Rate this book
Wherever rock star Scott Mettle goes, tons of women line up, hoping for a chance to catch his attention. But throughout his life, he's only had eyes for one woman: his high school sweetheart, Ashley Lawford. A secret that neither knew about destroyed the sweet, soul-shattering connection they shared that left both jaded and cynical when it comes to matters of the heart. Scott went on to write countless #1 songs and Ashley scored a role on one of television's most popular shows. But no relationship compared to the innocent romance they shared during that magical last month in high school. Now, fifteen years later, they cross paths once again. And neither is prepared for the electrifying desire that overtakes them. They fight the pain of days gone by, but the lacerating truths that ripped their relationship apart returns with astonishing force. Both are certain they'll never find another that arouses the scintillating passion in their hearts. But can they overcome the agony of the past...to ensure a lifetime of happiness?

One More Chance, Book #3 of the Bedford Falls series, by Sydney Bristow appears to have been previously released under a different name/series/book cover/author back in Jan. 2014. (Falling with You: The Lawfords series by Steven Slavick). I stumbled across this while researching Goodreads to confirm the number of pages. I also discovered the same thing has occurred with Books 1 & 2. So, folks, read the book synopsis closely to make sure you haven’t already read these books.

Now on with my review. If you don’t like a romance where a misunderstanding leads to a 15 year separation, you are going to want to stay away from this one. Ditto, if you also don’t like a lot of internal dialog/indecisiveness. There was a whole lot of inward perspective/thinking among themselves trying to work out their past and present feelings towards each other. Combined with the whiplash effect of the main couple going back and forth on whose fault the separation was and whether to forgive/forget/apologize or move on, it did make it somewhat tiresome at times.

Surprisingly, a big part of this book was spent on their teen age romance. So in the beginning it felt more like a teen/young adult read. Eventually, it did fast forward to 15 years later. He was a hard rock musician who was more famous for his songwriting than his two platinum albums but was hoping to start performing again using his own songs. She was a supporting actress on a popular TV show and had some success in some other productions. But at age 30, she knew her career was likely on a downslide so was writing a TV script on the side as a back-up plan. So naturally those factors lead to uncertainty/insecurity regarding their careers, as well.

The heroine was also dealing with a big family reveal on her graduation day that was one of two reasons why she packed up and left in the first place, with the fall-out leaving a huge rift within her family. Incredulously, her siblings were not told. That I found hard to believe. Then there was also a surprise plot twist near the end that linked the hero’s family with the heroine, which was why her father never approved of her dating the hero in the first place. Again, a rather huge “what was the chance of that happening” scenario. It certainly explained a lot, however.

This NetGalley reviewer did take a chance requesting an ARC for this book and found it to be an average to good, engaging read. Frankly, I’m a sucker for a rock band romance where the hero doesn’t cheat on the heroine. I should also mention I expected the hero to be 100% at fault and have to work hard to win his girl back. I was actually disappointed that wasn’t the case. The heroine was the one that basically acted too impulsively here. Of course, they do get one more chance at their HEA and everything finally works out.

One more chance is the third book in the Bedford Falls Novel series, a standalone, and my first from Sydney Bristow. Despite the third person narrator that I usually am not fond of it worked for this. I felt like there was a lot of potential but ultimately this one feel a little flat. I'm a sucker for rockstars and had high expectations from the blurb. I think the main thing that bothered me was that they were only together for a short time before they were separated for fifteen years. Their breakup also seemed to be the root of all their problems for fifteen years. Would they have had more success had they stayed together? It seems like they believe they would have. I don't understand why neither of them could move on. Come on it was a month, there are other cool people out there. Yes they shared a connection and I really liked their time together in high school however it got too dramatic towards the end. Towards the end, a lot felt rushed and we didn't get much during their time apart. What saved this story for me was Scott; he was very funny and amazing, witty banter is always a plus for me.
It did keep me thoroughly entertained and I couldn't put it down. It's a good enough story, the writing is good, it's different from the usual story lines of this genre and it's light reading. All good things, I would recommend as an in between book because it's fairly short and sweet.

Thank you!

For most of the book I enjoyed both the writing and the characters, especially main heroine Ashley; I could see her as the type of girl I’d have a crush on in high school. She’s almost raped by the football hero cliché, only to be saved by the brooding musician hero cliché, who then makes a great impression on her taciturn dad until he finds out the guy’s name, at which point she is never to see him again.
By the time we get to the second half, fifteen years later, two more clichés of romance novels—misunderstandings and psycho chicks—have reared their ugly, heavily-made-up faces.
For me the best laugh was the auction scene that had the brothers discussing Disney princesses—although the whole thing started with Jessica Rabbit—but after Gabe pontificates on Elsa I felt outraged that Merida wasn’t included.
On the other hand, the worst moment came right out of the Writing Romances formula: everything is great, the happy couple is together. . . and then the writer makes circumstances that fuck everything up with another girl innocently where she shouldn’t be. WHY? WHY? Because it’s in the formula. And maybe the book wouldn’t have been long enough otherwise. That dropped my rating of a novel that features really good writing but less so on plot.

A romance with Ashley and Scott growing up before our eyes. No, I did not read the first two books in this series, but found a complete wonderful novel of growing up with secrets, heartache, love, misconceptions, and abuse that formed lives for years of two different households for the H and h in this story. I thought reading the first part it was a story for teenagers, but found that it extended to over 15 years and a growing process that formed lives due to those lies and secrets. Ashley had a lot of growing up to do and it took her a long time to do it. Scott was such a strong character and the heartache of his life had me stopping a few times to wipe tears during my reading. That said, I loved Scott's attitude and his strong constitution to make his life better than what he was given. "One More Chance" has been out for a while and I would recommend it for everyone's reading list or bookshelf. I requested this book on Reading Deals and was gifted a copy asking for my honest opinion. This is mine. 4.5 Stars!

I really wanted to like this. The synopsis sounded great, with the young lovers separated by a misunderstanding coming together after fifteen years, but the reality left me underwhelmed. Ashley really really annoyed me, she needed to grow up! Yes some of the things that happened sucked, but her reaction to events both in the past and the present were worthy of a soap opera! Scott remained in love with her for fifteen years and for the life of me I couldn't work out why. Yes she and Scott felt this incredible connection, but there was nothing on the page to really justify the torch he held for her.
All in all I was left disappointed which was a real shame as this was a story with a lot of potential.

Ashley and Scott had a troubled relationship from the time they split up after high school graduation until they reunited much later in their lives. Secrets held from them and from each other made their lives more complicated. When they meet as adults, their pasts hold them back from starting anew.

The story was well defined with a lot of angst and tears that made you feel for them and hope that they could overcome these issues. I felt the ending was too abrupt considering the time spent on their miscommunications and things that held them from each other.

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The story started off well. I understood the direction of the story liked the characters and was looking forward to more. Scott has used all the heartache of his past in launching a successful singing and songwriting career. Ashley also had success in her professional life but in my opinion she seemed to be drifting. I don't think she was sure of herself or what she wanted out of life. In all honesty I think Scott deserved better. I was sympathetic to all these two people had faced but I did not really feel a connection with the story.

One month before her senior year was over, Ashley met the love of her life Scott. Scott was a guitarist and he loved Ashley back.
I loved the twists and turns of this story. It was excellent. The ups and downs kept you reading to see what happened next. Scott and Ashley were awesome characters as were the rest of the characters. I loved the story and highly recommend.

I loved it from the very beginning and couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Strong characters and great story line. You will love the story between Scott and Ashley and the twist and turns that they go through for their love for one another.
