t real or at least I don’t know where to find them. 2nd has Joaquim always been this dang sweet and cute? I’m gonna have to run it back on Jardel and A Turn in the Air and see if I missed this. Ok so this was like reality lite condensed down into to book speed. But I think it would have benefited from being just a touch longer or maybe if certain information was present earlier or more detailed. Because sometimes it seemed like everyone was over reacting. Naveah was an interesting fmc I’m honestly not sure how I feel about her, other than I loved the way her body was depicted and the way they appreciated it! Zac and Jon felt more solid to me and we love a man doing the work to better himself. Outside of that this was the sweetest kink story I think I’ve ever read. As usual somehow Mrs. Cunningham was all up a through my mental diary/fantasy Rolodex and then splashing it across a book. I truly love her for it though, cause that last scene 😮💨…sugah pie, honey bunches of-I’ll take my DP like that too, please and thank you. If anyone else is out there doing justice to polyamory the way this Queen is please slide me them recommendations. Getting closure on one of the running subplots in this book was a nice touch and fitting I think. The pace was tricky it was hot and heavy while being slow burn to. Idk, how she made that work. Anyway I wanted to be at BlackMag Con, I want to read the fantasy stories mentioned, I want any version of these dynamics I can get my greedy little (redacted) on, and I want to find these sweet, dirty, nasty men she creates!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Joaquim and Jonathan are looking to get back with the one that made their polyamorous relationship whole. After falling out with Naveah years ago the pair are looking to fix things and not only get their lover back but also their friend. This is an A.H. Cunningham book so you know the spice level is turned all the way up.
Leave it to AH Cunningham to introduce new kinks every single book 🤭
Joaquim is the people pleaser between the brothers and I wished he was front and center a bit more. Maybe that was the point that his approach sometimes gets lost in his family and his relationships because he's always thinking of others. I spent a lot of time not sure what caused the breakup and once it's revealed it felt like a sorry was not enough aka Jonathon needed to do a lot more groveling like A LOT MORE. It was kinda meta to read about authors and their process but overall some parts felt a bit disjointed. I'm still interested in the series because it feels like some stuff is going to go down but Joaquim was a little unfocused.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
CN: postpartum pain, lack of attribution, parental manipulation (narcissism), death, drug trafficking

I enjoyed that these characters were all writers! I’m usually not a fan of second-chance romances but I liked this. Joaquim, Jonathon, and Neveah all used to be friends/ writers together but ended on bad terms. Eight years later they meet up at a book event. Joaquim and Jonathon take this as a sign to right their wrongs with Nevaeh. This event requires them to be close in space and you know how that goes. Everything was resolved quickly but I wish there were more groveling from Jonathon. Each character was sexy as hell despite their shortcomings and each working on their issues to make sure their relationship would be solid was even sexier. I enjoyed the ride!
Fantasy co-authors Joaquim and Jonathan are headlining BlackMagCon. It's a dream come true, but both hold the painful memories of their past friendship with Nevaeh, also an author headliner at the same convention. Joaquim and Jonathan were determined to fix their rift, but it was going to be harder than they thought. None of them are the same person when their friendship ended 8 years ago, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. All are successful professionally, and have grown as content creators and personally. They've all done and gone through a lot, and as they maneuver the possible rekindling of their friendship over the course of a 4-day convention, they find out truths that could hinder that reconnection between them.
I loved Nevaeh's strength and confidence in who she was, and how she wasn't afraid to ask...no demand what she wanted. I adored the fierce love between Joaquim and Jonathan and the unconventional life they made together over the years. The vulnerabilities of all three of them were intriguing to observe. Their willingness to see and admit their role in the demise of their friendship, and how it may or not be possible to follow the dreams they had together many years ago was a testament to their maturity and growth. For them to begin and navigate the life they previously wanted is a huge undertaking, it was fascinating to see everything unfold. Some good, some not so good.
I loved how this story progressed. Joaquim was so adorable as he stole glances when he first saw Nevaeh. Jonathan and Naveah's stubborness was both bold and kinda cute. The heat between these three--separate and together--was intoxicating! The secondary characters were wonderful, and of course Joaquim's family is never far away. Interesting developments on that front. A. H. Cunningham continues to deliver beautiful, imperfect characters along with great storytelling.
Let me just start by saying this book makes me want to go a fantasy book event and y’all know I’m not a huge fantasy reader! I enjoyed this one and let’s be honest it’s A.H. Cunningham so that’s to be expected. It was definitely second chance and while it’s not super long it felt like a slow burn. Now I will say I didn’t get “rivals” from these three……and that could be because I didn’t feel like the issue was that big of a deal. I get why feelings were hurt but honestly I was annoyed it took them all so long to have a conversation. Like why would you all deny yourselves this beautiful dynamic, this love and passion that’s clearly something EVERYONE wanted. They were wasting time and getting on my nerves.
I love Joaquim, my sweet little freak. He was definitely a softy but when in the bedroom it was his show. I ate that up. Neveah, while I liked her, she kinda annoyed me. I just wanted her to assert herself with Joaquim and Jonathan. Like girl, you don’t see how you have ALL the power here?!? Go get what you want and what you deserve! Jonathan’s grumpy self was my favorite. He was prickly at first but man when he softened up….I LOVED IT!!!
I can’t tell yall about this one without mentioning the spice. If you’ve read A.H. before then you know she claims to write mild spice. Idk what’s mild about MMF, lactation and breeding kinks but, ok sure. I felt like I was sitting in the room with them. She painted a very accurate picture and I enjoyed each scene. This was a great continuation of the Hidden Desires series and I’m looking forward to the next one.
Thank you to A.H. Cunningham for the ARC…..all thoughts and feelings are my own.
I absolutely loved the fact that all of the characters were Black fantasy writers, as that is one of my favorite genres, and one in which representation is still lacking. I also love how the author incorporates different languages and cultures—isiXhosa is not one I've seen a lot, so I thought that was cool.
Clocking in at just over 200 pages, this was a quick read, but it also felt very rushed. The reason for the trio's fallout needed to be developed more considering it led to eight years of silence. Nevaeh forgave Jonathon entirely too quickly, and he had A LOT more apologizing to do. To be completely honest, I didn't care for him as much individually as I did Joaquim, but he did have his moments. I definitely felt more protective of Joaquim, especially as someone who also struggles with anxiety. Nevaeh helping him through it with the breathing exercise was dope though.
(Minor quibble re: Nevaeh as this is the second time I've seen this in a novel, but becoming a surrogate without having previously been pregnant is generally not a thing. So although the first one would have qualified her for the second, what qualified her for the first? Just something that stuck out to me from my own research.)
Leave it to A.H. Cunningham to bring the representation, but this one just fell a little flat to me.
thank you so much to A.H. for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review 💜 • • okay I’m hopping right in. y’all, the GROWTH of the characters in this book >>> there was so much love between them and though it took a minute for the whole issue to be aired out, the vulnerability and openness from all of them once it was…chef’s kiss.
I love that all of them are in/open to therapy. willing to do the work it will take to better themselves and make their relationship work. knowing that it’s okay to need help and seeking it. also chef’s kiss lol.
other than that…I’m glad they realized what position they had Joaquim in, acknowledged it, and gave him the support and care he deserved. because he was very much so neglecting himself. I know a lot of us can also relate to that.
AND OMG…the news after they got home?! I did NAWT expect that at that moment. now I’m wondering how the siblings will navigate this. guess we’ll learn more in the next book 😁
if y’all haven’t already checked A.H. Cunningham out, I highly recommend you do. she has quite a few books out right now and she has another one coming April 23rd! get into itttt. thank you again A.H. 😚
Joaquim and Jonathan are lovers and partners, a fantasy writing duo headlining a convention. It should be the highlight of their careers and lives. But it pales in comparison to seeing her again--Nevaeh, their former writing partner and the one who got away.
Complicated feelings tore them apart, but can some soul baring and soul snatching pull them back together? Can she forgive them and see that she’s their missing piece? The more they speak their hearts, the easier their bodies align. And when they fill each other up (literally), forever is easier to see. This story knocked me over. The passion, the angst, the romance and eroticism. Joaquim was a sweet baby, who just wanted his loves together--Jonathan was a tough nut to crack but he showed his vulnerability when it mattered. And Nevaeh was the key to it all. The love and connection was clear, even through the lust. The kink will make you fan your face--hot isn’t the word. With magic in the air and love as the foundation, healing and redemption can happen. It was so good.
Oh myyyyyy, where to start?! First of all, it was an absolute joy to read this from start to finish. Just an FYI, I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book & am voluntarily sharing my unbiased and honest review.
Joaquim is such a sweet soul, considerate and always thinking of his significant others. Jon is a lovable grump whose temperament kinda made me side-eye him at times. It was the fact that he’s in therapy and doing the inner work to grow as a person and partner that made me give his character a chance. Then there is Nevaeh, the one that got away! She’s unapologetically stunning, a no nonsense queen and I am enamored with the way she was written and loved on by her men.
I love how intricately Miss Cunningham paints this polyamorous love story between these three characters. Delectable kink is sprinkled throughout these pages so don’t listen to her lies of this book being mild and wholesome! It’s anything but that! 😂
I love the blerd rep of nerdy Black people doing sci-fi/fantasy shxt, attending cons, writing books, AND being successful at it!
Ugh, I love these characters so much and want much much more of them and many more pages to dive into. 😩
I can’t even pick a kink scene that was my favorite because I kinda lost my mind over them all. Thee way I wanna be stretched between these men and filled up I—…*loses service* 🤭💦
Anyhow, go read this book immediately it’s so damn delicious! I can’t wait for Master Q’s debut.
I’m not a prude, but I don’t typically enjoy poly books. I only read ones from authors I trust. My hesitation is because I feel some authors don’t give enough attention to all people in the relationship. A. H. manages to give us insight into all three partners’ feelings and focuses on how they balance each other out. I enjoyed how this story spent more time in restoration vs. conflict, making me root for the relationship to work. The sex scenes were excellent, exploring a kink that I don’t often read. Neveah was wonderfully written: brilliant, beautiful, magical. Joachim was a dream and Jonathan was an indulgence. Thank you for this one and I’m more excited for the next!!
🙌🏼 Black Poly Romance. Second chance. Breeding & Lactation kink👀🤭😮💨 representation: 🇿🇦 🇧🇷 AHHH OMFGGG IT WAS SO GOOD! Starts off with a couple who lost their friend years back and reunite with her at a book convention for Black creators. Now that they have grown and are actively healing in therapy they are trying to fix things and work out their relationship 🥹 seeing the way they cared for each other and checked in constantly with their state of mind, anxiety and triggers was everything 😭 they were just as flawed as any of us and seeing that was beautiful tbh! Which is what you will always get with A.H. Cunningham! Now I will be patiently waiting on João’s book!!
i loveeed thw brazilian rep (def feeling really seen) their communication really got me, how open n this wanting to make it work, i enjoyed every minute of this book (it’s REALLY sexy n with a lot of smut)
Neveah was mildly annoying. I love Joaquim and Jonathan was a loveable asshole (read the book, it will make sense). Their triad was wild. They were so in tuned with each other.
The part with Joaquim’s pops threw me off a bit. Hope there’s more about him in the next book.
Neveah being Zulu and her aunt being a spiritual person is the representation I never knew I needed . I loved the little tidbits of Zulu throughout the book . Miss Ma'am you did indeed devour that .
I do think every time I read an AH Cunningham book it gets better and better. The way this book was written is amazing. I felt for all parties and understood where their friendship went wrong and how they fixed it. Amazing.
This was a good story, but Jonathan was not my cup of tea and I wished there was more about Joaquim since it was his story. Glad that therapy was discussed as a way for the relationships to work because Jon was honestly annoying.
Joaquim Is such a sweet spirt and I hate that he is the bridge for everyone around him. The people pleaser in him holds everyone together and I don’t think people see just how much he takes on while not getting the same respect love or consideration as he gives others. Now how he ends up loving Johnathon I don’t know but they are so opposite its not even funny. The two make an odd pair but complement each other so well. Then you add in Neveah. She too is such a sweet girl. When you get the back story of why this was so hard on everyone it makes you want them to win even more. I swear these books are nothing like the cover and I was here for this second chance why choose. The only thing was some things didn’t add up for me so some things felt off brushed over why others where drawn out.
Joaquim and Jonathon are partners in a solo polyam arrangement. They are also the author/illustrator duo behind a popular fantasy book. While attending a book convention they where they planned to woo Navaeh “the-one-that-got-away” back into their lives. Would their efforts be in vain? Can they talk it out with Navaeh and have her forgive them?
There was a great deal to unpack and I wanted so much more. It was screaming in my face. Jon’s trauma felt like it needed more exploration. Navaeh’s feelings needed more exploration, and I wanted so much more from Joaquim’s familial woes. I still enjoyed it, even when I wanted more groveling (there can never be enough groveling) and about 100 or so pages of exploring everyone’s trauma and how they heal together. The setting was cool though, loved the idea of this being set in a book convention that celebrates Black folks in Lit.
Would I still recommend it? Absolutely, I really enjoyed getting to know these characters and the setting they were put in, the forced close proximity 😮💨 emm also what happened at the club 😳👀.
What you will find in this book: 🖤 Black love 👬🏿🧍🏾♀️Polyamory rep 🖤Second chance love 🖤 Forced Close Proximity 🧠 Anxiety rep 🌶️ A good deal of spice, just read the content warnings and decide if this is for you
