Mary Pope Osborne

She is best known as the author of the Magic Tree House series, which as of 2017 sold more than 134 million copies worldwide. Both the series and Osborne have won awards, including for Osborne's charitable efforts at promoting children's literacy. One of four children, Osborne moved around in her childhood before attending the University of North Carolina. Following college, Osborne traveled before moving to New York City. She somewhat spontaneously began to write, and her first book was published in 1982. She went on to write a variety of other children's and young adult books before starting the Magic Tree House series in 1992. Osborne's sister Natalie Pope Boyce has written several compendium books to the Magic Tree House series, sometimes with Osborne's husband Will Osborne.

This book explains to readers, in depth, the history of the characters in the fictional Magic Tree House books.
Genre: Information text because it's primary focus is to inform the reader.
Writing Traits:
1-Organizational- This book has the information presented in a very organized fashion. It has an index so students can find exactly what they are looking for. It offers websites for students to find more information. It offers tips for students when they are doing research.
2- Conventions- This book has about each person. It also has bold headings within the chapters highlighting different parts of the person's life. It also has little snippets of information along the side of the pages.
Classroom use:
Writing -Students could use this to model how to write when they are writing to inform. It shows how to break the events of someone's life up into important parts. The back of the book is full of tips on how to do research. I love this idea because Magic Tree House books are something our students are familiar which in turn makes this book easier to relate to. One of the tips is "you don't have to read the whole book." Students can see how the writer broke this book into chapters by subject so if they were researching or writing about one of these people they really would only have to read the chapter they are interested in.
Reading- I would have the students find the Magic Tree House book that went along with one of the characters in this book. I would let them choose to it was someone that interested them. You could go a step further and have the students find other books and information about the person they chose.

In 2014, Mary Pope Osborne and her sister Natalie Pope Boyce published the Magic Tree House Fact Trackers entitled Heroes for All Times. This book is a nonfiction research guide to the book entitled High Times for Heroes by Mary Pope Osborne which was published in 2014. Heroes for All Times contains short biographies of Florence Nightingale, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Muir. High Times for Heroes is about Jack and Annie meeting Nightingale. The book has wonderful black-and-white illustrations. The book has black-and-white photographs and illustrations. I know I’m not the target demographic of this book, but I wonder if the book would have been like the other Magic Tree House Fact Trackers if the book had focused on the life and times of Florence Nightingale. The illustrator for this book was Sal Murdocca. Similar to the other books in the Magic Tree House Fact Trackers series, the book has a section on how to do more research for young readers about Nightingale, Tubman, Anthony, Gandhi, King, and Muir. The book has an index and includes photo credits. Hopefully, readers of Osborne’s and Boyce’s Heroes For All Times will be inspired to do more research into the lives of Nightingale, Tubman, Anthony, Gandhi, King, and Muir.

November Book Review
Have you ever wondered what it is like to be in Egypt in the 1850s? If you do then you should read this book.
If you like History, Adventures, and Mystery Solving, then this is the perfect book for you.
Jack and Annie are Brother and Sisters and they do Quests/Missions from recent times to near dinosaur time. Jack is older than Annie and Jack has glasses while Annie doesn’t. They time travel by finding a book and looking at the place that they need to go to while being in their treehouse.
This book Jack and Annie go to Thebes, Egypt to talk to Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse but she was a famous nurse before Jack and Annie arrived so it was a bit awkward when Annie said she was a World-Famous Nurse.
I enjoyed this book overall but there are two things I would change if I were the author. 1.) I said this in the first book review but I just really want the author to add more pictures because I can understand the characters and settings a bit more. 2.) I would also add color to the book because then I can see the emotions of the characters faces better and see the setting a lot better too and I can visual that I am right next to them during the Missions.
I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

Heroes For All Times(Magic Tree House Fact Tracker #28)by Mary Pope Osborne is a great informational book! In this book there are six chapters of 6 great people in history.Those people are Florence Nightingale,Harriet Tubman,Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Muir. I think it is important to read informational books because it teaches you about history and why some things are the way they are today. What I mean by this is these people made a difference in the world.For example, Florence Nightingale is known as The Lady With The Lamp because she would comfort the soldiers at night.She is a very good person and role model to me because of her actions.This book is similar to other informational books because they talk about events that occurred or people who were once alive. If I had to recommend this book to someone it would be to history teachers or people who enjoy history overall.

120 pages. Great book with world heroes to inspire kids. There are lots of basic facts, photos, and other historical images that will assist the reader as they learn about these famous people from world history that tried to make a change in the world. Each has a unique, inspiring story. The people featured are: Florence Nightingale, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Muir. Kids will enjoy learning about these history makers and could definitely use this book for a report. It is a well-organized book with lots to keep the reader engaged. Each chapter gives just enough about each person to leave you with a good feeling of understanding the basics of their importance and contributions to the world. Highly recommended for Grades 3-5.

This goes with High Time for Heroes, and showcases Florence Nightingale, Harriet Tubman, Susan B Anthony, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr and John Muir. Photos and illustrations bring them to life, as do the brief but detailed overviews of their lifes and what they contributed to the world. As usual, a good list of further resources is in the baqck.

These are short vignettes about different historical heroes. I really liked it. I learned new things and it made me think about what being a real hero truly means. I love these fact trackers.

This book was uneven in its coverage of those in it. Some people had much more details about their lives than others. I had expected a better quality book than this one was due to reading others in the series.

This is a well-written nonfiction book for middle grade readers. It features six historical figures: Florence Nightingale, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Muir. There are photos as well as black & white illustrations and tips from Jack and Annie. In addition to facts, this book seeks to inspire readers to strive to become heroes themselves by following their own inner light, being brave, and never giving up.
The final part of the book makes suggestions for doing further research. Sources are suggested and lists are included. There is a complete and easy to use index that allows readers to focus on just one person or topic.
This is the fact tracker companion to "Heroes for All Times" and I would highly recommend it.

Another fascinating fact filled edition in the Magic Tree House companion books. Mary Pope Osborne picked several of my own personal heroes plus added a new interest to my radar. Sadly, before reading this I didn't know much about Gandhi, I have already checked out additional reading material on this peaceful, simple man for further research for myself and my daughter. I wish we had been reading these wonderful companion books through our entire Magic Tree House ride, but we will slowly go back and read them all eventually.

Read it with the children and we liked it. Good intro to some great heroes. Just enough info to keep it short and sweet but get good information and pique their interest for further research. We will check out more of the fact checker books.

The environmentalist at the end gets majorly shorted - how could he possibly be considered a hero coming after MLK, Susan B Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and Ghandi? Yeah, yeah, preserving our natural resources is important...but is it as important as freeing an entire people?!

Oliver loves these books. This one was about Florence Nightingale and the history of modern nursing, set in Egypt in the mid-1800s. Adventure and bravery, time travel and monkeys. What’s not to love?
