This just in: There’s a new cat in the neighborhood and she is all kinds of mysterious!
The Breaking Cat News crew has never met a cat quite like Goldie before. Street smart, wildlife savvy, and determined to solve the mystery of how her People vanished, Goldie is here to turn life in and out of the studio upside down! Along the way they’ll meet trash collecting raccoons, a fork wielding squirrel, and one brave little chipmunk!
Go undercover with Tommy and Beatrix as Goldie gets to the bottom of this case with the help of Lupin’s (stolen) tape recorder. It’s an exciting adventure for the BCN team with friends old and new, and you’re invited!
The fun doesn’t stop there! The “More to Explore” section includes all new paper dolls of Goldie and the wild lands creatures, as well as fun disguises for Beatrix and Tommy, and a tasty applesauce recipe to try.
Good as Goldie was another great Breaking Cat News collection introducing a new cat to the crew.
BCN reporters Elvis, Lupin, and Puck are back with another volume of the news that's important to the cats of the big pink house. From the baby's first birthday to several holiday celebrations to a big storm, these reporters cover it all. When a new cat arrives outside the studio, the reporters are determined to discover who she is and what she wants.
Breaking Cat News has been my favorite comic strip for over a decade and this collection is a perfect example of why. The strips are highly entertaining and the storylines are perfectly tailored to cats. The illustrations are adorable while perfectly capturing cats' energy and curiosity. Each cat is unique and with the expansion of the cast in this volume we get even more cute animals. Including raccoons, a squirrel, and a chipmunk this collection gave us a number of new animals to enjoy.
This volume focuses on the introduction of Goldie, an orange female stray found outside of studio, that becomes involved with the reporters. Goldie was left behind when her people moved and she's a detective searching for what happened to them which brings her in contact with the other cats. Goldie's introduction comes during a big storm and I liked how she was introduced to the other cats. In addition to Goldie joining the cast there were several other enjoyable stories including a Hamilton inspired series of strips centered on the theft of potato salad. The end of the book included a fun section about creating paper dolls of some of the cats as well as a recipe for Pucky's cozy spiced applesauce.
Overall Good as Goldie was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend the comics to cat lovers.
This might be the best one yet. I shall have to reread all eight books to confirm. Definitely not just for kids. Come on, I'm 70 and these are an automatic purchase. Also, I happen to have 4 apples sitting on the counter, so in the next day or two I'll be making that applesauce recipe.

It's all your favorite things about cable news -- for cats! The Cat News is back with another round of adventures. Here are four highlights:
🎂 Baby is one and the family is rolling out the red carpet. What will Woman and Man be wearing? Tune in for all the details.
😻 A mysterious gold cat seems to be haunting the neighborhood. What happened to Goldie's people? Is she real or a figment of Lupin's imagination?
🐭A band of four mice help themselves to Cat News equipment and plan a Thanksgiving pie heist. Will it be worth it?
🎄The last panels of this 8th chapter focus on the assimilation of Goldie into the Cat News apartment. Will there be peace on earth? Or at least in the living room?
Bonus: Includes paper doll patterns and a yummy applesauce recipe.
If you have been following this series, you will want to check this one out. Happy Publication Day! Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
“Good As Goldie” is the eighth Breaking Cat News Adventure book, collecting a bunch of Ms. Dunn’s daily comics all in one place. I have said it before and will say it again here: I don’t even pretend to “review” these books because I am completely in love with this comic and always find both the storylines and the artwork to be outstanding. Pucky remains my favourite (he always will), but I’m partial to all the cats, and the raccoons and the Robber Mice and the Children and the other People too. Here we meet Goldie and learn about her (sad, unfortunately far too common) backstory, as well as following the Robber Mice as they plot to Steal a Pie, among many other stories. There are a number of new outfits for the new characters at the back of the book, and I plan to try Puck’s cozy spiced applesauce recipe (minus the ginger, I’m allergic). Congratulations as ever to Georgia, her work continues to be stunning and inspirational; highly, highly recommended!
As the Breaking Cat News reports on the annual happenings in the house, there's a strange detective cat who is spotted around the neighborhood and is on the case of her missing humans, the baby learns to walk and leaves a trail of destruction in her wake, and holidays are celebrated appropriately.
This was my favorite Breaking Cat News book in a while. The baby learning to walk and the immediate after affects are hilarious. Goldie is the new detective in town and she introduces readers to the raccoons and skunks in the neighborhood through her interviews, and it was fun to meet them. And the usual cat antics are entertaining as always.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: Lupin intends violence on another cat but is thwarted. Ethnic diversity: Most humans are white. There are Latinx cats in a show some watch. LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: A pet was abandoned by its humans when they moved.
Georgia Dunn is not only a great cartoonist. She is also an amazing artist and story teller. And the woman understands cats.
It is a compilation of cartoons from her popular syndicated series Breaking Cat News. Much of this book tells the story of how Goldie became the newest addition to the cat population of the second floor of The Big Pink House. It also introduces us to the local raccoon colony who have made their home in a dumpster on the edge of the wild lands.
As a bonus feature, there are paper dolls of the cats and creatures involved in the ongoing story of Goldie's search for her missing people. In between that story are various other adventures of the resident BCN cats.
This book gets 5 stars for artwork and another 5 for story telling. Unfortunately Goodreads won't let me give it 10 stars.
3.75 Good as Goldie took me about halfway through before its odd charm really clicked for me. As my first experience with Georgia Dunn felt a bit chaotic at first — the art is wildly loose, hand-drawn, and full of this freewheeling analog energy you honestly don’t see much anymore.
But once I realized the cats were essentially acting as a kitty cable news commentary team — basically the CNN of cats — the humor started being tolerable. The feline point of view became increasingly funny, especially the deadpan reporting style from the clowder of anchor cats. Their coverage of the Mylar balloon stuck to the ceiling “longer than some of us have been alive” genuinely made me laugh out loud.
By the end, I was won over. My advice? Stick with it. The oddball rhythm eventually becomes its whole appeal.
One perk of working at a library is I get to preview books before they hit the shelf. Like this book! As with all BCN books, this was adorable. And BONUS, unlike with some of the past books, this one has all new contest rather than old comics that have been redone. And this made me very happy. It told the story of Goldie and how she came to live at the Big Pink House (). We also get to see more of the Raccoons and Robber Mice who, as anyone who follows the online comic knows, become very important later on. Intermixed with this are the usual one-off comics centering around birthdays, holidays, and day-to-days.
In short, this book was awesome! Although I'm looking forward to when Iggy and Ora Zella make it into the books!
This was even more delightful than I thought it would be. I loved reading Goldie's story all in one place. While the main story is about Goldie, there are also stories about the CN reporters learning more about the raccoons; the robber mice heist of a pie, and about The Girl going from first steps to running in a single day among other tales/tails. The extras at the back are always a lot of fun. There are so many good stories to report from the big pink house, its inhabitants, and its visitors and Georgia Dunn tells them very well. I love the artwork of these comics. It is so much more than simple line drawings; they are little watercolor paintings. The extra full page panels were great additions to this book.
Good as Goldie: an excellent BCN collection! The story of Goldie's arrival is woven in among a variety of beloved standalone strips and shorter arcs (the Girl's first birthday! the Hamilton-inspired potato-salad adventure! the oven-rack tradition!). There's a strong sense of the changing seasons/passage of time in this collection, keeping it well-paced. (And I think I finally figured out what's up with the page backgrounds--the white backgrounds are for weekday-size strips and the brightly-colored ones are for the longer Sunday strips.) A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Another Breaking Cat News continues the story of the woman and the man and the whole cat collection. The kids are getting older, the seasons are changing, and there's a new cat in the neighborhood. After a lot of debate on whether this new cat is real and a mystery of where her people have gone, Goldie joins Elvis, Lupin, and Puck to some joy and a few squabbles. Full of puns and enjoyment, this is another great installment of this series and I look forward to more.
The continuing comic series about cats reporting on household events as if they were news reporters. It’s a cute and funny read, that still perfectly captures cats and their antics. In this one, there is a Hamilton spoof, the cats deal with a thunderstorm, there is a mysterious new cat spotted outside, the cats meet some raccoons that live in the neighborhood, and the new cat is rescued after being abandoned by her people.
I love these cats so much! All of the staff, both on site and their affiliates (bookstore, Tommy and everyone else!) struggle through the storm. Puck and Lupin are still my favourites. Lupin not accepting Goldie into the household but Puck and her getting on is hilarious. Christmas and the baby learning to walk is great. I love the little Christmas wreath on the cat news logo. Can't wait for the next book.
Another great book from the Breaking Cat New series and Georgia Dunn. A lot of this book focuses on how Goldie joined the household. But there are a number of other great stories in the book including the Hamilton parody that really introduced me to the musical Hamilton back when it was originally published in 2019.
In this inaptly named piece the landscape is stuffed with more cats, more humans (large and small), some smaller beasts (perhaps mice), and even a birthday cake, but alas, unless the eponymously named Goldie is bad, the results of this crowd equal disappointingly little of previous joy in the series.
I am not the target audience (38m childless) but i love the concept of a bunch of cats doing a news report about day to day life. It is very cute, but very shallow. Think like old time newpaper cartoons that sometimes made you smile with the obvious punchlines. Did not care for this volume as much as last one i read.
These are just adorable if you’re a cat lover. Every time I get to read a new volume I double check on the vague hopes I’ve missed seeing a volume and have another book of them to read. Sadly I’m caught up…
I love this strip; I started reading it prior to its being picked up on GoComics and then newspapers and making the leap into books. The art is charming, the characters are lovely, and this collection made me happy.
Goldie makes a great addition to the family, but one member of the cat trio disagrees and cat-jinks (hijinks for cats) ensue. Will enemies become friends in time for Christmas?
A cute read about neighborhoods cats being suspicious of racoons and solving mysteries. This is basically an anthology of connected comic short stories.
