Cheryl Peyton was born and raised in Chicago. Prior to writing books, she had pursued several varied professions that have all influenced her plots and characters.

Even as a young child, Cheryl developed an interest in writing. Her mother, an editor of Young Adult Fiction, would read to her from galleys and then analyze the writing style with her.

Do the conversations sound natural? Are you interested in the story? Can you keep the characters straight?

After college, her first job was as a caseworker on Chicago's south side, followed by a career as an interior designer on Chicago's North Shore.

Her third profession was as a paralegal. Assisting in court, she became acquainted with rules of evidence and courtroom procedures, while honing her writing skills working on legal briefs.

Her series of Alex Trotter cozy mysteries features the impulsive, nosy tour operator/amateur detective who escorts groups for fun and relaxation. Unfortunately, these trips become ill-fated vacations when murder intrudes on the itinerary.

Ms. Peyton has also written a thriller about the attack on a nuclear weapons convoy by a ragtag gang who succeed in stealing a warhead despite their ineptness. Her one biography is an uplifting story of a young woman victimized by paralytic polio just prior to the development of the Salk vaccine.

Ms. Peyton now lives near Knoxville, in Loudon, Tennessee with her husband Jim and their Havanese dog, Cody.

MURDER ON THE BERMUDA QUEEN by Cheryl Peyton

A cozy mystery on a cruise ship, the world of shady art dealers and a very dead body.

Travel agent Alex trotter scores a big commission by being chosen to orchestrate an old friend’s wedding aboard a posh cruise ship. No one would suspect an innocent few days on the ocean and then docked in Bermuda would lead to any mischief. But when Alex and her boyfriend, Detective Arlie Tate, involve themselves in a trip, anything can happen.

After meeting the totally dysfunctional family of bridegroom and big time art dealer, Victor Garza, you can’t help but wonder how long it will take before someone kills their sibling or parent. Begin with Victor almost having a hundred pound potted tree fall on his head, or that of his younger wife, Jasmine. But the prime suspects of this attempted murder all seem to have reasonable alibis. Soon after that incident, Victor’s body is found stuffed into a laundry cart, strangled with Jasmine’s distinctive scarf. As Arlie volunteers to help out with the investigation (and Alex naturally tags along) alibis are solid, but clues are at a premium.

Then a caustic art critic gets tossed into a fountain…then falls on a lighthouse staircase…and finally takes a header down a tall spiral staircase on the ship, and ends up in a coma. Three accidents? The same killer(s)? Different assailants? The intent is evident, but clues and physical evidence aren’t getting any more plentiful.

In classic amateur investigator fashion Alex makes a big mistake in talking at the wrong time and ends up in bigger trouble with the killer(s). Can Arlie save her bacon? Can Alex save herself? You’ll have to wait until the very end to find out.

Lots of interesting information is scattered around about the art works being auctioned off on the cruise ship as well as a snazzy travelogue over the island of Bermuda. LOTS of atmosphere there. I felt like walking into the Hog Penny Pub in Hamilton for pint of English bitters.

Jessica Fletcher, watch out. Alex Trotter could take over as Cozy mystery queen.

I really enjoy Cheryl's writing, especially her "Alex Trotter" mysteries. Very like Agatha Christie, with just enough intrigue and mystery without all the blood and gore that other contemporary mysteries seem to include. Easy to read, keeps your interest all the way! Note to the readers of this review: this is the second of the other novels in the series that I have/am currently reading. So, this review has some comparisons to the other novels I have read in the series.

So far, this is my favorite book in the series. The main factor in that opinion is that there were many characters in the novel that had a motive for killing the victim. However, I didn't like that so many of the characters were eliminated as suspects, especially so soon in the investigation. On the other hand, I kind of understand the author's reasoning behind it because if that had not have been the case, the novel would have went on forever.

I also like this novel best because the killer was not at all who I expected! I loved this so much because of the contrast between this and Murder in Margaritaville, which I read first. This factor made me like the author so much more!

One thing that I've read so far about the series is that there is usually a side mystery/suspicious event and it was much more well done in this novel compared to Murder in Margaritaville. I loved it so much more because the side mystery connected with the main mystery which I thought was genius!

There was also a big plot twist that I didn't see coming!

In conclusion, from everything I e read so far in the series, this novel is by far my current favorite. Especially in comparison the Murder in Margaritaville!
