The Wand Keepers #1

A Sky Full of Dragons

Rate this book
For younger fans of Witchlings and Eva Evergreen comes a light-hearted and whimsical middle grade fantasy about a young girl who must save her witch aunt from an uncommonly voracious hat.Where dragons take flight, through the dark of the night. Where the fire ignites, you will find the light. Aunt Cauldroneyes is always looking into cauldrons. She’s found everything from giggling moons to troll nose rings, but when she looks inside a purple cauldron one stormy night, she finds a girl with blue freckles. The old witch raises the girl and names her Spella. They live in Hungry Snout Forest in a crooked house with doors enchanted to smell like chocolate. In the attic full of floating fabric and biting buttons, Aunt Cauldroneyes teaches Spella how to make magical hats for creatures like unicorns and dragons, giants and goblins. When Spella turns eight, she receives an invitation to Dragon’s Knob, a school for wand witchery and wizardry. But on the very night Spella is set to leave, a stranger appears with a growling hat that swallows Aunt Cauldroneyes and steals her away! To rescue her aunt, Spella must go up into a sky full of dragons and to her new school. With protesters outside the gates threatening the school’s academic freedom and a deepening mystery within the walls, Spella and her new friend Tolden are thrust into the mystery of her aunt’s disappearance and a long-buried secret hidden somewhere in the school.

Favorite author Tiffany McDaniel has a shiny new middle grade fantasy series on the horizon and book one, A Sky Full of Dragons, is out now! She plans to release a back-to-school book in early fall with a summer book arriving in late spring/early summer! How fun is that?!

I shared in my stories I don’t read middle grade fantasy often enough, but I’m ecstatic Tiffany McDaniel inspired me to do so with this release because it brought all the nostalgia of the fantasy books that made me a reader in elementary school, and it’s truly written for all ages.

In this first installment of The Wand Keepers, we meet Aunt Cauldroneyes, Stella, and Tolden, along with an amazing cast of side characters, including Egypt, the mummified cat that, of course, captured my heart. During the story Aunt Cauldroneyes is captured by a growling hat, and Spella sets out on some special adventures, including school for wand witchery and wizardry in order to find her aunt.

The descriptions are everything we expect from McDaniel’s beautiful writing. The world building is, well… out of this world. Just amazing. I could visualize all of it cinematically and hope one day we’ll see it in screen form. A Sky Full of Dragons is a captivating adventure and a reading experience I treasured. I can’t wait for Spella and Tolden’s next journey coming soon!

I received a gifted copy.

From Tiffany McDaniel the author of one of my all-time favorite books ever, Betty, and the author of my favorite book of 2023, On the Savage Side, comes a new fantasy middle-grade book, The Wand Keepers!

Not only is Tiffany McDaniel one of the best literary fiction authors of our time but she's an amazing middle-grade author!

I read this one with my two middle school boys,
who are tough critics when it comes to books but they absolutely loved this one! My oldest even asked if he could reread it on his own after we finished🥺 All 3 of us are excited for the next book in the series!

Vivid descriptions, amazing world building, adorable illustrations, and lots of lol moments, The Wand Keepers is a fun and magical story! I read a lot of middle grade books with my kids but this is one that as an adult, I actually enjoyed! Do yourself a favor, and get this book!

The Wand Keepers by Tiffany McDaniel is available now!

The moment I met Spella and her Aunt Cauldroneyes, I was hooked.

This insanely whimsical book made me SO nostalgic, I could almost feel myself reading it in my 6th grade school library. I have half a mind to laminate the book in plastic and type it's Dewey Decimal system number on it's side.

Spella, the sweetest little main character we could ask for, has blue freckles and lives with her Aunt. Excited and a little nervous, Spella is preparing for her admission to Dragon’s Knob, a school for wand witchery and wizardry. The night before her departure, Aunt Cauldroneyes: a magical hat maker, is whisked away by a growling hat (swallowed actually!!)- leaving poor Spella to save her.

Spella embarks on a quest that will have you smiling and giggling. In the school of magic, not all is what it seems, and as she makes friends they are thrust into a epic battles and mysteries along the way.

My favorite thing about this book are the footnotes included, explaining the creatures, places and history- enriching the storyline and making me smile along the way.

Thank you to Tiffany McDaniel for this book, I won it from one of her giveaways and the bookbox included my very own invitation to Dragon's Knob and a list of needed supplies. It added to the magical experience!

Whimsical. Weird. Wonderful.

The most accurate words to describe Tiffany McDaniel's newest book. Thank you to queen Tiffany McDaniel, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and Simon & Schuster Audio for the gifted copies. The hardcover and paperback drop this coming Tuesday, September 24.

Truth and OBVIOUS info bomb, I haven't read a middle grade book...whalp... since I was in middle school. I have so many questions. Have these always been so magnificently random and quirky? Why aren't adult stories filled with this much cozy and whimsy? Asking for a friend.

You guys know Tiffany McDaniel's as the author of "Betty" and "On the Savage Side." Well the queen is entering the fantasy chat with "The Wand Keepers" A Sky Full of Dragons." This is the M O S T Dani book that I have read in a LONG time. If a book could represent my soul, this would be it. It's random, fun, quirky and really really T O A D F I R E. *wheeze*

The vibes? If Coraline, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, the Spiderwick Chronicles met Tim Burton then mated and had the coziest little baby it would be this. If magical schools, fantastical creatures that might be unicorns that play in a rock band and a pumpkin that is a store filled with supplies for young witches and wizards is the stuff you need this fall. You need this middle grade lil story in your life.

Growing up and finding solace in the magical worlds above Tiffany McDaniel filled my soul with nostalgia. I can see this series being a new age addiction for the young folks. It's seriously the perfect book for a young reader (and to be frank is an amusing read for all ages). It's imaginative. It's absurd (which I know young Dani would have been obsessed with). It's modern. It's three hundred pages of pure joy.

🎧 This is a PSA. I need Rachanee Lumayno to narrate all of my fantasy books. This human is a natural story teller. She has this beautifully playful voice that was a spot on pick for voicing this cute fantasy story. While I was listening, I felt like a little kid again sitting up at a librarian reading out loud from a book. BUT, I would recommend getting the print version for two reasons... first the fun footnotes that are added throughout the story and second (the most important) THE BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS that capture the world so gloriously throughout the pages. You truly do not want to miss them.

Read this book, if any of the below is what you need:
🕷️ If you read 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' 'Narnia' 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Coraline' growing up
🕷️ Love and appreciate nature
🕷️ Are addicted to watching Tim Burton films
🕷️ Found family
🕷️ Magical Schools and creatures
🕷️ Have been labelled as quirky and random before
🕷️ Have an affinity for unique hats
🕷️ Dodos?

BOOK REVIEW

The Wand Keepers: A Sky Full of Dragons
By Tiffany McDaniel
Illustrated by Ayesha Rubio

ICYMI, I'm a huge Tiffany McDaniel fan, so when she reached out and offered me a copy of her upcoming release, the first book of a new middle grade fantasy series, I obviously said ABSOLUTELY!!! Thanks @authortiffanymcdaniel for sending me a copy, and for the lovely inscription. 🩷

Most of us recognize Tiffany McDaniel's name from her adult fiction novels: Betty, On the Savage Side, and The Summer That Melted Everything. But she's taken a bit of a different direction in her writing this time, and I'm so here for it!

A Sky Full of Dragons follows Spella, a young, blue-freckled girl who must save Witch Cauldroneyes, the aunt who raised her, from the unsavory characters who've kidnapped her. It blends fantasy with mystery and adventure, and important messages are woven throughout.

This book is SO much fun! It's playful and whimsical and, in true McDaniel fashion, is out-of-this-world (literally) imaginative! Parts are silly as all get-out, sure to elicit loads of laughs from young readers. We've got witches and wizards, shape-shifting dodos, magic spells galore (from healing sea slug sniffles to defeating a farting pie-butt), enchanted hats, a dog made of socks, a mummy cat, and a plethora of creative magical creatures and objects. While this is marketed toward children, readers of all ages will enjoy spending time in Dragon's Knob and Hungry Snout Forest. I can't wait to see what McDaniel has in store for book two!

📌 A Sky Full of Dragons is publishing in both hardcover and paperback on September 24th. Preorder your copy wherever books are sold.

This was fantastic! I fell in love with Tiffany McDaniels’s writing after reading her debut novel, The Summer That Melted Everything. I couldn’t wait to see what she would do with a middle-grade novel and I am happy to report that it is everything I hoped it would be. This magical, whimsical tale should appeal to children and adults, really anyone who enjoys highly creative stories with a lot of heart.

Spella, with her blue freckles, was found in a cauldron as an infant by Aunt Cauldroneyes. They live in a small house with their mummified cat, Egypt, making magical hats with big personalities. Spella accidentally lets in a growling hat that swallows Aunt Cauldroneyes and takes her away. This happens just before she is to leave for Dragon’s Knob, a school for wand magic. Spella must find her way at her new school while also trying to figure out what happened to Aunt Cauldroneyes.

Spella was an easy character to like. She is smart, works hard, and cares about those around her. I had a great time watching her learn new things at school while making new friends. This imaginative story included everything from shape-shifting dodos to magical sandwiches. Even the footnotes were entertaining and whimsical, sharing explanations and suggestions with the reader alongside artwork of feet or shoes of various styles.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I was quickly pulled into Spella’s magical world and wanted to see her succeed at school, make friends, and find her Aunt Cauldroneyes. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put this book down and look forward to many more adventures in this series.

I received a review copy of this book from the author and Simon & Schuester Books for Young Readers.

Reading 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐀 𝐒𝐤𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐬 by Tiffany McDaniel transported me straight back to being nine years old, the same age I devoured the 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 series in under two weeks. I remember it so vividly because, really, how could I not? It’s 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙋𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧, for Christ’s sake! That same sense of wonder, adventure, and magic lingers long after closing the book, making this an absolute delight to read.

This is the kind of story that captures hearts, whether you’re a kid, a teenager, or an adult. It’s fun, immersive, and brimming with warmth. Writing middle-grade fiction is already a challenge, but crafting a middle-grade fantasy novel that tugs at the heartstrings? That’s an even taller order, and McDaniel pulls it off beautifully.

The story follows an old witch named Aunt Cauldroneyes, who spends her days peering into cauldrons. She’s found all sorts of strange things — giggling moons, troll nose rings — but one stormy night, she sees something extraordinary: a girl with blue freckles. She takes the girl in, naming her Spella, and raises her in Hungry Snout Forest, where their crooked house has enchanted doors that smell like chocolate. There, amid floating fabric and mischievous buttons, Aunt Cauldroneyes teaches Spella how to craft magical hats for unicorns, dragons, giants, and goblins.

On Spella’s eighth birthday, she receives an invitation to Dragon’s Knob, a school for wand witchery and wizardry. But just as she’s about to leave, a stranger arrives, wearing a growling hat that swallows Aunt Cauldroneyes whole and spirits her away. Determined to save her, Spella embarks on a journey through a sky full of dragons to her new school, where she and her friend Tolden uncover the truth behind her aunt’s disappearance, along with a long-buried secret hidden within the school’s walls.

I’ve heard from friends that Tiffany McDaniel is an incredibly gifted writer, but this was my first experience with her work, and I adored every moment of it. I’ve also been told that her novel 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 is an even more profound coming-of-age story filled with heart. If this middle-grade fantasy had me this excited, I can only imagine what she’s capable of in her other books.

If you enjoy whimsical, heartwarming fantasy with a dash of mystery, 𝐀 𝐒𝐤𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧 is a must-read. It has the nostalgic magic of 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, the charm of 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐫, and the emotional depth of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧. The world feels alive, the characters are unforgettable, and the adventure is one you won’t want to end. Whether you’re in it for the magical hats, the sky full of dragons, or the enchanting storytelling, this book is one of those that you’d want to reread time and time again.

(Thank you, Tiffany McDaniel, for gifting me a copy and making me feel like a kid again.)

I absolutely adored this book. It had all of the things I kind of look out for when reading middle grade. It felt like a book I could read to my little’s and that we could all enjoy together and I loved that vibe the most.

The world is whimsical and FULL of magical creatures. I liked the little footnotes explaining each one. It better builds the world and all of the different aspects to the plot. I loved the general theme of appreciating and taking care of nature. It’s playful and imaginative.

I am intrigued by the beginnings of some found family moments within Spella’s journey through her new school. I happened to have listened to the audiobook and thought it was fantastic too. I absolutely will be continuing this series.

Overall audience notes:
- Middle Grade Fantasy
- Language: none
- Romance: none
- Violence: low

bof, c'est sympathique, plein de bons sentiments mais trop mielleux, hyper manichéen (Charmille est très très gentille, Corbin très très méchant). l'aventure se tient mais c'est sans relief, assez oubliable.

What a way to start off spooky season with my kiddos! They ate this up. Y’all, they were CACKLING at all of the kid humor. Did you know unicorns 🦄 actually prefer to eat boogers? I didn’t 😆.

This is my first read by the author, and I’m excited to check out her adult books. This one is middle grade, and based on my experience, it was done perfectly. I felt like there was a lot of great world building (which I love). The entire story felt so quirky and magical. My boys are 7 and 4, and I wasn’t sure how my 4 yo would do with the world building, but he was so invested!

There are some elements of grief surrounding Spella’s aunt missing, though I don’t think it’s too much for the age group, just thought I’d mention it. My boys and I can’t wait for book two! I’m hoping to get to learn more about Spella’s background!

If you’re looking for a quirky, cozy, magical ✨, spooky season read for the littles in your life, or even yourself, I definitely recommend checking this one out!

A fun, whimsical read brimming with magic from start to finish!

I really enjoyed this, it's a quirky, different take on a magical school setting and the world felt so unique and exciting. Spella, our heroine, is the perfect guide into this fantastical world, and I think this book did a fantastic job of setting up for a longer series. I imagine the next book will be even better as the rules of the world are established and the characters already have their footing.

A perfectly magical read for anyone looking for a touch of whimsy during autumn.

Screaming from the rooftops for the masses to read this cozy middle grade book; here are some reasons to convince you 😤😤

- From the same author as Betty, On the Savage Side, & The Summer that Melted Everything, Tiffany McDaniel tells her version of a magical witchy school story that is just steeped in the Indigenous perspective & filled with social commentary made accessible for a younger audience. (Side note about diverse middle grade, my favourite thing about it is how it tackles these deeply important conversations in ways that get kids asking big questions about the world & as a librarian tech at an elementary-junior high school, books like this fill my heart with so much joy & I’m so excited to bring this into my library & shove it down the kids throats)

- the childlike whimsy and wonder and weirdness is represented sooooo 🧑‍🍳😘🤌🤌 & it’s something that you don’t often see in older age ranges & it’s truly such a magical feeling & I wish more people engaged with middle grade.

- the disability rep in here made me cry, it’s done in such a cute way that shows how in a world with magic, you don’t have to rely on the magical cure trope & emphasizes the importance of accessibility for all.

- the conversations about protecting nature and the world are so deeply relevant in here, & the emphasis on storytelling and the importance of books and libraries my heart is just soaring

- the beautiful little illustrations throughout & the clever & silly way the McDaniel used footnotes throughout, this book is just so clever

In short: preorder this book, read this book, & dabble in middle-grade novels!!!!!

Thank you so much to Tiffany McDaniel for reaching out to send me this magical little book, it’s become a favourite & I need more Spella!!! 🫶🫶

McDaniel has branched out to younger readers with this new series, The Wand Keepers, and if the first book is any indication, she has a huge hit on her hands!
Spella, our heroine, lives with her Aunt Cauldroneyes (best name) helping her make her famous hats. On the eve of her journey to a new school called Dragon’s Knob, her aunt is kidnapped. Bella, along with her mummified cat and multitude of magical hats, set out to rescue her. A puppy made of socks, shape shifting dodos, and growling hats are just a few of the magical creatures found within these pages.

This is a rollicking adventure full of whimsey and heart that will appeal to young readers and adults alike. Bearded dragons are pretty into it as well. Just ask Pogo. I loved the disability representation, as well as the social and political commentary. It provides some great opportunities for young readers to ask questions and dive deeper into important topics!

On a personal note, my son and I were thrilled to read about Tolden, one of the students at Dragon’s Knob, and how he is hard of hearing. My son is deaf in one ear and there are very few books that include a character like himself. Representation matters, especially for young readers. Thank you for allowing my son to be seen Tiffany, and with a dragon to boot! We are so excited to see where this series takes us!

I featured this one when it released and was excited to finally be able to pick it up!

This book was Toadfire!!!…IYKYK

A perfect October read aloud… it coincides well with the 10/1 being the first day students attend Dragons Knob, a school of wand witchery and wizardry, where our main gal Spella is invited to attend. On the same night Spella is suppose to leave her home in the Hungry Snout Forest her Aunt Cauldroneyes disappears in a very mysterious way and Spella must leave for school accompanied by Dodo and the hope to find her Aunt.

A book with zany footnotes🙌🏻 like… “Funky-Clunky Monster Records, must be kept in a locked cabinet on nights with a full moon, or records will change into werewolves.”

A very descriptive setting like… “I would sit in her big poufy chair that smelled like cinnamon, catch one of the books flying by, and read to the hats until we all fall asleep.”

And a few memorable sentences to tab… “A forager is a girl of many pockets.”

What I wouldn’t give for some pumpkin smash… bubbling juice served in hollowed out pumpkins. Or attend Magical Arts class! I’m looking forward to more adventures with Spella! Whether she has Tolden (her new BFF) over to visit her and the hats or she goes and visits Tolden by the sea!

Thank you @simonkids 📖

This is seriously such a fantastic, magical middle grade book. I almost never read middle grade books, let alone fantasy. I was offered a copy of this and figured, why not jump right in since it looked like a quick, fun read. And it absolutely was! It completely helped me to escape the real world chaos, into a magical world of Witches and wizards. Think like a younger Harry Potter type book. The writing is spectacular and McDaniels is amazing with her world building. This one is sure to be a favorite among younger readers, and even some adults who need a break from reality for a bit! Really enjoyed this one!

Thank you to the author and publisher for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I loved following Spella in this story as she makes a new friend, goes to a magic school and tries to rescue Aunt Cauldroneyes. A Sky Full Of Dragons was such an imaginative fantasy book that young readers should absolutely adore. This book is sure to leave you smiling, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved this book so much that I finished it in one sitting and immediately started reading it with my youngest daughter, knowing she would absolutely be captivated by it. And sure enough, just a few pages in, she was hooked!

My daughter is 10, and for years, she’s struggled to enjoy reading. I’ve gone through countless books trying to help her find her niche. So for her to tell me, she loves a book. Just know that is a huge step for her. We also recently did a Harry Potter marathon, and as soon as we started this book, she told me it reminded her of Harry Potter!

Now - I want to extend a HUGE thank you and a virtual hug to Tiffany McDaniel for gifting me this incredible book! My only complaint? I wish there were a million more like it.

The story is full of quirky, imaginative fun, and I was drawn in from the start, not wanting it to end. It felt like I was reading a movie, and I sincerely hope it becomes a tv series or a film one day!

This book was an absolute delight! Some might even call it TOADFIRE! I loved everything about this book. It was magical, and imaginative and while it is a middle grade book, it was one of my favorite books I read in October. I will be the first to admit that I do not read many fantasy books or books with dragons and other magical elements, but this book just seemed to be such a perfect blend of fantasy and mystery and I loved how it also incorporated topics like academic freedom, but in a way that was easy enough for young children to understand. The characters in this book were just splendid. I fell in love with Spella from the very start and I loved her bond with Aunt Cauldroneyes. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Spella and Tolden and loved their dynamic throughout the book! The next book cannot come soon enough, and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

The book contains some cute illustrations throughout and fun footnotes which add to the story. It’s available in both paperback and hardcopy and audio format.

🎧I alternated between the physical book and the audiobook, which was narrated by Rachanee Lumayno. Lumayno was truly brilliant at narrating the audiobook! I absolutely loved my time listening to this audiobook, and felt like she did such an amazing job bringing Spella and the rest of the characters to life. If you are looking for a dynamic audiobook, this is it!

Thank you to the author, Tiffany McDaniel, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and Simon Audio for the copies to review.

Tiffany McDaniel has written two of my most favorite books, Betty and On The Savage Side (I still need to read The Summer That Melted Everything), and when she reached out about her newest Middle Grade / Fantasy series, The Wand Keepers, of course I was all in. A Sky Full of Dragons was absolutely wonderful, or rather, it was Toadfire! The audio was equally fantastic, I followed along with the book as there were illustrations that I loved, and together it was an incredible reading experience that I enjoyed as an adult. It has everything - cozy vibes, dragons, dodo birds (gasp!), Aunt Caldroneyes, who makes magical hats for unicorns, dragons, giants and goblins (I mean really), a girl named Spella who is about to go off to Dragon’s Knob (a school for wand witchery and wizardry), and so much more.

I devoured this in one sitting, and was completely engrossed in the story, the characters, and the atmosphere. This was so creative and full of magic, I loved it like a sky full of dragons (IYKYK) and I think you will too!

This will be available in both hardcover and paperback Tuesday, September 24th! I already cannot wait for the next book!

This book was pure TOADFIRE! 🐸🔥 It sparked my imagination in a way I haven’t felt since childhood.

Tiffany McDaniel has done it again, but this time she steps into a whole new genre. Truly one of the most gifted writers of our generation, IMO. Her ability to weave a story that tackles social issues like conservation, protecting animals, bullying, and featuring characters with disabilities is just incredible.

Although it's Middle-Grade, it’s an imaginative read that adults will love just as much. The cover art deserves its own spotlight, too—I'm obsessed with this style! Fun fact: Tiffany shared that her mother, Betty, was part of the inspiration for some character designs. 🖼️❤️

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a heartwarming and thought-provoking escape.

A special thank you to Tiffany for sending me a copy in advance to review and spread the word. This book will be published in both Hardback and Paperback in the US on September 24th!

Thank you so much to the author, Tiffany McDaniel, for sending a copy of A Sky Full of Dragons my way! 💖

”Today belongs to you. Do something wonderful with it.”

Tiffany McDaniel journeyed into the world of middle grade fantasy & absolutely NAILED it. A Sky Full of Dragons is filled with cozy vibes, never ending family & friendships and life lessons fitting for any one, regardless of their age.

This book overtook me with nostalgia! Wow, did this remind me of reading fantasies as a child & rooting so hard for the kid to save the day. I loved how A Sky Full of Dragons made me feel — it was a reminder that we all need a little magic, even when we’re older.

There’s also these little life lessons throughout like to always be kind & that all animals are so incredibly special. I absolutely adored this aspect! OH & the special tidbits of A A Sky Full of Dragons, such as spells in between chapters and little footnotes where the art next to it is literally animal/fantasy creatures’ feet.

Tiffany McDaniel put a lot into writing this book from fun little lingo (warty wobbles, anyone?) to background info on multiple things that she created. Admittedly, there was a moment where I was nervous that I’d be TOO flooded with information & not remember what’s what and who’s who, but it did come together and I absolutely adored this world and the characters in it.

I definitely urge you to pick A Sky Full of Dragons up, for either you or the witches/wizards in your life 💖

Thank you to Tiffany McDaniel and Simon and Schuster Publishing for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review. This book was so cute and lovely and I wish I had a small child to read it to in bed before we fell asleep at night. From the first chapter, McDaniel transports the reader into Spella's world with Aunt Cauldroneyes. The small details in this book make all the difference, perpetuating the magic into the reader's life. I love the little spells that break up the book in between chapters as well as the tiny footnotes on the bottom that just add to the world and the story. The settings were extremely vivid and I felt like I was going to Dragon's Knob with Spella. The hats were definitely my favorite part and now I want a magic hat of my own! I thought the themes explored within were great for kids around eight years old and I would definitely recommend this to a guardian who is looking to introduce their kid to fantasy.

Also, shoutout to the cover artist/illustrator, Ayesha Rubio, because they did a PHENOMENAL job!

I am SO EXCITED to tell you all about this whimsical and fun middle-grade book. Just in time for fall, A Sky Full of Dragons hit the magical beats for me. From sentient hats to mummified cats, this imaginative book will appeal to younger readers and older readers alike.

To find her missing aunt, Spella enrolls in a magical school to become a wand keeper. Accompanied by her mummified cat, Egypt, and her aunt’s magical hats, she learns spells and tracks down the mystery of what happened to her aunt. Spella is a determined and clever protagonist who stands up for what she believes in especially when it comes to bullies.

The footnotes were my favorite element and truly brought the story to life.

The vibes: Tim Burton meets Studio Ghibli with a sprinkle of Nevermoor and Spiderwick Chronicles.

I received a free copy of this book for review.

This is a very fantastical and whimsical story that is perfect for reading during Halloween season. It was so whimsical that I wasn’t even sure what was happening for a bit at the beginning 😅. The vibes kind of reminded me of Alice in Wonderland meets Hogwarts. It also reminded me a bit of The Girl Who Drank the Moon. The illustrations and footnotes were very fun touches. I also love a good found family storyline and this one had a really sweet one.

This is such a fun book review to write! Once or twice a year I’ll buddy read a book with my 13-year-old niece but she’s growing up and getting too cool for me so our book clubs have been few and far between lately. Thankfully, I have one more younger niece in the lineup and A SKY FULL OF DRAGONS was the perfect book for us!

Nothing impresses me more than a well written book so you can imagine how amazed I am when an author has the ability to successfully switch things up and write a new genre for a different audience. Tiffany McDaniel (of BETTY fame!!!) has created the coziest, most magical world for middle grade readers and beyond.

I’m not a fantasy reader and I usually gravitate towards dark and twisty, but this was the perfect light and comforting story and I really loved it (and truly needed it!)! When the author reached out, she mentioned that she wanted her new book to feel like a hug for readers and that’s exactly what it delivered. Life is stressful and I’ve always felt like reading is the perfect escape. Sometimes it’s especially nice to escape into a wholesome and cozy world with lovable characters and low stakes!

Read this if you’re in the mood for:
🍂a book adults and kids will enjoy
🍂 a cozy story to get you ready for fall
🍂mystery, fantasy, and adventure
🍂a whimsical world that is absolutely delightful
🍂great messages and themes surrounding disability, accessibility, the importance of reading, and protecting nature
🍂fabulous writing you’ve come to expect from an author like @authortiffanymcdaniel

My 8-year-old bestie and I both give this an A! She read alongside the audiobook in the car and thought it was just the coolest way to read a book!

🎧the audiobook was darling!!! My niece and I listened while traveling to her out of town soccer tournaments over the last two weekends and we both loved it. Thank you to @simonandschuster for the gifted audiobook!

🥳this gem of a book is out (in paperback AND hardcover) SEPT 24th! Thank you to the incredible author for the complimentary copy and allowing me (and my niece) to be an early reader!!!

Y'all. This is SUCH an adorable read!! I'd love to read this one with my nieces, I think they'd fall hard for these quirky, whimsical characters and their fantastical world of unicorns, dragons, and mummy cats. I laughed, I cried, I cheered for Spella. This is a middle grade book, but I'm nearing middle AGE and still loved it myself 🤣

There is obviously a lot of fun fantasy in here, but also some important topics and themes. I love when books (of any genre) teach you something, even if it's how to make a hat for a unicorn, and this one sneaks in some pretty serious lessons between the laughs and smiles. Definitely pick it up for spooky season, especially if you have a young reader!
