He’s back!

That was the first thought that crossed Cindy Biggs’ mind when she heard of the brutal triple-murder in her hometown of Coleman. Yes, the awful crime was nearly identical to the one performed during her hard-scrabble childhood at the time of the Great Depression. And, strangely enough, it had taken place in the same place… the ruins of the old tobacco barn near the edge of Green Creek.

But this was 2014, not 1936. Cindy was no longer an innocent nine-year-old child, but an elderly woman who used her gift of second sight to assist the police every now and then. And the man who been mostly responsible for that mass killing in ’36, Bully Hanson, had been dead and in the grave for seventy-seven long years.

Still she could not shake the overpowering feeling that he was involved in the massacre of three people and that the thirteen year old boy suspected of committing the murders was completely innocent. The only way she could be certain that her suspicions were more due to intuition than senility was to return to Bedloe County . And, with the help of her granddaughter Beth, revisit the most devastating period of her life… and hope that, somehow, someway, the most evil man she had ever known had not slipped the bonds of death and come back to wreak havoc once again…

Ronald Kelly was born and raised in the hills and hollows of Middle Tennessee. He became interested in horror as a child, watching the local "Creature Feature" on Saturday nights and "The Big Show"---a Nashville-based TV show that presented every old monster movie ever made ---in the afternoons after school. In high school, his interest turned to horror literature and he read such writers as Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson, and King. He originally had dreams of becoming a comic book artist and created many of his own superheroes. But during his junior year, the writing bug bit him and he focused his attention on penning short stories and full-length novels. To date, he has had thirteen novels and twelve short fiction collections published. In 2021, his extreme horror collection, THE ESSENTIAL SICK STUFF, won a Splatterpunk Award for Best Collection.

He currently lives in Brush Creek, Tennessee with his wife, young'uns, and an ultra-hyper Jack Russel named Toby.

A rather brisk, if somewhat predictable and paint-by-numbers little horror thriller. Kelly has a real talent for evoking the rural Tennessee atmosphere with which he is obviously familiar. The plotting is a bit staid, with periodic forays into some rather visceral gore and violence, though the sharp pacing does elevate it a bit. I did feel that some of the dialogue was a bit stilted, but again, Kelly's greatest strength is in his ability to impart a very palpable menace to a pastoral, rustic setting.

In all, a solid midlist horror title. I knew where it was going rather early on and there were a few cringeworthy moments, but the quality setting and pervasive creepiness kept me turning pages and feeling genuinely good about reading the book. I have more unread Ronald Kelly titles on my shelf and I will certainly be cracking them open sooner than later.

Restless Shadows is the best kind of sequel, one that expands what readers loved about Hindsight while standing on its own two legs for readers who stumbled upon this one separately. There's quite a bit of time passed between the two novels, giving us glimpses of old characters, new characters, and even how the landscape has changed from the awful events of Hindsight. Kelly's books always manage to provide an inviting comfort that gives way to godawful things happening between the covers and Restless Shadows is no exception.
