Personal Disciplemaking: A Step-by-step Guide for Leading a Christian From New Birth to Maturity

Rate this book
Most disciplemaking strategies employ a "materials-oriented" approach - "If you take the disciple through this set of materials, they will be discipled." Personal Disciplemaking takes a "needs-oriented" approach. That is, let'd first assess where the needs are in this growing Christian, discern what God is doing in his or her life, and partner with HIM in the process. The first eight chapters give practical, general help in what is involved in the discipling process. The next twelve chapters focus on initial follow-up of a new Christian - the first twelve things you should do with a new believer in Christ. The final section helps the reader lay out a plan for a lifetime of discipling, using the Personal Disciplemaking Tool Kit. The approach can be used in a one-to-one mentoring relationship, or as a curriculum for small group discipling.

This was far and away the most practical 'how to' in mentoring/disciple making that I've read to date. Truth is, I learned at least as much about being a disciple as training up others. The book is so packed with biblical context that my plan is to go back through the book as a devotional, studying the references in greater detail. My recommendation is to not be in a hurry, and work your way through this book. It's not meant to be merely read...

A bit dated, but some really helpful thoughts on how to intentionally disciple a person from new birth to Christian maturity. Some really helpful illustrations/analogies, and topics to consider overall.

For anyone looking to disciple or mentor/coach someone in the basics of the Christian faith, this is the fundamental book. In all my years of searching, I have never come across another book that does such a good job of blending step-by-step instructions, sound doctrine, and guidance on the relational aspect of discipleship. While some of the instruction uses sample dialogue that sounds dated to our ears, all the material is easily adaptable. While many books will give you the 'why' of discipleship, this is one of the very few that also give you the 'what' and 'how'. Highly recommended. I use it all the time.

If you're looking for a manual on how to disciple someone, this book is an excellent resource. It outlines how to teach a new believer the basic aspects of Christianity, but is also very detailed in how it goes about it. I recommend it to those who want a good resource for mentoring someone!

I need to be able to apply the concepts found in this book in order to be able to give it a higher rating. Until then, 3 stars.
