Rate this book
The hottest takes and biggest beefs about hockey from the wildly popular podcaster and YouTuber

Who would be on the Mount Rushmore of goalies?

Is Gretzky the Greatest Player of All Time (a.k.a. GOATzky)?

What are the most embarrassing Leaf losses of all time?

Why would you choose to play in a small market?

Steve “Dangle” Glynn was already a popular talking head on Sportsnet the night the Leafs lost to their own back-up goalie (and Zamboni driver), but his fandom skyrocketed after his rant following the hilarious mishap gained one million views on YouTube. Dangle is well known as a long-suffering Leafs fan, but he is more than just that. He shares his rants and opinions about all teams across the NHL, directing his laser focus onto hockey’s greatest arguments, from the best players of all time, to the worst trades, to the most embarrassing Leafs losses.

From one of the most unique voices in hockey, Hockey Rants and Raves is packed with passionate, honest and often humorous takes on all things hockey—required reading for all fans of the game.

This was a fun, enjoyable read for any hockey fan. It doesn't matter who your team is, because the author rants, and raves about all of them, as well as most of the players who have risen to any level of prominence in the game.

The author has a terrific sense of humour - I mean, he's a Toronto Maple Leafs fan so, you know, he pretty much HAS to. Fortunately, there are so many other teams to talk, and rant, about he can forget about the sad life of a Leafs fan for a bit and exercise that sense of humour more widely.

I didn't read every single chapter of this, because some of them were largely about statistics and I am just not interested in that aspect of the sport, but the rest of the book really is a love-letter to hockey which also looks at the best and worst of the sport, the players and the management of the sport with a realistic and funny lens. I enjoyed this, and if you're a hockey fan, you probably will too.

Steve did a great job with this book. In a book where every chapter is a new topic, it’s natural that some chapters would be more interesting than others, but they were entertaining for the most part. And that’s the BetMGM big story

Steve Dangle, when listening to his podcasts, has such a powerful voice. And this voice holds up on the page. The topics of this book are fun and interesting. I loved his Tampa Bay Lightning blurb (I have been saying it for years) and his constant respect for Andrei Vasilevskiy. This book was a genuine treat, and fans of his podcast and hockey will certainly love it too.

I’ve been a fan of Steve for years now, so I’ll admit that maybe I’m biased when I say that this book was fantastic. Listening to someone talk about what they love is always a treat, and Steve’s passion and wit really comes through in the same way as they do in his YouTube-videos and podcast.

Having this opportunity to sit down and take some more time to formulate his thought also allows him to express a different side of his feelings for the game of hockey, namely his unquestionable love for it. On YouTube he’s most famous for his fiery rants since those videos tend to go more viral and even when his team is doing well, the vibe of his videos are still more lighthearted by nature. In this environment he has time to truly go in depth about why he loves hockey so much, down to the tiniest details. Some moments even had me a bit teary eyed, which really impressed me.

There are some points in the book where the terminology might be a bit confusing if you’re completely new to the sport. But for the most part, whether you’ve been a fan of hockey since the day you were born or you just recently got into the sport, this book will most likely entertain you and teach you something new.

I recommend going with the audiobook since Steve himself narrates it and can give some moments and punchlines an extra dimension with his comedic timing and signature fiery delivery. Go listen to it now, and may your favorite team never lose to their own Zamboni-driver.

A nice and breezy read. Feels like sitting at the bar with your best friend and just talking about the sport you both love.

The book does deliver on the title. It's Steve Dangle ranting and raving about hockey. If that's appealing to you, then you will enjoy this book.

It does feel like the original idea for this book was a kind of "beginners guide to hockey" that a long the way became a collection of rants and raves. This has the downside of not necessarily appealing to more experienced fans who may feel that the book is not really adding anything new. If the original idea was a beginners guide, then the lack of anything new makes a lot of sense. But, as is, the book does not quite reach that extra level of nerding out novelty that I would have liked.

Nevertheless, a nice, quick, and fun read about the best sport on earth!

I really like Steve’s style. Felt like a conversation in my head with another person.

The ranting and raving were more toned down than his LFRs, which I appreciated

If you’ve never watched a Steve Dangle video on YouTube, I would strongly recommend doing so prior to reading this book. Either that, or listen to the audiobook as I believe Steve narrates it himself. That way you can read the book in his voice! Which made this read a lot more fun and exciting.

A very well done collection of rants and raves about hockey, and the NHL, with a good lean into the Toronto Maple Leafs (my team as well as Steves).

A definite read for any hockey fan!

This is exactly what I wanted and was expecting from a Steve Dangle book. It’s always fun reading his rants but I wanted a little more of his opinion in it. There were so many stats that the “GOAT” chapters felt really slow and I skimmed most of them. He really shines talking about the leafs and his hockey knowledge is incredible. On the other hand, a lot of the short, one-paragraph synopses of the teams felt rushed. One thing I didn’t love was how every chapter ended with a play on words or a wisecrack or a cliché transition. I feel like I got over that in my writing when I was in grade 9. In the end though, you don’t read a Dangle book for the writing, you read it for the fun and laughs and that’s exactly what I got.

If you’re a fan of the sport of hockey, chances are that you’ve heard of Steve ‘Dangle’ Glynn. He’s the most vocal Toronto Maple Leafs fan out there, and perhaps the most vocal fan of any team in the League. He’s also the most recognizable and talked about Leafs supporter, outside of maybe celebrities like Mike Myers and Will Arnett. I also think of him as my spirit animal, for lack of a better term, because he’s an extrovert who happens to usually vocalize what this introvert is often thinking about our frustrating favourite team.

Steve Glynn is most well known for his YouTube channel, which I believe started during the infamous 2012-2013 season. He’s praised and watched by fans of the Maple Leafs who agree with him, and unfortunately mocked by many others for his extravagant passion and tendency to yell. He’s just a really hardcore fan of an incredibly snake bitten, cursed and frustrating as all hell hockey team. One who knows his stuff, and cares more than is healthy. I know the latter one well.

After years of much watched Leaf Fan Reaction videos, Steve worked for SportsNet and handled things like watch parties and trade tree videos. Now, he has his own podcast network, which he does with friends and former pros. He’s also written two books, the first of which was appropriately titled, “This Team is Ruining My Life” despite mostly being about his life. The second one — Hockey Rants and Raves — is the reason for this post and the subject of this review.

With Hockey Rants and Raves, Steve Dangle was given the opportunity to talk about many facets of the sport he and I both love. This includes insights, personal experiences and lots of opinion, in the format of some rants and some raves. The chapters vary, and don’t follow any structured list, and the subject matter is the same. At the end of the day, it all boils down to some form of hockey, though.

Within the nearly 300 pages of this non-fiction book, you’ll read about the different types of annoying CHEL (EA Sports’ NHL series) players, why the PWHL is so important for women’s hockey, who the best skaters and goalies to ever play the game were, and tips on what to do if you’re just starting out as an adult hockey player. There’s a lot more to this book, though, including a focus on the state of the National Hockey League, in-depth analysis of some of the worst trades in League history (boy, was that tough to read as a Leafs fan) and talk about why attending games is so enjoyable and immersive. Needless to say, Steve covers a lot of ground here, and does so well.

Of course, the format of this book and its title give you the best idea of what to expect. That is, lots of opinion. There’s a substantial amount of content here, and some of it is subjective. It’s the opinions of one person, and their frustrations with things like refs not doing their jobs. If you aren’t interested in that, don’t pick this book up.

The above is both a good thing and a bad thing. It both increases and limits its audience at the same time. If you aren’t a fan of Dangle, it may make you more of one, but it might also do the opposite if you’re one of his online detractors.

As a longtime fan of the game, and a casual fan of the LFR videos Steve posts, I found Hockey Rants and Raves to be an interesting and informative read. Once again, I found that our opinions are quite similar, as is our passion for the most frustrating team in sports, which is great at embarrassing itself. However, I did find that I lost some steam in reading it as I barrelled through to its second half.

If you’re a stats fan, this won’t bother you. However, I must admit that I struggled through certain chapters, including one about the best goalies in NHL history and a similar one about Wayne Gretzky. We all know he’s the Great One, but — for better or worse, depending on who you are — Steve goes into great detail and compares other greats (Orr, Lemieux, Howe) to him. He does the same with several great goalies, comparing them (Brodeur, Roy, Dryden, Hasek) to each other. These chapters are very number heavy, and there’s an information overload. It made them kind of boring to me, even though the subject matter interests me. Then again, I’ve never liked math, or numbers, or been good with them.

I do, however, really respect and admire the amount of research Steve did for this book. It really shows.

Simply put, some parts of Hockey Rants and Raves by Steve ‘Dangle’ Glynn were easier and more interesting to read than others. I think that will be true for all readers, as we all have our interests within the sport. Some of us are big stats people, whereas others aren’t. Some like to debate who was the best of the best, and some don’t. Others who read this won’t be gamers or know a lot about the World of CHEL. I do, and have been playing these games since NHLPA ‘93. Of course, online gaming and EA Sports Hockey League didn’t exist back then, and I mostly play online versus or Be a Pro.

Overall, this is a well-written book. There’s the odd minor error, which you see in every first edition, but the editor did a good job. It’s mostly easy to follow and understand, and I laughed a couple of times. However, you’ll definitely be inundated with an information overload.

I’m a fan of Steve Dangle’s, and always have been. If you are the same, or you simply love hockey, you’d likely enjoy reading his new book, Hockey Rants and Raves. It’s a very dense and informative one, but it’s also mostly an entertaining and thought provoking one.

This review is based on a copy of the book that we were provided with.

The very important disclaimer, my range of ratings for hockey books is likely 6.5 to 10. So for this I will give it 3.5 stars.
I am sports crazy but hockey is at a different level.
So, as far as hockey books are concerned this one isn’t at the highest level.
Having said that, I enjoyed many parts of the book.

Many parts of it could really by Hockey For Dummies. It was written at such a basic level, I believe so that it could speak to anyone, but that’s not enjoyable for me. An example was the chapter about equipment for the beginner player. It was too bad that late in the book there was a chapter dedicated to something I could do at 3, and new adult players could learn in 2 minutes.

On the flip side, his debate about the goalie Mount Rushmore and player Mount Rushmore…..yes, debates that we have in our own setting all of the time. And he correctly has Gretzky as untouchable at the top, although his lead up to that affirmation had been wondering about his sanity.

Stats, stats, stats. This would play out better in written format where you could just glaze over them. I enjoy stats, but I could see this dragging on in the audiobook for many readers.

Let’s start with the fact that I am not a leafs fan and really don’t care about the stats part of the game. That being said I am a hockey fan and have fond memories of watching it growing up in the 80s ( oh how I loved watching Guy Lafleur fly down the ice with his hair just flowing behind him). I loved passing on the love of the game to my oldest (he was 6 weeks old when attended his 1st NHL game). So when my oldest gave me a copy of this book as a present I put aside my feelings for stats and the leafs and read the gift my son gave me.

I cannot say it enough how pleasantly surprised I was with it. It was entertaining, well written, and informative. The author shared his love for his team while also sharing silly stories about his team and thus being a leafs fan.
The stats were relevant to the stories he shared and not overwhelming.
All in all it was a great read - signed an Ottawa Senators fan ( and a Montreal fan from my childhood)

I don't really understand the point of this book. What is ranting and raving about? He spent a chapter arguing that Wayne Gretzky is the best of all time. He spent a chapter about going out and playing hockey at an older age. He spent a chapter explaining how to choose a team to cheer for (and told you to either Google or not Google something for every second team). Also a chapter about going to a game. None of those are rants or raves, or are particularly interesting.

The worse trades of all times are five trades everyone know and no one argues is a bad trade.

I still don't understand his chapter about how a player choosing to play in a city without a lot of media pressure means the fans if that team don't care as much. That is some bad logic and reasoning.

I just didn't understand the point behind this book.

A great casual read that feels like talking to a friend.

Hockey Rants & Raves by Steve "Dangle" Glynn is a great easy reader that combines humour, heart, and analysis all centered mostly around NHL Hockey.

It's a book for hockey fans by hockey fans and it reads exactly like having a spirited debate with a friend over what you love and hate about the sport. Dangle never makes it a purely statistics snooze fest, nor a boorish brouhaha, simply a smattering of different perspectives on different aspects of Canada's game - from fighting, to trades, to women's hockey, video games, and the all time greats of the sport.

It's not the most eloquent or thought provoking read, but it absolutely will put a smile (or sometimes an intentional grimace) on your face and never over stays its welcome.

You do get what the books says you’ll get, a lot of ranting and raving about hockey.

I did enjoy a lot of the discussions in the book, including why you should cheer for each current NHL team if you’re just starting to be a fan, the discussion of who would be on a goalie Mount Rushmore and some of the worst trades in NHL history. They were very fun and informative parts of the book.

As someone who’s lived in the Toronto area my entire life, but is very much not a Leafs fan I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter on the 4 biggest Leafs losses. Special mention to the Game 7 loss to the Bruins after being up 4-1!

I did find it was a bit Leafs heavy but that’s on me as the author is a huge Leafs fan and I should have expected this.

There was also a lot of random yelling in the audiobook as well, which I didn’t enjoy. But this is again a bit on me as this is very much the author’s brand and fits with the Rants part of the title. As someone who is a bit sensitive with sounds though, it wasn’t my favourite.

This perfect for hockey fans who enjoy the author’s brand of content or are maybe more Leafs fans then I am.

This book is a must-read for hockey fans and Toronto Maple Leaf fans. Steve does a great job of compiling hockey facts and presenting them in his own rant-style way. If you're a fan of his YouTube channel and podcast, you will read this in his voice as if you're watching one of his videos.

Obviously, if you're not a fan of hockey, you will not get much out of it unless you want to learn about the sport otherwise this book is a stellar read that is hard to put down. Excellent job Steve hopefully down the road, you put out another book!!

Also a big props to whoever created the cover. Not only does it look cool, but the tough texture adds to much life to the scratched up rink.

A lot of fun! Love the podcast, and it’s always funny being a fan of them and the Habs. As they’re such a Leafs dominated network (probably why I haven’t read his first book if I’m honest). But this definitely takes a more broad approach which I’m more fond of in this case. Really appreciated the chapter that gives people new to hockey reasons to start cheering for each team in the NHL. And of course the one that praises women’s hockey and takes a shot at the trolls who need to go outside. Steve’s openness and sincerity is something I really appreciate as a listener, and now a reader too.

Wanted to ding you a star for not even mentioning Marc Andre Fleury in your mount Rushmore conversation. I mean you added Vasi as the what about aboutism instead of the flower power? shame shame. But that aside, this book was a great read (I would recommend getting the audiobook, bc Steve's inflections and storytelling make it a super enjoyable journey). If you're a hockey fan or just getting into hockey, this is a great book to help on the journey. All said, we are owed a whole book on your women's hockey thoughts so I'll hang tight to read that one whenever you're ready.

I'm a fan of Steve Dangle and his podcast. While I didn't get the audiobook I could sure hear Steve's voice while reading this book. Unlike his previous book Steve writes a bunch of chapters about various discussions/arguments you might have with various hockey buddies. I'm not saying this book will help you win every argument with your buddy who thinks Martin Brodeur is the best goalie of all time but at least you'll go into that discussion well armed.

This was a quick, enjoyable read. I liked it slightly less than Steve Dangle's first book, which was more of a memoir (and largely about breaking into a weird media industry, which is very much up my alley). But he's a strong, engaging writer, and even though I didn't care about the minutia of hockey stats he still managed to hold my interest in the driest chapters. If you care about hockey and enjoy Steve even casually, I do recommend this!

This is the kind of hockey novel every p wee son related to the game of hockey should try to write. Steve Glynn puts his opinions out there and backs them up with his specific supporting details. Goalie Mount Rushmore, Goatzky, and The Worst Trades Ever are awesome chapters. While I am a hockey fan, most hockey books disappointment me. While my expectations were low, this book blew past all my expectations. A fun read, even for a Habs fan!!

This was a super fun book to read in 20-minute chunks on Saturday mornings while the kids crawled all over me. Who is on the "Mount Rushmore" of NHL goaltenders? What were the worst losses the Leafs ever experienced? Does anybody have a claim at being better than the Great One? What are the best and worst parts of going to an NHL game live?

Steve is the muse for the modern NHL fan, and captures, on behalf of fans, the best - most excruciating - parts of cheering for your favourite team.

Another great Steve Dangle read. I love the podcast and have since the beginning, but what makes it so consistent is the story telling ability from all of the hosts, honestly. But make no mistake, Steve knows his hockey and you can hear the excitement in his voice to share with the reader. Now, if we could just get an audiobook of Adam's History Corner...

I really enjoyed this book. I like listening to Steve rant and rave on a normal basis. But this book was different than his podcast or videos. If you aren't even a hockey fan and you pick this book up you can walk away with a better idea of what hockey is and you might even give being a fan or playing a chance.

As a hockey fan I really enjoy Steve's podcast so I looked forward to this book. I was not disappointed. Each chapter covers different aspects of being a fan. If you love hockey you will enjoy this book. I must admit my favourite parts were where he talks about how his team lost a game to a Zamboni driver on their payroll.

A great read for both the casual or intense hockey fan! If you follow or have seen at least one of Steve’s videos you know his passion and many of us can relate. He does a great job of capturing this passion on the pages and enables his readers to recount similar experiences, debates & discussions about our beloved sport.

Steve is great at saying the quiet parts out loud. For most leaf fans, he's our inner dialogue that on he surface can seem overly emotional but actually has well thought out reason behind it. This is a quick, easy to read, and enjoyable book for any hockey fan and especially Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

Even if you don't know much about hockey, you should read this book especially listen to it because Steve does the audiobook. I'd recommend watching a video of his before buying it, but trust me, if you like Steve, you will LOVE this book. I'm still somewhat new to hockey, and this gave me new insights to hockey.

Look, This rating is generous. I was leaning towards 2 stars, but thought I should judge it for who it's meant for.

this book seems to be written for people who are new to the sport. if you've grown up with hockey, played the game, followed the NHL your whole life, then it's probably too basic for you.
