Rebel Without A Pause is the autobiography of Winnipeg’s best-known and most persistent political activist, Nick Ternette. For over forty years, Nick was one of the loudest voices of the Left, who ran for mayor multiple times and never shied away from asking elected officials tough questions. A champion of the rights of the poor and the disabled, sustainable ecology and public transit as well as a leader in Winnipeg’s peace movement, Nick was a thorn in the side of conservative politicians and city official for decades.
Written before his death in March 2013, Rebel Without A Pause invites us into the personal life and political memories of one of Winnipeg’s most cherished citizens.
I believe that a caring community is a necessary part of being human
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Nick Ternette was a colorful eccentric radical in Winnipeg politics. I never met him, but I knew of him. After reading the book, I realize that I attended the School of Social Work at the University of Manitoba at the same time he did. I learned that he was involved at the ground level of many of the important community organizations I have used as a consumer, and as referring worker. The average citizen of Winnipeg remembers him as "that guy who ran for mayor" or "that communist", but I have to say after reading his book, there were very few of his ideas, and points of views that I did not agree with. His methods may have ruffled some feathers along the way, but he leaves a very important legacy in Winnipeg. The book was an intimate glimpse into the whole man, not just his public persona, and I am thankful that his story got to be told.
