Ann Matthews Martin was born on August 12, 1955. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, with her parents and her younger sister, Jane. After graduating from Smith College, Ann became a teacher and then an editor of children's books. She's now a full-time writer.

Ann gets the ideas for her books from many different places. Some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings. Many are written about contemporary problems or events. All of Ann's characters, even the members of the Baby-sitters Club, are made up. But many of her characters are based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows, and other times she simply chooses names that she likes.

Ann has always enjoyed writing. Even before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother to write down for her. Some of her favorite authors at that time were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. They inspired her to become a writer herself.

Since ending the BSC series in 2000, Ann’s writing has concentrated on single novels, many of which are set in the 1960s.

After living in New York City for many years, Ann moved to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York where she now lives with her dog, Sadie, and her cats, Gussie, Willy and Woody. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and needlework. Her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children.

I was sad when she broke her arm roller skating. I couldn’t believe she asked to roller skate when she had her cast on. Her dad said no.

Mom's Thoughts:
The Little Sister series continues with Karen breaking her wrist while she was roller skating. The interaction between Kristy and Karen is endearing and I appreciate that these books are bringing so much joy to my little one. She really likes this book!

Daughter's Thoughts:
This book is just as good as the first. They're both amazing. Karen's mom and dad are divorced and she has a stepsister who is really nice. Karen thinks her neighbor is a witch—which is really funny—and she has a cool friend named Hannah. My favorite thing about the book is that Karen is really funny. She makes me laugh.

Karen’s Roller Skates
Karen is outside with her friend Nancy Dawes and her brother Andew. She has new skates and we find out she’s a bit of a dare-devil. She tells us all the things she can do (go forwards, go backwards-but not so fast-, turn, and attempt to do any trick she sees-tho she’s not supposed to-). She also tells us what she wears when she skates (a red headband, red and white striped socks, a red jersey, and wrist bands). IT’s not long before Nancy’s mom calls her inside for dinner and Karen and Andrew have to leave to go to her dad’s.

*(Ummm why does Karen have to rip Tickly in half? I thought Watson was a billionaire? Surely a toy called “Tickly” can’t cost *that* much). Karen says good morning to Moozie and goes outside to try her new trick. She also doesn’t have skates or a skating outfit for both houses. (Again why?). Elizabeth tho asks her to walk Shannon. Karen has an idea. She gets Andrew to hold Shannon’s leash while he rides his tricycle. Then Karen skates beside them. Karen sees a hump and sails over it. After a while they head back to their driveway. Karen asks Andrew if he wants to see a trick. He says sure. She gets two coffee cans. Andrew tells her maybe she shouldn’t. Karen makes the jump but then falls and breaks her wrist. (She forgot her wrist bands and decided she didn’t need them).

Elizabeth calls the doctor and she tells her Dr. Delancamp wants Karen to go to the hospital. They tell Kristy to stay with David Micheal but she refuses and says she’s going. So, Watson and Kristy take Karen to the hospital. Elizabeth tells her not to try to be brave. Scream and give the doctor a fit if she wants to. (That’s a first. Most parents would have told her NOT to. I cut my toe the other day and my mother told me to stop complaining when I just said it was bleeding. You would have thought I was screaming and carrying on).

Karen is sent to the Xray room to wait for the bone doctor. She’s taken there in a wheelchair. Kristy is allowed to go with her while Watson fills out forms. Kristy says she wants to go because she loves hospital stuff. Karen thinks she’s crazy and so do I. Tom introduces himself as the guy taking pictures and the picture taking begins. When it’s over Karen is taken back to her father.

Dr. Humphrey gives Karen a shot to numb the pain. Then he puts her fingers in some kind of tube. It shows the bones going back into place. He then makes her a cast. Then Tom takes some more pictures to make sure everything goes back in place. Karen is then given a sling so her arm won’t feel so heavy. Then they’re sent home. Karen’s not a little sleepy from the shot. She thinks about how she’ll be able to do things like button her buttons with a cast on.

When Karen first gets home everyone caters to her. Watson carries her inside. Andrew, David Micheal, Charlie, and Sam have set up a special place for her. David Micheal changes the channel when she says she wants to watch something and Charlie gives her a candy bar. But this wears off pretty quickly by dinner, Andew doesn’t go get her coloring book and Elizabeth makes her sit at the table. By the time she has to go to bed, she’s irritable.

That morning, Karen gets dressed on her own. To prove to David Micheal she can do anything, she also makes herself toast and butters it. She can’t tho use the can opener to feed Boo Boo. She says she can also skate but her dad says no. No skating for a long time. Plus, they have another appointment with her doctor. So, it’s back to the hospital.

So, Karen, Watson, and Andew head over to ER. They’ll be meeting with Dr. Humphrey again. Karen people watch during the wait. A girl comes in with a burned hand (screaming). An ambulance comes and someone is wheeled out on a stretcher. Then they play hospital. Andrew pretends to have afflictions and Karen pretends to cure him. First, the doctor examines the cast and then asks how she broke her wrist. She exaggerates a little and says she twirled in the air but she saw a caterpillar and didn’t want to squash it. She also says there were four cans.

They sent her to Tom to take more pictures. The doctor says she’ll come to ER for couple of weeks every Wednesday and have pictures taken. After two weeks she’ll get a lighter cast. Then in 8 weeks, the cast can come off for good. Karen bursts into tears. But she’ll have to go to school. On the way out she sees a boy named Ricky Toree that broke his ankle. She again exaggerates how she feel. This time she adds a caterpillar and it’s baby. She notices his cast is full of names. He broke his on Friday and had all day Saturday to have people sign it. He only has to wear his 6 weeks. Ricky says he’ll have a famous baseball player sign his cast. Karen decides not to let Rickey have a better cast than hers, but she doesn’t know anyone famous. Looks like she’ll be busy.

Sam, Charlie, David Micheal, and Andew sign Karen’s cast. Then Kristy. Then Watson. Then Elizabeth. Neither know anyone famous. She inks Boo Boo and Shannon and they leave their paw prints on her cast. Unique but not good enough. She goes over to Hannie’s. The story grows to she jumped over seven coffee cans and her doing a triple twist. The mother caterpillar now has three babies. Hannie, Linny, and their parents sign the cast. They also get Noodle to add his paw print. Hannie’s mother says she knows the mayor but he’s not in town. Then they get Mrytle’s claw print.

Hannie isn’t happy that Karen is going to Amanda’s next and refuses to go. They have a little argument before parting. Karen’s story grows to 10 cans and the police coming. Amanda and Max sign the cast, but they won’t let her ink Priscilla. They say they don’t know anyone famous. (Shannon signs the cast too). Max says he knows a friend whose hair dresser did the hair of a famous singer. Then they hear the ice cream man. Hannie and Karen make up. Mr. Tasty asks Karen what happens. She adds helicopters and fire trucks. Andrew calls Karen out on her lie and she tells the real story. No one seems to care.

Mr. Tasty signs the cast and it turns out his name is Roger Jones. For Karen he writes Mr. Tasty underneath so they’ll know who he is. While there sitting their eating their ice cream, they see Morbidda Destiny. Karen says she bets she’s getting herbs for a spell. Then Karen has an idea. She’ll get her to sign her cast. Now if she can get someone to go with her. She asks Hannie to come over her house. She asks her to go to the witch’s house. Hannie flat out says no. Karen says this time they’ll be doing something nice. Besides, it’s day time and she’ll be in her garden in sight of everyone. Hannie agrees. Now they’ll have to figure out how to ask her. They can’t say it’s because you’re a witch. First they get some “lucky charms” (a rabbit’s foot and a stone). Morbidda Destiny asks what happened and Karen tells her. Then she asks why she wants her autograph and says because your my neighbor. Hannie says because they’re in a cast signing contest. She says her name “Tabitha Porter” and draws a black cat.

She shows it to everyone. Charlie thinks it’s no big deal. Elizabeth thinks it’s nice that they asked because “she’s so lonely”. She even drew Midnight. Karen and Andrew go back home. (Oh forgot to mention their mother and stepfather Seth went on a trip to Maine). Seth signs it and says his friend Amy Morris (a movie star) will be over and can sign her cast. Karen can’t believe it. When she stopped looking she found a famous person to autograph her cast. Still, she has the autograph of a witch.

My Thoughts:
It’s funny. I don’t remember reading a lot of the “Little Sister” books. The only one I remembered owning was “Karen’s Witch”. I didn’t recognize the title of this one but when I started reading it oddly, I started to remember bits of it. I’m not even sure where I would have read it. I remember the covers of all the ones I had vividly. But in this book, I felt sympathy for Karen. I remembered what it was like when I was young and I was given the unfavorable news by a doctor that I’d have an illness all my life and have to give myself shots every day. FOREVER! Then I also know what it’s like to have to wear a heavy object on your body and how “fun” that is. For a while, I had to wear an insulin pump and when I tell you that thing was UNCOMFORTABLE. Then I’m so small it felt like I was wearing a brick on my side or one of those very old pagers. It might not have been a big deal to someone with a little weight and bulk but on me.. So, YES I GOT IT! After some years, I just had to say this isn’t working and go back to what I knew. Luckily tho, I’ve never broken any bones. THANK GOODNESS!! I was actually kinda proud of Karen for trying to be independent. I know adults who’ve acted less independent and have just had a cold.

Rating: 5 and a half (Because I could sympathize).

This book was so cute! Karen breaks her wrist doing things she shouldn't on her roller skates. As days go by, her story keeps getting bigger and more exaggerated and in the end we find out the harm in not telling the truth. She also gets in a competition with a classmate who broke his ankle to see who can get more and better signatures so she gets Morbidda Destiny's, all her friends, pets, etc. But we also realize that it doesn't matter. I loved the mix of realism and morality that comes in this book. Overall, super fun read.

Andrew was the MVP of the book. He was quiet and a caring brother. He spent the majority of the book trying to stop Karen from telling tall tales about how she broke her wrist, but she rarely let him get a word in edgewise. Adult me would give this book 2 stars, but I am adding half of a star for the nostalgia factor - 2.5 stars.

This book was a little sad, because when Karen tried to skate over a trash can she made a perfect landing but her feet came from under her and she fell on her bottom and landed on her wrist; which was broken. So she had to go to the hospital and have a cast put on.

I listened to this one, and I really love the way Stephanie Drake narrates Karen.

Also, who knew that Morbidda Destiny’s first name was Tabitha?!

Karen is living the life of a divorced kid. Sometimes the extra stuff is nice but sometimes it’s tough. And she also likes to exaggerate. I’m impressed she can jump over coffee cans on her skates.

I've never broken any bones, so when I was growing up I had some kind of weird fascination with books about kids who did. It always seemed like such an easy thing to do, yet I fell over/off everything and not even a sprain. I guess storybook kids are just more fragile?

I have said it before but I swear I think Karen Brewer is the reason I decided to not have children. I once dreamed of a home full of children then I read about her, Jenny Prezzioso and the Pike triplets and suddenly peace quiet and solitude seemed a perfect life, which it totally is. In this book Karen once again disobeys her parents takes her new roller skates and with Andrew and Shannon in tow heads out on a walk that ends with a trick her jumping over two coffee cans. She lands okay but then slips and breaks her wrist. Finally consequences for the sociopathic demon child. She has to wear a cast on her arm and after seeing a classmate with a broken ankle gets into a cast signing competition. With each person he story grows and changes. Little Andrew knows this is wrong and tries to speak up but Karen won't shut up long enough. Finally the truth comes out and everyone laughs and shrugs it off which is a great lesson for the kids in the target audience of these books that lying is okay and there are no real consequences when you're caught or called out on it. Karen is the worst. She sets out to get a famous person's autograph and pesters poor Mrs. Porter who I feel so sorry for. Of course she gets her autograph because Karen always gets what she wants. I'm not sure if I will make it through all of this series because Karen is not the most likeable main character.

I suppose my review is about the same as my review for the graphic novel, other than the art (obviously!). I mean, the art is okay, but in one scene—where Karen is lying on the couch—her right arm looks like a baby doll's arm and disproportional. In other scenes, it's fine! Just the one looks wildly inaccurate.

Also,
My skates are so, so cool. They are red. They are the lace-up kind. The wheels are yellow.
*glares at the cover*

Also—and this bothered me about the GN, too, but I chalked it up to "too much cumulative stuff to draw"—Karen has like ten billion signatures before even going after the main event: .

WHERE ARE ALL THESE SIGNATURES FITTING? Especially with some folks writing whole paragraphs, just about!

(Admittedly, I've never broken any bones, so I haven't tested to see how many signatures can fit on a cast, but it honestly felt like there was no room left for newcomers to sign.)

Once again, a good cautionary tale, but the title feels like clickbait.

Cute.
A bit anticlimactic after the 5-star-worthy hilarious debut, but still interesting. Karen gets new roller blades and once again goes over to her father's house. She loses her balance after jumping over some empty vegetable(?) cans and breaks her wrist. What this is mostly about is her medical visits and getting people to sign her cast after she runs into Ricky from school who also broke a bone. She wants to compete with him because he's getting a celebrity to sign his cast.
Again, cute.
When I say it is interesting, I'm referring mostly to the medical aspect of breaking a bone (I never have) and the family structure (completely different from mine). As far as the storyline..., well, it might be more interesting if you were the person experiencing this. As a book, it's okay. 2 stars.

Karen is full of herself in this book. She actually said she felt special getting help at home with people bringing her stuff to the living room while she had a cast on her wrist from a roller skating accident. Every time somebody signed her cast, she lied more and more about how she broke it, just for attention and kept changing her story. Anyways the special signatures on her cast were from her pets paw prints, the “witch” next door and a celebrity her mom knew. I should feel sorry for her getting hurt, but I think she’s going to grow up to be a Karen

I loved these books as a kid, and it's easy to see why. Karen, the main character, is fun, adventurous, and flawed, making her the kind of girl you can relate to and want to be friends with. In this book, Karen breaks her wrist and struggles with her competitive drive, her desire to impress others, and her fear of the neighborhood witch.

Karen will try anything! She gets new roller skates and is a very good skater - she can even do tricks! But, Karen falls and breaks her wrist. Karen has to go to the hospital, and has never been to a hospital before. She can't even skate any more! Karen wants somebody famous to sign her cast. It won't be easy, but she won't give up until the job is done.

Gosh, I read these when I was about Karen's age. I remember this book fondly though I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to revisit it and return with the same happiness; I remember Karen as being irritating in this, but the story itself was interesting.

This was the first I ever read of the little sister books and it will always hold a special place in my heart. My grandmother took me to a library in the Preston Hollow area of Dallas and got if for me. Memories!

This is insanely nostalgic for me. I learned to read with my mother reading these books 30 years ago. And I'm rereading my collection with my son's. My oldest especially like this one because he's had a broken wrist or five 😅

Even at 41 years old, I strongly identify with Karen. Being crabby and a princess when not feeling good? Every time. (Okay, I'm a princess even when I'm feeling fine, hahaha.) But I would like to know if Karen won the autograph contest. I need closure!! (Edit 5/18/24 - Karen mentions winning the contest in Karen's School Picture . I love continuity!)

Dammit, Karen. If you'd only worn your wrist guards none of this would have happened.

Her tendency to "tell stories" annoys the hell out of me. Stop lying, Karen. It's not cute.
