Das ist eines der unkinderhaftesten Kinderbücher ab 10, die ich bisher gelesen habe😅 Ich liebe Mia. Sie ist so toll und kümmert sich so wundervoll um ihren kleinen Bruder❤️ Allerdings sollte er hin und wieder besser zu Hause bleiben, er ist 4😅
Auch fühle ich die Kinderversion eines Liebesdreiecks aufkommen🫢 Es bleibt also spannend.
Neuer Lieblingscharakter: Layla. Sie ist wunderbar ungezwungen und hat was neurodivergentes an sich, ich liebe es🥰 Auch wenn vermutlich nur ihre Herkunft der Grund für ihr Verhalten ist.
Was mir auch wirklich gut gefallen hat, war, dass kleine Details aus dem Alltag eingewebt wurden, zum Beispiel, dass Mia mit einem Seidentuch schläft und ihr Vater ihr die Haare macht💖
Es war insgesamt eine sehr spannende Fortsetzung und Chantal Busse hat das Zeug zur Lieblingssprecherin😍

Der erste Band in der Reihe hatte mich damals wirklich total überrascht, ich war total von der Welt und den Charakteren begeistert, und der Schreibstil hat mich auch gleich in den Bann gezogen.

Der zweite Band konnte super gut mithalten. Gerade was die Spannung anging, die letzten Kapitel haben mich wirklich einige Nerven gekostet, es ist wirklich so viel passiert, so viel was Mia und Lucas für ihr Leben lang beeinflussen wird.

Mit Layla haben wir einen neuen Charakter beommen und ganz ehrlich, ich weiß noch nicht genau was ich mit ihr anfangen soll, und was sie im Großen und Ganzen für eine Rolle spielen wird. Aber ich bin auf Band 3 gespannt.

The first book truly was the biggest surprise to me back when I first read it, I was super excited about the world and the characters, and I was really into the writing.

The second book really kept up with that. Especially the intensity of the storyline, especially in the last few chaptersI was beyond stressed, so much happened, so much that Mia and Lucas will be affected by for the rest of their lives.

With Layla we got a new character that I seriously don't know what to think of just yet, and what kind of role she is going to play in the story overall. But I'm super excited for the 3rd book.

I loved the first book in the series a lot, so when I saw the sequel on Netgalley Germany, I was super excited! The world the author has created is just so unique and creative, as are the umbra, these shadow beings that help the characters fight the forces of evil. And main character Mia had to fight a lot in this second book: to gain control over her powers, for her family, her friends and finally for the freedom of her hometown.

Mia is a great main character, she's smart and brave, but also afraid and insecure which makes her likeable and human. Her relationship to her little brother Lucas and also her friends and parents is so sweet. The characters all feel well rounded.

The story is exciting and suspensful, and I think the author's love for gaming and therefore vivid fictional worlds shines through a lot! The story here is full of adventure, sometimes it also gets a little spooky! My only complaint is that sometimes, the book seems to suffer from "second book/middle book syndrome", meaning it dragged a bit here and there. Overall it probably could have been a bit shorter. I also didn't really underestand the storyline with little girl Layla and how this character ties into things, but I guess this will become clearer in the next book. Seriously, this girl gives me the creeps, though.

I'd definitely recommend this series to children 11 and up. Some scenes may be frightening for younger readers, but overall it's a really great fantasy story!

What worked:
Mia has horrible dreams involving her family members where shadows pour from their bodies. A strange woman’s voice speaks to Mia in her dreams and she starts having visions even while she’s awake. The troubling thoughts seem to be a sign that the Reaper King isn’t gone forever and at least one of his Elite is still roaming free to cause trouble. Mia can’t believe it might be her former best friend, Miles. For readers, it’s unclear if Mia’s imaginings are twisted variations of her experiences, premonitions of what’s to come, or messages from the Reaper King. The woman’s voice speaks to Mia in a time of need so maybe the voice is trying to help her. Or, maybe it’s trying to manipulate her.
Mia’s parents continually stress the importance of Mia learning to control her Lightcaster powers. Standing up to the Reaper King and his minions last summer doesn’t mean she knows how she did it. Her power often builds up when she feels strong emotions, like stress and anger, until it erupts from her hands. That’s not a useful way to use such a strong ability. Mia’s parents provide lessons but they’re not Lightcasters and they get their knowledge from incomplete text from a Lightcaster book. She’s frustrated with her lack of progress especially when her little brother, also a Lightcaster, has some success. However, she eventually feels a new sense of purpose and determination with the hopes of helping her grandparents and preparing for the secret plans of the Elite.
As the title indicates, a traitor is lurking in the story. Readers will be suspicious of every character and question their actions. New characters who were once aligned with the Elite enter Nubis so readers will immediately be leery of their motives. The Reaper King is still able to influence his Elite followers even though he’s not physically present. Consequently, readers will anticipate his return even though they won’t know when or how he’ll do it. He hopes to capture a Lightcaster which puts Mia and Lucas in imminent danger. Mia finds cryptic messages from an unknown person that influence her decisions but is the person trying to help Mia or are the messages leading her into a trap?
What didn’t work as well:
I know it’s a way to develop drama but Mia repeatedly disobeys her parents to go on her secret missions. It gets a little redundant when Mia repeatedly goes off on her own, fearful of what her parents may think, but receives little consequence for putting herself in danger. It seems like her parents should be more protective of her safety but Mia repeatedly puts herself in danger. This adds tension to the plot but readers may expect the parents to try harder to keep their daughter safe. I was.
The final verdict:
This book continues Mia’s quest to stop the Reaper King even though this time the antagonists aren’t clearly defined. The suspects aren’t easily identified which helps to build suspense. Overall, this is an exciting continuation of the series and I recommend you give it a shot.

3.5 but rated up because I feel like the author has really upped her game from book 1 (which doesn't often happen in the second book in a series).
Mia may have temporarily stopped the Reaper King but he is now haunting her nightmares as well as a woman's voice that is also calling out to her from them. The Elite that they captured are not talking and an attack on her umbra makes it clear that there is still a threat to Nubis. Mia decides to take matters into her own hands (she does this a lot), figure out her powers, find the missing pieces, and protect those she loves.
Stay tuned for book 3 which will hopefully wrap up all the loose ends and new discoveries.

Being back in this world was great. I forgot how much light (ha) Lucas brings to this story, a much much needed light at times. These books are definitely for kids who like a magical, mysterious and marvellous book to get their teeth into. I look forward to the finale.

I’ll be honest: it was like 50 pages too long. It just kept going. It was a great story with brilliant writing… but 430 pages is LONG for a kids book!

I read the first one, and immediately fell in love with it. I couldn't wait for the second one to come out, and when it did, I wasn't disappointed. Once again, the plot is amazing. I can't wait to get the 3rd one! I highly recommend this for fantasy lovers.

Der erste Band dieser hat mir letztes Jahr gefallen, weshalb ich mich gefreut habe, die Fortsetzung ebenfalls als Rezensionsexemplar lesen zu können. Vielen Dank an den Verlag und an Netgalley!

Nach den Ereignissen aus Band eins weiß Mia jetzt um ihre Bestimmung und trainiert fleißig mit ihren Umbra, um eine Zähmerin zu werden und ihre Kräfte besser zu kontrollieren. Doch seltsame Vorfälle häufen sich und sie wird durchgehend von Albträumen geplagt. Ist der König der Finsternis vielleicht doch nicht vollständig besiegt?

In diesem Band bleiben wir in der Stadt Nubis, in der es durchgehend Nacht ist. Dadurch lernen wir mehr von der Kultur kennen, was ich sehr genossen habe. Es war nicht ganz so viel, wie ich von einem Erwachsenenbuch erwartet hätte, aber das ist dieses Buch ja auch nicht. Der Weltenaufbau ist nach wie vor sehr spannend mit den Umbra, den Schattenkreaturen, die ihren Zähmern zur Seite stehen und die Gesellschaft, die sich darum herum gebildet hat.

Der Fokus des Buches liegt auch sehr stark auf Freundschaft und Loyalität und darauf, dass man für das Richtige auch riskieren muss, Regeln zu brechen. Der Zusammenhalt zwischen Mia und ihren Umbra und ihr und ihrer Familie, auch wenn sie sich ihnen ständig widersetzt und alles besser weiß, ist wirklich stark, was ich als schöne Nachricht empfinde.

Der Konflikt bleibt dabei trotzdem bestehen. Ich muss zugeben, oft war mir Mia zu unbesonnen und rechthaberisch, wovon sie von der Erzählung nur bekräftigt wurde. Sie verhält sich zwar noch sehr wie ein Kind, aber ihre Kräfte werden immer größer, was sie langsam zu einer unrealistisch unfehlbaren Heldin werden lässt, der nichts passieren kann. Ihre Entwicklung ist allerdings auch noch nicht vorbei, also ist es noch zu früh um mehr darüber sagen zu können.

Dabei war für mich das größte Problem des Buches die Handlungsgeschwindigkeit. Denn die hat sich sehr gezogen. Eigentlich wartet man das ganze Buch lang, dass etwas Größeres passiert, denn die Ereignisse spitzen sich nur sehr langsam zu. Daher war ich auch nicht undankbar, dass sich Mia ständig neue riskante Aktionen ausgedacht hat, um mehr herauszufinden, denn sonst wäre es langweilig geworden. Es handelt sich wahrscheinlich nur um das typische mittleres-Buch-Syndrom einer Trilogie - und ich vermute, dass der letzte Band dafür umso spannender werden wird.

Im Endeffekt war ich also ein wenig enttäuscht, dass die Spannung sich in diesem Band entspannt zurückgelehnt hat. Dennoch werde ich die Reihe weiter verfolgen und empfehle den ersten Band an Liebhaber von Fantasy für Jüngere!

Spannend, emotional und kreativ

Mias Leben ist seit der Vertreibung des Königs der Finsternis nicht gerade einfacher geworden. Neben ihrem Lichtwächtertraining versucht sie weiterhin herauszufinden, wer ihre Großeltern angegriffen und in eine Art Koma versetzt hat, sie wartet besorgt auf die Rückkehr ihres Freundes Miles und ihre Zähmerprüfung steht auch kurz bevor. Außerdem weigern sich die gefangen genommenen Mitglieder der Elite weiterhin, irgendetwas über ihre Absichten oder die Pläne des Königs der Finsternis preis zu geben. Und als wäre all das nicht schon genug, wird sie von Albträumen und zwei Stimmen in ihren Gedanken geplagt. Als sie es nicht länger ertragen kann, nur von Fragen umgeben zu sein, entschließt sie sich, sich gemeinsam mit ihren Umbra Lux und Nox auf den Weg nach Astaroth zu begeben, um in der Hauptstadt der Finsternis endlich Antworten zu finden.

Mir gefiel auch dieser Band wieder sehr gut. Er war deutlich leidenschaftlicher angelegt als der Vorgängerband. Die Themen Freundschaft, Familie und Verrat sind hier stark präsent und erzielen daher ein hohes Maß an Emotionalität bei der Protagonistin – und auch bei mir als Leserin. Mias Beziehungen zu Miles, TJ, Lukas, aber auch Lux und Nox treten stärker hervor und bilden den Kern dieses Bandes. Wir erhalten mehr Einsicht in die Innenwelt der Protagonistin und so konnte ich persönlich stärker mitfühlen.

Im ersten Band hat mich der Mangel an Informationen zum König der Finsternis gestört. Er war dort nur eine Figur, die mehr dem Namen nach, aber nicht physisch präsent war. Das ändert sich hier beides. Der Leser erhält endlich mehr Hintergrundwissen zu dem König, den Lichtwächtern und den Intentionen aller Parteien. Dennoch muss ich einen halben Stern abziehen, denn mir fehlte der diplomatische Versuch einer Klärung der Situation. Mia hatte so oft Kontakt zum König, aber es kam ihr nie in den Sinn, ihn zu befragen und ihm Alternativen anzubieten. Das hat mich an mehreren Stellen in der Geschichte gestört. So blieb er als Figur wieder nur der durch und durch böse Antagonist, der von Rache und fehlender Rationalität getrieben ist. Schade irgendwie…

Dennoch konnte mich die Story im Gesamten wieder überzeugen und die Autorin hat bei mir eine emotionale Achterbahnfahrt verursacht. Ich bin nun wirklich auf den Abschlussband gespannt und hoffe auf ein kleines Happy End für Mia und ihre Umbra.
