BAM! 💥 This book was lit AF and I absolutely loved every second of it.
Reading this book felt like being in the back of a car on a backroad while hitting every pothole and crevice, being thrown up and slamming back down and then being pulled side to side. Someone described this book as a rollercoaster but I’d say more like a car crash at 250 mph. Ha.
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘚𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘏𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 by Art Bell pulls you in from the start and fully entertains throughout. With characters you won’t forget and a super fast pace, this is one thriller you need to read this year. I like how the book is a mashup of subgenres, there’s something for every reader in this one.
A debut book that after you’ve read it you won’t have to ask, “Who is Art Bell?!” So run for your life, but go buy this book first.
📖: “For readers of Harlan Coben and Laura Dave, a gripping modern-day noir thriller featuring a hotshot lawyer unexpectedly drawn into a web of violence and intrigue by the ex-wife he hasn't spoken to since their bitter divorce, written by the former president of Court TV.”
“The day Henry Gladstone, a lawyer at a white-shoe Manhattan law firm, met Leslie Dunlop, he knew she was trouble—but he couldn't say no. Their steamy affair became a marriage filled with secrets and lies that collapsed as spectacularly as it began.
Cut to today: Leslie, who Henry hasn’t heard from since their divorce, bursts into his office and announces that if he doesn’t hand over a quarter-million dollars, they’ll both be killed. Henry dismisses her story as a stupid attempt to steal his money and—despite his still-smoldering desire for her—tells her to get lost. But when he comes home to find his apartment ransacked, he begins to think this time Leslie may be telling the truth. And now that he desperately needs to find her, she’s disappeared again.”
I mean also, who doesn’t love themselves some Court TV?!
Noir lovers! Add this to your immediate TBR, and while you're at it - Add Art Bell to your auto-buy list.
How cliche of me to say I was flipping through the pages so fast they were on fire... But that's the only way to describe how captivating this story is. It's not often I physically feel anxious while reading a book, but I was stressed. Art Bell had me very stressed.
Henry Gladstone is a successful attorney. His world turned upside down the day his wife Leslie asked for a divorce and abruptly left with zero contact.
Now Leslie is standing in Henry's office, saying she needs a lot of money or both of them are in danger. Now she gets to turn his world upside down for a second time.
The Lies, betrayals, banter, and twists are plentiful. Bro codes are violated. Heart rates will increase. The author has a GREAT sense of humor, which makes the book so much more fun to read.
When I was finished, I learned the author was the President of CourtTV and created the Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central). Now I understand why this book was so perfectly executed with thrills and humor. This is a masterpiece.
Thank you so much to Pacific and Coast publishing and the author for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Oh Henry. You poor, poor fool. This was a fun read and I was engaged throughout. I loved the MC’s sense of humour and wit but found his constant surrender to what he thinks is a beautiful woman a bit infuriating. It made him out to be super shallow. And what he did for his ex wife Leslie is just wild to me. This mystery/thriller was crafted in a way where you just know there’s something more to what is actually going on. Early on, you don’t trust Leslie and side with Henry’s wariness and cautiousness of the truth, so the anticipation of figuring out what really happened was what kept me interested. I will say I did find the female characters could have used more dimension. I think this would have been great if there were multiple pov as I found they were quite surface level. Overall a quick and easy read.
A lawyer, an angry Russian, and a woman who knows how to get what she wants make this book a thrilling read. The very witty dialogue had me launching at times. It’s not often I read a book with a lawyer as a main character and it’s not a courtroom drama but I loved it. The author pulls from several backstories and it definitely keeps the book interesting. If you are looking for a good crime thriller with plenty of bad Russians and deceitful women this is a book you will definitely want to read.
Noir Thriller Blend Legal Thriller Reminiscent of Early Grisham. I think the most recent of John Grisham's books I've read was Bleachers, and that was *far* from a legal thriller of any form. But I read a lot of his earlier works (The Firm, The Chamber, The Runaway Jury, The Pelican Brief, etc) many years ago, and here Bell brings to mind a question of "What if Grisham had taken a more noir tone with those books?" I honestly think the answer to that question is that you'd get something remarkably similar to what Bell has created here.
If you're more a fan of small town / low stress tales... this one isn't for you. If you prefer spice levels akin to a warm glass of milk... you're gonna get the vapors if you read this book, as its spice level is more akin to a jalapeno or so. Spicy enough to feel, without necessarily making your nose run like Niagara Falls.
Indeed, another decent comparison here - without the sheer brutality of that book - is Tom Clancy's Without Remorse, where both romance and thriller elements combine to make the tale as strong as it is, and with both thriller and romance elements being essential to the overall tale.
Except that, to be clear, this is no White Knight hero the way even John Clark is portrayed as. Bell went to great lengths to use a normal guy in a normal (ish) job as his central character here, and he does a great job of sticking to that ideal throughout this. So yes, our main guy is going to make mistakes. Things are going to be confusing and scary and awesome and nearly surreal at times... but that's because *life* is all of those things at times, and Bell is committed to showing at least elements of all of this.
Overall a solid tale within its type that bends and breaks enough conventions or even rules as to be refreshing, while at the same time conforming to enough of them to be comfortable for fans of its types of tale.
"...you hide yourself from others, doing everything you can to look the part--the tough guy, the smart guy, the tender guy--whatever works for you in the moment...when all is said and done, nobody knows the real you. Shakespeare said it right...all the world being a stage. And Shakespeare knew what I know. Sometimes players get played."
Oh boy does Henry get played in the fast paced character driven twisty wise cracking What She's Hiding by, smooth modern day noir mystery thriller author, Art Bell.
Henry's life is a good one. He's been with the same law firm for ten years. He lucked into a great upscale NYC apartment. He has a loyal best friend. He's a nice guy leading a quiet life...until her. Leave it to a sexy dame to take down an otherwise intelligent man.
He falls hard for Leslie. But their whirlwind marriage ends in divorce. It's been four years since he's seen her and she broke his heart. Now she's in his office saying if he doesn't give her $250,000 they are both dead. What follows takes place in a few days and involves Russian mobsters, a mystery ring that may be from royalty, a really bad off off Broadway play, the famed Tiffany Jewelers, and the cops.
What a fun read with Henry's wise cracks reminiscent of Bruce Willis. He has the same ease and charm despite his reluctance to accept his ex-wife is not trustworthy. I figured out quite a bit, unlike Henry, but I'm not lovesick.
The author, creator of the Comedy Central network, knows how to entertain and does it quite well. He also captured NYC perfectly from the subway to the cabbies.
I hope this book is the start of a series. The chemistry between Henry and PI Gabriella is ripe for a partnership. What She's Hiding is a gem of a find.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
I wouldn't really consider it a 5 but it's not a 4. Probably 4.5/5 stars.
I received an ARC to review this book and am glad I picked it up.
After reading the book, the title of the book truly fits the whole story. But I cannot say that I am satisfied with how things ended.
We followed a lawyer as he went into a lot of trouble finding his ex-wife whom he vowed never to speak to again. But under the life-and-death situation that he's in, the only answer is finding her. The whole chase is exciting and will keep you reading. I also like that the character is bad at his job of being discreet and finding his ex-wife without putting himself in harm's way. It makes his character more believable.
I also like the little romance sprinkled in the story. It gives a respite from the violence and thrill while reading the book. However, as I said, I am not fully satisfied with how things were wrapped up. The ending felt quite rushed and I didn't get the answer I was looking for. But I guess that makes the story closer to real life.
Overall, I was surprised by how invested I was in this book, considering I am on a reading slump. And I think this book cured it. It felt like a good palette cleanser from all the fantasy and dystopian stories that I have been reading lately.
Highly recommend it if you are looking for a story to help you out of your slump and will get you frustrated at someone's ex-wife and a lawyer's bad life choices.
What a great ride it was to read Art Bell’s "What She's Hiding" that published 5/25/25. A thriller that takes you from a law firm to the Russian mob to stolen jewelry via a fast-paced rollercoaster ride of a Whodunnit - this book was fun!
Henry Gladstone is a lawyer who’s finally getting his life back together after he divorced his ex-wife Leslie. That is, until she walks back into his life one day asking for a quarter-of-a-million dollars otherwise she and he would be in grave danger. He tells her again to get lost and after his apartment is ransacked and Leslie has disappeared, he does find himself in grave danger, unless he solves WHY all of this is happening. And why he is involved.
I appreciated the clean and witty writing as well as the team of characters helping Harry and can see how this book could be Book One in a series…there is more to discover in this story!
Also, an added bonus for New Yorkers, or lovers of NYC, are the descriptions and comments about this great city that “ya just gotta love!”
Thank you to Art Bell, Pacific and Court and Ulysses Press to read this arc of this terrific thriller!
This novel could almost live in the Romantic Suspense genre. While we learn early on that New York lawyer, Henry Gladstone has been fooled by his ex-wife, Leslie, it isn’t very long before we discover he would give anything to renew their relationship.
Set mainly in Manhattan, the drama eventually details calls from a Russian mobster to frighten both Henry and his former wife with threats of kidnapping, blackmail and even death. Her lies continue to be questioned until Henry is beaten and found by a private investigator hired by his best friend.
Art Bell’s well-crafted story, What She’s Hiding, allows us to see how a man can continue to believe in a woman, even after being robbed of his savings, when love is blind. Leslie was very good at deception. So, was her story really true, or was she trying to set herself up for a life of riches.
This is a fast read and one you should put on your TBR list.
What She’s Hiding by Art Bell is a character-driven mystery with an engaging writing style and a good dose of dry humor that made it easy to keep turning the pages. The voice is fresh and conversational, and I appreciated the tone the author brought to the story.
There were a few things that didn’t fully click for me—some inconsistencies in the background details and a few moments where the dialogue felt slightly off in tone. I also found the pacing a bit uneven in places, and the story wraps up in a way that might leave some readers wanting more resolution.
That said, the concept was strong, the writing was enjoyable, and I’d definitely be open to reading more from this author in the future. If you like slower-burn mysteries with a slightly quirky edge, this one might be a good fit for your TBR.
Thank you to the author and publisher for granting my request to read this e-ARC and provide my honest opinions.
To the troubles that find their ways to us even when we have no hand in them! Henry was a stand-up guy who had a crazy dame for a wife, and the troubles that came with this beauty were not worth it at all!!!
I liked this book, but when I read the synopsis, I was expecting more intense scenes; however, what can be more intense than a life-or-death situation? Ha! I enjoyed the drama, and the ending was so satisfying!
Thank you once again to the author and publisher for the e-ARC.
Took this book on a cruise and wondered, "Is reading a new author a good idea for a week getaway?" I definitely am glad I took it with me. Love and/or lust can make us do crazy things. So when Henry's ex wife, Leslie, shows up begging for help who wouldn't want to help someone we loved? Then you get to know Leslie's in trouble with Boris, her ex-fiancee, who happens to be a Russian mobster is looking for a special item. Apparently, it's an item worth killing for.
I thought What She's Hiding was fast paced, entertaining, and devious all in one which is something I'd enjoy :)
What She’s Hiding isn’t my usual genre, but I was pleasantly surprised by how invested I became—especially with the twist about the ring not being real, which added a clever layer to the story.
That said, the ending felt really rushed. After all the buildup, I was left with more questions than answers, and I wish the author had taken more time to tie up loose ends. One major frustration for me was the main character’s relationship with Leslie. It became increasingly grating as the story went on, and by the end, I was more annoyed than intrigued.
Overall, it was a solid, fast-paced read with some memorable moments—but the resolution could’ve used more depth. 3.5/5

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway. This book kept my attention throughout. The maid character was a little unbelievable. I just had a difficult time believing that an attorney working in a large Manhattan firm would be as stupid as this guy. He married a women that he knew nothing about. He handed over large sums of money to a lying woman. The book is an okay read but it's definitely not one that surprises the reader.
It's a captivating read, no doubt about it. Henry's a lawyer and is married to Leslie - until she drops the D word unexpectedly. Then she needs lots of money to keep them both out of danger. Let the twists, lies, and betrayal begin. I'm not sure how the author conveyed those qualitites while inserting humor but he did. With a big city setting and plenty of violence, this is a thriller from the word go. I do think dual POV would have been a great addition but hey, I was just along for the ride.
What She’s Hiding follows Henry, a lawyer who finds himself entangled in his ex-wife’s troubles. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the story threw in some unexpected twists. The humor is consistent throughout, making it an engaging and enjoyable read.
Bell’s debut novel took me on a thrilling ride that carried me from page one all the way through the ending. His language pulses with energy and is suffused with a noir feel that gives the novel a unique vibe. And his protagonist will break your heart and have you scratching your head sometimes, but you’ll follow him anywhere. Looking forward to a sequel!
Highly recommend!!! … quite the page turner!!! I throughly enjoyed the author’s writing style, voice, humor… and character development. AND counting on more stories with Henry and Gabriella… do their thing!!!
DNF - can’t get past the broski commentary. I find it offensive and can’t condone the teen boy/adult women scenario. I would be more apt to believe this was written in the 1960’s
I really loved this book -- it was fast-paced and the main character was very likeable. Hard to believe this is a first novel, but I sure can't wait for the next one!
This book had a lot of intrigue built around our main female character. I liked the way it kept me on my toes guessing as to what her true story was, however, I felt like the ending fell a bit flat. I wanted more surprise or more danger or more excitement.
