original 1981 review - A novelisation of the first few episodes of the TV show (and another great buy from my school Bookworm club), this follows Tucker and his friends as they start their new school life at Grange Hill. Great fun.
2018 re-read: The TV series began in 1978 and I was an avid fan from the start, though I didn’t actually go to comprehensive until 1980 (when this was first published), so I’ve always had a soft spot for Tucker & Co (my era of characters). This novelisation, by the reliable Robert Leeson, appears to be an original story (I haven’t seen that first or second series in a long time), though it does assume a knowledge of the show because various adventures are mentioned in passing but never explained. All of the main characters get a storyline, some briefer than others and Cathy draws the short straw because, even though her strand links the police to the school, it effectively concludes off-page as if Leeson had run out of steam with it. The locations are well used (and very much of their time, especially the tenements and unsupervised building sites) the Christmas period is nicely detailed, there’s a fantastic wheelchair chase and although characterisation is brief (luckily I remembered most of them) it does the job well. I remember reading this again and again as a kid and, as an adult, re-reading it after 38 years, I had just as much fun with it. Great stuff.
2024 re-read - great fun.
