What starts out as a simple assignment becomes everything Keegan every feared, and everything he ever wanted.

Keegan has served Marcus, his Alpha Anax, to the best of his abilities. After the deaths of several guards a year ago, however, Keegan is afraid he’s going to unravel at the seams. His worry over keeping everyone safe robs him of sleep and any hope of peace.

And people are noticing. Members of the guards he is captain of think he needs to get laid, or at least remember how to laugh. Keegan thinks they need to learn that there are boundaries they shouldn’t cross with him.

When he learns of a security breach by Marcus’ brother Aidan, exposing a flaw in the safety measures Keegan has set in place, Keegan is desperate to find someone to make sure the electronics at the shifter compound are break-in proof.

Marcus and Nathan are worried about Keegan. When they find someone to do the job Keegan needs done, they make sure Keegan is the one to take a short trip to Brazil to pick up the security expert, Olin.

But when Olin and Keegan meet, they snap and snarl at each other while fighting the mating bond that keeps flaring between them.

Then something happens that makes them both have to depend on each other, and if they’re lucky enough, they might even survive the ordeal.

But first they’ll have to escape their would-be captors, and make it through the rainforest, where strange things are bound to happen.

A few things about me...

I am a married mom of four who spends most of the day writing, either on stories or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick and irritate me.

And it's really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I'll just let y'all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there's something specific you'd like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio:D

Really enjoyed this one so far the most of any of them. It seemed more sophisticated in terms of its complexity. Yes you still have MMM (Me, Mine, Mate) but here the nuances were both more vocal and more subtle. The characters, particularly Olin, less likable and more difficult to understand. I liked the bit of mystery provided by the Jaguar - and I have to say the smaller top/larger bottom here which is entirely framed in a D/s relationship just absolutely works. Some of it reads a bit too much like Psychology of BDSM101. By that I mean that the stereotypical "submissive" is someone who has great control in all other areas of life and wants to not have it in the bedroom. The classic CEO type who wants to "forget it all" for sex but still wants to "own" everything if its not between the sheets or on the St. Andrews. I don't mean to imply that this is a bad thing but it has become something very prominent in terms of the psyche of why someone would do that (particularly in M/f relationships). I don't see it as something so prominent in MM books. Regardless, here it does work pretty well and I found it much more believable than Marcus and Nathan although I love them.

The Southwestern Shifters series is definitely a guilty pleasure read for me and I feel this ninth installment was one of the best and most enjoyable of the series to date. It’s been a little over two years since I first discovered this series and smashed through the first eight books in a handful of weeks, although I’m not actually sure why I stalled at the time, but I’m definitely regretting it now, that’s for sure.

This offering picks up a year after the devastating events that occurred in Revenge, which left a number of Marcus’ North American pack members dead. Marcus and his mate, Nathan, are still trying to unite all shifter-kind and keep their people safe from multiple ongoing threats, but it’s slow (dangerous) going. Luckily, Marcus now has a strong ally in South America since Ryder (an MC from Revenge) is now the new Alpha Anax in those parts, and his personal guard are stronger than ever and are being led by long-time pack member, Keegan.

When weaknesses in the pack compounds security are made known, Marcus sends Keegan to South America to retrieve a security expert tied to Ryder’s pack.

Enter Olin: security whiz, short but fierce, snarky as hell, dominant top, wears-a-chip-on-his-shoulder, human. Olin is in the know about shifters since his twin Clark recently mated one, and although Olin willingly changed his whole life to follow Clark to Brazil, he still holds resentment to shifters as a whole for stealing his brother from him in the first place.

Much like all the other couples in this series, Keegan and Olin spark immediately. Their mating bond begins developing the moment they lock hostile eyes on each other, and although both are extremely reluctant to accept such a poorly timed life-changing truth, neither can do much to deny what fate has set into motion.

As always, the push and pull of the fated pair was fun to watch, but in addition to the normal antics I’ve come to expect from this series – including initial denial, followed by scorching sexual tension that is always resolved so damn deliciously – Olin and Keegan have a bit of a power struggle on their hands, with both (until this point) strongly identifying as tops. On top of this fight for dominance, elements of BDSM also strongly come into play, and although these themes were kind of new to the series as a whole, they definitely fit the characters and their needs perfectly in this specific story.

This addition to the series was also fairly action packed, plotting a fast-paced, thrilling and sexy story that had me gobbling the whole thing up in less than a day.

Needless to say, the books within this series are strongly linked to one another, and as such, this should not be read as a standalone. Plus, this particular story ends on an open-ended note, with nearly every aspect of the storyline left open to be resolved in books to come. I wouldn’t quite call it a cliffhanger as such, but it was damn close – close enough for me to immediately need to dive into the next segment to get some answers.

I was just reading an article about the massive proportion of American boys' names than end with N now.

And in the blurb alone here we have Keegan, Aiden, Olin, and Nathan. And only Marcus who is not an N.

We have a new contender for favorite in this series!

Keegan kinda annoyed me but Olin more than made up for it. Olin is so fierce! And he owns it too.

From top to bottom
and the bottom to the top
the top is a bottom
and the bottom is a top.

Things have barely settled down after the craziness of book eight, and along comes this ninth volume and makes me bite my nails again! More than that, it introduces a very “reluctant” mated pair with both partners decidedly NOT interested in mating as such, and especially NOT with the partner who turns out to be their mate. Let the fireworks begin! Then there are also Marcus, the North American Alpha Anax, and Nathan, his mate, who play a central role as they have in most books, and I just love that fact. Not to mention a new, and totally mysterious villain. All of the above made for a truly explosive and very entertaining story.

Keegan is the captain of Marcus’s guard, and he still feels guilty of having lost seven of his soldiers in one of the big attacks on Marcus in the previous book. He has become completely obsessed with doing his job and preventing any further catastrophes, to the point there he is tense and moody. Of course, Marcus’s brother discovering a hole in Keegan’s security makes him even more frantic, and the fact he’ll have to fly (one of his least favorite activities) to Brazil pick up the electronics security expert who lives with Ryder’s pack does not make him happy. Once Keegan finds out that said security expert is obnoxious, a shorter man with a need to overcompensate, and his mate—his very dominant mate—provides a real challenge for Keegan.

Olin isn’t happy about living in South America, but when his twin brother discovered he was mated to a werewolf, and considering they are each others only family, Olin moved. He does not like the whole shifter thing, and refuses to bow to anyone, even the South American Alpha Anax, Ryder. He is physically short, but a Dom a heart, so he hasn’t had it easy. As for Keegan being his mate? He doesn’t even believe in mates, so it takes some doing for him to accept that the strange attraction he feels toward the tall, muscular stranger may just be a mating bond.

Nothing short of a major crisis could have brought these two men together. So guess what happens? Yep, their lives are in danger from an unknown enemy, and they have to work together. They are still snarling and fighting the bond for quite a while, but the sexual sparks that begin flying between them soon make inroads on their resistance. Reluctant they may start out, but in the end, they stand no chance against Fate.

If you like reading about men who are total opposite and start to fight as soon as they meet, if you want to know what's going on in Marcus and Nathan's world, and if you're looking for a read that will give you snarkiness between main characters, action, and some very hot man-on-man action in a very reluctant couple, then you will probably like this novel as much as I did.

Another untypical top/bottom relationship with these two. Appearances CAN be decieving. Here's the connundrum.. I really liked this. Action, adventure, sex (nothing too extreme), paranormal, mates.. blah blah blah.. It was entertaining for me.

I think the BIGGEST problem for me is I didn't see Keagen needing the harder stuff. I have no problem with him not in the driver seat, just what he ends up liking.
UPDATE..Jo * Smut-Dickted * Review sums this up fairly well. Perhaps with the switch of smaller dominate personality is what leaves it feeling weird for me.

Minor things.. The ending seemed similar to a wrap up in ways. Perhaps cus the ending was not satisfying. Not in the 'ohhhh cliffhanger, ya killin me' way if that makes sense. Plus, Marcus... I don't know.. I loved Aiden and Marcus' books (this made me want to go back and revisit.. hmm maybe...) but I don't like that Marcus is now being portrayed as possibly the strongest of all AA's and can therefore, even with a previous apprentice, if you will, be sooooo.... bossy in someone else's territory instead of more trying to work together since we should be on the same page type of interaction. Ok yes I didn't like the interaction between Marcus and Ryder.

Oh, and WHEN are we going to find out about this mysterious jaguar??

I really thought Gabe was the most irritating character this author could come up with. But I was wrong. Because Olin is worse. He is supposed to be, IDK sassy and fierce maybe? Sharp and witty? He just came across as an arrogant, insecure, selfish pain in the butt with an enormous chip on his shoulder. So you are short. GET OVER IT!!! He is mated to Keegan, they have a bit of a D/s thing going on, with Olin confusing being an ass with being a Dom. They had no chemistry, their love felt forced and uncomfortable and I think they are my least favourite coupling in this series so far.

At least South America is an interesting new venue for the series, and I like the addition of jaguar shifters. So it is not all bad, and I would still read the next book in the series.

Maybe more like 3.5 stars. The BDSM turn kind of took me for a loop. I guess I just haven't read that many shifter stories where there is BDSM involved, and I went into this thinking it was a "typical" shifter mate story. I did like the characters, stalwart Keegan, who is so worried about his Alpha Anax that he isn't really living for himself, and Olin, the snarky, vertically-challenged security expert. I also enjoyed the bit of action adventure since I didn't see that coming.

I really enjoyed this one, I just loved Olin and how take charge he was with everything. I also liked the continuation of the overall plot…just who is the jaguar?

Overall, I thought that Olin and Keegan were great for each other, and really had great chemistry together. I really liked this book, I thought it was well paced and well done. I hope there will be more in this series!

I really hate it when characters from previous books take up lots of page time instead of the actual couple in the book. ESPECIALLY when I have to read gratuitous sex scenes with said previous characters. Ugh. So this started off on a bad note. Then we get Olin. Lots of people are short, there are much worse things you could have to deal with it, put on your big boy undies and DEAL with it. And Olin has to top...and his "bottoming doesn't make you weak" argument to get Keegan to bottom is super hypocritical because that is EXACTLY why Olin won't bottom. Not because he doesn't enjoy it, or anything, but because he is short and people expect him to be weak and to bottom because of his height. What an ass. Being a jerk does not equal being a Dom.

With eight books already in the Southwestern Shifters series you would think it would start to get stale, but Reluctance is far from it and shows the series has more to offer. Bradford not only introduces new characters as Keegan is sent to South America to escort a security expert back to New Mexico, but she also introduces a series thread I would never imagine occurring – two actually – and I cannot wait to see where things go from here.

Since Dirk’s cowardly attack on the New Mexico compound in Revenge, Keegan has apparently been hyper-vigilant in his duties. It seems as though Marcus is not the only one harboring guilt over the shifters lost that day but as Keegan does not have a mate looking out for him like Marcus does, Keegan has become so focused on work that his personal life has suffered tremendously. But he’d do anything his Alpha Anax asks, including that which scares him most…flying. I liked the inclusion of Keegan’s fear of flying as it is such a human trait and while most shifters dislike flying, Keegan’s fear is worse, but as we learn later it pales in comparison to his mate’s fear. As for Keegan’s mate, I LOVED OLIN!!! I so cannot wait to see Olin, Nathan, and Gabe together because they are either going to wreak major havoc or kill one another and as I believe it will be the former, it is going to be a blast to watch.

Now because of the added action and suspense elements and what happens, I’m very limited on the specifics I can discuss because this is one book you need to experience the action as it plays out. What I will say is that another plot against Ryder’s position as the South American Alpha Anax is discovered and it has far reaching consequences beyond Ryder and his pack. As for the second plot twist, it’s only suggested at in Reluctance but as I’ve read the blurb for the next book in the series, Renounced, I know that what Olin has suggested is true. With the action increasing in the last couple of books, I’d suggest that Bradford is getting a bit bloodthirsty. However she remains true to the romance aspect of the series and while the conditions are not ideal, the bond that is formed between Olin and Keegan is as strong as any of the mates. And I must say that the added kink kicked the hotness factor up. I’m not sure that the introduction of a bit BDSM would have worked as well with any of the other mates. There is just something about Olin that made it feel believable. I loved Reluctance and cannot wait to read Renounced to see what happens next.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Nate & Marcus didn't become a couple until book three or four and yet they've taken center stage more and more ever since. I like them fine, but I prefer to remain focused and in the heads of the new couple. The obligatory N&M sex scenes just feel gratuitous, especially when there are more than one.

It's interesting that according to Nathan, they've been together years since each book generally takes place immediately after the previous one. This one could be a bit longer than that but not a ton.

Good that they pointed out that just because someone knows one area about computers (web design) they may not know much about another (security systems).

Actually, you're more likely to survive any type of crash if you're on anti anxiety meds because then you don't tense up.

I love that in this world, women are every bit as strong and capable as men, although none are alphas yet. But they're heads of security which is cool.

This is an interesting contrast to her book Oscar, which I just read earlier today. Similar situation with a dominant, angry, "feisty," little guy and a big alpha type fighting for dominance. The same descriptions were used such as "short man complex" and "chip on his shoulder."

But it's like night and day in the execution. In the previous one, the alpha guy likes it and they continue to fight physically when they have sex, but they want each other and respect each other. They're nice people.

Here, Olin is not a nice guy--he's an ass. Keegan is being an ass, too, but I understand why. He's a good man and is collapsing with guilt and the responsibility he's under. He actually worries and thinks about Olin's needs a little, too. I actually don't really want them together yet. I want them both to fight it more so they realize why they're missing, especially Olin.

Bdsm bedrm

Cool that he's explaining the bdsm and why Keegan needs/wants it.

Olin always needs to be in control; he could use a little subbing.

Finally they have (quick) sex while shifted. It's so dumb that books never have that of are like the one to when a shifter said that was disgusting. They're one with their wolves and more animalistic in that form. Of course they'd have sex while they're wolves.

That effing word tit again.

Lots of glorious, beautiful, action, danger, adventure...

A vacation rental that was empty wouldn't have fresh eggs in the refrigerator.

Why wouldn't he think he mattered to his guards? They tried to talk to him about his loneliness at the beginning.

Keegan is way too stressed, after the deaths of 7 shifters under his command he's become even more obsessed with ensuring the safety of Marcus and Nathan. Now he's sent to retrive Olin, a security expert, in South America. But what should've been an easy pick up turns more complicated when Olin turns out to be his mate, and there's people out to get them.

Neither wanted a mate for different reasons, but trying to deny the bond is impossible and when they have to rely on each other to keep safe they learn allot about each other real quick. Keegan has always seemed to be a strong guard and seeing him from a new perspective we see just how hard things have been for him.

Olin is a smart mouthed human with (insert snicker) height issues. He's smart and definitley the most domoniate guy from all the guys we've seen in this series so far, and that's saying allot. He might not like the shifters in the beginning but he is open to seeing things differently once he's forced to. Their not exactally opposites, but they have evough differences that they compliment each other in the perfect way.

Another great addition to this series each one bringing something different and fresh to the mix and making each story unique and very enjoyable.

Well, I’ll be damned if this wasn’t an awesome instalment to this series. To be very honest I had somehow given up that this series would make that leap and go from flat and bland to something more, but as I said this instalment certainly went beyond my expectations.

That’s not to say there weren’t stereotypes, clichés, and the “fated forced mating” that I so much despise. But – and that is one huge “but” – the story made up for all those in a most exciting way for me. Made me think Ms. Bailey Bradford is getting better and better at her writing and conveying of emotions/feeling through written text. Because there was one hell of a charge and chemistry and electrifying eroticism nearly palpable all over the lines, the kinky stuff were deliciously written, shocking in their introduction, but amazingly developed as the mated bond went deeper and deeper.

WOW... it has been over two years since I read book eight but it was still easy to slide right back into this series! Olin has become one of my favorite MCs and I do love it when one of us vertically challenged peeps are the top dog... so to speak!!! I am going to step out of my norm and say that this book may have had a tad bit too much sex... although it was all well done... but I really only need to read about the "nipple play" once or twice and then it gets redundant... just sayin'! I enjoyed visiting with all of the other MCs from past books in this series and look forward to finding out more about the mysterious "jaguar"... hopefully in the next book! As always, the books in this series are a solid 4 stars for me... they can be a bit predictable... but then again, I am a creature of habit... so that must be why these stories always work so well for me!!!

The Southwestern Shifters m/m romance series continues with number nine and it is a thrilling read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author has created a fascinating world of shifters with captivating characters that I found to enjoyable and entertaining. It kept my attention from beginning to end and all the characters drew me deeper into the story. I haven’t read the others in the series (I’ll be fixing that), and while I would have had a better understanding of the previous events that lead the characters to the present situation, the story was still enjoyable and can be read out of order and I can’t wait to see what they find out about their enemy or enemies.

Bailey never disappoints - there's the familiar theme of mates meeting and working things through between them. This it's a troubled guard captain and a chock-full-of-attitude geek who hates shifters. Their characters are likeable and well written, as you'd expect from Bailey - who supplies plenty of steamy sex-scenes between them - in the most unlikely places. Old favorites Marcus and Nathan pop up (Bailey - are you trying to worry us with Marcus feeling insecure?!) which is always good. The ending if anything came too soon and it felt like there was an over-hang for another book - but that's not bad thing. But I'm not saying any more because it'll be a spoiler.

Keegan was sent to Brazil for a business trip and came back with a mate.
I’ve always liked Keegan, Olin not so much. I found the snippy attitude annoying. Reminded me a lot of Nathan and Gabe and not in a good way.
The story itself was great, getting the story on how Ryder is settling in or not. The new species of shifters showing up. The flirt Dallas, and how he is intertwining himself with the pack/story line.
What I did enjoy was how we are breaking off from the original people and giving others there voices.

I usually put down a book as soon as I realize it is going the BDSM route, but kept reading because at least she got it right. Most erotic fiction defines BDSM as 1 person getting off on inflicting pain and 1 person getting off on receiving pain. But it's more complex than that, it is a act that requires trust and care.
