PT Este volume marca o início de um novo ciclo, agora com um novo argumentista ao leme.
Confesso que estava algo apreensivo, mas a escrita de Yves Sente rapidamente dissipou as minhas dúvidas. Ele traz um novo fôlego à série, que por vezes já dava sinais de estar a repetir uma fórmula algo gasta. Neste volume, seguimos Jolan numa nova aventura, onde são introduzidas várias personagens bastante interessantes. É uma narrativa envolvente, que prende o leitor do início ao fim.
A arte de Grzegorz Rosiński continua irrepreensível — e arrisco dizer, cada vez melhor.
Tudo indica, portanto, que o futuro de Thorgal está em boas mãos.

I must admit I was a bit apprehensive, but Yves Sente’s writing quickly put my doubts to rest. He brings fresh energy to the series, which at times had started to show signs of relying on a worn-out formula. In this volume, we follow Jolan on a new adventure, where several intriguing characters are introduced. It’s an engaging story that hooks the reader from beginning to end.
Grzegorz Rosiński’s artwork remains flawless — and I dare say, better than ever.
All signs point to a bright future for Thorgal.

Po zmianie scenarzysty spodziewałem się nieco świeżości i faktycznie czuć ją w fabule, ale ten album cierpi na ponadprzeciętną ekspozycyjność. Nie ma za bardzo miejsca na inteligencję czytelnika, wszystko na tacy w opisach i dialogach. Graficznie "Ja, Jolan" to kontynuacja "malarskiego" stylu zapoczątkowanego w poprzedniej części i muszę przyznać, że podoba mi się ten kierunek

Jolan en jeune adulte est maintenant le personnage principal de la série. Les épreuves qui constituent cet album sont intéressants. Nous sommes introduits dans ce premier album dont le scénariste n'est plus Jean Van Hamme mais remplacé par Yves Senté (que j'ai découvert il y a une dizaine d'années avec les nouveaux Black et Mortimer). J'aime bien le produit qui en résulte pour le moment.

Thorgal comics are a lot of fun. Great art with stories that take you into an imaginative world but never leave you at a loss in terms of continuity, backstory, etc. Set in a fictional viking world, there's a strong fantasy/norse mythology element but it's always grounded in a studied plausibility. You can tell the writer(s?) and artists are familiar with longships and that sort of thing.

With Thorgal having escaped from Odin’s curse the focus of the series now falls on Jolan. Leaving his family behind, Jolan travels with Manthor to the Betwixt on the understanding that he is destined for great things. Manthor, however, has been careful in his choice of words. Too late, Jolan learns he only may be destined for great things – to achieve them he must compete against others of his age.
Back in Thorgal’s village Aaricia and Wolfcub take the news of Jolan’s departure hard. Desperate for news, Aaricia seeks out a seer deep in the forest where she hopes to learn something of Manthor, and of Jolan’s fate. What she learns is disturbing news indeed.
Meanwhile, in the Betwixt, Jolan must decide to work with or against the other competitors as they face various trials and dangers. He’s encouraged to ignore the examples set by Thorgal and seek his own path, but that may not be an easy thing to do.
As the first non-Van Hamme tale, new writer Sente puts his mark on the world of Thorgal by expanding existing lore and introducing new characters and threats. Although less brutal than the average Thorgal story, there’s still plenty for fans of the previous books to get their teeth into. No doubt many would not even notice the difference if the creators’ names weren’t on the cover. Personally, I’d have liked to have seen more character development for Jolan as he struggled to come to grips with his new role, but with so many other new characters to follow and two storylines to impart, there’s little time for that. Here’s hoping that improves going forward.
As always, Rosinski is the glue that holds it all together. He rises to every challenge presented by the writer as he puts the flesh on the bones of this fantastical history. This remains one of my favourite books and I’m intrigued as to where Sente will take it next. With several more books lined up for release, we may not have to wait long to find out.

Dit album is het eerste met een andere scenarist dan Van Hamme. Yves Sente neemt het stokje van Van Hamme over concentreert zich om Jolan die met vier andere jongeren een proeve van bekwaamheid moet afleggen, waarbij de suggestie wordt gewekt dat maar één kan winnen. Dit verhaal doet daarom vagelijk denken aan 'The Hunger Games', dat overigens pas een jaar later verscheen. Ondertussen komt Aaricia meer te weten over de geheimzinnige Manthor...
Dit verhaal lijkt een overigens geslaagde poging om het verhaal wat te verjongen en zet de in 'Kriss de Valnor' ingezette nieuwe verhaallijn voort, met nieuwe implicaties voor Thorgal en de zijnen. Heel verfrissend is dat Yves Sente, in tegenstelling tot zijn voorganger de spanning erin weet te houden zonder met dood en verderf te strooien.
Dit verhaal lijkt een overigens geslaagde poging om het verhaal wat te verjongen en zet de in 'Kriss de Valnor' ingezette nieuwe verhaallijn voort, met nieuwe implicaties voor Thorgal en de zijnen. Inizia l'avventura in solitaria di Jolan, con un gruppo di giovani che condividono lo stesso destino: la prospettiva di veder realizzate le loro potenzialità. O il rischio di perdere tutto. Ancora non tutti i comprimari sono a fuoco, ma la storia è molto gradevole.

Pues me ha parecido un soplo de aire fresco para la serie. Se centra, como su propio nombre indica, en Jolan y nuevos aventureros. Buen cómic de fantasía.

Afin d'obtenir un destin exceptionnel, Jolan doit affronter les épreuves du mystérieux Manthor. Un album qui redonne un peu de vie à une série qui s'enlise.

Jolan enters a series of trials to find out if he is the chosen one to lead the armies against the gods of Asgard. This is an excellent young adult piece with beautiful art, showing a new direction for the series and a coming of age story for Jolan.

Grzegorz Rosiński wchodzi już na wysoki poziom ze swoim malarskim stylem, natomiast nowy scenarzysta, Yves Sente, niestety podejmuję fatalną decyzję i spycha Thorgala na boczny tor a centralną postacią czyni Jolana. Całkowicie nie rozumiem tej decyzji, zamiast dać Jolanowi własną serię, tworzy się tu całe wątki i postaci, z których ledwo 2 tygodnie po lekturze właściwie niewiele pamiętam.

Premier volume scénarisé par Sente. C'est plutôt réussi, même si le côté un peu trop "je fais comme mon papa" de Jolan est parfois agaçant.
n'en reste pas moins une bonne histoire qui poursuit magnifiquement la série. Puis bon, Thorgal est plus le héros, mais on le voit encore. Ouf !
