The story started out as an okay read, but as the story progressed and was able to see Deborah's honesty, integrity, and abiding to the law of Moses for a blood avenged case--her advice was legitimate and acknowledged real facts of greed and illegal acts which would be handled according to custom. This helped me see her divine calling and assignment as well as mines more clearly now.
She was divinely appointed and anointed for a calling, where others sought after her wise counsel even though she wasn't Israel's shaphat (judge). The talk of the land, came to her for judgment and dispute their cases based on the law of Moses. She didn't deny her calling since there wasn't any wise leader in the land and justice neglected dearly. She had a husband, who didn't want her to take this office, but she refused to disobey God. She didn't want to change God's will, or her ultimate journey to be Israel's shaphat. She bore him no sons as years passed, he had to accept her divine assignment. Her choice was clear: obedience to her husband or obedience to God.
